Single Primary Heat Extraction and Removal Emulator (SPHERE) Power Transient Testing

For heat pipe cooled microreactor development, it is essential to understand the characteristics of heat pipes and how they function under a wide range of operating conditions. Modeling the startup and shutdown of heat pipe cooled microreactors has been a major challenge for the modeling code. Validating these parameters within the code is key for the development and licensing of heat pipe cooled microreactor designs. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has completed testing on power transients of a heat pipe with a range of operating conditions. The resulting temperature profiles from this testing can be utilized to aid in the validation of the startup and shutdown portions of the heat pipe modeling code.

Operation and Security Considerations for Heat Pipe Cooled Microreactors

Microreactors and small modular reactors (SMRs) are anticipated to be key elements in the United States' carbon-free energy portfolio, serving as reliable power sources for remote communities, disaster relief zones, extraterrestrial deployments, and backup power needs. Microreactors employ technologies that are substantially more advanced and recent compared to conventional reactors. Furthermore, they are of a drastically smaller scale and are designed to be operated in a diverse set of locations, offering operational flexibility and mobility. In addition, the autonomous or semi-autonomous operation of microreactors with minimal or no on-site staff is anticipated. These factors give rise to specific challenges with regards to their safety and security. The present work investigates considerations related to heat pipe operation, reactor transport, and cyber/cyberphysical security to ensure the indirect and direct consequences of nefarious actors’ actions are understood and can be mitigated by design or through physical security measures. In addition, future directions are proposed for consideration by both HPMR designers and for regulators.

Evaporator Temperature Transient Testing of a High-Performance Sodium Filled Heat Pipe

Heat pipes are two-phase heat transfer devices that enable passive removal of heat from the reactor core to the power conversion system in heat pipe-cooled microreactor designs. Experimental investigations of heat pipe transients are needed for technology demonstration, verification and validation of numerical codes, and the establishment of regulatory requirements. The Single Primary Heat Extraction and Removal Emulator (SPHERE) facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) serves as a platform for evaluating the dynamic response of high-temperature heat pipes under a variety of operating conditions. The present work details the experimental investigation of a high-performance, defined as over 2 kW sodium heat pipe subjected to rapid input power fluctuations induced by sudden changes in the evaporator temperature setpoint. In addition, the heat pipe was subjected to an asymmetrical heat load where a subset of heaters operated at 30% and 70% below their nominal power. These experimental conditions were chosen to simulate thermal and operational stresses expected to be encountered in microreactors to provide data on heat pipe behavior during such important transient events. Key data and performance metrics, including time series of temperatures and strains, axial temperature profiles, thermal response times, and heat transfer capabilities, the thermal output over thermal input, were reported and discussed. The results highlight the resilience of heat pipes, revealing their potential to maintain thermal stability and efficiency under varying power loads. Lastly, the paper concludes with a discussion on the significance of the results and their implications for future research.

Modeling a generic TRISO-fueled heat pipe microreactor using SCALE: Depletion, transportation criticality, and shielding

This paper demonstrates the applicability of the SCALE code system to tristructural-isotropic (TRISO)-fueled heat pipe microreactors through depletion, transportation criticality, and shielding analyses of a generic reference design. The study conducted supports US Nuclear Regulatory Commission code readiness efforts for advanced non–light-water reactor technologies and is intended as a code capability demonstration rather than as an optimization of a specific microreactor design. The modeled reactor employs high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) uranium oxycarbide (UCO) TRISO fuel and beryllium oxide (BeO) reflectors and operates at 7.5 MWth with a nominal lifetime of about 3 effective full power years. Representative cases for fresh and irradiated cores were selected to exercise SCALE methods relevant to reactor operation and post-irradiation transport. The discharged-core decay heat is approximately 6% of operating power immediately after shutdown. Transportation criticality calculations show that internal water ingress is the dominant reactivity effect, with fully flooded fresh core and irradiated core configurations remain above the subcriticality criterion, even with the available control mechanisms. Shielding calculations for a simplified transportation package indicate that normal-condition dose rates are governed mainly by shielding thickness and cooling time, whereas the breached hypothetical accident case is governed primarily by cooling time. Overall, the study shows that SCALE supports depletion, transportation criticality, and shielding evaluations efficiently for TRISO-fueled heat pipe microreactors within a single code system.

Process Heat for Chemical Industry

Process heating with nuclear energy can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing combustion of fossil fuels in fired heaters as steam boilers. Light water reactors can replace the majority of steam duties used by industry; however, high temperature processes such as steam methane reforming require advanced high temperature reactors. Here, guidance on matching the scale of nuclear reactors with specific industries is provided. Principles of heat transport, temperature boosting, and substitution for hot combustion gases are also discussed in this section.

Strain gauge for testing microreactor hexagonal core blocks in the Single Primary Heat Extraction and Removal Emulator

To support the development and deployment of microreactor technologies, experiments that help verify and validate reactor systems and components are performed at non-nuclear test facilities. The Single Primary Heat Extraction Removal Emulator at Idaho National Laboratory is one of these test facilities and was used to monitor a test article that has a prototypic geometry of a heat-pipe cooled microreactor core block. To collect crucial temperature and strain data during testing, temperature and strain sensing fiber optics were embedded to the surface of the test article using an ultrasonic additive manufacturing technique. To support and provide benchmark strain data for the embedded sensors, a commercial resistive strain gauge was attached. This report will discuss the results from the deployment of the commercial strain gauge which includes the setup/attachment strategies, data acquisition, and analysis of the strain data.

Assessing fuel cycle design options for advanced microreactors

Microreactor (MR) technology have recently gained traction due to their reduced construction cost compared to traditional large reactors. Their small physical geometry results in increased neutron leakage and deteriorated neutron economy which limits the achievable burnup of MR fuel. Refueling strategy currently discussed in MR design community is the battery-like refueling which is involve replacing the entire reactor core at the end of their operational cycle. Here, this paper investigates partial core refueling as means to increase MR fuel burnup and improve fuel cycle economy as a result. Two fuel cycle design strategies have been successful. These are the partial core refueling and partial core refueling combined with assembly rotation. Both strategies have been tested to operate a heatpipe-cooled MR referred to as the eVinci-like core for 72 Effective Full Power Months (EFPMs). The partial core refueling showed to reduce the refueling requirements by 18% compared to the battery-like refueling strategy. This corresponds to 10.5% reduction in the Net Present Value (NPV) of fuel cost over the 72 EFPMs of operation. The partial core refueling combined with rotation case reduces the refueling requirements by 29% (corresponding to 14.5% reduction in NPV of fuel cost) compared to the battery-like refueling strategy.
