Prediction of nonlinear optical properties of organic materials. General theoretical considerations

The prediction of nonlinear optical properties of organic materials is geared to assist materials scientists in the selection of good candidate molecules. A brief summary of the quantum mechanical methods used for estimating hyperpolarizabilities will be presented. The advantages and limitations of each technique will be discussed. Particular attention will be given to the finite-field method for calculating first and second order hyperpolarizabilities, since this method is better suited for large molecules. Corrections for dynamic fields and bulk effects will be discussed in detail, focusing on solvent effects, conformational isomerization, core effects, dispersion, and hydrogen bonding. Several results will be compared with data obtained from third-harmonic-generation (THG) and dc-induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) measurements. These comparisons will demonstrate the qualitative ability of the method to predict the relative strengths of hyperpolarizabilities of a class of compounds. The future application of molecular mechanics, as well as other techniques, in the study of bulk properties and solid state defects will be addressed. The relationship between large values for nonlinear optical properties and large conjugation lengths is well known, and is particularly important for third-order processes. For this reason, the materials with the largest observed nonresonant third-order properties are conjugated polymers. An example of this type of polymer is polydiacetylene. One of the problems in dealing with polydiacetylene is that substituents which may enhance its nonlinear properties may ultimately prevent it from polymerizing. A model which attempts to predict the likelihood of solid-state polymerization is considered, along with the implications of the assumptions that are used. Calculations of the third-order optical properties and their relationship to first-order properties and energy gaps will be discussed. The relationship between monomeric and polymeric third-order optical properties will also be considered.

Photodeposition of Thin Polydiacetylene Films from Solution that Exhibit Large Third-Order Optical Nonlinearities

One promising class of organic compounds for applications in the field of nonlinear optics (NLO) are polydiacetylenes, which are of interest because they are highly conjugated polymers capable of exhibiting very large optical nonlinearities with fast response times. During the course of crystal growth studies in anticipation of a space experiment, we discovered a novel, simple method for the formation of polydiacetylene thin films by photodeposition from monomer solutions onto quartz or glass substrates. Characterization of these PDAMNA films is not trivial; they are not soluble in common organic solvents, which makes the standard solution-based methods of polymer analysis useless.

Development of Novel Composite and Random Materials for Nonlinear Optics and Lasers

A qualitative model explaining sharp spectral peaks in emission of solid-state random laser materials with broad-band gain is proposed. The suggested mechanism of coherent emission relies on synchronization of phases in an ensemble of emitting centers, via time delays provided by a network of random scatterers, and amplification of spontaneous emission that supports the spontaneously organized coherent state. Laser-like emission from powders of solid-state luminophosphors, characterized by dramatic narrowing of the emission spectrum and shortening of emission pulses above the threshold, was first observed by Markushev et al. and further studied by a number of research groups. In particular, it has been shown that when the pumping energy significantly exceeds the threshold, one or several narrow emission lines can be observed in broad-band gain media with scatterers, such as films of ZnO nanoparticles, films of pi-conjugated polymers or infiltrated opals. The experimental features, commonly observed in various solid-state random laser materials characterized by different particle sizes, different values of the photon mean free path l*, different indexes of refraction, etc.. can be described as follows. (Liquid dye random lasers are not discussed here.)

Developing Novel Fluorescent Materials with Near Infrared Emission by Using m-Phenylene

Our research focuses on development of novel p-conjugated polymers with desired emission. In the current study, the structure of a highly green-emitting poly[(m-phenylenevinylene)- alt-( p-phenylenevinylene)] has been modified by increasing the content of p-phenylene to achieve red- and infrared-emission. The polymer is synthesized via Wittig-Horner condensation, which is known to lead to trans-olefin linkage. The polymer is soluble in common organic solvents such as toluene, chloroform and THF. The spectroscopic properties of the polymer in both solution and film states will be discussed in comparison with its model compound.

Half‐Fused Diketopyrrolopyrrole‐Based Conjugated Donor–Acceptor Polymer for Ambipolar Field‐Effect Transistors

Abstract A novel building block, denoted as half‐fused diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) (9‐(3‐octadecylhenicosyl)‐8‐(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐7 H ‐pyrrolo[3,4‐ a ]thieno[3,2‐ g ]indolizine‐7,10(9 H )‐dione), in which one of the flanking thiophene units is fused to one of the DPP rings via a carbon‐carbon double bond at the N‐position is reported. The half‐fused DPP is successfully utilized as an electron acceptor to prepare the conjugated donor–acceptor polymer PTFDFT , which exhibits ambipolar semiconducting behavior in ambient air. Theoretical calculations and absorption spectral studies show that the backbone of PTFDFT is more planar compared to the reference polymer with conventional DPP units. As a result, PTFDFT shows a narrow bandgap and low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. The more planar backbone with fewer side chains favors the dense packing of the polymer chains of PTFDFT with a short π–π stacking distance (3.49 Å). Grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering data further confirm the predominant edge‐on packing mode of the PTFDFT polymer chains on the substrate. As expected, the PTFDFT thin film shows excellent ambipolar semiconducting properties under ambient conditions, reaching 2.23 and 1.08 cm 2 V −1 s −1 for the n‐ and p‐channels, respectively. In addition, complementary‐like inverter with gain value as high as 141 is successfully constructed using the PTFDFT thin film.

