Superconducting coherence peak in near-field radiative heat transfer

Enhancement and peaks in near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) typically arise due to surface phonon-polaritons, plasmon-polaritons, and electromagnetic (EM) modes in structured materials. However, the role of material quantum coherence in enhancing near-field radiative heat transfer remains unexplored. Here, we unravel that NFRHT in superconductor-ferromagnetic systems displays a unique peak at the superconducting phase transition that originates from the quantum coherence of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in superconductors. Our theory takes into account evanescent EM radiation emanating from fluctuating currents related to Cooper pairs and Bogoliubov quasiparticles in stark contrast to the current-current correlations induced by free electrons in conventional materials. Our proposed NFRHT configuration exploits ferromagnetic resonance at frequencies deep inside the superconducting band gap to isolate this superconducting coherence peak. Furthermore, we reveal that Cooper pairs and Bogoliubov quasiparticles have opposite effects on near-field thermal radiation and isolate their effects on many-body radiative heat transfer near superconductors. As a result, our proposed phenomenon can have applications for developing thermal isolators and heat sinks in superconducting circuits.

Interfacial reconstruction effects in insulating double perovskite Nd2NiMnO6/SrTiO3 and Nd2NiMnO6/NdGaO3 thin films

Ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) double perovskite oxides (DPOs) A2BB′O6 with near-room-temperature Curie temperatures are promising candidates for ambient-temperature spintronics applications. To realize their potential, epitaxial stabilization of DPO films and understanding the effect of multiple broken symmetries across the film/substrate interface are crucial. This study investigates ultrathin films of the FMI Nd2NiMnO6 grown on SrTiO3 (STO) and NdGaO3 (NGO) substrates. By comparing growth on these substrates, we examine the influence of polarity and structural symmetry mismatches, which are absent in the NGO system. The interface exhibits immeasurable resistance in both cases. Using synchrotron x-ray diffraction, we show that films have three octahedral rotational domains because of the structural symmetry mismatch with the STO substrate. Furthermore, our coherent Bragg rod analysis of specular x-ray diffraction reveals a significant modification of the out-of-plane lattice parameter within a few unit cells at the film/substrate interface and the surface. This arises from polarity compensation and surface symmetry breaking, respectively. These structural alterations influence the Mn orbital symmetry, a dependence that we further confirm through x-ray linear dichroism measurements. Since the ferromagnetism in insulating DPOs is mediated by orbital-dependent superexchange interactions [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 186402 (2008)0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.100.186402], our study provides a framework for understanding the evolution of magnetism in ultrathin geometry.

Magnetism in EuAlSi and the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution solid solution

The magnetic properties of EuAlSi, a compound comprising a honeycomb lattice of Al/Si atoms and a triangular lattice of Eu atoms, are presented. By means of single-crystal x-ray diffraction, we find that EuAlSi crystallizes in an AlB 2 -type structure with space group 𝑃⁢6/mmm and unit cell parameters 𝑎 = 4.2229⁢ (10) ⁢Å and 𝑐 = 4.5268 ⁢(12)⁢ Å. Our magnetic measurements indicate that EuAlSi is a soft ferromagnetic material with 𝑇 Curie = 25.8 K. The susceptibility follows the Curie-Weiss law at high temperatures, which allowed us to determine the paramagnetic Curie temperature 𝜃 𝑃 = 36.2 ⁢(1) ⁢K and an effective magnetic moment 𝜇 eff = 8.07 ⁢(1)⁢ µ 𝐵 /Eu. This value is in agreement with the theoretical value of 7.9 µ 𝐵 for Eu 2+ free ion. Moreover, we have prepared the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi solid solution, where the atoms in the triangular lattice were systematically exchanged, in order to study the evolution of the collective quantum properties from the ferromagnetic EuAlSi toward the superconducting SrAlSi. Across the Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 AlSi solid solution, the unit cell parameters change linearly, following Vegard’s law, and making the system reliable for studying composition dependence of the interplay between the crystal structure and physical properties. As the Sr content increases, i.e., 𝑥 increases, we note a consistent reduction of 𝜇 eff and 𝑇 Curie . Long-range magnetic order in Eu 1−𝑥 ⁢Sr 𝑥 ⁢ AlSi persists up to 𝑥 = 0.95, whereas superconductivity is only observed for samples with 𝑥 > 0.97.

