The verification of parallel momentum conservation at a metal/semiconductor interface is a fundamental issue in interface transport. Ballistic-electron-microscopy (BEEM) is a recently developed method for probing interfaces with nanometer resolution. In this talk, BEEM spectroscopy on Au/Si(111) structures as a function of Au thickness and temperature will be described.
The Cassini spacecraft is scheduled for launch to Saturn in October of 1997. During portions of the mission, momentum wheels will be used for attitude control.
Global warming, by definition, changes the atmospheric temperature field. This temperature change is not expected to be uniform, either geographically, or with height in the atmosphere. By the thermal wind equation. changes in the pole-to-equator temperature gradient will cause changes in the atmospheric zonal winds. Numerous previous studies have shown that observed length-of-day (LOD) variations on time scales of a few days to a few years are largely caused by atmospheric zonal wind fluctuations. In particular, seasonal variations in LOD have been previously shown to be dominantly caused by seasonal variations in the atmospheric zonal winds. Here, observed changes in the strength of seasonal LOD and wind-driven atmospheric angular momentum signals during 1962 to 2000 are analyzed and shown to be significantly correlated with each other and with the Southern Oscillation Index.
This paper describes the process used for estimating flow-through balance momentum tares. The interaction of jet engine exhausts on the BOEINGERA Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) was simulated in the NFAC 40x80 wind tunnel at NASA Ames using a pair of turbine powered simulators (TPS). High-pressure air was passed through a flow-through balance and manifold before being delivered to the TPS units. The force and moment tares that result from the internal shear and pressure distribution were estimated using CFD. Validation of the CFD simulations for these complex internal flows is a challenge, given limited experimental data due to the complications of the internal geometry. Two CFD validation efforts are documented, and comparisons with experimental data from the final model installation are provided.
Fluctuations in stmospheric angular momentum (AAM) are examined in a three-year simulation of the perpetual-January climate, performed with of a version of the UCLA general circulation model which contains no tropical, Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO).
GOES-16 was launched in 2016 using GPS at GEO, a first for civil space. With the subsequent launch of GOES-17 in 2018, followed by GOES-18 in 2022, we have accumulated over a decade of error free GPS navigation experience at GEO. Confident in GPS performance at GEO, the next generation/NASA geosynchronous weather satellite program GeoXO will require the spacecraft flight software to automate station keeping and momentum management maneuver planning and execution. Coupled with low thrust propulsion, it gives us assurance that on-board maneuver planning and execution can be implemented at a very low risk, allowing instruments to operate through maneuvers while maintaining a more accurate orbital slot and reducing operational costs. In this paper, we discuss how GOES-R maneuver planning is currently performed on the ground and contrast this with our vision of how it might be automated on-board.
