Multi-Spectroscopic Determination of Exchange Coupling, Zero-Field Splitting, and g-Matrices in Radical-Bridged Dinuclear Fe(III) Complexes

When the energy gap, Δ, between the lowest-lying spin manifolds within a spin-exchange coupled molecule approaches Δ/k B ≈ 300 K, the traditional temperature-dependence (T < 400 K) of the molar magnetic susceptibility is not always a reliable way to obtain a good estimate of intramolecular exchange couplings. We develop a spectroscopic approach capable of accurately parametrizing complex magnetic Hamiltonians by exploiting the separation of the anisotropy and exchange energy scales in strongly coupled magnetic molecules. Specifically, we combine inelastic neutron scattering, high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance, far-infrared magneto-spectroscopy and magnetometry, and obtain detailed information about the magnetic properties of a series of diiron complexes derived from [[Fe(cth)] 2 (dxbq)] 3+ (H 2 dxbq: 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (x = h) or 3,6-dichloro-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (x = c), cth: 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane). Well-isolated S = 9/2 ground states emerge due to strong direct antiferromagnetic exchange between the Fe 3+ centers (S = 5/2) and the radical bridging benzoquinone ligand (S = 1/2). The specific sensitivities and transition selection rules of the applied methods allow us to determine the parameters of the microscopic Hamiltonian including exchange coupling, fourth-order Stevens operators and g-factors. Our methodology is directly portable to other strongly coupled molecular compounds.

Cloud-based Testbed for Adaptive Under-Frequency Load Shedding with High DER Penetration

Increasing penetration of distributed energy resources and behind-the-meter renewables may soon disrupt the efficacy of critical protection schemes, such as under-frequency load shedding (UFLS). Improved data exchange and coordination across the transmission-distribution boundary will be required to maintain reliability of bulk electric system. Standards-based data integration platforms using agreed-upon semantic vocabularies, such as the Common Information Model, will be key to enabling adaptive protection schemes requiring synthesized data from both the bulk power system and behind-the-meter resources. This paper introduces a cloud-based open-source data integration environment and UFLS clustering algorithm being developed to enable adaptive relay coordination between transmission and distribution utilities in the state of Vermont.

A finite difference informed random walker (FDiRW) solver for strongly inhomogeneous diffusion problems

In nature, many complex multi-physics coupling problems exhibit strong diffusivity inhomogeneity. For instance, in the context of radionuclide absorption by porous wasteform materials within a flowing waste stream, the difference of species’ diffusivity in solid and liquid phases spans by 3~8 orders of magnitude. To solve the diffusion equations with strongly inhomogeneous diffusivity, traditional discretization-based methods, such as the Finite Difference Method (FDM), require infinitesimally small time steps (<10 -10 ) as high spatial resolutions are employed in most microstructure evolution processes, leading to prohibitively high computational costs. Here, this work developed an integrated numerical approach (FDiRW: Finite Difference informed Random Walk) to tackle this challenge. The idea is that utilizing the Random Walk concept, the fast diffusion is modeled as a superposition of point source’s solution for a concentration distribution while FDM is used to obtain the point source’s solution at each node. A mesh-coarsening algorithm is developed to generate an exclusive coarse mesh for FDiRW approach to maximize its efficiency. The effectiveness of the coarse mesh-based FDiRW approach is validated by benchmarking Finite Difference solutions. Numerical results demonstrated that FDiRW achieves a remarkable 1000x computational efficiency improvement over FDM while preserving desired accuracy for a medium-sized model of 192 × 192 × 192 grids. Finally, as models scale up, a floating-point operations (PLOPs) analysis of the FDiRW algorithm reveals that its computational complexity grows quadratically in terms of the number of nodes employed in computation.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering off the neutron

The three-dimensional structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) is embedded in so-called generalized parton distributions, which are accessible from deeply virtual Compton scattering. In this process, a high-energy electron is scattered off a nucleon by exchanging a virtual photon. Then, a highly energetic real photon is emitted from one of the quarks inside the nucleon, which carries information on the quark's transverse position and longitudinal momentum. By measuring the cross-section of deeply virtual Compton scattering, Compton form factors related to the generalized parton distributions can be extracted. Here, we report the observation of unpolarized deeply virtual Compton scattering off a deuterium target. From the measured photon-electroproduction cross-sections, we have extracted the cross-section of a quasifree neutron and a coherent deuteron. Due to the approximate isospin symmetry of quantum chromodynamics, we can determine the contributions from the different quark flavours to the helicity-conserved Compton form factors by combining our measurements with previous ones probing the proton's internal structure. These results advance our understanding of the description of the nucleon structure, which is important to solve the proton spin puzzle. The internal structure of the neutron has now been probed by highly energetic photons scattering off it. Combined with previous results for protons, these measurements reveal the contributions of quark flavours to the nucleon structure.

Precise interpretations of traditional fine-tuning measures

We uncover two precise interpretations of traditional electroweak fine-tuning (FT) measures that were historically missed. (i) a statistical interpretation : the traditional FT measure shows the change in plausibility of a model in which a parameter was exchanged for the 𝑍 boson mass relative to an untuned model in light of the 𝑍 boson mass measurement. (ii) an information-theoretic interpretation : the traditional FT measure shows the exponential of the extra information, measured in nats, relative to an untuned model that you must supply about a parameter in order to fit the 𝑍 mass. We derive the mathematical results underlying these interpretations, and explain them using examples from weak scale supersymmetry. These new interpretations allow us to rigorously define FT in particle physics and beyond, shed fresh light on the status of extensions to the Standard Model and, lastly, allow us to precisely reinterpret historical and recent studies using traditional FT measures.

Mechanistic Understanding of Silver Sorbent Aging Processes in Off-Gas Treatment

The effect of aging in various off-gas streams including dry air, humid air, 1% NO/N 2 , 2% NO 2 /air, and a gas mixture consisting of 99.25% humid air (dew point: -15 °C), 0.25% NO/N 2 , and 0.5% NO 2 /air in terms of concentration on reduced silver exchanged mordenite (Ag 0 Z) and silver functionalized silica aerogel (Ag 0 -aerogel) were studied in this project. Utilizing simple and sophisticated experimental information combined with molecular and macroscopic mechanistic modeling, this project has significantly advanced the current understanding of aging for silver bearing adsorbents in nuclear-fuel-reprocessing off-gas streams. In addition, this project has produced models that can be utilized to predict the influence of adsorbent aging on the uptake kinetics and capacity of aged adsorbents for iodine and iodine-containing organic compounds. The results of the study have been published in the open literature, and can be used to help DOE better predict the removal of radioactive gases from nuclear-fuel-reprocessing off-gas streams.