Robustness of Vacancy-Bound Non-Abelian Anyons in the Kitaev Model in a Magnetic Field

Non-Abelian anyons in quantum spin liquids (QSLs) provide a promising route to fault-tolerant topological quantum computation. In the exactly solvable Kitaev honeycomb model, such anyons of the QSL state can be bound to nonmagnetic spin vacancies and endowed with non-Abelian statistics by an infinitesimal magnetic field. Here, we investigate how this approach for stabilizing non-Abelian anyons extends to a finite magnetic field represented by a proper Zeeman term. Through large-scale density-matrix renormalization group simulations, we compute the vacancy-anyon binding energy as a function of magnetic field for both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev models. Here, we find that anyon binding remains robust within the entire QSL phase for the ferromagnetic Kitaev model but breaks down already inside this phase for the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model. To compute a binding energy several orders of magnitude below the magnetic energy scale, we introduce both a refined definition and an extrapolation scheme based on carefully tailored perturbations.

Observation of multiple flat bands and Van Hove singularities in the distorted kagome metal NdTi 3 Bi 4

Kagome materials have attracted enormous research interest recently owing to their diverse topological phases and manifestation of electronic correlation. Here, in this study, we present the electronic structure of a distorted ferromagnetic kagome metal, NdTi 3 ⁢Bi 4 , exhibiting a transition temperature of 9 K. Our investigation employs a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We discover the presence of two “flat” bands which are found to originate from the kagome structure formed by Ti atoms with a major contribution from Ti 𝑑 𝑥⁢𝑦 and Ti 𝑑 𝑥 2 −𝑦 2 orbitals. We also observed multiple Van Hove singularities (VHSs) in its electronic structure, with one VHS lying near the Fermi level. The ARPES data reveal the existence of Dirac cone at the $\overline{𝐾}$ point, a finding which is corroborated by our DFT calculations. These findings present a detailed electronic structure capable of hosting correlation-driven phenomenon in this novel ferromagnetic kagome metal.

Tailoring physical properties of crystals through synthetic temperature control: A case study for new polymorphic NbFeT e 2 phases

Growth parameters play a significant role in the crystal quality and physical properties of layered materials. Here we present a case study on a van der Waals magnetic NbFeTe 2 material. Two different types of polymorphic NbFeTe 2 phases, synthesized at different temperatures, display significantly different behaviors in crystal symmetry, electronic structure, electrical transport, and magnetism. While the phase synthesized at low temperature showing behavior consistent with previous reports, the new phase synthesized at high temperature, has completely different physical properties, such as metallic resistivity, long-range ferromagnetic order, anomalous Hall effect, negative magnetoresistance, and distinct electronic structures. Neutron diffraction reveals out-of-plane ferromagnetism below 70 K, consistent with the electrical transport and magnetic susceptibility studies. Finally, our work suggests that simply tuning synthetic parameters in a controlled manner could be an effective route to alter the physical properties of existing materials potentially unlocking new states of matter, or even discovering new materials.

Coexistence of low and high spin states in La 18 Co 28 Pb 3

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of a newly predicted stable ternary compound La 18 ⁢Co 28 ⁢Pb 3 are studied using electronic structure analysis. The ground state of this compound is ferromagnetic, with three positions of nonequivalent magnetic Co atoms. A strong dependence of magnetic properties on volume shows that this system is situated near the point of magnetic instability. The coexistence of high- and low-spin ferromagnetic states as a function of volume near equilibrium was discovered. A corresponding spin tunneling splitting was estimated. The stability of the theoretically predicted magnetic ground state was tested by varying the Hubbard parameter. The thermal spin fluctuations were added to estimate the paramagnetic moment and a Curie temperature. Finally, the necessity of experimental verification of the obtained results is emphasized.

Hopping crossover and high-temperature superspin glass behavior in Ni films deposited on MoS 2

Realizing the potential of MoS 2 and other two-dimensional semiconductors in spintronic devices requires a fundamental understanding of their interaction with ferromagnetic metals. We have investigated the transport and magnetic properties of thin Ni films grown on single-crystal MoS 2 substrates. The Ni is found to have a granular morphology with an average grain size of approximately 2 nm. Like previously investigated granular Ni/insulator composites below the percolation threshold, transport is found to proceed via hopping. However, our Ni/MoS 2 sample exhibits a dual crossover: activated hopping to 𝑇−1/2 variable-range hopping at a higher temperature and then a transition to power-law behavior at a lower temperature. The magnetoresistance was used as a novel probe for uncovering superspin-glass-like behavior above room temperature in the Ni/MoS 2 nanostructure, which also exhibits a collective ferromagnetic state at very low temperatures, reminiscent of superferromagnetism.

