Evidence for B + → K + ν ν ¯ decays

We search for the rare decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ in a 362 fb − 1 sample of electron-positron collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying B meson in ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal B candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying B meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the B + → K + ν ν ¯ branching fraction of [ 2.7 ± 0.5 ( stat ) ± 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 and [ 1.1 − 0.8 + 0.9 ( stat ) − 0.5 + 0.8 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay B + → K + ν ν ¯ to be [ 2.3 ± 0.5 ( stat ) − 0.4 + 0.5 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 5 , providing the first evidence for this decay at 3.5 standard deviations. The combined result is 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for a μ + μ − resonance in four-muon final states at Belle II

We report on a search for a resonance X decaying to a pair of muons in e + e − → μ + μ − X events in the 0.212 – 9.000 GeV / c 2 mass range, using 178 fb − 1 of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models of X beyond the standard model: a Z ′ vector boson in the L μ − L τ model and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90% confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below 6 GeV / c 2 , the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for the L μ − L τ model and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurement of C P asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays at Belle II

We report a measurement of decay-time-dependent charge-parity ( C P ) asymmetries in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays. We use 387 × 10 6 B B ¯ pairs collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. We reconstruct 220 signal events and extract the C P -violating parameters S and C from a fit to the distribution of the decay-time difference between the two B mesons. The resulting confidence region is consistent with previous measurements in B 0 → K S 0 K S 0 K S 0 and B 0 → ( c c ¯ ) K 0 decays and with predictions based on the standard model. Measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B − → D 0 ρ ( 770 ) − at Belle II

We measure the branching fraction of the decay B − → D 0 ρ ( 770 ) − using data collected with the Belle II detector. The data contain 387 million B B ¯ pairs produced in e + e − collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance. We reconstruct 8360 ± 180 decays from an analysis of the distributions of the B − energy and the ρ ( 770 ) − helicity angle. We determine the branching fraction to be ( 0.939 ± 0.021 ( stat ) ± 0.050 ( syst ) ) % , in agreement with previous results. Our measurement improves the relative precision of the world average by more than a factor of two. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

New graph-neural-network flavor tagger for Belle II and measurement of sin 2⁢𝜙 1 in 𝐵 0 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays

We present GFlaT, a new algorithm that uses a graph-neural-network to determine the flavor of neutral 𝐵 mesons produced in ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) decays. It improves previous algorithms by using the information from all charged final-state particles and the relations between them. We evaluate its performance using 𝐵 decays to flavor-specific hadronic final states reconstructed in a 362 fb −1 sample of electron-positron collisions collected at the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We achieve an effective tagging efficiency of (37.40 ± 0.43 ± 0.36%), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, which is 18% better than the previous Belle II algorithm. Demonstrating the algorithm, we use 𝐵 0 →𝐽/𝜓⁢𝐾$^0_ S$ decays to measure the mixing-induced and direct 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation parameters, 𝑆 = (0.724 ± 0.035 ± 0.009) and 𝐶 = (−0.035 ± 0.026 ± 0.029).

Test of lepton flavor universality with a measurement of R ( D * ) using hadronic B tagging at the Belle II experiment

The ratio of branching fractions R ( D * ) = B ( B ¯ → D * τ − ν ¯ τ ) / B ( B ¯ → D * ℓ − ν ¯ ℓ ) , where ℓ is an electron or muon, is measured using a Belle II data sample with an integrated luminosity of 189 fb − 1 at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider. Data is collected at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance, and one B meson in the ϒ ( 4 S ) → B B ¯ decay is fully reconstructed in hadronic decay modes. The accompanying signal B meson is reconstructed as B ¯ → D * τ − ν ¯ τ using leptonic τ decays. The normalization decay, B ¯ → D * ℓ − ν ¯ ℓ , produces the same observable final-state particles. The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields R ( D * ) = 0.262 − 0.039 + 0.041 ( stat ) − 0.032 + 0.035 ( syst ) . This result is consistent with the current world average and with Standard Model predictions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the baryon number and lepton number violating decays τ − → Λ π − and τ − → Λ ¯ π − at Belle II

We present a search for the baryon number B and lepton number L violating decays τ − → Λ π − and τ − → Λ ¯ π − produced from the e + e − → τ + τ − process, using a 364 fb − 1 data sample collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. No evidence of signal is found in either decay mode, which have | Δ ( B − L ) | equal to 2 and 0, respectively. Upper limits at 90% credibility level on the branching fractions of τ − → Λ π − and τ − → Λ ¯ π − are determined to be 4.7 × 10 − 8 and 4.3 × 10 − 8 , respectively. Measurement of the e + e − → π + π − π 0 cross section in the energy range 0.62–3.50 GeV at Belle II

