Precision Measurement of Net-Proton-Number Fluctuations in Au + Au Collisions at RHIC

We report precision measurements on cumulants (𝐶 𝑛 ) and factorial cumulants (𝜅 𝑛 ) of (net) proton number distributions up to fourth order in Au + Au collisions over center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7–27 GeV from phase II of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. (Anti)protons are selected at midrapidity (|𝑦| < 0.5) within a transverse momentum range of 0.4 < 𝑝 𝑇 < 2.0 GeV/𝑐. Relative to various noncritical-point model calculations and peripheral collision 70%–80% data, the net proton 𝐶 4 /𝐶 2 measurement in 0%–5% collisions shows a minimum around 19.6 GeV for significance of deviation at ∼2–5⁢𝜎. A minimum in 𝐶 4 /𝐶 2 with respect to a noncritical baseline is expected to be a characteristic feature of the signature associated with a critical point in the QCD phase diagram. In addition, deviations from noncritical baselines around the same collision energy region are also seen in proton factorial cumulant ratios, especially in 𝜅 2 /𝜅 1 and 𝜅 3 /𝜅 1 . As a result, dynamical model calculations including a critical point are called for in order to understand these precision measurements.

Medium-induced modification of azimuthal correlations of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02}$ TeV

The azimuthal-correlation distributions between electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons and associated charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV are reported for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes. This measurement provides access to the jet-like correlation observables in the heavy-flavor sector in Pb–Pb collisions. The analysis is performed for trigger electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with transverse momentum $4< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{e} < 16~\textrm{GeV}/c$, considering associated particles within the transverse-momentum range $1< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{assoc} < 7$ GeV/c, and a pseudorapidity difference of $|\Delta \eta |<1$ between the trigger electron and associated particles. The per-trigger nuclear modification factor ( I AA ) is calculated to compare the near- and away-side peak yields to those in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV. In 0–10% central collisions, the indicates a hint of enhancement of associated-particle yields with $p_\textrm{T}<3$ GeV/c on the near side, and a suppression of yields with $p_\textrm{T}>4$ GeV/c on the away side. The I AA for electron triggers from heavy-flavor hadron decays is compared with that for light-flavor and strange-particle triggers to investigate the dependence on different fragmentation processes and parton-medium dynamics, and is found to be the same within uncertainties.

Hard-photon-triggered jets in 𝑝−𝑝 and 𝐴−𝐴 collisions

An investigation of high-transverse-momentum (high-𝑝 𝑇 ) photon-triggered jets in proton-proton (𝑝−𝑝) and ion-ion (𝐴−𝐴) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=0.2 and 5.02TeV is carried out, using the multistage description of in-medium jet evolution. Monte Carlo simulations of hard scattering and energy loss in heavy-ion collisions are performed using parameters tuned in a previous study of the nuclear modification factor (𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐴 ) for inclusive jets and high-𝑝𝑇 hadrons. We obtain a good reproduction of the experimental data for photon-triggered jet 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐴 , as measured by the ATLAS detector, the distribution of the ratio of jet to photon 𝑝 𝑇 (𝑋 𝐽⁢𝛾 ), measured by both CMS and ATLAS, and the photon-jet azimuthal correlation as measured by CMS. We obtain a moderate description of the photon-triggered jet 𝐼 𝐴⁢𝐴 , as measured by STAR. A noticeable improvement in the comparison is observed when one goes beyond prompt photons and includes bremsstrahlung and decay photons, revealing their significance in certain kinematic regions, particularly at 𝑋 𝐽⁢𝛾 >1. Moreover, azimuthal angle correlations demonstrate a notable impact of bremsstrahlung photons on the distribution, emphasizing their role in accurately describing experimental results. This work highlights the success of the multistage model of jet modification to straightforwardly predict (this set of) photon-triggered jet observables. This comparison, along with the role played by bremsstrahlung photons, has important consequences on the inclusion of such observables in a future Bayesian analysis.

