New Structures in the J / ψ J / ψ Mass Spectrum in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search is reported for near-threshold structures in the J / ψ J / ψ invariant mass spectrum produced in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV from data collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 135 fb − 1 . Three structures are found, and a model with quantum interference among these structures provides a good description of the data. A new structure is observed with a local significance above 5 standard deviations at a mass of 6638 − 38 + 43 ( stat ) − 31 + 16 ( syst ) MeV . Another structure with even higher significance is found at a mass of 6847 − 28 + 44 ( stat ) − 20 + 48 ( syst ) MeV , which is consistent with the X ( 6900 ) resonance reported by the LHCb experiment and confirmed by the ATLAS experiment. Evidence for another new structure, with a local significance of 4.7 standard deviations, is found at a mass of 7134 − 25 + 48 ( stat ) − 15 + 41 ( syst ) MeV . Results are also reported for a model without interference, which does not fit the data as well and shows mass shifts up to 150 MeV relative to the model with interference. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

The JLab Eta Factory (JEF) experiment

The new experiment, JLab Eta Factory (JEF), in the experimental Hall D at Jefferson Lab will extend the physics potential of the GlueX detector beyond the main spectroscopy program and perform precision measurements of various ?(?)decays with emphasis on rare neutral modes. The physics program of the experiment spans from precision tests of low-energy QCD to search of gauge bosons in the mass range below 1 GeV coupling the SM sector to the dark sector. Photoproduction of highly boosted ?(?)mesons using a tagged photon beam, good detection of recoil proton and multi-photon final states will allow to suppress background and collect high-statistics data sample of ?mesons. All these provide many advantages over other ?(?)experiments. The JEF experiment requires to upgrade the inner part of the forward lead glass calorimeter of the GlueX detector with high-granularity, high-resolution lead tungstate PbWO4 scintillating crystals. The calorimeter insert is currently under construction at Jeffeson Lab. The detector will be ready to take data in 2024. An overview of the JEF project will be presented.

Confinement and String Breaking in the Compact Abelian Higgs Model

While real-time simulation of Quantum Chromodynamics remains technologically out of reach, simplified models for studying elements of QCD phenomenology abound. This work presents a simple model, a spin-1 truncation of the Compact Abelian Higgs Model simulated on qutrit sites, in which confinement and string breaking is accessible to current simulation methods. In the low-energy regime of 1+1D scalar electrodynamics, the heavy modes are integrated out, producing a spin chain effective Hamiltonian in which Gauss' law is implicitly satisfied. We study the spectrum of string-like excitations using DMRG methods on the order of 100 sites. We demonstrate that an added, local chemical potential, playing a role analogous to external charges, permits parameter-dependent measurements of physical features of interest like the string tension and effective meson mass. Varying the chemical potential also permits a characterization of string stability not assessed in prior studies of confining lattice models.

Measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) mesons in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV

The second-order Fourier coefficients ( v 2 ) characterizing the azimuthal distributions of Υ(1S) and Υ(2S) mesons produced in PbPb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV are studied. The Υ mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb - 1 . The scalar product method is used to extract the v 2 coefficients of the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range | y | < 2.4 , in the transverse momentum interval 0 < p T < 50 GeV / c , and in three centrality ranges of 10–30%, 30–50% and 50–90%. In contrast to the J / ψ mesons, the measured v 2 values for the Image 5 mesons are found to be consistent with zero.

Probing the Deuteron at Very Large Internal Momenta

We measure H-2(e, e' p)n cross sections at 4-momentum transfers of Q(2) = 4.5 +/- 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) over a range of neutron recoil momenta p(r), reaching up to similar to 1.0 GeV/c. We obtain data at fixed neutron recoil angles theta(nq) = 35 degrees, 45 degrees, and 75 degrees with respect to the 3-momentum transfer (q)over-right-arrow. The new data agree well with previous data, which reached p(r) similar to 500 MeV/c. At theta(nq) = 35 degrees and 45 degrees, final state interactions, meson exchange currents, and isobar currents are suppressed and the plane wave impulse approximation provides the dominant cross section contribution. We compare the new data to recent theoretical calculations, where we observe a significant discrepancy for recoil momenta P-r > 700 MeV/c.

