Planar Systems for Quantum Information

This project aims to develop two‐dimensional (2D) moiré materials as a quantum simulator to implement model Hamiltonians and their phase diagrams. Progress in quantum information science (QIS) requires the development of advanced quantum materials systems. The rich family of layered van der Waals materials and their heterostructures present opportunities to create previously unrealized types of applications for QIS. Specifically, when two layers of van der Waals materials are overlaid with a small twist angle or/and lattice mismatch, a moiré superlattice with a period of about ten nanometers is formed. This provides a periodic trapping potential for electrons. Electrons can tunnel between the traps and repel each other by their mutual Coulomb interactions. The platform of 2D moiré materials provides many attractive features, including tunability of length and energy scales, charge density, and even lattice symmetry. It presents new possibilities for realizing quantum simulation of the many-body physics in a solid-state platform. This integrated team of six investigators seeks to develop relevant theoretical treatments to link ab-initio studies of 2D moiré materials to model Hamiltonians and to evaluate correlated phases predicted by these model Hamiltonians in the relevant regimes. On the experimental side, the team aims to develop methods to realize a homogeneous and highly controlled potential landscape for the electrons and to initiate, protect, and measure their quantum many-body states.

Monochromation of pulsed electron beams with terahertz radiation at a planar mirror

Exquisite control of electron beam energy is required for many electron spectroscopy and imaging applications. For both continuous and pulsed beams, the beam energy spread is fundamentally limited by the electron source, and is typically a sizable fraction of an electron-volt. In this paper, we present a means to reduce electron beam energy spread after emission to the level of a few 10s of meV rms using femtosecond photoemission and an interaction with laser-derived single- to few-cycle terahertz (THz) radiation. We show analytically and in particle tracking simulations that this interaction can remove energy spread stored in both the transverse and longitudinal degrees of freedom. We analytically formulate the limit of energy spread that this technique can achieve, and map the non-ideal affects arising at high frequencies. The interaction is mediated by the beam's passage through a mirror which is reflective to terahertz radiation but allows transmission of the majority of the electron beam (e.g. a wire mesh). This method then only requires beam current losses of a few tens of percent, far smaller than what is achieved in prism and slit-based electron monochromators.

Method of generation of planar plasma jets

Applications of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) based atmospheric pressure plasma jets are often limited by the relatively small area of treatment due to their 1D configuration. This system generates 2D plasma jets permitting fast treatment of larger targets. DBD evolution starts with formation of transient anode glow, and continues with development of cathode-directed streamers. The anode glow can propagate as an ionization wave along the dielectric surface through and outside of the discharge gap. Plasma propagation is not limited to 1D geometry such as tubes, and can be organized in a form of a rectangular plasma jet, or other 2D or 3D shapes. Also described are a method for generating 2D plasma jets and use of the 2D plasma jets for cancer therapy.

Medium voltage planar DC bus distributed capacitor array

An inverter with a modular bus assembly is described. In various embodiments, the modular bus assembly includes a laminated motherboard and a plurality of capacitor daughtercards. The laminated motherboard can be configured to interface a plurality of phase-leg modules and a plurality of capacitor daughtercards through a plurality of terminals and connectors located on a bottom side or a top side of the laminated motherboard. The laminated motherboard includes a layer stack with a plurality of conductor layers. Each of the plurality of conductor layers is implemented with a net spacing from a neighboring plated through hole (PTH) based at least in part on differences in potential to be applied to each of the plurality of conductor layers as compared to a potential to be applied to the PTH. Embedded shield polygons can be implemented on the laminated motherboard to mitigate surface discharge at surface terminal (PTH/SMT) triple junctions.

Planar mechanical actuation system for adjustable luminaires

A mechanical actuation system for a light fixture that allows for translation of an array of optics relative to an array of light sources in a defined plane. The system can prevent undesired movement such as rotation or out-of-plane motion. A simple and intuitive user interface enables a user to point a resulting light beam in a desired direction without requiring an understanding of the internal mechanical system. The user interface may include a manually manipulated touch point such as a joystick, knob, or other interface.
