Multiplet effects on the L(2,3) fluorescence yield of multiply ionized Ar

The 2p fluorescence yield of argon in the presence of 0 to 6 3p holes was calculated by statistically averaging the fluorescence yields of initial state that consist of individual multiplet configurations. These configurations were formed by coupling the 2p vacancy to the partially filled 3p shell. Results agree reasonably well with experimental fluorescence yields deduced from ion-atom collision measurements.

Multiplet effects on the L/sub 2,3/ fluorescence yield of multiply ionized Ar

The 2p fluorescence yield of Ar in the presence of zero to six 3p holes has been calculated by statistically averaging the fluorescence yields of initial states that consist of individual multiplet configurations, formed by coupling the 2p vacancy to the partially filled 3p shell. The L(sub 2,3) fluorescence yields for the (2p)-1 (3p)-n configurations of Ar are found to be 1.48, 17.97, 24.83, 37.84, 79.61, 112.16, and 121.48 x .0001 for n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, respectively. Results agree reasonably well with experimental fluorescence yields deduced from ion-atom collision measurements.

High performance dc-dc conversion with voltage multipliers

An experimental 100W 1000V dc-dc converter using a capacitor diode voltage multipler (CDVM) with a nominal frequency of 100 kHz is studied. A component weight of about 1 kg/kW was obtained. Design equations for current, output -ripple and -power, efficiency and output voltage are derived. Agreement between experimental results and calculations is fairly good except for ripple.

Charge transfer reactions in multiply charged ion-atom collisions

Charge-transfer reactions in collisions between highly charged ions and neutral atoms of hydrogen and/or helium may be rapid at thermal energies. If these reactions are rapid, they will suppress highly charged ions in H I regions and guarantee that the observed absorption features from such ions cannot originate in the interstellar gas. A discussion of such charge-transfer reactions is presented and compared with the available experimental data. The possible implications of these reactions for observations of the interstellar medium, H II regions, and planetary nebulae are outlined.

Production of soft X-ray emitting slow multiply charged ions - Recoil ion spectroscopy

S ions with a mean charge state of about 14+ and Cl ions with a mean charge state of 12+ were used to study Ne L-shell vacancy production. The ions caused copious production of NeII-NeVIII excited states with approximately 10 to the minus 18 sq cm cross sections. The induced recoil velocities might have application to a significantly higher resolution spectroscopy than is possible with beam-foil methods.

An energy-balance model with multiply-periodic and quasi-chaotic free oscillations

A slightly modified version of the one-dimensional time-dependent energy-balance climate model of Ghil and Bhattacharya (1978) is presented. The albedo-temperature parameterization has been reformulated and the smoothing of the temperature distribution in the tropics has been eliminated. The model albedo depends on time-lagged temperature in order to account for finite growth and decay time of continental ice sheets. Two distinct regimes of oscillatory behavior which depend on the value of the albedo-temperature time lag are considered.

Monolithic four-quadrant multiplier

Integrated configuration for "differential" sequential processor is less susceptible to noise than one using discrete components. Accuracy of version is unaffected by sample-and-hold (S/H) acquisition speed, S/H droop rate, and stray pickup by separate card-mounted parts.

Matrix vector multiplier with time varying single dimensional spatial light modulators

The applicability of iterative optical processors in environments requiring a short transient response time is analyzed. An approach is proposed utilizing acousto-optic single dimension light modulators where the matrix is the outer product of two vectors. The problems associated with a nonnegative real representation are addressed. A solution is proposed at some cost of processor speed.

The VLSI design of a Reed-Solomon encoder using Berlekamps bit-serial multiplier algorithm

Realization of a bit-serial multiplication algorithm for the encoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes on a single VLSI chip using NMOS technology is demonstrated to be feasible. A dual basis (255, 223) over a Galois field is used. The conventional RS encoder for long codes ofter requires look-up tables to perform the multiplication of two field elements. Berlekamp's algorithm requires only shifting and exclusive-OR operations.

Multiply reflected standing Alfven waves in the Io torus - Pioneer 10 observations

Observations from the Voyager 1 pass by the Io flux tube strongly suggest that large amplitude standing Alfven waves are generated as Jovian plasma flows past Io. It has recently been proposed by Gurnett and Goertz (1981) that this Io generated standing Alfven wave system extends an appreciable way around the Io L-shell. Observations are presented here of magnetic perturbations found in the Pioneer 10 record as it crossed the Io L-shell. The field perturbations are found to be qualitatively consistent with the passage of the spacecraft through a standing Alfven wave pattern. The observations suggest an Alfven Mach number of 0.03, which is 1/5 the value inferred from Voyager 1 observations. This implies a lower plasma density at the time of the flyby of Pioneer 10.
