Hafnia-rich mixed oxide ceramics of the system HfO2-ZrO2-TiO2 for heaters and heat exchangers in electrothermal thrusters: The effects of titania on selected electrical and mechanical properties of Hafnia-rich mixed oxides in the system Hafnia-Zirconia-Titania, volume 1

A study of the effects of titania on selected properties of hafnia-rich mixed oxides in the system hafnia-zirconia-titania (HZT) was made in the region 5 to 20 mol percent titania. The studied properties included electrical conductivity, thermal expansion, and fracture strength and toughness. The effects of titania on the properties were studied for the reduced state as well as the oxidized state of the sintered mixed oxides. X-ray analysis showed that the materials were not always single phase. The oxidized compositions went from being monoclinic solid solutions at low titania additions to having three phases (two monoclinic and a titanate phase) at high additions of titania. The reduced compositions showed an increasing cubic phase presence mixed with the monoclinic phase as titania was added. The electrical conductivity increased with temperature at approximately 0.1 mhos/cm at 1700 C for all compositions. The thermal expansion coefficient decreased with increasing titania as did the monoclinic to tetragonal transformation temperature. The fracture strength of the oxidized bars tended to decrease with the addition of titania owing to the presence of the second phase titania. The fracture strength of the reduced bars exhibited a minimum corresponding to a two-phase region of monoclinic and cubic phases. When the second phases were suppressed, the titania tended to increase the fracture strength slightly in both the oxidized and reduced states. The fracture toughness followed similar trends.

Effect of transition on oscillation flow losses in Stirling engine coolers and heaters

To improve the prediction of Stirling engine performance, a more realistic model of oscillating flow losses in tubular heat exchangers is necessary. An experimental investigation has therefore been initiated to determine the effects of flow oscillation on fluid mechanics and heat transfer in ducts. This paper presents the first velocity measurements taken in this investigation.

Observations on the DE 1 spacecraft of ELF/VLF waves generated by an ionospheric heater

DE 1 satellite radio observations were conducted in the 1525-5925 Hz range during a pass over an ionospheric heating facility; the waves were detected during a 2-min period, and the measurements indicated pulse-stretching by a few hundred msec, in conjunction with spectral broadening of about 10 Hz. The observed signal delays and pulse distortion are not consistent with expectations assuming propagation in a smooth magnetosphere between the assumed 'polar electrojet antenna' in the ionospheric D/E region and the 11,000-km altitude of the satellite. Scattering by density irregularities is judged the likely sources of the spectral broadening and delays.

Windshield-Wiper Heater

Heated blades significantly enhance safety of aircraft and automobiles. Electrical-resistance heating strips inside cover keep wiper blade warmer than freezing temperature. Applies heat directly to windshield wipers, preventing any ice or snow from accumulating on wipers.

Thermal analysis of an arc heater electrode with a rotating arc foot

A smoothly rotating arc foot and an arc foot that jumps between multiple sticking points were analyzed using analytic formulations and numerical solution procedures. For each case the temperature distribution for a copper electrode was obtained for the plausible range of operating conditions. It is shown that the smoothly rotating arc foot is an extremely safe mode of operation, whereas the jumping arc foot produces excessively high electrode surface temperatures which are not greatly alleviated by increasing the average rotational frequency of the arc foot. It is suggested to eliminate arc-foot rotation and rely on the distribution of fixed electrodes with stationary arc attachment to avoid electrode failure at high current.

Arc-heater performance research

The tasks performed can be divided into the following categories: an analysis of the electric arc phenomena, especially near the electrodes; a parametric study of arcjet performance by means of a computer code (ARCFLO) and verification with experimental data where possible; the development of a data acquisition system to collect the above experimental data using Ames arc-jets; and a study of the critical components (electrodes and constrictor disks) and suggestions of how to improve their performance.

Long-Term Durability Analysis of a 100,000+ Hr Stirling Power Convertor Heater Head

DOE and NASA have identified Stirling Radioisotope Power Systems (SRPS) as the power supply for deep space exploration missions the Europa Orbiter and Solar Probe. As a part of this effort, NASA has initiated a long-term durability project for critical hot section components of the Stirling power convertor to qualify flight hardware. This project will develop a life prediction methodology that utilizes short-term (t < 20,000 hr) test data to verify long-term (t > 100,000 hr) design life. The project consists of generating a materials database for the specific heat of alloy, evaluation of critical hermetic sealed joints, life model characterization, and model verification. This paper will describe the qualification methodology being developed and provide a status for this effort.

Chemical Composition and Flow Velocity as a Function of Operating Conditions for an Arc Jet Heater

We have used laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) to carry out a detailed, systematic survey of the properties of the free stream of the 20 Megawatt Aerodynamic Heating Facility at NASA/Ames Research Center. In both air and nitrogen flows we have measured the atomic nitrogen absolute number density and flow velocity at each operating condition. In air flows we have also measured the atomic oxygen absolute number density and rotational/translational temperature at each operating condition. These results have been used to provide, for the first time, a direct, nonintrusive measurement of the enthalpy on the centerline of the flow. In addition, the observed arc jet properties can be used to test and improve computer simulations of the arc jet flow which include detailed chemical rate processes (especially nitrogen atom recombination) taking place during the supersonic expansion.

Solar Water Heater

As a Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) scientist Dr. Eldon Haines studied the solar energy source and solar water heating. He concluded he could build a superior solar water heating system using the geyser pumping principle. He resigned from JPL to develop his system and later form Sage Advance Corporation to market the technology. Haines' Copper Cricket residential system has no moving parts, is immune to freeze damage, needs no roof-mounted tanks, and features low maintenance. It provides 50-90 percent of average hot water requirements. A larger system, the Copper Dragon, has been developed for commercial installations.
