An Overview of the Formation and Attitude Control System for the Terrestrial Planet Finder Formation Flying Interferometer

The Terrestrial Planet Finder formation flying Interferometer (TPF-I) will be a five-spacecraft, precision formation operating near a Sun-Earth Lagrange point. As part of technology development for TPF-I, a formation and attitude control system (FACS) is being developed that achieves the precision and functionality associated with the TPF-I formation. This FACS will be demonstrated in a distributed, real-time simulation environment. In this paper we present an overview of the FACS and discuss in detail its constituent formation estimation, guidance and control architectures and algorithms. Since the FACS is currently being integrated into a high-fidelity simulation environment, component simulations demonstrating algorithm performance are presented.

Flight-Tested Hardware Options Currently Available to Support Fruit Fly Science Missions on ISS

The Fruit Fly Lab team at Ames Research Center has developed and flown several versions of hardware to ISS that have been utilized to conduct research using the model organism, Drosophila melanogaster. These sets of hardware vary in complexity and capabilities and can be matched to experiments based on specific aims objectives and considerations for cost, updownmass, and crew time requirements. The team has multiple investigators slated to utilize this hardware on near-term missions to ISS, and is expecting more from future calls for proposals.

Spacecraft Autonomous Navigation for Formation Flying Earth Orbiters Using GPS

This paper extends earlier analysis for autonomous orbit determination and control of Earth orbiting spacecraft. The earlier analysis was limited to a single spacecraft with a ground track repeat requirement. This work shows that a similar technique is applicable for two spacecraft flying in formation. Tracking and orbit determination functions are performed using the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Flight Dynamics Analysis of Lunar Fly-By Altitudes and Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO) Resonances With Applications to NASA's Artemis Program

As the interest in lunar exploration grows exponentially, many companies and government agencies around the world are looking to establish presence on the lunar surface. With NASA’s Artemis program and Lunar Gateway, NASA seeks to return to the moon and for exploration. To achieve such goals, many orbit regimes and patterns were explored. Due to its minimal station keeping requirements and communications access, a specific set of Halo Orbits known as Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits (NRHO) was selected for use cases in both NASA’s Artemis Program as well as Lunar Gateway. The primary objective of this effort is to perform a flight dynamics analysis, which analyzes trajectories targeting specific lunar fly-by altitudes and NRHO Resonances in the L2 Southern Family.
