Single‐Step Deformation Processing of Ultrathin Lithium Foil and Strip

Abstract Next‐generation, high‐efficiency energy storage and conversion systems require development of lithium metal batteries. But the high cost of production and constraints on thickness of lithium (anode) foils continue to limit adoption for integration into battery cell architectures. Here, a novel lithium anode manufacturing solution is demonstrated – single‐step production of ultrathin gauge foil formats directly from solid ingot. Hybrid cutting‐based deformation processes, involving large plastic strains and strain rates, produce foil to sub‐10 µm thickness, with surface quality even superior to present Li anode processing routes. Energy analysis shows the single‐stage processing is ≈50% more efficient than conventional processing by extrusion‐rolling. Through in situ force measurements and high‐speed imaging of the cutting it also characterize – for the first time – the flow stress of Li to strain rates of 800 sec −1 , revealing a power‐law relationship. The results present a paradigm shift in manufacturing and integration of solid lithium anodes for energy applications.

Hybrid Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing of Dual‐Wavelength Photopolymer Thermosets

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques such as digital light processing (DLP) AM and stereolithography enable the production of highly complex structures with speed and ease as not previously possible. However, many traditional thermosetting photopolymers used in these processes result in a permanently crosslinked structure incapable of being broken down or modified without the use of energy-intensive processes such as mechanical machining or ablation. To overcome this limitation, this production is described of thiol-ene photopolymer thermosets with dual-wavelength photopolymerization and photodegradation reaction pathways. The dual wavelength selectivity of the polymerization (405 nm) and degradation (365 nm) processes, combined with dual-wavelength DLP AM technology, enables hybrid manufacturing with the ability to add and sequentially subtract material with excellent spatiotemporal control. 2D lithographs and complex 3D architectures with soft elastomeric properties are produced with resolutions as small as 50 µm. Furthermore, the ability to selectively subtract supports from 3D printed structures with deliberate and accurate control is demonstrated. In conclusion, the ability to correct or modify existing structures enables a new paradigm of adaptable materials for corrective manufacturing techniques and temporary structures.

Electronic Bottleneck Suppression in Next‐Generation Networks with Integrated Photonic Digital‐to‐Analog Converters

Digital‐to‐analog converters (DAC) are indispensable functional units in signal processing instrumentation and wide‐band telecommunication links for both civil and military applications. As photonic systems are capable of high data throughput and low latency, an increasingly found system limitation stems from the required domain crossing such as digital to analog and electronic to optical. A photonic DAC implementation, in contrast, enables a seamless signal conversion with respect to both energy efficiency and short signal delay, often requiring bulky discrete optical components and electric–optic transformation, hence introducing inefficiencies. Herein, a novel coherent parallel photonic DAC concept along with a 4‐bit experimental prototype capable of performing this DAC without optic–electric–optic domain crossing is introduced. This new paradigm guarantees a linear intensity weighting among bits when operating at high sampling rates (50 GHz), featuring an exceptional sampling efficiency (> 100 GS ) and small footprint (≈1 mm 2 ) in an 8‐bit implementation. Importantly, this photonic DAC enables seamless interfaces of next‐generation data processing hardware with high relevance in data centers, task‐specific compute accelerators such as neuromorphic engines, and network edge processing applications.

InAs Terahertz Metalens Emitter for Focused Terahertz Beam Generation

Metasurfaces have opened doors to combining multiple photonic functionalities in a single compact device. In particular, the ability to generate short terahertz (THz) pulses with precise wavefront engineering in a single THz metasurface redefined the role metasurfaces can play in THz systems. Here, an InAs metalens emitter which generates and focuses a THz pulse beam is demonstrated using a 130 nm thick InAs metasurface designed as a binary‐phase Fresnel zone plate. The THz beam is focused to a spot of ≈430 μm at 1 THz with a short focal length of 5 mm and large numerical aperture of 0.5. Nanoscale InAs Mie resonators comprising the metasurface enable THz generation with an amplitude as high as 20 times compared to plasmonic THz emitters and several times compared to a 1 mm thick ZnTe crystal. This InAs metasurface emitter provides a new paradigm for designing THz imaging, spectroscopy, and communication systems, where THz beam generation and shaping are performed with a single device without compromising the generation efficiency, while eliminating losses and avoiding limitations of phase matching of conventional nonlinear optics approaches.

