User data dissemination concepts for earth resources: Executive summary

The impact of the future capabilities of earth-resources data sensors (both satellite and airborne) and their requirements on the data dissemination network were investigated and optimum ways of configuring this network were determined. The scope of this study was limited to the continental U.S.A. (including Alaska) and to the 1985-1995 time period. Some of the conclusions and recommendations reached were: (1) Data from satellites in sun-synchronous polar orbits (700-920 km) will generate most of the earth-resources data in the specified time period. (2) Data from aircraft and shuttle sorties cannot be readily integrated in a data-dissemination network unless already preprocessed in a digitized form to a standard geometric coordinate system. (3) Data transmission between readout stations and central preprocessing facilities, and between processing facilities and user facilities are most economically performed by domestic communication satellites. (4) The effect of the following factors should be studied: cloud cover, expanded coverage, pricing strategies, multidiscipline missions.

Analysis of lunar laser ranging data for Earth dynamics applications

The effects of elasticity and of tidal friction within the Moon were incorporated into the numerical model of the Moon's rotation which was used in an effort to determine the axial rotation of the Earth, as measured by Universal Time. Some 2,651 normal points representing ranges measured to Lunokhod 2, and to the Apollo 11, 14, and 15 retroflectors were analyzed. Smoothed estimates derived from the lunar rangefinding were compared with smoothed values published by the International Bureau of Time, in the 1968 and 1969 systems. The derived values at the observation sight were connected to corresponding values at the Conventional International Origin, using the BIH data for polar motion. Differences are discussed.

Application of a Dataset-Publication Knowledge Graph for Improving Earth Science Data Search

Finding a dataset at a NASA data center that is the best fit for the researcher’s application presents a challenge, not only for a novice user but for an experienced one, due to the data complexity and a multitude of choices of the existing data. Users often search for the data based on the application they are interested in, their research domain, phenomena, research topic, etc. As existing dataset metadata may not cover these search terms, the user may not obtain the most relevant results for their purpose. This problem was addressed by leveraging the content of the titles and abstracts of the research papers that utilize NASA datasets. For this, features from the paper titles and abstracts were extracted, and then a knowledge graph (KG) was used to link these features to the datasets used in that paper. The search for the datasets was tested by querying this knowledge graph through various terms extracted from Earth Science ontologies such as Semantic Web for Earth and Environment Technology (SWEET), and it was shown that this KG search outperforms the existing search that exclusively queries the dataset metadata.

Determination of thawing snow and ice surfaces using earth satellite data

The apparent differential spectral reflectance is reported as sensed by the imaging dissector camera system in the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and by the high resolution infrared radiometer in the near-IR portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Both instruments were aboard the Nimbus 3 satellite.

Investigations using data from Earth Resources Technology Satellite in the fields of agriculture/geography. Timber inventory (land use) in the Province of Huelva, Spain

A test site was chosen for the purpose of elaborating the patterns for the future total use of the satellite photographs. The election of the test site was made with the following criteria in mind: (1) a flat terrain for eliminating the dangers of shadows produced by a difficult topography; and (2) searching of well defined natural limits for the test site. Due to the lack of satellite photographs from the study area, a number of photos from the northern area of Spain have been studied from the point of view of obtaining answers from the spectra of the vegetation masses.

A study of the usefulness of Skylab EREP data for earth resources studies in Australia

The author has identified the following significant results. The stereo cover of the Skylab photos, their clarity, and their resolution put them far above the ERTS imagery not only in distinguishing between patterns but also in determining the nature of the country. The following land systems: (1) plains with sand dunes; (2) ridges, foothills, and alluvial plains; (3) dune-covered country with stony hills; and (4) alluvial plains were indistinguishable on the ERTS imagery. However, the same places are clearly distinguishable on the Skylab photos, together with the character of the dunes (parallel, reticulate, or irregular).

Sensitometric data for earth resources film

Sensitometry is applied to all photographic earth resources mission film processing. The exposure is made using an intensity modulated sensitometer with a 2850 K source filtered to produce a 5500 K spectral distribution. In addition, any filters used on the sensor are included in the sensitometer filter pack in order to accurately simulate the exposure conditions. The modulator consists of a continuous carbon wedge and a 20-step carbon step tablet.
