Novel Photon-Counting Detectors for Free-Space Communication

We present performance data for novel photon counting detectors for free space optical communication. NASA GSFC is testing the performance of three novel photon counting detectors 1) a 2x8 mercury cadmium telluride avalanche array made by DRS Inc. 2) a commercial 2880 silicon avalanche photodiode array and 3) a prototype resonant cavity silicon avalanche photodiode array. We will present and compare dark count, photon detection efficiency, wavelength response and communication performance data for these detectors. We discuss system wavelength trades and architectures for optimizing overall communication link sensitivity, data rate and cost performance. The HgCdTe APD array has photon detection efficiencies of greater than 50 were routinely demonstrated across 5 arrays, with one array reaching a maximum PDE of 70. High resolution pixel-surface spot scans were performed and the junction diameters of the diodes were measured. The junction diameter was decreased from 31 m to 25 m resulting in a 2x increase in e-APD gain from 470 on the 2010 array to 1100 on the array delivered to NASA GSFC. Mean single photon SNRs of over 12 were demonstrated at excess noise factors of 1.2-1.3.The commercial silicon APD array has a fast output with rise times of 300ps and pulse widths of 600ps. Received and filtered signals from the entire array are multiplexed onto this single fast output. The prototype resonant cavity silicon APD array is being developed for use at 1 micron wavelength.

Synthesis of Zwitterionic CsPbBr 3 Nanocrystals with Controlled Anisotropy using Surface‐Selective Ligand Pairs

Abstract Mechanistic studies of the morphology of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP‐NCs) are hampered by a lack of generalizable suitable synthetic strategies and ligand systems. Here, the synthesis of zwitterionic CsPbBr 3 NCs is presented with controlled anisotropy using a proposed “surface‐selective ligand pairs” strategy. Such a strategy provides a platform to systematically study the binding affinity of capping ligand pairs and the resulting LHP morphologies. By using zwitterionic ligands (ZwL) with varying structures, majority ZwL‐capped LHP NCs with controlled morphology are obtained, including anisotropic nanoplatelets and nanorods, for the first time. Combining experiments with density functional theory calculations, factors that govern the ligand binding on the different surface facets of LHP‐NCs are revealed, including the steric bulkiness of the ligand, the number of binding sites, and the charge distance between binding moieties. This study provides guidance for the further exploration of anisotropic LHP‐NCs.

Long non-coding RNA, Bmcob, regulates osteoblastic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells

Disordered osteoblastic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) contributes to bone loss. The underlying mechanisms are complicated and not fully understood. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as an important regulatory factors on bone metabolism. Here, we discovered a novel lncRNA, Bmcob, which modulated osteogenic differentiation of primary mouse BMSCs. Expression levels of Bmcob were significantly upregulated in early-to-mid stages during osteoblast differentiation. Silencing of Bmcob suppressed osteoblastic differentiation of BMSCs in vitro, whereas its overexpression protected BMSCs from oxidative stress induced inhibition on osteogenesis. Subsequently, we discovered that selenoprotein P (Sepp1), which is located next to the Bmcob gene, was partly responsible for the regulatory effects of Bmcob. In addition, a series of selenoproteins were downregulated in BMSCs with Bmcob knockdown. Mechanistically, we found Bmcob was associated with selenocysteine insertion sequence binding protein 2 (SBP2), a critical trans-acting factor for selenoprotein synthesis. Finally, we suggest an explanatory hypothesis that through modulating nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of SBP2, Bmcob regulates a number of selenoproteins expression, including sepp1, and then mediates osteogenesis of BMSCs. Taken together, our results revealed a novel mechanism regulating osteogenesis of BMSCs and may function as a potential target for treating osteoporosis.

A novel stress-induced martensitic transformation in a single-phase refractory high-entropy alloy

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) provide a new perspective to design metastable alloys with the stress-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) for overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off. Here, we report a novel SIMT, orthorhombic to hexagonal close-packed martensite, in a single orthorhombic refractory HEA (Ti 16 Zr 35 Hf 35 Ta 14 RHEA), showing a good yield strength-ductility matching. The analysis of the elastic distortion energy (ΔE els ) of Ti 16 Zr 35 Hf 35 Ta 14 and several other RHEAs reveals that severe lattice distortion is a key factor which causes this SIMT. Combined the “d-electron alloy design” approach with the ΔE els , the phase configuration and SIMT path in RHEAs can be well predicted. Our work brings new insights between the lattice distortion and SIMT of RHEAs, benefiting the metastable alloy development.