Spatial Engineering Direct Cooperativity between Binding Sites for Uranium Sequestration

Preorganization is a basic design principle used by nature that allows for synergistic pathways to be expressed. Herein, a full account of the conceptual and experimental development from randomly distributed functionalities to a convergent arrangement that facilitates cooperative binding is given, thus conferring exceptional affinity toward the analyte of interest. The resulting material with chelating groups populated adjacently in a spatially locked manner displays up to two orders of magnitude improvement compared to a random and isolated manner using uranium sequestration as a model application. This adsorbent shows exceptional extraction efficiencies, capable of reducing the uranium concentration from 5 ppm to less than 1 ppb within 10 min, even though the system is permeated with high concentrations of competing ions. The efficiency is further supported by its ability to extract uranium from seawater with an uptake capability of 5.01 mg g -1 , placing it among the highest-capacity seawater uranium extraction materials described to date. The concept presented here uncovers a new paradigm in the design of efficient sorbent materials by manipulating the spatial distribution to amplify the cooperation of functions.

Highly Conductive Polyoxanorbornene‐Based Polymer Electrolyte for Lithium‐Metal Batteries

Abstract This present study illustrates the synthesis and preparation of polyoxanorbornene‐based bottlebrush polymers with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) side chains by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization for solid polymer electrolytes (SPE). In addition to the conductive PEO side chains, the polyoxanorbornene backbones may act as another ion conductor to further promote Li‐ion movement within the SPE matrix. These results suggest that these bottlebrush polymer electrolytes provide impressively high ionic conductivity of 7.12 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature and excellent electrochemical performance, including high‐rate capabilities and cycling stability when paired with a Li metal anode and a LiFePO 4 cathode. The new design paradigm, which has dual ionic conductive pathways, provides an unexplored avenue for inventing new SPEs and emphasizes the importance of molecular engineering to develop highly stable and conductive polymer electrolytes for lithium‐metal batteries (LMB).

When Machine Learning Meets 2D Materials: A Review

The availability of an ever-expanding portfolio of 2D materials with rich internal degrees of freedom (spin, excitonic, valley, sublattice, and layer pseudospin) together with the unique ability to tailor heterostructures made layer by layer in a precisely chosen stacking sequence and relative crystallographic alignments, offers an unprecedented platform for realizing materials by design. However, the breadth of multi-dimensional parameter space and massive data sets involved is emblematic of complex, resource-intensive experimentation, which not only challenges the current state of the art but also renders exhaustive sampling untenable. To this end, machine learning, a very powerful data-driven approach and subset of artificial intelligence, is a potential game-changer, enabling a cheaper – yet more efficient – alternative to traditional computational strategies. It is also a new paradigm for autonomous experimentation for accelerated discovery and machine-assisted design of functional 2D materials and heterostructures. Here, the study reviews the recent progress and challenges of such endeavors, and highlight various emerging opportunities in this frontier research area.

Volumetric Additive Manufacturing of Dicyclopentadiene by Solid‐State Photopolymerization

Polymerization in the solid state is generally infeasible due to restrictions on mobility. However, in this work, the solid-state photopolymerization of crystalline dicyclopentadiene is demonstrated via photoinitiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The source of mobility in the solid state is attributed to the plastic crystal nature of dicyclopentadiene, which yields local short-range mobility due to orientational degrees of freedom. Polymerization in the solid state enables photopatterning, volumetric additive manufacturing of free-standing structures, and fabrication with embedded components. Solid-state photopolymerization of dicyclopentadiene offers a new paradigm for advanced and freeform fabrication of high-performance thermosets.

Overcoming the Damping–Elasticity Paradox via 3D‐Printed NiTiSn Nanocomposite

Abstract Developing high damping alloys (HDAs) with large elastic strain has attracted growing attention due to the increasing demand for energy absorption with overload reliability and reusability. However, damping capacity inherently conflicts with elasticity, because the former requires a liable movement of crystal defects while the latter opposite. To deal with the damping‐elasticity paradox, the advantage of pseudobinary eutectic reaction and rapid cooling of laser powder bed fusion is taken to fabricate a bulk NiTiSn nanocomposite with a two‐level hierarchical structure. The first‐level architecture is composed of martensitic NiTi nanolamellae and reinforced Ti 3 Sn nanolamellae. In addition to lattice strain matching and lamellar boundary strengthening, a novel mechanism of martensite reorientation mediated by reversible stress‐induced detwinning‐twinning is activated to generate large elastic strain. A high density of nanotwins and nanodomains within NiTi nanolamellae constitute the second‐level architecture, which provides pronounced internal friction for high damping capacity. As a result, our NiTiSn nanocomposite exhibits a record‐high integration of damping capacity (tanδ > 0.10) and elastic strain (exceeding 4.5%), as well as superb stability under cyclic overload. This research not only represents a major breakthrough in achieving HDAs with outstanding damping and elastic strain but also offers a novel paradigm for high‐performance functional and structural materials.