Observation of paramagnetic spin-degeneracy lifting in EuZn 2 Sb 2

Taken together, time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetries impose a twofold spin degeneracy of the electronic states in crystals. In centrosymmetric materials, this degeneracy can be lifted by introducing magnetism, either via an externally applied field or through internal magnetization. However, a correlated alignment of spins, even in the paramagnetic phase, can lift the spin degeneracy of electronic states. Here, we report an in-depth study of the electronic band structure of the Eu-ternary pnictide EuZn 2 Sb 2 through a combination of high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations. An analysis of the photoemission line shapes over a range of incident photon energies and sample temperatures is shown to reveal the presence of band spin-degeneracy lifting in the paramagnetic phase. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results are in good agreement with theoretical ferromagnetic-phase calculations, which indicates the importance of ferromagnetic fluctuations in the system. Through our calculations, we predict that spin-polarized bands in EuZn 2 Sb 2 generate a single pair of Weyl nodes. Our observation of band splittingin EuZn 2 Sb 2 provides a key step toward realizing time-reversal symmetry breaking physics in the absence of long-range magnetic order.

Effect of Ni substitution on the fragile magnetic system La 5 Co 2 Ge 3

La 5⁢ Co 2 ⁢Ge 3 is an itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C of ~3.8K and a remarkably small saturated moment of 0.1µ B /Co. Here we present the growth and characterization of single crystals of the La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x⁢ Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 series for 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.186. Here we measured powder x-ray diffraction, composition as well as anisotropic temperature-dependent resistivity, temperature and field-dependent magnetization along with heat capacity on these single crystals. We also measured muon-spin rotation/relaxation (μ⁢SR) for some Ni substitutions (x = 0.027,0.036,0.074) to study the evolution of internal field with Ni substitution. Using the measured data we infer a low temperature, transition temperature-composition phase diagram for La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 . We find that T C is suppressed for low dopings, x ≤ 0.014; whereas for 0.036 ≤ x ≤ 0.186, the samples are antiferromagnetic with a Néel temperature T N that goes through a weak and shallow maximum (T N ~ 3.4K for x~0.07) and then gradually decreases to 2.4 K by x = 0.186. For intermediate Ni substitutions, 0.016 ≤ x ≤ 0.027, two transition temperatures are inferred with T N >T C . Whereas the T–x phase diagram for La 5 ⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 Ge 3 and the T–p phase diagram determined for the parent La 5 ⁢Co 2 ⁢Ge 3 under hydrostatic pressure are grossly similar, changing from a low-doping or low-pressure ferromagnetic (FM) ground state to a high-doped or high-pressure antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, perturbation by Ni substitution enabled us to identify an intermediate doping regime where both FM and AFM transitions occur.

Magnetic phase diagram of a two-orbital model for bilayer nickelates with varying doping

Motivated by the recently discovered high-T c bilayer nickelate superconductor La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , we comprehensively research a bilayer 2×2×2 cluster for different electronic densities n by using the Lanczos method. We also employ the random-phase approximation to quantify the first magnetic instability with increasing Hubbard coupling strength, also varying n. Based on the spin structure factor S(q), we have obtained a rich magnetic phase diagram in the plane defined by n and U/W, at fixed Hund coupling, where U is the Hubbard strength and W the bandwidth. We have observed numerous states, such as A-AFM, Stripes, G-AFM, and C-AFM. At half-filling, n=2 (two electrons per Ni site, corresponding to N=16 electrons), the canonical superexchange interaction leads to a robust G-AFM state (π,π,π) with antiferromagnetic couplings both in-plane and between layers. By increasing or decreasing electronic densities, ferromagnetic tendencies emerge from the “half-empty” and “half-full” mechanisms, leading to many other interesting magnetic tendencies. In addition, the spin-spin correlations become weaker both in the hole or electron doping regions compared with half-filling. At n=1.5 (or N=12), density corresponding to La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , we obtained the “Stripe 2” ground state (antiferromagnetic coupling in one in-plane direction, ferromagnetic coupling in the other, and antiferromagnetic coupling along the z axis) in the 2×2×2 cluster. In addition, we obtained a much stronger AFM coupling along the z axis than the magnetic coupling in the xy plane. The random-phase approximation calculations with varying n give very similar results as Lanczos, even though both techniques are based on quite different procedures. Additionally, a state with q/π=(0.6,0.6,1) close to the E-phase wavevector is found in our RPA calculations by slightly reducing the filling to n=1.25, possibly responsible for the E-phase SDW recently observed in experiments. In conclusion, our predictions can be tested by chemically doping La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 .

