Title NWTC Site 3.2 - NREL ASSIST (SN11) / Thermodynamic retrievals TROPoe

This dataset contains daily files with thermodynamic profiles retrieved with the optimal estimation physical retrieval TROPoe v0.12 (Turner and Löhnert 2014; Turner and Blumberg 2019; Turner and Löhnert 2021). The profiles are retrieved every 10 minutes from instantaneous observations from the NREL ASSIST-II (SN 11) infrared spectrometer. Observations are noise-filtered but not averaged in time to minimize errors due to non-uniform clouds. Additional input data in TROPoe are cloud base height from a Vaisala CL51 ceilometer. The full pipeline for running the retrieval is available at https://github.com/StefanoWind/TROPoe_processor. Met data were not ingested. In addition to these temporally resolved input data, TROPoe requires an a priori dataset (prior) that provides mean climatological estimates of thermodynamic profiles and specifies how temperature and humidity covary with height as an input (for details see, e.g., Djalalova et al. 2022). The prior is a key component of the retrieval and provides a constraint on the ill-posed inversion problem. A monthly prior was computed from operational radiosonde launches at Denver, CO.

Additional input data in TROPoe are cloud base height (CBH), which is a combined data product that uses data from ceilometers at sites A1 and H and scanning lidars from ARM sites C1 and E37. The CBH is weighted inversely proportionally to the distance to the respective site to take into account the spatial variability of clouds (see https://github.com/StefanoWind/ASSIST_analysis/blob/main/awaken_processing/combine_cbh.py). The full pipeline for running the retrieval is available at https://github.com/StefanoWind/TROPoe_processor. Met data was not ingested. A monthly prior was computed from operational radiosonde launches at ARM SGP, OK.

Joint Modeling of Quasar Variability and Accretion Disk Reprocessing Using Latent Stochastic Differential Equations

Quasars are bright active galactic nuclei powered by the accretion of matter around supermassive black holes at the center of galaxies. Their stochastic brightness variability depends on the physical properties of the accretion disk and black hole. The upcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) is expected to observe tens of millions of quasars, so there is a need for efficient techniques like machine learning that can handle the large volume of data. Quasar variability is believed to be driven by an X-ray corona, which is reprocessed by the accretion disk and emitted as UV/optical variability. We are the first to introduce an auto-differentiable simulation of the accretion disk and reprocessing. We use the simulation as a direct component of our neural network to jointly model the driving variability and reprocessing, trained with supervised learning on simulated LSST-like 10 yr quasar light curves. We encode the light curves using a transformer encoder, and the driving variability is reconstructed using latent stochastic differential equations, a physically motivated generative deep learning method that can model continuous-time stochastic dynamics. By embedding the physical processes of the driving signal and reprocessing into our network, we achieve a model that is more robust and interpretable. We demonstrate that our model outperforms a Gaussian process regression baseline and can infer accretion disk parameters and time delays between wave bands, even for out-of-distribution driving signals. Our approach provides a powerful framework that can be adapted to solve other inverse problems in multivariate time series.

Vertical resolution of temperature profiles obtained from remote radiation measurements

The Backus-Gilbert theory, originally developed for analysis of inversion problems associated with the physics of the solid earth, was applied to the problem of the vertical sounding of the atmosphere by means of remote radiation measurements. An application was made to spectral intervals 2.8/cm wide in the 667/cm band CO2, and tradeoff curves are presented which quantitatively define the relationship between intrinsic vertical resolution and random error in temperature profile estimates. It is found that for a 1-2 K random error with state-of-the-art instrumentation, the intrinsic vertical resolution ranges from approximately 0.5 locale scale height (l.s.h.) in the lower troposphere to greater than 2 l.s.h. in the upper stratosphere with approximately 1 l.s.h. resolution in the vicinity of the tropopause. These values are somewhat smaller than the widths of the radioactive transfer kernels at similar levels. Increasing the number of spectral intervals from 7 to 16 is found to produce only a marginal improvement in vertical resolution.

Backus-Gilbert inversion of travel time data

Application of the Backus-Gilbert theory for geophysical inverse problems to the seismic body wave travel-time problem is described. In particular, it is shown how to generate earth models that fit travel-time data to within one standard error and having generated such models how to describe their degree of uniqueness. An example is given to illustrate the process.