Needle-Like Ferroelastic Domains in Individual Ferroelectric Nanoparticles

Superior structural, physical and electronic properties make ferroelectric nanocrystals essential in enabling a range of next-generation devices. Ferroelectric responses are determined by crystal structure and domain morphology. The ability to reversibly displace, create and annihilate elastic domains is critical to device applications. Whereas electric-field control has been demonstrated for ferroelectric 180° surface domain walls and vortices, similar control of ferroelastic domains and domain boundaries within individual nanocrystals remains challenging. Using controlled external compressive and tensile axial stress, deterministic and reversible control of highly mobile ferroelastic domains and axial polarization in three dimensions is demonstrated in this study. While many studies exist on ferroelastic domains in thin films and bulk, little is known about ferroelastic interactions at the single nanoparticle level, especially involving domain boundaries. Through combining Bragg coherent X-ray diffractive imaging and Landau theory, strain gradients in individual BaTiO3 nanocrystals are shown to stabilize needle-like ferroelastic twin domains. These domains are highly labile under applied axial stress, producing a locally enhanced electric polarization mediated by a ferroelectric phase transition. The efficacy of Bragg coherent X-ray diffractive imaging in studying in operando domains in three-dimensions is demonstrated, while synergy with theory provides a paradigm for domain boundary engineering and potential for nanoscale functional devices.

Proximity Ferroelectricity in Compositionally Graded Structures

Proximity ferroelectricity is a novel paradigm for inducing ferroelectricity in a non-ferroelectric polar material, such as AlN or ZnO that are typically unswitchable with an external field below their dielectric breakdown field. When placed in direct contact with a thin switchable ferroelectric layer (such as Al 1-x Sc x N or Zn 1-x Mg x O), they become a practically switchable ferroelectric. Using the thermodynamic Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, in this work, we perform the finite element modeling of the polarization switching in the compositionally graded AlN-Al 1-x Sc x N, ZnO-Zn 1-x Mg x O, and MgO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structures sandwiched in both a parallel-plate capacitor geometry as well as in a sharp probe-planar electrode geometry. We reveal that the compositionally graded structure allows the simultaneous switching of spontaneous polarization in the whole system by a coercive field significantly lower than the electric breakdown field of unswitchable polar materials. The physical mechanism is the depolarization electric field determined by the gradient of chemical composition “x”. The field lowers the steepness of the switching barrier in the otherwise unswitchable parts of the compositionally graded AlN-Al 1-x Sc x N and ZnO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structures. In the MgO-like regions of the compositionally graded MgO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structure, a shallow double-well free energy potential emerges. Proximity ferroelectric switching of the compositionally graded structures placed in the probe-electrode geometry occurs due to nanodomain formation under the tip. We predict that a gradient of chemical composition “x” significantly lowers effective coercive fields of the compositionally graded AlN-Al 1-x Sc x N and ZnO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structures compared to the coercive fields of the corresponding multilayers with a uniform chemical composition in each layer. A tip-induced switching further lowers the coercive field, enabling control of ferroelectric domains in otherwise unswitchable compositionally graded structures, which can provide nanoscale domain control for memory, actuation, sensing, and optical applications.

High-Entropy Metal Sulfide Nanoparticles Promise High-Performance Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Transition metal sulfide with a multi-elemental nature represents a class of promising catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to its good catalytic activity. However, its synthesis remains a grand challenge due to the thermodynamic immiscibility of the constituent multimetallic elements in a sulfide structure. Herein, we for the first time report a high-entropy metal sulfide (HEMS, i.e., (CrMnFeCoNi)Sx) solid solution nanoparticles. Computational and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis suggest that the (CrMnFeCoNi)S x exhibits a synergistic effect among metal atoms that leads to desired electronic states to enhance OER activity. The (CrMnFeCoNi)Sx nanoparticles showed one of the best activities (low overpotential 295 mV at 100 mA cm -2 in 1 M KOH solution) and good durability (only slight polarization after 10 hours by chronopotentiometry) compared with the unary, binary, ternary, and quaternary sulfide counterparts. This work opens up a new synthesis paradigm for high-entropy compound nanoparticles for highly efficient electrocatalysis applications.

