Modification of magnetic ground state in Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 by thermal annealing

In this work, we have investigated the thermal annealing effect on the physical properties of an AlB 2 -type ternary intermetallic compound, Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 , that undergoes spin freezing behaviour coexisting with spatially limited antiferromagnetic phase below 9.9 K in as-cast form. Thermal annealing effect is found to result in considerable changes in the magnetic ground state properties of the system. Though only one magnetic transition around 9.9 K is observed for as-cast compound, the annealed sample exhibits two distinct magnetic transitions; one around T N ~ 13.5 K and another around T f ~ 4 K. The magnetization measurements and zero field neutron diffraction study reveal that the high temperature transition is antiferromagnetic type, though of limited correlation length, while the low temperature transition corresponds to spin freezing behaviour. The ac susceptibility and heat capacity studies also confirm the existence of frustrated cluster glass state at lower temperature than the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. Additionally, ac susceptibility data exhibits signature of an additional peak in the even lower temperature region (at 2.2 K for zero frequency) that tends to shift in opposite direction with frequency in contrast to that observed for conventional glassy transitions. The change in intrinsic local structural disorder of Ni and Si ions associated with annealing has been argued to be responsible for the different magnetic behaviour in as-cast and annealed samples.

Toughening Sm–Co sintered magnets via microstructure modification with additives

We report the mechanical properties of the brittle Smsingle bondCo permanent magnets are of great practical significance. However, studies on the magnets have mostly focused on their magnetic properties. This paper reports the modified microstructure and refined unimodal grain size, enhanced flexural strength, and magnetic properties of Sm 2 (Co,Fe,Cu,Zr) 17 sintered magnets doped with La 2 O 3 , MgO, and CaF 2 fine particulates. The correlations between microstructure, phase composition, and mechanical and magnetic properties were studied. Doping of a small amount (e.g., 0.5–3 wt%) of La 2 O 3 , MgO, or CaF 2 fine particulates could significantly refine the unimodal grain sizes of the Smsingle bondCo magnets via the Zener pinning effect. Moreover, doping significantly improved the flexural strengths σ of the magnets. For example, the σ values of the magnets with 0.5 wt% MgO, 1 wt% La 2 O 3 , and 1 wt% CaF 2 were approximately 65%, 63%, and 42% higher than that of the reference magnet, respectively. Micromechanical simulations revealed that the fine particles of La 2 O 3 could deflect crack growth, while the CaF 2 particles could attract or arrest cracks during the fracture process. The mechanical strengthening effect was mainly due to grain size refinement. The Smsingle bondCo magnets with 0.5–1.5 wt% CaF2 and 0.5 wt% La 2 O 3 exhibited excellent magnetic properties while doping 1–3 wt% La2O3 and 0.5–3 wt% MgO deteriorated magnetic performance. The rational design of CaF 2 - or La 2 O 3 -doped microstructure can be an economical and effective method for producing toughened Sm–Co sintered magnets with high magnetic performance.

Comment on “Investigations on ion irradiation induced modifications in Th 5f occupancy in thoria,” by P. Jegadeesan, S. Amirthapandian, Gurpreet Kaur, D. Sanjay Kumar, Arindam Das, D.K. Avasthi, K. Ananthasivan, B.K. Panigrahi

The primary purpose of this letter is to address some issues raised in the paper by Jegadeesan et al. There are three salient points. (1) The Branching Ratio (BR) analysis of thorium dioxide is complicated by peaks from Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). (2) Uranium metal is not an LS coupling but rather a delocalized 5f case. (3) Radiation damage effects in the BR measurements are small but strong effects can be seen in Resonant Photoemission.