Bis-polymer lipid-peptide conjugates and nanoparticles thereof

The present invention provides bis-polymer lipid-peptide conjugates containing a hydrophobic block and headgroup containing a helical peptide and two polymer blocks. The conjugates can self-assemble to form helix bundle subunits, which in turn assemble to provide micellar nanocarriers for drug cargos and other agents. Particles containing the conjugates and methods for forming the particles are also disclosed.

Second and third order nonlinear optical properties of conjugated molecules and polymers

Second- and third-order nonlinear optical properties of some newly synthesized organic molecules and polymers are reported. Powder second-harmonic-generation efficiencies of up to 200 times urea have been realized for asymmetric donor-acceptor acetylenes. Third harmonic generation chi(3)s have been determined for a series of small conjugated molecules in solution. THG chi(3)s have also been determined for a series of soluble conjugated copolymers prepared using ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The results are discussed in terms of relevant molecular and/or macroscopic structural features of these conjugated organic materials.

Synthesis and Characterization of SF-PPV-I

Conjugated electro-active polymers find their potential applications in developing variety inexpensive and flexible shaped electronic and photonic devices, such as photovoltaic or photo/electro light emitting devices. In many of these opto-electronic polymeric materials, certain electron rich donors and electron deficient acceptors are needed in order to fine-tune the electronic or photonic properties of the desired materials and structures. While many donor type of conjugated polymers have been widely studied and developed in the past decades, there are relatively fewer acceptor type of conjugated polymers have been developed. Key acceptor type conjugated polymers developed so far include C60 and CN-PPV, and each has its limitations. Due to the complexity and diversity of variety future electronic materials and structural needs, alternative and synthetically amenable acceptor conjugated polymers need to be developed. In this paper, we present the synthesis and characterization of a new acceptor conjugated polymer, a sulfone derivatized polyphenylenevinylene "SF-PPV".

Synthesis and evaluation of polymers for use in early warning fire alarm devices

Conjugated polyacetylene polymers and one condensation polyene, all containing a high degree of conjugated unsaturation, were synthesized. These polymers were characterized by chemical analysis and by thermogravimetric analysis, as well as for their film-forming capability and gas/polymer interactions. It was found that those that had a high degree of conjugated unsaturation and had resonance - stabilizing groups were very thermally stable to 200 C, e.g., poly(dicyanoacetylene), poly(ethynylferrocene) and poly(phenylacetylene); while those with labile moieties, such as poly(p-formamidophenylacetylene), among others, suffered some degradation when heated in air. When subjected to gas/polymer interaction effects, the greatest change in electrical conductance was observed when ammonia was used as the gas and poly(p-nitrophenylacetylene) was the detector. Other polymers showed similar behavior. For example, poly(ethynylcarborane), considered to be an electron acceptor also showed a change in electrical conductance when exposed to ammonia, while poly(ethynylpyridine) and poly(ethylidenepyridazine) responded to carbon monoxide. However, for "fire gases" (gases from smoldering cotton), poly(ethynylferrocene) was the most responsive. Thus, the concept of polymers with different electronegativities forming charge-transfer complexes with different gases was found to be operable.

Process for crosslinking and extending conjugated diene-containing polymers

A process using a Diels-Alder reaction which increases the molecular weight and/or crosslinks polymers by reacting the polymers with bisunsaturated dienophiles is developed. The polymer comprises at least 75% by weight based on the reaction product, has a molecular weight of at least 5000 and a plurality of conjugated 1,3-diene systems incorporated into the molecular structure. A dienophile reaction with the conjugated 1,3-diene of the polymer is at least 1% by weight based on the reaction product. Examples of the polymer include polyesters, polyamides, polyethers, polysulfones and copolymers. The bisunsaturated dienophiles may include bis-maleimides, bis maleic and bis tumaric esters and amides. This method for expanding the molecular weight chains of the polymers, preferable thermoplastics, is advantageous for processing or fabricating thermoplastics. A low molecular weight thermoplastic is converted to a high molecular weight plastic having improved strength and toughness for use in the completed end use article.

