Distortion of the Microwave Blackbody Background Radiation Implied by the Baryon-symmetric Cosmology of Omnes and the Galaxy Formation Theory of Stecker and Puget

Theories on the evolution of the universe are evaluated. Particular attention was given to Omnes and Stecker and Puget theories. Data cover distortion of the microwave black body background energy distribution at red shifts between 10,000 and 1.000, and black body distortion due to antimatter and annihilation reactions.

Thermal distortion analysis of a deployable parabolic reflector

A thermal distortion analysis of the ATS-6 Satellite parabolic reflector was performed using NASTRAN level 15.1. The same NASTRAN finite element method was used to conduct a one g static load analysis and a dynamic analysis of the reflector. In addition, a parametric study was made to determine which parameters had the greatest effect on the thermal distortions. The method used to model the construction of the reflector is described and the results of the analyses are presented.

Combined Quadrupole-dipole Model for Inlet Flow Distortion Noise from a Subsonic Fan

A combined quadrupole-dipole model has been developed for the noise generated by inlet flow distortion in a subsonic fan. A formula is derived for the total upstream-radiated acoustic power in each tone as a function of the design parameters of the fan and the properties of the inlet flow distortion. Numerical results are obtained for values of the parameters corresponding to various quiet fans. The analysis is compared with noise measurements taken on a 51-cm (20-in.) diameter research fan as well as with those taken on a number of full-scale fan stages. Fairly good agreement was obtained. It should therefore be possible to use this model to study the noise-reduction potential of the various fan design parameters.

Low distortion automatic phase control circuit

A voltage controlled phase shifter is rendered substantially harmonic distortion free over a large dynamic input range by employing two oppositely poled, equally biased varactor diodes as the voltage controlled elements which adjust the phase shift. Control voltages which affect the bias of both diodes equally are used to adjust the phase shift without increasing distortion. A feedback stabilized phase shifter is rendered substantially frequency independent by employing a phase detector to control the phase shift of the voltage controlled phase shifter.

Some comparisons of the flow characteristics of a turbofan compressor system with and without inlet pressure distortion

The measured effects of a circumferential distortion in inlet total pressure on the fan, low, and high compressor of an afterburning turbofan engine are presented and discussed. Extensive inner-stage instrumentation, combined with a unique test technique offered an accurate means of measuring the shifts in flow, performance, and stall mechanisms within the compressor. These effects are compared at one speed to the corresponding effects measured with undistorted inlet flow. The results show the rate at which the distorted flow areas were attenuated and rotated as well as the change in flow velocities that occurred at various points in the compressor. High response pressure traces indicated the location of stalls including the sequence of dynamic events from the onset and propagation of various stall-recovery events, to compressor surge, to the resulting hammershock.

Isolated rotor noise due to inlet distortion or turbulence

Theoretical formulation, analysis, and results are presented that are necessary to analyze quadrupole noise generated from a loaded, subsonic rotor because of its interaction with an inflow distortion or inlet turbulence. The ratio of quadrupole to dipole noise is largely a function of the axial Mach number, wheel tip Mach number, rotor solidity, and total pressure ratio across the rotor. It is relatively independent of the specific form of the inflow distortion or inlet turbulence. Comparisons with experimental data only succeed in predicting gross levels at a given speed and fail to predict the variation of noise at fixed speed with flow and pressure ratio. Likely sources of this discrepancy are discussed.

Geometric distortions of opticommercial panoramic television systems

One of the problems solvable by the spaceborne television system, topographical surveying, makes high demands on image quality, particularly on the geometric distortions introduced by the television camera. It is the geometric distortions which determine measurement accuracy and, consequently, the possibility of creating reliable planetary surface maps. Comparative analysis of the different television systems capable of solving the problem showed that the requirements on quality of the transmitted images are best satisfied by television cameras with opticomechanical scanning. The design of panoramic television systems and the process of image construction by the opticomechanical camera are discussed. Results indicate that panoramic television cameras have the necessary instrumental accuracy and permit determination of the direction to objects with an error practically equal to the resolution.

Prediction of compressor stall for distorted and undistorted flow by use of a multistage compressor simulation on the digital computer

A simulation technique is presented for the prediction of compressor stall for axial-flow compressors for clean and distorted inlet flow. The simulation is implemented on the digital computer and uses stage stacking and lumped-volume gas dynamics. The resulting nonlinear differential equations are linearized about a steady-state operating point, and a Routh-Hurwitz stability test is performed on the linear system matrix. Parallel compressor theory is utilized to extend the technique to the distorted inlet flow problem. The method is applied to the eight-stage J85-13 compressor.

