Convex Q-Learning in Continuous Time with Application to Dispatch of Distributed Energy Resources

Convex Q-learning is a recent approach to reinforcement learning, motivated by the possibility of a firmer theory for convergence, and the possibility of making use of greater a priori knowledge regarding policy or value function structure. This paper explores algorithm design in the continuous time domain, with a finite-horizon optimal control objective. The main contributions are (i) The new Q-ODE: a model-free characterization of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. (ii) A formulation of Convex Q-learning that avoids approximations appearing in prior work. The Bellman error used in the algorithm is defined by filtered measurements, which is necessary in the presence of measurement noise. (iii) Convex Q-learning with linear function approximation is a convex program. It is shown that the constraint region is bounded, subject to an exploration condition on the training input. (iv) The theory is illustrated in application to resource allocation for distributed energy resources, for which the theory is ideally suited.

Branching Dueling Q-Network Based Online Scheduling of a Microgrid With Distributed Energy Storage Systems

This letter investigates a Branching Dueling Q-Network (BDQ) based online operation strategy for a microgrid with distributed battery energy storage systems (BESSs) operating under uncertainties. Additionally, the developed deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based microgrid online optimization strategy can achieve a linear increase in the number of neural network outputs with the number of distributed BESSs, which overcomes the curse of dimensionality caused by the charge and discharge decisions of multiple BESSs. Numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Ensemble Simulations and Experimental Free Energy Distributions: Evaluation and Characterization of Isoxazole Amides as SMYD3 Inhibitors

Optimization of binding affinities for ligands to their target protein is a primary objective in rational drug discovery. Herein, we report on a collaborative study that evaluates various compounds designed to bind to the SET and MYND domain-containing protein 3 (SMYD3). SMYD3 is a histone methyltransferase and plays an important role in transcriptional regulation in cell proliferation, cell cycle, and human carcinogenesis. Experimental measurements using the scintillation proximity assay show that the distributions of binding free energies from a large number of independent measurements exhibit non-normal properties. We use ESMACS (enhanced sampling of molecular dynamics with approximation of continuum solvent) and TIES (thermodynamic integration with enhanced sampling) protocols to predict the binding free energies and to provide a detailed chemical insight into the nature of ligand-protein binding. Our results show that the 1-trajectory ESMACS protocol works well for the set of ligands studied here. Although one unexplained outlier exists, we obtain excellent statistical ranking across the set of compounds from the ESMACS protocol and good agreement between calculations and experiments for the relative binding free energies from the TIES protocol. ESMACS and TIES are again found to be powerful protocols for the accurate comparison of the binding free energies.

Thermal Energy Distribution System (TEDS) Operating Modes and Control Strategies

A Thermal Energy Delivery System was constructed at the Idaho National Laboratory for demonstrating distribution of thermal energy to and from co-located systems sited in the INL Dynamic Energy Transport and Integration Laboratory (DETAIL). DETAIL includes a flow loop simulating a pressurized water reactor, a high-temperature steam electrolysis unit and a thermal energy storage system. This report discusses the various operating modes and control strategies for enabling simultaneous, flexible and efficient transfer of heat from thermal energy sources to end users.

Data Privacy for the Grid: Toward a Data Privacy Standard for Inverter-Based and Distributed Energy Resources

The traditional approach to planning the distribution grid has focused on reliability in the context of gradual and reasonably predictable load growth. Forecasts of load growth, combined with asset management practices, were used by system planners to identify upgrades to the system to maintain or improve reliability. The decisions, typically based within load flow analysis tools, included considerations about contingency scenarios and corporate forecasts (i.e., top-down predictions at a summary level of what would happen in a particular area that could impact load growth and behavior). As a result, today, this traditional approach no longer fits all purposes.

Advancing Electric System Resilience with Distributed Energy Resources: Key Questions and Resources

This resource has two complementary parts: (1) A list of questions that offers an initial starting point for state public utility commissions (commissions) to frame how they review proposed utility investments and considerations that could offer resilience benefits; (2) A list of relevant resources to improve a regulator's ability to oversee resilience investments and obtain the best possible solutions for customers. The list of resources includes a synopsis of relevant topics covered in each resource. This document is not intended to offer a complete picture of resilience literature, but instead suggests strategies for state regulators to convene conversations and make decisions to achieve better resilience outcomes for customers. It is meant to serve as a starting point for commissions to understand and incorporate resilience into regulatory processes. The list of questions and resources will not be perfectly suited to the particular needs of each commission. As the resilience conversation advances, regulators will need to take advantage of available resources to build their capacity to assess resilience risks, compare investment options, and evaluate performance.

Cyber Physical Grid-Interactive Distributed Energy Resources Control for VPP Dispatch and Regulation: Preprint

This paper presents a cyber-physical algorithm for grid interactive DER control to enable two features of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) dispatch and grid voltage regulation, considering the communication and security impacts. We first formulate the DER dispatch problem as a real-time, iterative, and grid-interactive DER control problem. Thereafter, we consider a probabilistic traffic model to characterize packet delays and loss in a communication network, and study how the delays enter the process of information exchange among the grid measurement units, local DER controllers and the grid control center that coordinately execute this dispatch algorithm. Finally, we propose a cyber-physical grid-interactive DER control algorithm using the previous message strategy. The tracking and regulation capabilities of this proposed algorithm can be made immune to the asynchrony resulting from the communications network traffic. We carry out simulations to show possible numerical instabilities and sensitivities of the tracking and regulation capabilities on the proposed strategy. Our results exhibit that the uncertainties of the underlying communications infrastructure must be considered in the control algorithm for the VPP tracking and regulation capabilities of any DER in a generic Cyber-Physical System (CPS).
