Improved high-voltage, high-frequency square-wave generator

This paper describes the design and operation of a prototype high-voltage full-floating high-frequency square-wave generator which is an improved version of the generator developed by Bernius and Chutjian (1989). The present design overcomes possible momentary simultaneous ON states in the MOSFET configuration and is less susceptible to deleterious effects caused by the component aging and replacements with nonidentical parts. The circuit performs well over a wide voltage and frequency range, until a limit is imposed by the operating characteristics of the active MOSFET elements. Circuit diagrams are presented.

Low-loss Si-based Dielectrics for High Frequency Components of Superconducting Detectors

Silicon-based dielectric is crucial for many superconducting devices, including high-frequency transmission lines, filters, and resonators. Defects and contaminants in the amorphous dielectric and at the interfaces between the dielectric and metal layers can cause microwave losses and degrade device performance. Optimization of the dielectric fabrication, device structure, and surface morphology can help mitigate this problem. We present the fabrication of silicon oxide and nitride thin film dielectrics. We then characterized them using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, and spectrophotometry techniques. The samples were synthesized using various deposition methods, including Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition and magnetron sputtering. The film's morphology and structure were modified by adjusting the deposition pressure and gas flow. The resulting films were used in superconducting resonant systems consisting of planar inductors and capacitors. Measurements of the resonator properties, including their quality factor, were performed.

Designing high frequency ac inductors using ferrite and Molypermalloy Powder Cores (MPP)

The major considerations in the design of high frequency ac inductors are reviewed. Two methods for designing the inductor: the area product method and the core geometry method, are presented. The two major effects of the inductor air gap, fringing flux power loss and increase of inductance, are discussed. Equations for the inductor design and a step-by-step design procedure are given. The use of a lumped air gap or a distributed air gap are discussed and a comparison of the losses resulting from these gaps, together with experimental results are presented.

Simultaneous ground-satellite observations of Pi 2 magnetic pulsations and their high frequency enhancement

Pi 2 magnetic pulsations are a frequent occurrence at the earth's surface and have been shown to be clearly correlated with substorm expansion onset. These pulsations are also observed in space at synchronous orbit at the same time as they are seen on the ground at the satellite conjugate point. This brief report describes three days in 1969 on which Pi 2 magnetic pulsations were simultaneously observed at the synchronous satellite ATS 1 and at Tungsten, N.W.T., Canada, near the foot of the ATS 1 magnetic field line. These Pi 2 bursts all exhibit the characteristic waveform and frequency, as well as an 0.3 Hz enhancement, at both locations. This high frequency enhancement appears to be an integral part of Pi 2 bursts both on the surface and at synchronous orbit and should be considered in the development of models of generation mechanisms.

Development of high reliability, high frequency power conditioning models of converter regulators

High efficiency conversion, regulation, and filtering techniques are discussed for power using high conversion frequencies; i.e., in the order of 1 to 5 MHz for converters having total output power capability in the order of 20 watts and 200 to 500 KHz for converters having total output powers in excess of 200 watts. Work centered on areas of component selection, material selection, optimization of the various types of circuits required, and the selection of materials for and design of magnetic components. These techniques were then applied to the design of two sample converters, one a medium power instrument type converter and the second a high power converter representative of a primary spacecraft converter regulator. The configuration and performance of the two converters is reported and discussed.

High frequency Hall current instability

The Hall current electrojet instability was studied to determine if it generates VLF hiss in the auroral zone of magnetic substorms. Using the kinetic equations with particle conserving Krook collision operator for electrons and ions, and Poisson's equation, it is shown that in the low frequency region, the range of frequency of unstable modes increases as the electron density increases, and that the high frequency component must be taken into account in calculations of turbulent saturation of the Hall current instability driven beyond threshold. It is concluded that Hall currents can generate waves in the VLF hiss frequency band which are related to local auroral electrojet activity.

Damping of high frequency waves in the solar wind

Cyclotron damping by suprathermal fluxes of protons and electrons in the interplanetary medium will greatly attenuate high frequency Alfven waves and whistler waves within distances 1 AU of the sun. Electrons with energies between 50 eV to 2 KeV are heated as a result of damping interplanetary whistler waves with frequencies 2 omega meson/2 pion 30 Hz in the frame of the solar wind. This heating may account, in part, for the observed suprathermal tail of solar wind electrons. Protons with energies approximately 50 KeV damp Alfven waves with frequencies .001 omega meson/2 pion .01 Hz. This damping mechanism may explain several features of a scatter free solar electron events and high intensity, anisotropic solar proton streams.