Atomic Gradient Structure Alters Electronic Structure in 3D across the Bulk and Enhances Photoactivity

Abstract Understanding structure–function relationships enables the design of materials with tailored functionalities. The long‐standing challenge is to design materials with high active volume to improve efficiency. Tailored grain boundaries and lattice defects are traditionally used to tune the electronic structure near interfaces or defects to promote electron and hole separation. However, the active volume of point defect sites or interfaces in these traditional photocatalysts is extremely low. This study reports a structure with continuous atomic positional deformation across the bulk, altering the electronic structure in 3D and creating a significantly higher active volume. Such a structure in anatase is obtained and tuned by phase transformation during the heating process. Transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory results reveal that atomic deformations result in continuous band bending across the particles, facilitating electron–hole separation, inhibiting their recombination, and inducing dramatically enhanced photoactivity. These findings enable a different materials design paradigm that can potentially be harnessed for a broad range of applications.

Why Increased CdSeTe Charge Carrier Lifetimes and Radiative Efficiencies did not Result in Voltage Boost for CdTe Solar Cells

After a focused effort over the last decade, order-of-magnitude improvements in doping and electro-optical characteristics (radiative efficiency, carrier lifetime, and passivation) have been reported for polycrystalline CdSeTe solar cells. Surprisingly, this did not result in higher solar cell voltages regardless of device contacting layers, absorber grading profiles, and other changes in device architecture. From detailed evaluation of radiative emission and carrier dynamics in CdSeTe heterostructures and devices, it is shown that the complexity introduced to the absorber to achieve lifetime and passivation metrics resulted in charge carrier trapping, which now negatively affects CdSeTe absorbers.

Pseudocapacitance Facilitates the Electrocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide

Electroreduction of CO 2 to value-added products is a promising strategy for CO 2 reuse, where copper has a unique ability to produce oxygenates and C 2+ products. Unfortunately, the electronic factors making copper so unique are unknown, which limits the ability to design improved catalysts. By combining in situ surface-sensitive X-ray resonant photoelectron spectroscopy with density functional theory calculations, the complex electronic structure of copper is uncovered during the electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . It is found that the pseudocapacitive charging of copper, produced by the incorporation of protons and electrons into the subsurface, facilitates the activation of CO 2 , while simultaneously increasing the barrier for H-H coupling. The net result is that cathodic pseudocapacitive charge suppresses the hydrogen evolution reaction and promotes the production of hydrocarbons and oxygenated products on copper. These results represent a new paradigm in the understanding of CO 2 reduction, highlighting the key role of pseudocapacitive charge in the reaction.

AI‐Driven Robot Enables Synthesis‐Property Relation Prediction for Metal Halide Perovskites in Humid Atmosphere

Materials Acceleration Platforms (MAPs) – also known as self-driving laboratories– present a new paradigm for materials science and promise an order of magnitude accelerated materials discovery compared to the traditional trial-and-error approach. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are an emerging class of materials for optoelectronic applications but are plagued by irreproducible optoelectronic quality, particularly for films fabricated in a humid atmosphere. Here, in this work, a machine learning (ML)-guided closed-loop platform is developed with a multimodal data fusion approach to predict synthesis–property relations for the optical quality of MHP thin films in relative humidities (RHs) ranging from 5–55%. The efficiency of this approach is confirmed by the fast-dropping learning rate to 2% after experimentally sampling less than 1% of the possible 5,000+ combinations. The prediction of synthesis–property relations is done by optical and imaging characterizations. In situ photoluminescence characterization revealed the origin of thin film quality variation at different RH. These insights provide an avenue for controlling the MHP crystallization by fine-tuning the synthesis parameters and RH for a given chemistry, thus lifting the need for stringent atmosphere control. The MAP enables an accelerated screening and understanding of the synthesis design space, facilitating rational synthesis recipe choice for a wide range of materials.
