Localized 𝑓-electron magnetism in the semimetal Ce 3 ⁢ Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3

Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 crystallizes in the same noncentrosymmetric cubic structure as the prototypical Kondo insulator Ce 3 ⁢ Bi 4 ⁢Pt 3 . Here we report the physical properties of Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 single crystals using magnetization, thermodynamic, and electrical-transport measurements. Magnetic-susceptibility and heat-capacity data reveal antiferromagnetic order below 𝑇 𝑁 =3.2K. The magnetic entropy 𝑆 mag reaches 𝑅⁢ ln⁡ 2 slightly above 𝑇 𝑁 , which suggests localized 4⁢𝑓 moments in a doublet ground state. Multiple field-induced magnetic transitions are observed at temperatures below 𝑇 𝑁 , which indicate a complex spin structure with competing interactions. Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 shows semimetallic behavior in electrical resistivity in contrast to the majority of reported cerium-based 343 compounds which are semiconducting. Electrical-resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure reveal a slight enhancement of 𝑇 𝑁 under pressures up to 2.3 GPa, which supports a scenario wherein Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢Au 3 belongs to the far left of the Doniach phase diagram dominated by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions. Using realistic many-body simulations, we confirm the semimetallic electronic structure of Ce 3 ⁢Bi 4 ⁢ Au 3 and quantitatively reproduce its local moment behavior in the paramagnetic state.

$μ^+$ Knight shift in UTe 2 : Evidence for relocalization in a Kondo lattice

The local magnetic susceptibility of the spin-triplet superconductor UTe 2 has been investigated by positive muon (μ + ) Knight shift measurements in the normal state. Three distinct μ + Knight shift components are observed for a magnetic field applied parallel to the c axis. Two of these exhibit a breakdown in the linear relationship with the bulk magnetic susceptibility (χ) below a temperature T*~30K, which points to a gradual emergence of a correlated Kondo liquid. Below T r ~12K linearity is gradually restored, indicating relocalization of the Kondo liquid quasiparticles. The third Knight shift component is two orders of magnitude larger, and despite the c-axis alignment of the external field, scales with the a axis χ above T r ~12K. We conjecture that this component is associated with magnetic clusters and the change in the temperature dependence of all three Knight shift components below T r is associated with a change in magnetic correlations. Finally, our findings indicate that prior to the onset of superconductivity the development of the itinerant heavy-electron fluid is halted by a gradual development of local U 5⁢ƒ-moment fluctuations.

Magnetism in the axion insulator candidate Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 is a member of a family of orthorhombic nonsymmorphic rare-earth intermetallics that combines large localized magnetic moments and itinerant exchange with a low carrier density and perpendicular glide planes. This may result in special topological crystalline (wallpaper fermion) or axion insulating phases. Recent studies of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals have revealed colossal negative magnetoresistance and multiple magnetic phase transitions. Here, we clarify this ordering process using neutron scattering, resonant elastic x-ray scattering, muon spin-rotation, and magnetometry. The nonsymmorphic and multisite character of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 results in coplanar noncollinear magnetic structures with an Ising-like net magnetization along the a axis. A reordering transition, attributable to competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, manifests as the onset of a second commensurate Fourier component. In the absence of spatially resolved probes, the experimental evidence for this low-temperature state can be interpreted either as an unusual double- q structure or in a phase separation scenario. The net magnetization produces variable anisotropic hysteretic effects which also couple to charge transport. The implied potential for functional domain physics and topological transport suggests that this structural family may be a promising platform to implement concepts of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics. Probing quantum criticality in ferromagnetic CeRh 6 Ge 4

CeRh 6 Ge 4 is unusual in that its ferromagnetic transition can be suppressed continuously to zero temperature, i.e., to a ferromagnetic quantum-critical point (QCP), through the application of modest hydrostatic pressure. This discovery has raised the possibility that the ferromagnetic QCP may be of the Kondo-breakdown type characterized by a jump in Fermi volume, to which thermopower S measurements should be sensitive. Further, though S/T changes both sign and magnitude around the critical pressure P c ≈ 0.8 GPa, these changes are not abrupt but extend over a pressure interval from within the ferromagnetic state up to P c . Together with temperature and pressure variations in electrical resistivity and previously reported heat capacity, thermopower results point to the near coincidence of two sequential effects near P c , delocalization of 4f degrees of freedom through orbital-selective hybridization followed by quantum criticality of itinerant ferromagnetism.