On the distortion of the Jovian magnetic field R greater than about 40 Jovian radii as deduced from charged particle studies

The relationship between the rotation of Jupiter's magnetic field and time variations in the intensity of nearly 6 to 30 MeV electrons observed by Pioneer 10 in the outer regions of Jupiter's magnetosphere is considered. The 6-30 MeV electron flux showed regular intensity variations with a period of approximately 10 hours. The behavior of this energetic electron flux is found to be most consistent with confinement of particles to a magnetic equatorial plane which is considerably distorted from the shape expected for rigid corotation of the magnetic field with Jupiter. The distortion is likely to arise from stresses resulting from interaction of the magnetosphere with the solar wind and from inertial effects of the magnetospheric plasma.

Optimum quantisers for a Gaussian input probability density and for the magnitude-error distortion measure

The parameters of non-uniform and uniform quantizers up to ten bits of quantization, optimum for a Gaussian input probability and for the magnitude-error distortion criterion are computed. Optimum quantizers must be understood as quantizers with minimum distortion. The numerical method used for the optimization converges relatively rapidly. The comparison between optimum non-uniform quantizers and optimum uniform quantizers is made.

A method to account for variation of average compressor inlet pressure during instantaneous distortion analyses

Instantaneous distortion analyses compare a time-varying value of an index (or 'surge margin used up') with a critical level (or 'available surge margin' of the compressor) to determine inlet-engine compatibility. Unless freestream conditions or propulsion system controls are changing, it is generally assumed that the available surge margin of the compressor is accurately determined from the steady-state operating point. Results are presented which show that variations of average compressor inlet pressure may occur without changes in freestream conditions or propulsion system controls. The volume dynamics of the compressor will cause these pressure variations to be attenuated and delayed by the time they reach the exit. This will cause the compressor pressure ratio (and available surge margin) to vary with time. A method is presented to calculate the available surge margin as a function of time and incorporate it into an instantaneous distortion analysis. Results show that inlet pressure variations which cause only a small change at the compressor exit can cause a significant variation in the available surge margin.

The effect of vertical distortion in the modeling of sedimentation phenomena - Martian crater wake streaks

Theoretical mass flow rate and the particle trajectory equations of motion of granular material in saltation are used to correlate experimental data for the rate of erosion in the wake regions of wind-tunnel-model Martian craters. Vertical geometric distortion is inherent in the simulation because of the equivalent roughness height characteristic of a turbulent boundary layer, which is affected by material in saltation. It is thus necessary to distort topographic model geometry in the vertical direction. A systematic similitude which is based on erosion rate and equivalent roughness in saltation is shown to correlate time-dependent model data as long as the model Reynolds number is higher than a critical value.

Analysis of pressure distortion testing

The development of a distortion methodology, method D, was documented, and its application to steady state and unsteady data was demonstrated. Three methodologies based upon DIDENT, a NASA-LeRC distortion methodology based upon the parallel compressor model, were investigated by applying them to a set of steady state data. The best formulation was then applied to an independent data set. The good correlation achieved with this data set showed that method E, one of the above methodologies, is a viable concept. Unsteady data were analyzed by using the method E methodology. This analysis pointed out that the method E sensitivities are functions of pressure defect level as well as corrected speed and pattern.

Analysis of dynamic inlet distortion applied to a parallel compressor model

An investigation of surge was conducted by using a parallel compressor model of the J85-13 compressor implement on an analog computer. Surges were initiated by various types of dynamic disturbances in inlet pressure. The compressor model was less sensitive to disturbances of short duration, high frequency, and long duration where the compressor discharge pressure could react. Adding steady distortion to dynamic disturbances reduced the amount of dynamic disturbance required to effect surge. Steady and unsteady distortions combined linearly to reduce surge margin.

Elastic distortion of flanged inner ring of high-speed cylindrical roller bearing

The elastic distortion of the inner ring of an experimental roller bearing is investigated analytically. The geometry of the experimental bearing is unusually complex, and for this reason a bearing with an axially symmetric inner ring is also analyzed. Only the inner ring and shaft are considered using a two dimensional finite element program that can accommodate interference between these components. The results suggest that the elastic distortions are modest in relation to the design clearances associated with the experimental bearing. The variation of the radial deflection of the raceway may, however, be significant in some circumstances.