Controlling topology through targeted composite symmetry manipulation in magnetic systems

The possibility of selecting magnetic space groups by orienting the magnetization direction or tuning magnetic orders offers a vast playground for engineering symmetry-protected topological phases in magnetic materials. In this work, we study how selective tuning of symmetry and magnetism can influence and control the resulting topology in a two-dimensional magnetic system, and we illustrate such a procedure in the ferromagnetic monolayer MnPSe 3 . Density functional theory calculations reveal a symmetry-protected accidental semimetallic (SM) phase for out-of-plane magnetization, which becomes an insulator when the magnetization is tilted in-plane, reaching band-gap values close to 100 meV. We identify an order-2 composite antiunitary symmetry and threefold rotational symmetry that induce the band crossing, and we classify the possible topological phases using symmetry analysis, which we support with tight-binding and k · p models. Breaking of inversion symmetry opens a gap in the SM phase, giving rise to a Chern insulator. We demonstrate this explicitly in the isostructural Janus compound Mn 2 ⁢P 2 ⁢S 3 ⁢Se 3 , which naturally exhibits Rashba spin-orbit coupling that breaks inversion symmetry. Our results map out the phase space of topological properties of ferromagnetic transition-metal phosphorus trichalcogenides, and they demonstrate the potential of the magnetization-dependent metal-to-insulator transition as a spin switch in integrated two-dimensional electronics.

Magnetic properties of the double trillium lattice antiferromagnet KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3

Trillium lattices formed by corner-shared triangular units are the platform for magnetic frustration in three dimensions. Herein, we report structural and magnetic properties of the Cr-based (S = 3/2) double trillium lattice material KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 studied by x-ray diffraction, dc and ac magnetization, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements complemented by density-functional band-structure calculations. Magnetization, heat capacity, and 31 P NMR measurements reveal the magnetic transition at T N⁢1 ≃ 12.5 K in zero field followed by another transition (T N⁢2 ) at low temperatures in weak applied fields. The 31 P spin-lattice relaxation rate in the ordered state follows the T 3 behavior indicative of the two-magnon Raman process. Finally, the spin lattice of KBaCr 2 ⁢(PO 4 ) 3 comprises two crystallographically nonequivalent ferromagnetic sublattices that are coupled antiferromagnetically, thus eliminating frustration in this trillium network and leading to weak ferromagnetism in the vicinity of T N⁢1 .

Topological and magnetic properties of a noncollinear spin state on a honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field

Here, this paper studies the topological and magnetic properties of a noncollinear spin state on a honeycomb lattice that evolves from coplanar to ferromagnetic with a magnetic field applied along the z axis. The coplanar state is stabilized by nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions, single-ion anisotropy along z, and DzyaloshinskiiMoriya interactions between next-nearest-neighbor sites. Below the critical field H$_c$ that aligns the spins, the magnetic unit cell contains six sites and the spin dynamics contains six magnon modes. Although the classical energy is degenerate with respect to the twist angle φ between nearest-neighbor spins, the dependence of the free energy on φ at low temperatures is dominated by the magnon zero-point energy, which contains extremum at φ = πl/3 for integer l. The only unique ground states GS(φ) have l = 0 or 1. For H < H$'_c$, the zero-point energy has minima at even l and the ground state is GS(0); for H$'_c$ < H < H$'_c$, the zero-point energy has minima at odd l and the ground state is GS(π/3). In GS(0), the magnon density of states exhibits five distinct topological phases with increasing field associated with the opening and closing of energy gaps between two or three magnonic bands. While the Berry curvature vanishes for the coplanar φ = 0 phase in zero field, the Berry curvature and Chern numbers exhibit signatures of the five topological phases below H$'_c$. Whereas the Berry curvature and Chern number are sensitive to changes in the magnon density of states within GS(π/3), the inelastic spectrum S(k,ω) is sensitive to changes in the intensity of the magnon modes in the different magnetic phases GS(0) and GS(π/3) rather than the five topological phases within GS(π/3).

Magnetic glassiness in noncentrosymmetric Sm 7 Pd 3 : Interplay of magnetic frustration, long-range order, and frozen domains

Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the intricate spin dynamics in the noncentrosymmetric compound Sm 7 ⁢Pd 3 , revealing the coexistence of spin-glass, domain-glass, and ferromagnetic (FM) behaviors. Magnetic field-dependent measurements indicate large coercivity, suggesting ferromagnetic domain formation below the Curie temperature (𝑇 C ≈ 173 K), while temperature-dependent magnetization data point to antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling, highlighting the competition between FM and AFM interactions. Detailed ac susceptibility, isothermal remanent magnetization, and aging effect measurements demonstrate the presence of two distinct types of glassiness in the sample, and their possible origins are discussed extensively. Magnetization measurements reveal the mixing of the 𝐽 = 5/2 ground state of Sm 3+ with the excited 𝐽 = 7/2 multiplet, lying 965 K above. The specific heat data show further crystalline electric field splitting of the 𝐽 = 5/2 state into a ground-state doublet and a fourfold-degenerate excited state.

