Proceedings of the Workshop on Identification and Control of Flexible Space Structures, volume 1

Identification and control of flexible space structures were studied. Exploration of the most advanced modeling estimation, identification and control methodologies to flexible space structures was discussed. The following general areas were discussed: space platforms, antennas, and flight experiments; control/structure interactions - modeling, integrated design and optimization, control and stabilization, and shape control; control technology; control of space stations; large antenna control, dynamics and control experiments, and control/structure interaction experiments.

Proceedings of the Workshop on Identification and Control of Flexible Space Structures, Volume 2

The results of a workshop on identification and control of flexible space structures held in San Diego, CA, July 4 to 6, 1984 are discussed. The main objectives of the workshop were to provide a forum to exchange ideas in exploring the most advanced modeling, estimation, identification and control methodologies to flexible space structures. The workshop responded to the rapidly growing interest within NASA in large space systems (space station, platforms, antennas, flight experiments) currently under design. Dynamic structural analysis, control theory, structural vibration and stability, and distributed parameter systems are discussed.

Proceedings of the Workshop on Identification and Control of Flexible Space Structures, Volume 3

The results of a workshop on identification and control of flexible space structures are reported. This volume deals mainly with control theory and methodologies as they apply to space stations and large antennas. Integration and dynamics and control experimental findings are reported. Among the areas of control theory discussed were feedback, optimization, and parameter identification.

Optimal Sensor Locations for Structural Identification

The optimum sensor location problem, OSLP, may be thought of in terms of the set of systems, S, the class of input time functions, I, and the identification algorithm (estimator) used, E. Thus, for a given time history of input, the technique of determining the OSL requires, in general, the solution of the optimization and the identification problems simultaneously. A technique which uncouples the two problems is introduced. This is done by means of the concept of an efficient estimator for which the covariance of the parameter estimates is inversely proportional to the Fisher Information Matrix.

Experimental Verification of Identification Algorithms for Control of Flexible Structures

An on going simple laboratory experiment, referred to as the Beam Control Experiment (BCE) is described which has the essential features of a large flexible structure. The experiment is used to develop and evaluate identification and control algorithms which lock promising in the active control of high performance large space structures. Some results on the maximum likelihood identification of the parameters of the beam actuator sensor assembly from experimental data is presented.

An Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) for modal parameter identification and model reduction

A method, called the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), is developed for modal parameter identification and model reduction of dynamic systems from test data. A new approach is introduced in conjunction with the singular value decomposition technique to derive the basic formulation of minimum order realization which is an extended version of the Ho-Kalman algorithm. The basic formulation is then transformed into modal space for modal parameter identification. Two accuracy indicators are developed to quantitatively identify the system modes and noise modes. For illustration of the algorithm, examples are shown using simulation data and experimental data for a rectangular grid structure.

New identifications of Fe XVII spectral lines in solar flares

The identifications of Fe XVII transitions between the 2s(2)2p(5)3s, 3p, and 3d configurations published by Jupen (1984) are reviewed. The review is based on examining spectroheliograms of solar flares obtained by a Naval Research Laboratory instrument on Skylab (S082-A). Agreement is obtained with the majority of identifications given by Jupen, but different wavelengths are found for a few of the lines. The relative intensities of the lines are qualitatively in agreement with calculations. A broad line at 1153.20 A is identified with the 2p(5)3s(3)P(0)-2p(5)3s(3)P1 forbidden transition of Fe XVII. This line was found in flare spectra obtained by the NRL slit spectrograph on Skylab (S082-B).

A fast approach to identification using deconvolution

In this paper, we propose a fast approach to impulse response and noise-variance identification for a finite-order, linear, time-invariant, single-input/single-output system, whose input driving noise is white (stationary or nonstationary) and measurement noise is stationary, white and Gaussian. Our algorithm is an iterative block component method that includes two stages, deconvolution and prediction-error identification. Experiences with our method indicate that it works well and saves about an order of magnitude in computation. Analyses and examples are given in this paper to support this claim.

Identification of pilot dynamics from in-flight tracking data

Data from a representative flight task involving an F-14 'pursuer' aircraft tracking a T-38 'target' aircraft in a 3G wind-up turn and in level flight are processed using a least squares identification technique in an attempt to identify pilot/vehicle dynamics. Comparative identification results are provided by a Fourier coefficient method which requires a carefully designed and implemented input consisting of a sum of sinusoids. The least-squares results compare favorably with those obtained by the Fourier technique. An example of crossover frequency regression is discussed in the light of the conditions of one of the flight configurations.

Identification of the dynamics of a two-dimensional grid structure using least square lattice filters

It is doubtful whether the dynamics of large space structures (LSS) can be predicted well enough for control system design applications. Hence, dynamic modeling from on-orbit measurements followed by a modification of the control system is of interest, taking into account the utilization of adaptive control concepts. The present paper is concerned with the model determination phase of the adaptive control problem. Using spectral decoupling to determine mode shapes, mode frequency and damping data can be obtained with the aid of an equation error parameter identification method. This method employs a second-order auto-regressive moving average (ARMA) model to represent the natural mode amplitudes. The discussed procedure involves an extension of the application of the least square lattice filter in system identification to a nonintegral, two-dimensional grid structure made of overlapping bars.