Seasonal variations in fire conditions are important drivers in the trend of aerosol optical properties over the south-eastern Atlantic

Abstract. From June to October, southern Africa produces one-third of the global biomass burning (BB) emissions by widespread fires. BB aerosols are transported westward over the south-eastern Atlantic with the mid-tropospheric winds, resulting in significant radiative effects. Ascension Island (ASI) is located midway between Africa and South America. From June 2016 to October 2017, a 17-month in situ observation campaign on ASI found a low single-scattering albedo (SSA) as well as a high mass absorption cross-section of black carbon (MACBC), demonstrating the strong absorbing marine boundary layer in the south-eastern Atlantic. Here we investigate the monthly variations of critical optical properties of BB aerosols, i.e. SSA and MACBC, during the BB seasons and the driving factors behind these variations. Both SSA and MACBC increase from June to August and decrease in September and October. The average SSA during the BB seasons is 0.81 at 529 nm wavelength, with the highest mean ∼ 0.85 in October and the lowest ∼ 0.78 in August. The absorption enhancement (Eabs) derived from the MACBC shows similar trends with SSA, with the average during the whole of the BB seasons at ∼ 1.96 and ∼ 2.07 in 2016 and 2017, respectively. As the Eabs is higher than the ∼ 1.5 commonly adopted value by climate models, this result suggests the marine boundary layer in the south-eastern Atlantic is more absorbing than model simulations. We find the enhanced ratio of BC to CO (ΔBC/ΔCO, equal to BC/ΔCO as the BC background concentration is considered to be 0) is well correlated with SSA and MACBC, providing a simple way to estimate the aerosol optical characteristics in the south-eastern Atlantic. The exponential function we proposed can approximate SSA and MACBC with BC/ΔCO, and when BC/ΔCO is small it can capture the rapid growth of SSA as BC/ΔCO decreases. BC/ΔCO is influenced by combustion conditions and aerosol scavenging. From the analysis of the location of BB, the primary source fuel, the water content in the fuel, combined with the mean cloud cover and precipitation in the transport areas of the BB plume, we conclude that the increase in BC/ΔCO from June to August is likely to be caused by burning becoming more flaming. The reduction in the water content of fuels may be responsible for the change in the burning conditions from June to August. The decrease in BC/ΔCO in September and October may be caused by two factors, one being a lower proportion of flaming conditions, possibly associated with a decrease in mean surface wind speed in the burning area, and the other being an increase in precipitation in the BB transport pathway, leading to enhanced aerosol scavenging, which ultimately results in an increase in SSA and MACBC.

Multi-element metasurface system for imaging in the near-infrared

Metasurfaces are optically thin 2D arrays of subwavelength scatterers that modify scalar and vector properties of incident electromagnetic fields. Metasurface lenses are of particular interest for imaging applications for their flat form factor, compatibility with CMOS fabrication processes, and potential for correcting aberrations with a small number of elements. Here, we advance this capability by realizing a millimeter-diameter, polarization-independent metalens triplet system with chromatic aberration correction over the wavelength range of 1.30–1.60 μm and monochromatic aberration correction enabling a field of view of 50°.

Chelating Borohydrides for Lanthanides and Actinides: Structures, Mechanochemistry, and Case Studies with Phosphinodiboranates

In this Forum Article, we review the development of chelating borohydride ligands called aminodiboranates (H 3 BNR 2 BH 3 – ) and phosphinodiboranates (H 3 BPR 2 BH 3 – ) for the synthesis of trivalent f-element complexes. The advantages and history of using mechanochemistry to prepare molecular borohydride complexes are described along with new results demonstrating the mechanochemical synthesis of M 2 (H 3 BP t Bu 2 BH 3 ) 6 , where M = U, Nd, Tb, Er, and Lu (1–5). Multinuclear NMR, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction data are reported for 1–5 alongside complementary density functional theory calculations to reveal differences in their structure and reactivity with and without tetrahydrofuran. The results demonstrate how mechanochemistry can be used to access f-element complexes with chelating borohydrides in improved and reproducible yields, which is an important step toward investigating the properties of lanthanide and actinide phosphinodiboranate complexes with different phosphorus substituents. Furthermore, the relevance of these results is contextualized by a discussion of structural factors known to influence the volatility of f-element borohydrides and applications that require the development of volatile f-element complexes.

Hard-scattering approach to strongly hindered electric dipole transitions between heavy quarkonia

The conventional wisdom in dealing with electromagnetic transition between heavy quarkonia is the multipole expansion, when the emitted photon has a typical energy of order quarkonium binding energy. Nevertheless, in the case when the energy carried by the photon is of order typical heavy quark momentum, the multipole expansion doctrine is expected to break down. In this work, we apply the “hard-scattering” approach originally developed to tackle the strongly hindered magnetic dipole ( M 1 ) transition [Y. Jia , ] to the strongly hindered electric dipole ( E 1 ) transition between heavy quarkonia. We derive the factorization formula for the strongly hindered E 1 transition rates at the lowest order in velocity and α s in the context of the nonrelativistic QCD, and conduct a detailed numerical comparison with the standard predictions for various bottomonia and charmonia E 1 transition processes. Estimating the Diffusion Coefficient of Lithium in Graphite: Extremely Fast Charging and a Comparison of Data Analysis Techniques

