SIERRA/Aero Theory Manual - Version 4.58

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment.

A whole-core steady-state thermal-hydraulic model for annular fuel type fluoride-salt-cooled reactors

A whole-core, steady-state thermal-hydraulic model is developed for the fluoride-salt-cooled small modular advanced high-temperature reactor (SmAHTR) that employs an annular fuel configuration. This pre-conceptual reactor design by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has the annular fuel and moderator pins arranged in a hexagonal layout. The FLiBe coolant flows from the bottom to the top of the core, parallel to the hexagonal bundle. The fuel and moderator pins in the core are discretized into finite volumes and the 3-D heat conduction equation is solved to obtain the temperature profile. Inter-fuel assembly conduction is also addressed. For this fuel assembly configuration, the coolant flows through two distinct regions – the hexagonal pin bundle and the annulus between the fuel pin and the tie rod. The fluid flow through the hexagonal bundles is modeled using the subchannel approach, in which the coolant region is discretized into corner, edge and interior subchannels and the resulting conservation equations are systematically solved. The 1-D mass, momentum and energy equations are solved for the annulus channels between the fuel pin and the tie rod. Pertinent closure models from the literature are employed to close the system of equations. We also performed a preliminary code-to-code comparison between the present model and a CFD model.. The resulting thermal-hydraulic model can provide temperature, flow rate and pressure drop profiles for the different solid and fluid regions throughout the entire core. Whole-core thermal-hydraulic results for a representative power profile are presented and discussed.

Modelling a compressible packed bed flow-through washing and deacetylation reactor for corn stover pretreatment

The deacetylation process is a key step in the lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment process that currently is done in batch reactors. A flow-through diffuser type reactor is a promising approach to make the process more efficient and economically favorable. A washing step before deacetylation can further reduce chemical usage and increase the process efficiency. However, the highly compacted biomass particles can cause significant pressure-drop for fluid flow through the bed, which in the worst case can cause self-enhancing pressure-drop leading to reactor blocking. Detailed understanding of the fundamentals of flow through a compressible packed bed is necessary to scale up the washing and deacetylation process. This work closely examines the classical Kozeny Carman equation and proposes modifications to accurately predict the pressure-drop at different compaction states. Here, a compressible packed bed model is further developed based on the interaction between solid mechanics and fluid dynamics. Experimental measurements of water flow through a packed bed of corn stover show good agreement with the developed model. Corn stover washing process scale up simulations show that smaller reactor diameter, higher friction lining material, lower process throughput, and higher process temperature is favorable in stabilizing the bed from extensive compression when the bed height is fixed.

Modeling Nanoconfinement Effects Using Active Learning

Predicting the spatial configuration of gas in nanopores of is relevant in applications such as fluid flow forecasting and hydrocarbon reserves estimation. For example, shale reservoirs have suffered from computationally intractable multiscale problems, since fluid properties such as viscosity, density, and adsorption must be calculated by using expensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations within each nanopore, whereas flow through these connected nanopores must be simulated at the micrometer scale. We utilize machine learning techniques to quickly and accurately model nanoscale confinement effects as an important step toward bridging the nano and micro scales. Our workflow is based on building and training physics-based deep-neural-networks models by learning from a database of MD calculations. The model accounts for the adsorption phenomenon by predicting the statistical distribution of gas inside nanopores. Because large databases of MD calculations are expensive to create, we investigate active learning (AL) as a data set construction strategy. In this workflow, new data are selected based on the model uncertainty via the query-by-committee approach. We show that our workflow obtains accurate models that generalize to real scanning electron microscopy geometries with 1/10th of the number of MD calculations required vs random data set generation. Our method enables the possibility of modeling nanoconfinement effects at the mesoscale, where complex connected sets of nanopores affect flow.

Fully quantum algorithm for mesoscale fluid simulations with application to partial differential equations

Fluid flow simulations marshal our most powerful computational resources. In many cases, even this is not enough. Quantum computers provide an opportunity to speed up traditional algorithms for flow simulations. We show that lattice-based mesoscale numerical methods can be executed as efficient quantum algorithms due to their statistical features. This approach revises a quantum algorithm for lattice gas automata to reduce classical computations and state preparation at every time step. For this, the algorithm approximates the qubit relative phases and subtracts them at the end of each time step. Phases are evaluated using the iterative phase estimation algorithm and subtracted using single-qubit rotation phase gates. Further, this method optimizes the quantum resource required and makes it more appropriate for near-term quantum hardware. We also demonstrate how the checkerboard deficiency that the D1Q2 scheme presents can be resolved using the D1Q3 scheme. The algorithm is validated by simulating two canonical partial differential equations: the diffusion and Burgers' equations on different quantum simulators. We find good agreement between quantum simulations and classical solutions for the presented algorithm.