Inclusion of $K\Lambda $ electroproduction data in a coupled channel analysis

Exclusive electroproduction reactions provide an access to the structure of excited baryons. To extract electroproduction multipoles encoding this information, the Julich-Bonn-Washington (JBW) analysis framework is extended to the analysis of differential cross sections in KΛ electroproduction. Here this update enlarges the scope of previous coupled-channel analyses of pions and eta mesons, with photoproduction reactions as boundary condition in all analyzed electroproduction reactions. Polarization observables are predicted and compared to recent CLAS data. The comparison shows the relevance of these data to pin down baryon properties.

Anomalous interactions between mesons with nonzero spin and glueballs

Topologically nontrivial fluctuations control the anomalous interactions for the η and η ′ pseudoscalar mesons. We consider the anomalous interactions for mesons with higher spin, the heterochiral nonets with J P C = 1 + − and 2 − + . Under the approximation of a dilute gas of instantons, the mixing angle between nonstrange and strange mesons decreases strongly as J increases, and oscillates in sign. Anomalous interactions also open up new, rare decay channels. For glueballs, anomalous interactions indicate that the X ( 2600 ) state is primarily gluonic. Spectroscopic study of a possible $Λnn$ resonance and a pair of $ΣNN$ states using the $(e,e'K^+)$ reaction with a tritium target

Here, a mass spectroscopy experiment with a pair of nearly identical high resolution spectrometers and a tritium target was performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Utilizing the (e,e'K + ) reaction, enhancements, which may correspond to a possible $\Lambda$nn resonance and a pair of ΣNN states, were observed with an energy resolution of about 1.21 MeV (σ), although greater statistics are needed to make definitive identifications. An experimentally measured Λnn state may provide a unique constraint in determining the Λn interaction, for which no scattering data exist. In addition, although bound A = 3 and 4 Σ hypernuclei have been predicted, only an A = 4 Σ hypernucleus ($^4_Σ$He) was found, utilizing the (K - ,π - ) reaction on a 4 He target. The possible bound ΣNN state is likely a Σ 0 nn state, although this has to be confirmed by future experiments.

Search for a Singly Strange Hexaquark Using Polarization Data From CLAS12 at Jefferson Lab Virginia

Recently hadron spectroscopy has seen a lot of success. There has been a large number of baryon and meson resonances discovered over the last two decades. There have also been several tetra and pentaquark candidates with experimental evidence but not confirmed. The first serious candidate was the X(3872), a potential tetraquark, leading to this rise in success for exotic hadron physics. This has brought about improvements in Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD), our current best description of interactions between quarks and gluons. QCD predicts the existence of hexaquark states, and then the d*(2380) was discovered. This thesis explores the rest of the d* Jp =3+ anti-decuplet by searching for experimental evidence of the ds hexaquark. This is the first analysis of the e'd ¿e'K+d0 s ¿e'K+¿n channel using the Py' measurements of the ¿ as a lens to perform this search. This observable was extracted from ¿ electroproduction events off a liquid deuterium target. From this an upper limit of the Breit-Wigner peak strength was extracted. This was done with the use of the CLAS12 detector system housed at Thomas Jefferson Laboratory in Virginia, USA. These polarization measurements are the first to be made on this data, and this is the first time the ds has been searched for in such a way.

Pion gravitational form factors in the QCD instanton vacuum. II

We revisit the hard QCD contributions to the pion gravitational form factors, in terms of the twist-2,3 pion distribution amplitudes (DAs), including novel semihard contributions from the instantons. The pion DAs are evaluated in the QCD instanton vacuum and then properly evolved to higher resolution. The results are compared to our recent results from the QCD instanton vacuum, as well as Bethe-Salpeter calculations and recent lattice data. The interpolated hard and soft contributions to the pion D form factor are used to derive the (gravitational) pressure and shear within the pion, with a clear delineation of their range.