A High-Frequency Planar Transformer with Medium-Voltage Isolation

This paper presents the design of a low-loss, high-frequency planar transformer having medium-voltage (10’s of kV) isolation capability while transformer primary and secondary windings are interleaved to reduce losses. Medium-voltage isolation between adjacent printed circuit board (PCB) layers is extremely challenging using traditional PCB dielectrics. The isolation requirement is met using PCB with 7 kV/mil polyimide (Panasonic Felios RF775) as the dielectric, and by an appropriate layout of the windings and the inter-winding vias. The transformer is used to implement a dual active bridge (DAB) converter in a stackable dc-ac architecture where the dc port is connected to a photovoltaic (PV) string and ac outputs are connected in series to achieve direct PV string-to-medium voltage conversion without the need for low-voltage collection or a bulky line frequency transformer. Since each DAB transformer processes time-varying power, a design methodology is developed to minimize line-cycle-averaged losses. Experimental results are presented for a 1:1 planar transformer in a 7.5 kW SiC-based dc-to-ac module operating at 200 kHz. Isolation of 26 kV between the primary and secondary layers and between the windings and the core is verified using a hipot tester.

Investigation of potential driver modules and transmission lines for a high frequency power system on the space station

The feasibility of using Series Resonant Inverter as the driver module for high frequency power system on the Space Station was assessed. The performance of the Series Resonant Inverter that was used in the testing of the single-phase, 2.0-kw resonant AC power system breadboard is summarized. The architecture is descirbed and the driver modules of the 5.0 kw AC power system breadboard are analyzed. An investigation of the various types of transmission lines is continued. Measurements of equivalent series resistor and inductor and equivalent parallel capacitors are presented. In particular, a simplified approach is utilized to describe the optimal transmission line.

Microstructure and crystallographic texture of high frequency electric resistance welded X65 pipeline steel

Here, microstructure and crystallographic texture and their correlation with impact toughness of high-frequency electric resistance welded (HF-ERW) X65 Grade pipeline steel have been investigated. X65 base metal after HF-ERW has formed a typical hourglass-shaped weld joint with four different regions, including the thermomechanical-affected zone (TMAZ), fine-grained heat affected zone (FGHAZ), coarse-grained heat affected zone (CGHAZ), and bondline (Weld Zone). X65 base metal shows prominent (113) [110] and (112) [110] texture components due to thermomechanical-controlled processing. TMAZ depicted random texture with a minor intensity of Cube component (001)[110] due to the partial recrystallization during welding. In the FGHAZ and CGHAZ, near the bondline, the base metal texture has been converted to rotated Goss (110) [110], Goss (110) [001], and rotated cube (001) [110] due to the recrystallization of the austenite and the shear deformation in the austenite temperature range. A high density of {100} and {110} cleavage planes is observed in the CGHAZ, which is often found to be the fracture location for the impact toughness testing.

High-frequency gravitational wave detection by the BREAD experiment

The use of experiments searching for light axion dark matter as high-frequency gravitational wave detectors has garnered increasing attention in recent years. We explore the capabilities of the Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD) in probing the GW parameter space and study the directional dependence of its coverage. This detector can investigate frequencies ranging from 0.05 to 200 THz. We find that by employing single photon detectors, BREAD is sensitive to GWs with characteristic strains as low as 10 −21 at 0.1 THz and 10 −25 at 200 THz with a year exposure time, making it competitive with other proposals operating at similar frequencies.

The study of high-frequency pick-ups for electron beam position measurements in the AWAKE common beamline

The common beamline of the AWAKE experiment at CERN involves the co-propagation of two particle beams: protons with 48 nC bunch charge and 250 ps bunch length, and electrons with up to 600 pC bunch charge and approximately 4 ps bunch length. The existing operational beam position monitors at AWAKE cannot measure the electron bunches whilst the more-intense proton bunches are present, due to their low operating frequency. In order to try to address this challenge, two different types of high-frequency pick-ups were studied, a conical-shaped button pick-up and a Cherenkov diffraction radiation-based pick-up designed to operate at around 30 GHz. Both devices were installed at AWAKE and were connected to two identical read-out systems designed by TRIUMF. This contribution presents and discusses the results obtained from beam-based measurements during the current experimental year.

Experiment Do14: Ultrahigh and very high frequency polarization

The measurement of inhomogeneities in the electron content along the orbital paths of Gemini 8 and Gemini 9 missions was not accomplished because the tracking information was not available. The use of ultrahigh frequency radio transmission was the primary factor in the successful removal of a very high frequency Faraday rotation ambiguity; but, as was expected, this was not very useful for fine-scale polarization studies. Ionosonde data were useful in the computation of the slab thickness at the closest point of approach of the spacecraft.