X-ray spectroscopic investigation of crystal fields in Ce 2 Rh 1 − x Ir x In 8 heavy fermions

The higher dimensionality in the crystal fields of the Ce 2 M In 8 ( M = Rh , Ir ) compounds and its interplay with hybridization and disorder are key ingredients to understand the complex phase diagrams by this family, which have been explored extensively by macroscopic techniques. Here, we present an investigation of the crystal-electric field schemes of Ce 2 Rh 1 − x Ir x In 8 using x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our full multiplet calculations for the 4 f 1 configuration of Ce 3 + to describe the temperature-dependent linear dichroism in Ce 2 M In 8 are consistent with a Γ 7 1 = 1 − α 2 · | ∓ 3 2 〉 − | α | · | ± 5 2 〉 ground state containing a predominant | ± 3 / 2 〉 contribution that increases further with x . This enhancement is believed to favor superconductivity in Ce-based heavy fermion materials, observed in previous results in the Ce M In 5 family. Our recent observations shed light on the unexpected emergence of the ambient-pressure superconducting dome in the center of the composition phase diagram and its subsequent suppression on the Ir-rich side due to the early onset of fluctuations associated with the structurally more disordered state, inferred from previous neutron magnetic diffraction experiments. Excess heat capacity in magnetically ordered Ce heavy-fermion metals

Herein we study the magnetic heat capacity of a series of magnetically ordered Ce-based heavy-fermion materials, which show an anomalous T 3 heat capacity in excess of the phonon contribution in many materials. For compounds for which magnon models have been worked out, we show that the local-moment magnon heat capacity derived from the measured magnon spectra underestimates the experimental specific heat. The excess heat capacity reveals increasing density of states with increasing energy, akin to a pseudogap. We show that this anomalous temperature-dependent term is not associated with proximity to a quantum critical point, but is strongly correlated with T N , indicating the anomalous excitations are governed by the magnetic exchange interaction. This insight may hold key information for understanding magnetically ordered heavy fermions.

Magnetic edge fields in UTe 2 near zero background fields

Chiral superconductors are theorized to exhibit spontaneous edge currents. Here, in this study, we found magnetic fields at the edges of UTe 2 , a candidate odd-parity chiral superconductor, that seem to agree with predictions for a chiral order parameter. However, we did not detect the chiral domains that would be expected, and recent polar Kerr and muon spin relaxation data in nominally clean samples argue against chiral superconductivity. Our results show that hidden sources of magnetism must be carefully ruled out when using spontaneous edge currents to identify chiral superconductivity.

Cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy of electrons from tritium $β$ decay and 83m Kr internal conversion

Project 8 has developed a novel technique, cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES), for direct neutrino mass measurements. A CRES-based experiment on the beta spectrum of tritium has been carried out in a small-volume apparatus. Here, we provide a detailed account of the experiment, focusing on systematic effects and analysis techniques. In a Bayesian (frequentist) analysis, we measure the tritium endpoint as ${18}$ ${553}_{—19}^{+18}$ (${18}$ ${548}_{—19}^{+19}$) eV and set upper limits of 155 (152) eV (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mass. No background events are observed beyond the endpoint in 82 days of running. We also demonstrate an energy resolution of 1.66 ± 0.19 eV in a resolution-optimized magnetic trap configuration by measuring 83m Kr 17.8-keV internal-conversion electrons. These measurements establish CRES as a low-background, high-resolution technique with the potential to advance neutrino mass sensitivity

Measurement of neutrino and antineutrino neutral-current quasielasticlike interactions on oxygen by detecting nuclear deexcitation γ rays

Neutrino- and antineutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielasticlike interactions are measured at Super-Kamiokande using nuclear deexcitation γ rays to identify signal-like interactions in data from a 14.94 ( 16.35 ) × 10 20 protons-on-target exposure of the T2K neutrino (antineutrino) beam. The measured flux-averaged cross sections on oxygen nuclei are < σ ν - NCQE > = 1.70 ± 0.17 ( stat . ) - 0.38 + 0.51 ( syst . ) × 10 - 38 cm 2 / oxygen with a flux-averaged energy of 0.82 GeV and < σ ν ¯ - NCQE > = 0.98 ± 0.16 ( stat . ) - 0.19 + 0.26 ( syst . ) × 10 - 38 cm 2 / oxygen with a flux-averaged energy of 0.68 GeV, for neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. These results are the most precise to date, and the antineutrino result is the first cross section measurement of this channel. They are compared with various theoretical predictions. The impact on evaluation of backgrounds to searches for supernova relic neutrinos at present and future water Cherenkov detectors is also discussed.