Time extended production of neutrons during a solar flare

The most energetic neutral emissions expected from solar flares are gamma rays (10 MeV) from relativistic primary and secondary electron bremsstrahlung, from approx 0 meson decay, and from neutrons ( 50 MeV). Bremsstrahlung photon energies extend to that of the highest energy electron present, but the shape of the pi sup 0 gamma ray spectrum, peaking at 69 MeV, does not depend strongly on the proton spectrum above threshold, which is approx. 292 MeV for meson production on protons. The highest energy neutrons observed indicate directly the highest energy ions which interact at the Sun, and the presence or absence of anergy cutoff in the acceleration process. The high-energy proton spectrum shape can be determined from the neutron spectrum.

Nuclear collective flow and charged-pion emission in Ne-nucleus collisions at E/A = 800 MeV

Triple-differential cross sections of charged pions were measured for collisions of Ne projectiles at E/A = 800 MeV with NaF, Nb, and Pb targets. The reaction plane was estimated event by event from the light-baryon momentum distribution. For heavy targets, preferential emission of charged pions away from the interaction zone towards the projectile side was observed in the transverse direction. Such a preferential emission, which is not predicted by cascade calculations, may be attributed to a stronger pion absorption by the heavier spectator remnant.

Improved measurement of the decays η ′ → π + π − π + ( 0 ) π − ( 0 ) and search for the rare decay η ′ → 4 π 0

Using a sample of 10 billion J / ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays η ′ → π + π − π + π − , η ′ → π + π − π 0 π 0 and η ′ → 4 π 0 are studied via the process J / ψ → γ η ′ . The branching fractions of η ′ → π + π − π + π − and η ′ → π + π − π 0 π 0 are measured to be ( 8.56 ± 0.25 ( stat ) ± 0.23 ( syst ) ) × 10 − 5 and ( 2.12 ± 0.12 ( stat ) ± 0.10 ( syst ) ) × 10 − 4 , respectively, which are consistent with previous measurements but with improved precision. No significant η ′ → 4 π 0 signal is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction of this decay is determined to be less than 1.24 × 10 − 5 at the 90% confidence level. In addition, an amplitude analysis of η ′ → π + π − π + π − is performed to extract the doubly virtual isovector form factor α for the first time. The measured value of α = 1.22 ± 0.33 ( stat ) ± 0.04 ( syst ) , is in agreement with the prediction of the vector meson dominance model. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Low-mass vector-meson production at forward rapidity in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured low-mass vector-meson (𝜔+𝜌 and 𝜙) production through the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (1.2 < |y| < 2.2) in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV. The low-mass vector-meson yield and nuclear-modification factor were measured as a function of the average number of participating nucleons, ⟨𝑁 part ⟩, and the transverse momentum 𝑝 𝑇 . These results were compared with those obtained via the kaon decay channel in a similar 𝑝 𝑇 range at midrapidity. The nuclear-modification factors in both rapidity regions are consistent within the uncertainties. A comparison of the 𝜔 + 𝜌 and 𝐽/𝜓 mesons reveals that the light and heavy flavors are consistently suppressed across both 𝑝 𝑇 and ⟨𝑁 part ⟩. Finally, in contrast, the 𝜙 meson displays a nuclear-modification factor consistent with unity, suggesting strangeness enhancement in the medium formed.

Search for new physics in the τ lepton plus missing transverse momentum final state in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) in the final state with a hadronically decaying tau lepton and a neutrino is presented. This analysis is based on data recorded by the CMS experiment from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{–1}$. The transverse mass spectrum is analyzed for the presence of new physics. No significant deviation from the SM prediction is observed. Limits are set on the production cross section of a W' boson decaying into a tau lepton and a neutrino. Lower limits are set on the mass of the sequential SM-like heavy charged vector boson and the mass of a quantum black hole. Upper limits are placed on the couplings of a new boson to the SM fermions. Constraints are put on a nonuniversal gauge interaction model and an effective field theory model. For the first time, upper limits on the cross section of t-channel leptoquark (LQ) exchange are presented. These limits are translated into exclusion limits on the LQ mass and on its coupling in the t-channel. The sensitivity of this analysis extends into the parameter space of LQ models that attempt to explain the anomalies observed in B meson decays. The limits presented for the various interpretations are the most stringent to date. Additionally, a model-independent limit is provided.