Galvanostatic intermittent titration experiments were performed in three-electrode cells to characterize the effect of C/2, 2-C and 4-C charge rates on the observed lithium diffusion coefficient. As part of the data analysis process, we compared the classic Weppner-Huggins analysis of polarization data with a newer (Wang et al.) analysis method for depolarization data. At low values of x in Li x C 6 , both analysis methods showed the same general trend in the apparent lithium diffusion coefficient, 4-C > 2-C > C/2. The two techniques differed in the magnitude of the estimated diffusion coefficient by about a factor of 100. The observed increase in diffusion coefficient does not last over a large compositional range. Since the estimates from the method of Weppner and Huggins may contain artifacts due to the use of particulate electrodes and high charge rates, the method of Wang et al. may produce better values.

A Causal Inference Model Based on Random Forests to Identify the Effect of Soil Moisture on Precipitation

Soil moisture influences precipitation mainly through its impact on land–atmosphere interactions. Understanding and correctly modeling soil moisture–precipitation (SM–P) coupling is crucial for improving weather forecasting and subseasonal to seasonal climate predictions, especially when predicting the persistence and magnitude of drought. However, the sign and spatial structure of SM–P feedback are still being debated in the climate research community, mainly due to the difficulty in establishing causal relationships and the high degree of nonlinearity in land–atmosphere processes. To this end, we developed a causal inference model based on the Granger causality analysis and a nonlinear machine learning model. This model includes three steps: nonlinear anomaly decomposition, nonlinear Granger causality analysis, and evaluation of the quality of SM–P feedback, which eliminates the nonlinear response of interannual and seasonal variability and the memory effects of climatic factors and isolates the causal relationship of local SM–P feedback. We applied this model by using National Climate Assessment–Land Data Assimilation System (NCA-LDAS) datasets over the United States. Here, the results highlight the importance of nonlinear atmosphere responses in land–atmosphere interactions. In addition, the strong feedback over the southwestern United States and the Great Plains both highlight the impacts of topographic factors rather than only the sensitivity of evapotranspiration to soil moisture. Furthermore, the SM–P index defined by our framework is used to benchmark Earth system models (ESMs), which provides a new metric for efficiently identifying potential model biases in modeling local land–atmosphere interactions and may help the development of ESMs in improving simulations of water cycle variability and extremes.

Dietary taurine supplementation improves breast meat quality in chronic heat‐stressed broilers via activating the Nrf2 pathway and protecting mitochondria from oxidative attack

ABSTRACT Background Chronic heat stress can induce oxidative impairment and decrease breast meat quality in broilers. Taurine is a β ‐amino acid with antioxidant properties. To investigate the alleviative effects and molecular mechanisms of taurine supplementation on breast meat quality in broilers exposed to chronic heat stress, 144 28‐day‐old chickens (Arbor Acres) were randomly distributed to thermoneutral (TN, 22 °C, basal diet), heat stress (HS, consistent 32 °C, basal diet), or heat stress plus taurine (HS + T, consistent 32 °C, basal diet + 5.00 g kg −1 taurine) groups for a 14‐day trial. Results Chronic heat stress did not affect the contents of moisture, crude protein and crude fat in breast muscle, but impaired breast meat quality in broilers. Taurine supplementation significantly alleviated the increase in lightness and drip loss and the decrease in pH 45 min and shear force of breast meat in chronic heat‐stressed broilers. Compared with the HS group, taurine supplementation significantly decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species and malonaldehyde and increased the messenger RNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2), NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 and heme oxygenase 1 in the HS + T group. Meanwhile, taurine supplementation effectively alleviated mitochondrial damage caused by chronic heat exposure. Conclusion Dietary taurine supplementation can effectively improve the quality of breast meat in chronic heat‐stressed broilers via activating the Nrf2 pathway and protecting mitochondria from oxidative attack. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

Predicting biomass comminution: Physical experiment, population balance model, and deep learning

An extended population balance model (PBM) and a deep learning-based enhanced deep neural operator (DNO+) model are introduced for predicting particle size distribution (PSD) of comminuted biomass through a large knife mill. Experimental tests using corn stalks with varied moisture contents, mill blade speeds, and discharge screen sizes are conducted to support model development. A novel mechanism in the extended PBM allows for including additional input parameters such as moisture content, which is not possible in the original PBM. The DNO+ model can include influencing factors of different data types such as moisture content and discharge screen size, which significantly extends the engineering applicability of the standard DNO model that only admits feed PSD and outcome PSD. Test results show that both models are remarkably accurate in the calibration or training parameter space and can be used as surrogate models to provide effective guidance for biomass preprocessing design.