Disorder driven crossover between anomalous Hall regimes in Fe 3 GaTe 2

The large anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) of the Fe 3 ⁢(Ge,Ga)⁢Te 2 compounds has attracted considerable attention. Here, we expose the intrinsic nature of the AHC in Fe 3 ⁢GaTe 2 crystals characterized by high conductivities, which show disorder-independent AHC with a pronounced value 𝜎$^{c}_{𝑥⁢𝑦}$≈ 420 Ω −1 ⁢cm −1 . In the low-conductivity regime, we observe the scaling relation 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑦 ∝ 𝜎$^{1.6}_{𝑥⁢𝑥}$, which crosses over to 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑦 ≃ 𝜎$^{c}_{𝑥⁢𝑦}$ as 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑥 increases. Disorder in low-conductivity crystals is confirmed by the broadening of a first-order transition between ferromagnetism and the ferrimagnetic ground state. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that the dominant sources of Berry curvature are located a few hundred meV below the Fermi energy around the Γ point. Furthermore, Fe 3⁢ GaTe 2 clearly exposes the disorder-induced crossover among distinct AHC regimes, previously inferred from measurements on different ferromagnets located on either side of the crossover region.

Superconducting phase diagram in Bi x Ni 1 – x thin films: The effects of Bi stoichiometry on superconductivity

The Bi-Ni binary system has been of interest due to possible unconventional superconductivity aroused therein, such as time-reversal symmetry breaking in Bi/Ni bilayers or the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in Bi 3 ⁢Ni crystals. While Ni acts as a ferromagnetic element in such systems, the role of the strong spin-orbit coupling element Bi in superconductivity has remained unexplored. In this work, we systematically studied the effects of Bi stoichiometry on the superconductivity of Bi x ⁢Ni 1–x thin films (x ≈ 0.5–0.9) fabricated via a composition-spread approach. Here, the superconducting phase map of Bi x ⁢Ni 1–x thin films exhibited a superconducting composition region attributable to the intermetallic Bi 3 ⁢Ni phase with different amounts of excess Bi, revealed by synchrotron x-ray diffraction analysis. Interestingly, the mixed-phase region with Bi 3 ⁢Ni and Bi showed unusual increases in the superconducting transition temperature and residual resistance ratio as more Bi impurities were included, with the maximum T c (=4.2K) observed at x ≈ 0.79. A correlation analysis of structural, electrical, and magneto-transport characteristics across the composition variation revealed that the unusual superconducting “dome” is due to two competing roles of Bi: impurity scattering and carrier doping. We found that the carrier doping effect is dominant in the mild doping regime (0.74 ≤ x ≤ 0.79), while impurity scattering becomes more pronounced at larger Bi stoichiometry.

Crystal growth and evolution of magnetism in the EuCuP-EuCuAs solid solution

The hexagonal EuMX (M = Cu, Ag, Au; X = P, As, Sb, Bi) compounds host interesting electronic and magnetic properties, with seemingly intertwined topology and transport properties. One key feature of such behavior is the nature of the ordered magnetic structure. In EuCuAs, a topological Hall effect is caused by a conical spin structure that emerges when a field is applied within the easy-plane (H ⊥ c) of the helical ground state that exists below the Neel temperature of T N = 14 K. On the other hand, EuCuP is an easy-axis ferromagnet with a Curie temperature T C near 31 K. Here, in this study, we investigate the evolution of the magnetic properties in EuCuAs 1-x P x single crystals with 0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.75. Crystals grown by cooling slowly in a Sn flux possessed macroscale inhomogeneity of As/P, particularly for arsenic-rich crystals. However, growth in a Sn flux via an isothermal dwell at 600 °C produced crystals that were homogeneous within the resolution of the probes utilized to investigate these crystals. The unit cell volumes, Curie-Weiss temperatures, and magnetic transitions trend linearly with composition and the magnetic anisotropy is reduced in the alloys. The magnetization data of crystals with x = 0.16 and 0.24 indicate an easy-plane antiferromagnetic ground state while ferromagneticlike behavior is observed for crystals with x ≥ 0.41. The temperature-dependent magnetization data possess multiple transitions for compositions near EuCuAs 0.75 P 0.25 , revealing a competition of ground states in this arsenic-rich region of the phase diagram. Neutron diffraction data for EuCuP are also presented as a follow up to previous results that revealed a two-step transition at T C ; the observed data were consistent with ferromagnetic order at T = 5K.