Thermoluminescence of Antarctic meteorites: A rapid screening technique for terrestrial age estimation, pairing studies and identification of specimens with unusual prefall histories

Thermoluminescence (TL) is a promising technique for rapid screening of the large numbers of Antarctic meteorites, permitting identification of interesting specimens that can then be studied in detail by other, more definite techniques. Specifically, TL permits determination of rough terrestrial age, identification of potential paired groups and location of specimens with unusual pre-fall histories. Meteorites with long terrestrial ages are particularly valuable for studying transport and weathering mechanisms. Pairing studies are possible because TL variations among meteorites are large compared to variations within individual objects, especially for natural TL. Available TL data for several L3 fragments, three of which were paired by other techniques, are presented as an example of the use of TL parameters in pairing studies. Additional TL measurements, specifically a blind test, are recommended to satisfactorily establish the reliability of this pairing property. The TL measurements also identify fragments with unusual pre-fall histories, such an near-Sun orbits.

In-flight identification of the Galileo spacecraft flexible mode characteristics

The scan platform of the Galialan spacecraft is attached to a flexible stator structure that separates the actuator from the platform-mounted inartial sensor. A scheme to identify the flexible mode characteristics (frequency, damping, and modal coefficient) of the stator using flight data is presentevd. A frequency domain analysis approach is taken and the identified mode characteristics will be used for updating the scan platform controler parameters. The influence of structural flexibility to th s can controller design is explained and the constraints in experting the identification procedure in flight are discused. Computer simulation results of the identification scheme are presented. The scheme in further verified by DISCOS simulations, in conjunction witha full spacecraft dynamics model and the scan platform controllers.

Efficient identification of critical stresses in structures subject to dynamic loads

Optimum structural design problems generally employ constraints which are parametric in terms of space and time variables. A parametric constraint may be replaced by equivalent critical point constraints at its local minima for optimization applications. In complex structures, accurate identification of such critical points is computationally expensive due to the cost of finite element analyses. Three techniques are described for efficiently and accurately identifying critical points for space- and time-dependent parametric constraints. An adaptive search technique and a spline interpolation technique are developed for exactly known response. A least squares spline approximation is suggested for noisy behavior. A helicopter tail-boom structure subjected to transient loading is used as an example to demonstrate the techniques described. All three techniques are shown to be computationally efficient for critical point identification and the least squares approximation also removes noise from the data. The case of multiple constraints per element is shown to be particularly suited to the use of spline techniques.

Remote sensing techniques for the detection of soil erosion and the identification of soil conservation practices

The following paper is a summary of a number of techniques initiated under the AgRISTARS (Agriculture and Resources Inventory Surveys Through Aerospace Remote Sensing) project for the detection of soil degradation caused by water erosion and the identification of soil conservation practices for resource inventories. Discussed are methods to utilize a geographic information system to determine potential soil erosion through a USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) model; application of the Kauth-Thomas Transform to detect present erosional status; and the identification of conservation practices through visual interpretation and a variety of enhancement procedures applied to digital remotely sensed data.

Identification of nonlinear system parameters in joints using the force-state mapping technique

A procedure is presented for identifying the potentially strong nonlinear properties of structural members, such as joints, by expressing the force transmitted by the member as a function of its mechanical state. By explicitly including position and rate dependent effects, the surface of transmitted force versus state, the force-state map, has distinct, unique, superposable features for common structural nonlinearities, even those which appear to indicate hysteresis on a force-stroke presentation. An analysis is performed on the influence of true memory effects, transient response, and uncertainty in the measurements and system mass on the precision of the procedure. The successful identification of simulated data verifies the accuracy of the identification algorithm. Tests are then conducted on three actual joint models, with incomplete state measurements typical of an actual testing environment. The ability of the procedure to estimate the complete state vector and to analyze and reconstruct the measured nonlinear characteristics is demonstrated.

Nonlinear sensitivity coefficients and corrections in system identification

The evaluation of sensitivity coefficients which are the changes in the eigencharacteristics with respect to changes in the structural parameters is important in the identification of structural systems. In such studies the commonly used linearized sensitivity coefficients for system identification have occasionally resulted in poor convergence or even divergence during the iteration process to update analytical models for better correlation with the test data. Nonlinear sensitivity coefficients and nonlinear correction terms, usually eliminated during the linearization process, have been developed to evaluate sensitivity coefficients of linear systems. Application to computer simulated example problems indicates a more rapid and stable convergence of the iteration processes to update the analytical model for the improvement of the correlation with test data. The successful application of combining the nonlinear sensitivity coefficients and nonlinear correction terms with the Multiple Boundary Condition Tests enhances the ability to validate large space structures by ground tests.

Structural parameter identification of distributed systems using finite element approximation

A system identification technique is developed for classes of distributed systems using finite element approximations. Vibrating systems represented by partial differential equations have physical parameters associated with mass, stiffness, and damping distributions which need to be known in order to properly control and design mathematical models of the system. In order to identify these parameters a weighted least-squares algorithm and modified Newton-Raphson method is used for the identification process. The theory and technique is demonstrated by estimating the system parameters of a vibrating cantilever beam made up of several different structural properties.