Integration of Yeast Episomal/Integrative Plasmid Causes Genotypic and Phenotypic Diversity and Improved Sesquiterpene Production in Metabolically Engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The variability in phenotypic outcomes among biological replicates in engineered microbial factories presents a captivating mystery. Establishing the association between phenotypic variability and genetic drivers is important to solve this intricate puzzle. Here, we applied a previously developed auxin-inducible depletion of hexokinase 2 as a metabolic engineering strategy for improved nerolidol production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and biological replicates exhibit a dichotomy in nerolidol production of either 3.5 or 2.5 g L –1 nerolidol. Harnessing Oxford Nanopore’s long-read genomic sequencing, we reveal a potential genetic cause—the chromosome integration of a 2μ sequence-based yeast episomal plasmid, encoding the expression cassettes for nerolidol synthetic enzymes. This finding was reinforced through chromosome integration revalidation, engineering nerolidol and valencene production strains, and generating a diverse pool of yeast clones, each uniquely fingerprinted by gene copy numbers, plasmid integrations, other genomic rearrangements, protein expression levels, growth rate, and target product productivities. Τhe best clone in two strains produced 3.5 g L –1 nerolidol and ~0.96 g L –1 valencene. Comparable genotypic and phenotypic variations were also generated through the integration of a yeast integrative plasmid lacking 2μ sequences. Our work shows that multiple factors, including plasmid integration status, subchromosomal location, gene copy number, sesquiterpene synthase expression level, and genome rearrangement, together play a complicated determinant role on the productivities of sesquiterpene product. Integration of yeast episomal/integrative plasmids may be used as a versatile method for increasing the diversity and optimizing the efficiency of yeast cell factories, thereby uncovering metabolic control mechanisms.

Quantifying lithium loss in amorphous silicon thin-film anodes via titration-gas chromatography

Silicon with a high theoretical capacity (3,579 mAh/g) is a promising anode candidate for lithium-ion batteries. However, commercialization is still impeded by low Coulombic efficiency, caused by solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and trapped lithium (Li)-silicon (Si) alloy during repeated volume change. Quantifying capacity losses from each factor is crucial to formulate rational design strategies for further improvement. In this work, titration-gas chromatography and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy are applied to characterize the evolution of trapped Li-Si alloy and SEI growth in a silicon thin-film anode. It is found that continuous growth of the SEI is the dominant factor for lithium inventory loss during cycling, with only a marginal increase in trapped Li-Si alloy. This study offers a quantitative approach to differentiate Li in the SEI from trapped Li in Li-Si alloy through a silicon thin-film anode, providing unique insights into identifying critical bottlenecks for developing Si anodes.

Effect of the Molecular Configuration of Perylene Diimide Acceptors on Charge Transfer and Device Performance

Three perylene diimides (PDI)-based small molecules, T2-SePDI2, T3B-SePDI3, and T4B-SePDI4, with different molecular configurations are synthesized. Due to a large steric hindrance, the molecular configuration of T3B-SePDI3 is the most distorted, followed by T4BSePDI4, while T2-SePDI2 shows the smallest steric hindrance. Inverted bulk heterojunction solar cells based on T3B-SePDI3 and PBDB-T show the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.82% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.98 V, a high short-circuit current density of 10.52 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 56.31%. The PCEs of the T2-SePDI2- and T4B-SePDI4- based devices are 4.10% and 5.10%, respectively. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the molecular configuration of the PDI-based small molecule acceptor is critical and that increasing the steric hindrance is helpful in suppressing aggregation and improving device performance.

Deriving Scaling Factors Using a Global Hydrological Model to Restore GRACE Total Water Storage Changes for China's Yangtze River Basin

This study used a global hydrological model (GHM), PCR-GLOBWB, which simulates surface water storage changes, natural and human induced groundwater storage changes, and the interactions between surface water and subsurface water, to generate scaling factors by mimicking low-pass filtering of GRACE signals. Signal losses in GRACE data were subsequently restored by the scaling factors from PCR-GLOBWB. Results indicate greater spatial heterogeneity in scaling factor from PCR-GLOBWB and CLM4.0 than that from GLDAS-1 Noah due to comprehensive simulation of surface and subsurface water storage changes for PCR-GLOBWB and CLM4.0. Filtered GRACE total water storage (TWS) changes applied with PCR-GLOBWB scaling factors show closer agreement with water budget estimates of TWS changes than those with scaling factors from other land surface models (LSMs) in China's Yangtze River basin. Results of this study develop a further understanding of the behavior of scaling factors from different LSMs or GHMs over hydrologically complex basins, and could be valuable in providing more accurate TWS changes for hydrological applications (e.g., monitoring drought and groundwater storage depletion) over regions where human-induced interactions between surface water and subsurface water are intensive.