We report a measurement of the e + e − → π + π − π 0 cross section in the energy range from 0.62 to 3.50 GeV using an initial-state radiation technique. We use an e + e − data sample corresponding to 191 fb − 1 of integrated luminosity, collected at a center-of-mass energy at or near the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. Signal yields are extracted by fitting the two-photon mass distribution in e + e − → π + π − π 0 γ events, which involve a π 0 → γ γ decay and an energetic photon radiated from the initial state. Signal efficiency corrections with an accuracy of 1.6% are obtained from several control data samples. The uncertainty on the cross section at the ω and ϕ resonances is dominated by the systematic uncertainty of 2.2%. The resulting cross sections in the 0.62–1.80 GeV energy range yield a μ 3 π = [ 48.91 ± 0.23 ( stat ) ± 1.07 ( syst ) ] × 10 − 10 for the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This result differs by 2.5 standard deviations from the most precise current determination. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of time-dependent C P violation and measurement of the branching fraction of B 0 → J / ψ π 0 decays

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ( C P ) decay-rate asymmetries in B 0 → J / ψ π 0 decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric e + e − collider in 2019–2022 and contains ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 B B ¯ meson pairs from ϒ ( 4 S ) decays. We reconstruct 392 ± 24 signal decays and fit the C P parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two B mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be ( B 0 → J / ψ π 0 ) = ( 2.00 ± 0.12 ± 0.09 ) × 10 − 5 and the direct and mixing-induced C P asymmetries to be C C P = 0.13 ± 0.12 ± 0.03 and S C P = − 0.88 ± 0.17 ± 0.03 , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced C P violation with a significance of 5.0 standard deviations for the first time in this mode. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Measurement of the time-integrated C P asymmetry in D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 decays using Belle and Belle II data

We measure the time-integrated C P asymmetry in D 0 → K S 0 K S 0 decays reconstructed in e + e − → c c ¯ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 and 428 fb − 1 , respectively. The D 0 decays are required to originate from the D * + → D 0 π + decay, which determines the charm flavor at production time. A control sample of D 0 → K + K − decays is used to correct for production and detection asymmetries. The result, ( − 1.4 ± 1.3 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) ) % , is consistent with previous determinations and with C P symmetry. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Measurement of the branching fraction, polarization, and time-dependent C P asymmetry in B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays and constraint on the CKM angle ϕ 2

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization of B 0 → ρ + ρ − decays, which have two π 0 ’s in the final state. We also measure time-dependent C P violation parameters for decays into longitudinally polarized ρ + ρ − pairs. This analysis is based on a data sample containing ( 387 ± 6 ) × 10 6 ϒ ( 4 S ) mesons collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider in 2019–2022. We obtain B ( B 0 → ρ + ρ − ) = ( 2.8 9 − 0.22 + 0.23 − 0.27 + 0.29 ) × 10 − 5 , f L = 0.92 1 − 0.025 + 0.024 − 0.015 + 0.017 , S = − 0.26 ± 0.19 ± 0.08 , and C = − 0.02 ± 0.1 2 − 0.05 + 0.06 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We use these results to perform an isospin analysis to constrain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle ϕ 2 and obtain two solutions; the result consistent with other Standard Model constraints is ϕ 2 = ( 92.6 − 4.7 + 4.5 ) ° . Ionization waves in low-current dc discharges in noble gases obtained with a hybrid kinetic-fluid model

A hybrid kinetic-fluid model is used to study ionization waves (striations) in a low-current plasma column of dc discharges in noble gases. Coupled solutions of a kinetic equation for electrons, a drift-diffusion equation for ions, and a Poisson equation for the electric field are obtained to clarify the nature of plasma stratification in the positive column. A simplified two-level excitation-ionization model is used for the conditions when the nonlinear effects due to stepwise ionization, gas heating, and Coulomb interactions among electrons are negligible. It is confirmed that the nonlocal effects are responsible for the formation of moving striations in dc discharges at low plasma densities and low values of pR (the product of gas pressure and tube radius). Here, the calculated properties of self-excited waves of S–, P–, and R types in neon and S type in argon agree with available experimental data. The reason for helium plasma stability to stratification is clarified. It is shown that sustaining stratified plasma is more efficient than striation-free plasma when the ionization rate is a nonlinear function of the electric field. However, the nonlinear dependence of the ionization rate on the electric field is not required for plasma stratification. Striations of S–, P–, and R types in neon exist with minimal or no ionization enhancement. Effects of the column length and plasma density on the wave properties are demonstrated.
