Cooperative response of magnetism and superconductivity in the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe 4 As 4

Herein, we present a study of the magnetic-flux evolution in the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe 4 As 4 performed using magneto-optical imaging and magnetization measurements during field cooling and warming and magnetic field cycling at temperatures above and below the magnetic transition point, T$_m$. The vortex patterns emerging at T ≲ T$_m$ reveal that the Eu-spin subsystem serves as an internal pump of the magnetic flux while the superconducting critical current controls the delivery of magnetic-flux quanta into the bulk. The interplay of magnetic susceptibility amplifying the magnetic induction and vortex pinning attenuating the magnetic-flux entry results in a field- and temperature-dependent critical state that emulates a paramagnetic Meissner effect. The observed vortex dynamics corresponds to a nontrivial spatial current distribution and yields a self-consistent inhomogeneous enhancement of the sample magnetization.

Temperature-driven BCS-BEC crossover and Cooper-paired metallic phase in coupled boson-fermion systems

Motivated by strongly correlated and frustrated systems, in this work we propose an effective model that describes the dynamics of pairs of opposite spin fermions scattering from localized bosons. Integrating out one of the degrees, either the bosons or fermions, generates temperature-dependent long-range effective interactions between the entities that we investigate using Monte Carlo techniques. The behavior of bosons is dominated by vortex-antivortex unbinding, with effective interboson interactions beyond the nearest-neighbor Josephson coupling of phases. Remarkably, in the fermion sector we observe a temperature-driven phase transition from a SC phase with a “BCS” spectral function that shows a gap minimum on the underlying Fermi surface to a conducting phase of pairs but with a “BEC” spectral function with a gap minimum at k = 0. Tunneling and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Bose-Fermi mixtures in cold atomic systems and superconducting islands on graphene are some of the promising experimental platforms to test our predictions.

Cooperative mechanisms behind nanoscale smoothing on metal surfaces: From adatom diffusion to step nucleation

Many technologies require stable or metastable surface morphology. Here, in this paper we study the factors that control the metastability of a common feature of rough surfaces: “hillocks.” We use low energy electron microscopy to follow the evolution of the individual atomic steps in hillocks on Pd(111). We show that the uppermost island in the stack often adopts a static, metastable configuration. Modeling this result shows that the degree of the metastability depends on the configuration of steps dozens of atomic layers lower. Our model allows us to link surface metastability to the atomic processes of surface evolution.

Surface Cooper-Pair Spin Waves in Triplet Superconductors

Here, we study the electrodynamics of spin triplet superconductors including dipolar interactions, which give rise to an interplay between the collective spin dynamics of the condensate and orbital Meissner screening currents. Within this theory, we identify a class of spin waves that originate from the coupled dynamics of the spin-symmetry breaking triplet order parameter and the electromagnetic field. In particular, we study magnetostatic spin wave modes that are localized to the sample surface. We show that these surface modes can be excited and detected using experimental techniques such as microwave spin wave resonance spectroscopy or nitrogen-vacancy magnetometry, and propose that the detection of these modes offers a means for the identification of spin triplet superconductivity.

Quest for Cooper Pair Transfer in Heavy-Ion Reactions: The 206 Pb + 118 Sn Case

In this Letter we report on effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations probed in nucleon transfer reactions with heavy ions. We measured with high efficiency and resolution a complete set of observables for neutron transfer channels in the ²⁰⁶Pb + ¹¹⁸Sn system employing a large solid angle magnetic spectrometer, which allowed us to study a wide range of internuclear distances via a detailed excitation function. The coupled channel theory, based on an independent particle transfer mechanism, follows the experimental transfer probabilities for one- and two-neutron pick-up and stripping channels. The experimental two-neutron transfer cross sections indicate that in reactions between pair-vibrational (closed shell) and pair-rotational (open shell) nuclei, correlations manifest via pair-addition and pair-removal modes, which constitute one of the elementary modes of excitations in nuclei.

Stochastic Gradient-Based Distributed Bayesian Estimation in Cooperative Sensor Networks

Distributed Bayesian inference provides a full quantification of uncertainty offering numerous advantages over point estimates that autonomous sensor networks are able to exploit. However, fully-decentralized Bayesian inference often requires large communication overheads and low network latency, resources that are not typically available in practical applications. In this paper, we propose a decentralized Bayesian inference approach based on stochastic gradient Langevin dynamics, which produces full posterior distributions at each of the nodes with significantly lower communication overhead. We provide analytical results on convergence of the proposed distributed algorithm to the centralized posterior, under typical network constraints. Finally, we also provide extensive simulation results to demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.