Role of Complexation Strength on the Photophysical and Transport Properties of Semiconducting Charged Polymer Complexes

The high polymer fraction in complexes of conjugated and insulating polyelectrolytes offers unique opportunities for the fabrication of conductive thick films and bulk structures. The electrostatic interactions in these systems further provide a handle for controlling their structure and properties. The impact of charge-mediated complexation strength on the photophysical and electronic transport properties in blends of conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with oppositely charged polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) was examined. Complexes were formed with varying frequency of charged repeat units, from 50 to 100%, on an anionic polythiophene-based CPE and a complimentary cationic PIL. In highly charged complexes, the intimate mixing between the CPE and the PIL reduced the structural disorder along the CPE backbone, enhancing its intrachain conjugation and interchain stacking. In weakly charged complexes (<90%), these chain planarization effects were absent and microphase separation occurred. At all charge fractions examined, the electrical conductivity of an acid-doped complex was higher than that of the unblended constituent CPE. Further, the highest electrical conductivity, near 1 S cm –1 , was found for a charge fraction of 100%. These results demonstrate the potential for designing effective polymeric conductors using electrostatic complexation.

Spacecraft dielectric material properties and spacecraft charging

The physics of spacecraft charging is reviewed, and criteria for selecting and testing semiinsulating polymers (SIPs) to avoid charging are discussed and illustrated. Chapters are devoted to the required properties of dielectric materials, the charging process, discharge-pulse phenomena, design for minimum pulse size, design to prevent pulses, conduction in polymers, evaluation of SIPs that might prevent spacecraft charging, and the general response of dielectrics to space radiation. SIPs characterized include polyimides, fluorocarbons, thermoplastic polyesters, poly(alkanes), vinyl polymers and acrylates, polymers containing phthalocyanine, polyacene quinones, coordination polymers containing metal ions, conjugated-backbone polymers, and 'metallic' conducting polymers. Tables summarizing the results of SIP radiation tests (such as those performed for the NASA Galileo Project) are included.

Impact of Cation Insertion on Semiconducting Polymer Thin Films toward Electrochemical Energy Conversion

Semiconducting polymers are being explored for electrochemical and photoelectrochemical energy transformation and storage applications. For these applications, it is critical to understand how ion insertion from the electrolyte into polymer electrodes modulates the polymer electronic structure and electron doping levels. Here, this study explores electrochemical cation insertion in the n-type conjugated redox polymer P90, composed of alternating naphthalene diimide (NDI) acceptor and bithiophene (T2) donor units, where the NDI units are functionalized with heptaethylene glycol (HEG, 90%) and 2-octyl dodecyl (OD, 10%) side chains. By combining in situ techniques (UV-vis absorption and Raman spectroscopies with electrochemistry), structural analysis using ex situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that dications enable negative polaron and bipolaron formation in the P90 at less reducing potentials while supporting more bipolaron formation than the monocations; moreover, larger dications with smaller hydrated radii increase the maximum P90 electron doping level. We also determine that the monocations lead to more thermodynamically stabilized polarons compared with the dications. These findings highlight the critical role of cation identity in tuning electrochemical charging, charge stabilization, and electronic structure of n-type conjugated redox polymers, providing guidance on the rational design of polymer-based (photo)electrochemical applications.

High-temperature 2D ferromagnetism in conjugated microporous porphyrin-type polymers

The need for magnetic 2D materials that are stable to the enviroment and have high Curie temperatures is very important for various electronic and spintronic applications. We have found that two-dimensional porphyrin-type aza-conjugated microporous polymer crystals are such a material (Fe-aza-CMPs). Fe-aza-CMPs are stable to CO, CO 2 , and O 2 atmospheres and show unusual adsorption, electronic, and magnetic properties. Indeed, they are semiconductors with small energy band gaps ranging from 0.27 eV to 0.626 eV. CO, CO 2 , and O 2 molecules can be attached in three different ways where single, double, or triple molecules are bound to iron atoms in Fe-aza-CMPs. For different attachment configurations we find that for CO and CO 2 a uniform distribution of the molecules is most energetically favorable while for O 2 molecules aggregation is most energetically preferable. The magnetic moments decrease from 4 to 2 to 0 for singly, doubly, triply occupied configurations for all gasses respectively. The most interesting magnetic properties are found for O 2 molecules attached to the Fe-aza-CMP. For a single attachment configuration we find that an antiferromagnetic state is favorable. When two O 2 molecules are attached, the calculations show the highest exchange integral with a value of J = 1071 μeV. This value has been verified by two independent methods where in the first method J is calculated by the energy difference between ferromagnetic and anitferromagnetic configurations. The second method is based on the frozen magnon approach where the magnon dispersion curve has been fitted by the Ising model. Finally, for the second method J has been estimated at J = 1100 μeV in excellent agreement with the first method.