Modification of lithium electrodeposition behavior by variation of electrode distance

Developing a better understanding and control over the lithium electrodeposition behavior will assist with the commercial application of lithium metal anodes for rechargeable batteries. Despite intensive research over the past decade, our understanding of the deposition of lithium is limited. Here a new observation on the effect of distance between the working electrode and the counter electrode for electrochemical lithium deposition behavior is reported. From this fundamental investigation of distance, the high lithium ion concentration regions formed by release of lithium ions from the counter electrode modify the lithium deposition behavior on the working electrode, resulting in the generation of non-uniform lithium dendrites with a thick diversely composed surface film. Alternatively, increasing the distance between the electrodes results in the deposition of a spherical lithium morphology with a thin LiF rich surface film. Here, this fundamental study provides a deeper understanding of correlation between lithium deposition behavior and electrode separation and provides insight to inhibit lithium dendrite formation.

Gas-phase surface modification to control catalyst structure and yields in methane dehydroaromatization

Methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) is a promising approach for direct methane transformation to aromatics and hydrogen. The benchmark catalyst Mo/H-ZSM-5 struggles to find commercial adoption because of thermodynamically-limited yields and rapid coking on Brønsted acid and molybdenum carbide species, especially on zeolite external surfaces. Here, gas-phase atomic layer deposition (ALD) overcoats H-ZSM-5 external surfaces with SiO 2 or Al 2 O 3 . NH 3 -TPD, HRTEM, and textural properties show that these overcoats exclusively passivate zeolite external surfaces. Under MDA conditions, SiO 2 gives softer coke and increases cumulative benzene yields by 25%, while Al 2 O 3 strongly decreases yields. H 2 -TPR and UV-visible and Raman spectroscopy show how the overcoats redisperse the MoO x precatalysts, especially over multiple deactivation and isothermal oxidative regeneration cycles. Combined with 27 Al-MAS NMR, MoO x redistribution and dealumination are seen as the causes of long-term deactivation over multiple regeneration cycles, and this process continues to occur regardless of the overcoat. Altogether, the deposition of a small amount of silica on the outer surface of Mo/H-ZSM-5 reduces the formation of hard coke, which could be regenerated by milder methods such as hydrogen treatment.

Grain subdivision and structural modifications by high-energy heavy ions in UO 2 with different initial grain size

Irradiation with 84 MeV Xe ions at peak fluence above 7 × 10 17 ions/cm 2 has been carried out on two UO 2 samples with different initial grain sizes at 300 °C and 500 °C. Characterization of both grain structure and bubble morphology has been performed using transmission electron microscopy, image analysis and precession electron diffraction. The bubble size in the large-grained sample was smaller than that in the standard-grain sample, confirming fission gas precipitation resistance in the former. The ion irradiation in the high electronic energy deposition range has caused formation of a large density of dislocations which resulted in grain polygonization for the sample with standard grain size, which was observed in multiple lamellas extracted next to each other at peak dose. The sample with large grains showed inconsistent behavior. In one case, dislocation pile-up occurred, but no sub-grain formation was observed. An adjacent location showed sub-grain formation, even if to less extent compared to the standard grain-size sample. Furthermore, these findings suggest a limited polygonization resistance in large-grained UO 2 compared to standard-grain UO 2 . Recrystallization of both sample surfaces was present, leaving unclear if this is a surface effect or a consequence of the highest energy deposition rate in this area.

Comparative study of surface modification and D retention between beryllium and beryllides under high flux plasma exposure

The microstructures and deuterium (D) retention properties were investigated for beryllium intermetallic compounds (beryllides), such as Be 12 Ti and Be 12 V, compared to pure beryllium (Be), exposed to high density pure D and helium (He) mixed plasmas. TEM cross-sectional observations revealed the formation of cone structures on the Be surface exposed to the plasmas at a moderate temperature of 573 K. The crystal structure of the cones and the mass loss caused by the plasma exposure implied that the cone structures were generated by sputtering. The Ti or V surface enrichment was observed on both beryllides with no cone structures developed. TDS measurements indicated that He seeding to D plasma caused a ~ 4 times reduction of the D retention for both beryllides, while no reduction was observed for Be. As a result, the beryllide samples exposed to D + He mixture plasmas showed a lower total D retention than in Be.