Effect of recoils on soft-drop-groomed observables in 𝛾-tagged jets in a multistage approach

We investigate medium-induced modifications to jet substructure observables that characterize hard components in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Using a multistage Monte Carlo simulation of in-medium jet shower evolution, we explore flavor-dependent medium effects through simulations of inclusive and 𝛾-tagged jets. The results show that quark jets undergo a nonmonotonic modification compared with gluon jets in observables such as the Pb-Pb to 𝑝−𝑝 ratio of the soft drop prong angle 𝑟 𝑔 , the relative prong transverse momentum 𝑘 𝑇,𝑔 , and the groomed mass 𝑚 𝑔 distributions. Due to this nonmonotonic modification, 𝛾-tagged jets, enriched in quark jets, provide surprisingly clear signals of medium-induced structural modifications, distinct from effects dominated by selection bias. Further systematic studies demonstrate that these effects are dominated by recoil medium response. This work highlights the potential of hard substructures in 𝛾-tagged jets as powerful tools for probing the jet-medium interactions in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, in particular by enabling detailed investigations of jet-medium parton scatterings via their associated medium response. All simulations for 𝛾-tagged jet analyses carried out in this paper used triggered events containing at least one hard photon, which highlights the utility of these observables for future Bayesian analysis.

Triaxiality and shape dynamics in 70 Ge

The electromagnetic properties of low-lying states in 70 Ge were investigated via multi-step Coulomb excitation of a 70 Ge beam impinging on a 208 Pb target at the ATLAS facility of the Argonne National Laboratory. A total of 27 transitional elements and six diagonal matrix elements coupling 11 low-lying states, were extracted from the measured cross sections. These were used to calculate reduced transition probabilities, spectroscopic quadrupole moments, and rotational invariant shape parameters, providing enhanced precision and expanding on previous studies. The experimental data were compared within several theoretical frameworks, including the generalized triaxial rotor model, configuration interaction shell-model calculations, and computations within the combined frameworks of relativistic density functional theory and the five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian. The results demonstrate a good agreement with the experimental data and, in conjunction with calculations using a two-state mixing model, support significant triaxiality and strong mixing between the 0$^{+}_{1}$ and 0$^{+}_{2}$ states. This results in the magnitudes of their respective quadrupole deformations [β rms (0$^{+}_{1}$) = 0.228 (3), β rms (0$^{+}_{2}$) = 0.273 (1)] being more similar than previously observed. Furthermore, the implications of these results for understanding the complex shape coexistence phenomena, the role of triaxiality, and shape evolution along the Ge isotopic chain are discussed.

Search for the isospin-violating decays 𝜒 𝑐⁢𝐽 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c. and 𝜂 𝑐 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.

Using a sample of (2712.4 ± 14.3) × 10 6 𝜓⁡(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a search for the isospin-violating decays 𝜒 𝑐⁢𝐽 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.(𝐽 = 0,1,2) and 𝜂 𝑐 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c. No significant signal for 𝜒 𝑐⁢𝐽 or 𝜂 𝑐 is observed in the $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ invariant mass distribution. Locating the missing large-scale emission in the jet of M87* with short EHT baselines

In very-long baseline interferometric arrays, nearly co-located stations probe the largest scales and typically cannot resolve the observed source. In the absence of a large-scale structure, closure phases constructed with these stations are zero and, since they are independent of station-based errors, they can be used to probe data issues. Here, we show how these trivial closure phases become nonzero with a brightness distribution on smaller scales than their short baseline would suggest. When applied to sources that are made up of a bright compact and large-scale diffuse component, the trivial closure phases directly measure the centroid relative to the compact source and higher-order image moments. We present a technique to measure these image moments with minimal model assumptions and validate it on synthetic Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) data. We then apply this technique to 2017 and 2018 EHT observations of M87* and find a weak preference for extended emission in the direction of the large-scale jet. We also apply it to 2021 EHT data and measure the source centroid about 1 mas northwest of the compact ring, which is consistent with the jet observed at lower frequencies.
