Lattice dynamics of high-pressure hydrides studied by inelastic neutron scattering

Due to the small mass and anomalously large neutron scattering cross-section of proton (about 80 barns compared to a few barns for other nuclei), inelastic neutron scattering is considered as one of the most effective tools in studying optical vibrations of hydrogen atoms in metal hydrides. The current review is focused on the binary hydrides of 3d- and 4d-metals of groups VI–VIII, which were produced at high hydrogen pressures of several gigapascals in relatively large quantities of hundreds of mg, quenched to low temperature and studied by INS ex situ at ambient pressure with high statistical accuracy. One of the unusual effects revealed by INS is a strong increase in the strength of the metal-hydrogen interactions with decreasing atomic number of the d-metal accompanied by an increase in the Me-H distance. Based on the available experimental results, the spectra g(E) of the phonon density of states and temperature dependencies CV(T) of the heat capacity at constant volume at T up to 1000 K have been derived in this paper and presented both in the figures and in digital form. This provides the reference data for the theoretical investigations of the crystal structures and compositions of new practically important hydrides giving the opportunity to validate calculation methods by comparing the calculated g(E) and CV(T) with the accurate experimental dependencies for the binary hydrides. Recent INS studies showed [R.A. Klein et al., J. Alloy. Compd. 894 (2022) 162381] that the fingerprints of anomalously short H-H separations of 1.6 Å violating the “2 Å rule” can be easily and unambiguously identified in the complex INS spectra of quaternary hydrides (La,Ce)NiInH 1+x . This makes neutron spectroscopy an attractive means for obtaining valuable data in the search for novel hydrides with a record high hydrogen capacity.

Sustained strain applied at high rates drives dynamic tensioning in epithelial cells

Epithelial cells experience long lasting loads of different magnitudes and rates. How they adapt to these loads strongly impacts tissue health. Yet, much remains unknown about the evolution of cellular stress in response to sustained strain. Here, by subjecting cell pairs to sustained strain, we report a bimodal stress response, where in addition to the typically observed stress relaxation, a subset of cells exhibits a dynamic tensioning process with significant elevation in stress within 100 s, resembling active pulling-back in muscle fibers. Strikingly, the fraction of cells exhibiting tensioning increases with increasing strain rate. The tensioning response is accompanied by actin remodeling, and perturbation to actin abrogates it, supporting cell contractility’s role in the response. Collectively, our data show that epithelial cells adjust their tensional states over short timescales in a strain-rate dependent manner to adapt to sustained strains, demonstrating that the active pulling-back behavior could be a common protective mechanism against environmental stress.

Data-Driven Learning for the Mori--Zwanzig Formalism: A Generalization of the Koopman Learning Framework

A theoretical framework which unifies the conventional Mori--Zwanzig formalism and the approximate Koopman learning of deterministic dynamical systems from noiseless observation is presented. In this framework, the Mori--Zwanzig formalism, developed in statistical mechanics to tackle the hard problem of construction of reduced-order dynamics for high-dimensional dynamical systems, can be considered as a natural generalization of the Koopman description of the dynamical system. We next show that, similar to the approximate Koopman learning methods, data-driven methods can be developed for the Mori--Zwanzig formalism with Mori's linear projection operator. We have developed two algorithms to extract the key operators, the Markov and the memory kernel, using time series of a reduced set of observables in a dynamical system. We have adopted the Lorenz `96 system as a test problem and solved for the above operators. These operators exhibit complex behaviors, which are unlikely to be captured by traditional modeling approaches in Mori--Zwanzig analysis. The nontrivial generalized fluctuation-dissipation relationship, which relates the memory kernel with the two-time correlation statistics of the orthogonal dynamics, was numerically verified as a validation of the solved operators. Here we present numerical evidence that the generalized Langevin equation, a key construct in the Mori--Zwanzig formalism, is more advantageous in predicting the evolution of the reduced set of observables than the conventional approximate Koopman operators.

System and method for automated extraction of high resolution structural dynamics from video

A method for extracting vibrational modes of a structure includes: receiving a plurality of video frames, each of the video frames including a plurality of pixels; decomposing each of the video frames on a plurality of spatial scales in accordance with complex steerable pyramid filters to obtain a filter response for each of the spatial scales; computing a plurality of local phases of the pixels of each frame; removing a temporal mean from each frame to obtain a plurality of factored vibration motion functions; performing principal component analysis on the factored vibration motion functions to obtain principal components; blind source separating the principal components to compute a plurality of modal coordinates; computing frequency and damping ratios in accordance with the modal coordinates; and outputting the computed frequency and damping ratios.
