Development of structural-composite reflector panels for a submillimeter space telescope

Reflector panels for the Large Deployable Reflector (LDR) for a 20m, Earth-orbiting, submillimeter and infrared telescope were designed. The panels must be 1 to 2 m in diameter with surface precision and thermal stability of a few microns, and an areal density of or = 10 kg/sqm. Using a combination of design, analytical modeling, panel fabrication, and testing, two sizes of graphite/epoxy panels were produced. One is 15 sqcm the other 60 sqcm, both weighing 5 to 7 kg/sqm with manufactured surface accuracies of a few tenths of a micron and thermal stability at LDR orbital temperatures of a few microns.

Integrated Thermal-structural-electromagnetic Design Optimization of Large Space Antenna Reflectors

The requirements for low mass and high electromagnetic (EM) performance in large, flexible space antenna structures is motivating the development of a systematic procedure for antenna design. In contrast to previous work which concentrated on reducing rms distortions of the reflector surface, thereby indirectly increasing antenna performance, the current work involves a direct approach to increasing electromagnetic performance using mathematical optimization. The thermal, structural, and EM analyses are fully integrated in the context of an optimization procedure, and consequently, the interaction of the various responses is accounted for directly and automatically. Preliminary results are presented for sizing cross-sectional areas of a tetrahedral truss reflector. The results indicate potential for this integrated procedure from the standpoint of mass reduction, performance increase, and efficiency of the design process.

Compensation for Primary Reflector Wavefront Error

The object of the invention is to compensate for errors in a large telescope primary reflector by making certain compensating deviations in a smaller, auxiliary reflector of the telescope. At least one intermediate element forms an image of the primary surface onto the secondary surface, so each point on the secondary surface corresponds to a point on the primary surface. The secondary surface is formed with a deviation from an ideal secondary surface, with the piston distance of each point on the actual secondary surface equal to the piston distance of a corresponding piston on the actual primary surface from the ideal primary surface. It is found that this results in electromagnetic (e.g., light) rays which strike a deviating area of the actual primary surface being brought to the same focus as if the actual primary surface did not have a diviation from an ideal primary surface.

Directivity optimization of a reflector antenna with cluster feeds - A closed-form solution

The directivity of a reflector antenna deteriorates as the feed moves away from the focal point for beam scanning. This deterioration can be substantially reduced if a cluster feed instead of single feed is used to control a beam. A closed-form solution is presented for the cluster excitation to achieve the optimum directivity. For an offset 108 lambda parabolic reflector scanning 10 beamwidths, the optimum directivity achieved by a 19-element (seven-element) cluster is 12 dB (8 dB) higher than that of a single element. Comparison of the optimum-directivity design and the popular conjugate field matching design is made. When the cluster spacing d is greater than 1 lambda, it is found that the optimum directivity is higher than that of conjugate field matching (CFM) scheme by an insignificant amount, although the excitations of two designs can be quite different. For d less than 0.5 lambda, the optimum design may exhibit the supergain phenomenon, namely extremely high directivities achieved by an oscillatory cluster excitation.

Microwave holography of large reflector antennas - Simulation algorithms

The performance of large reflector antennas can be improved by identifying the location and amount of their surface distortions and correcting them. To determine the accuracy of the constructed surface profiles, simulation studies are used to incorporate both the effects of systematic and random distortions, particularly the effects of the displaced surface panels. In this paper, different simulation models are investigated, emphasizing a model based on the vector diffraction analysis of a curved reflector with displaced panels. The simulated far-field patterns are then used to reconstruct the location and amount of displacement of the surface panels by employing a fast Fourier transform/iterative procedure. The sensitivity of the microwave holography technique based on the number of far-field sampled points, level of distortions, polarizations, illumination tapers, etc., is also examined.

Reflector sidelobe degradation due to random surface errors

It is well known that the sidelobe structure of a reflector antenna is highly susceptible to random surface errors, and that in most applications it is not adequate to investigate only the average behavior of the antenna. In this study, an attempt is made to determine the probability distribution of the sidelobe level of a reflector antenna subject to some random surface errors. Specifically, the random pattern function is considered and its sidelobe level studied using the level-upcrossing theory. Both the degradation of the maximum sidelobe and the degradation of the sidelobe region with respect to an International Radio Consultative Committee (CCIR) sidelobe envelope are obtained. The theoretical results are found in excellent agreement with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, some useful tolerance charts are presented.

Analysis of a Four-Reflector S/X-Band Antenna

Physical optics accounts for near field, cross polarization, and higher-order modes. Report presents physical-optics analysis of four-reflector, 64-m antennas of Deep Space Network. Analysis thorough and detailed. Report has instructional value as example for designers of large microwave dishes with subreflectors and involving reflector surfaces with hyperboloidal, paraboloidal, ellipsoidal, and more complex shapes.

The large deployable reflector: A NASA submillimeter-infrared orbiting observatory

The Large Deployable Reflector (LDR) concept is outlined. The LDR telescope is based on a 20-m diameter reflector. The primary mirror is a filled aperture made up of 84 hexagonal panels, each 2 m edge-to-edge. The panels are based on lightweight structural composite materials. The optical configuration is a four mirror two stage system. The primary mirror is passive. The active optical elements for figure control are at the quaternary mirror. The primary mirror panels are supported by a deployable PAC truss backup structure at the vertices of each hexagon. The four focal plane instruments covering the range of 30 to 1000 microns are located near the vertex of the primary mirror. Some instruments will be cooled with stored cryogens to liquid helium temperatures, others to liquid nitrogen temperatures. The spacecraft functions will be located in a resource module behind the primary mirror. The LDR will be transferred to orbit by the space transportation system and assembled and tested at the space station. It will then be boosted to an orbit of greater than or = 700 km as a free flyer.

Detection of reflector surface error from near-field data: Effect of edge diffracted field

The surface accuracy of large reflector antennas must be maintained within certain tolerances if high gain/low sidelobe performance is to be achieved. Thus the measurement of the surface profile is an important part of the quality control procedure when constructing antennas of this type. An efficient method for surface profile measurement has been proposed, i.e., the reflector surface is calculated from the measured near-field phase data using the theory of geometric optics. For a surface profile calculation of this kind, it is necessary to know the margin of error built into the method of calculation. This will enable a specification of the tolerance from which the surface profile can be determined. When calculating the surface profile from near-field phase data, there are two main sources of error. The first is the measurement error in near-field phase data. The second arises from the edge diffracted fields that are superimposed on the reflected fields in the measured near-field data. The error in the calculated surface profile produced by the edge diffracted fields is examined.

Source-specular-reflector-sensor solid angles

A formula is derived that describes the size of the solid angle within which must be the normal to a flat specular reflector, if such a reflector is to redirect light from a small but finite extended source to a small but finite extended detector. The formula assumes the rules of geometrical optics and does not account for the effects of diffraction.

A simplified approach to axisymmetric dual-reflector antenna design

A procedure is described for designing dual reflector antennas. The analysis is developed by taking each reflector to be the envelope of its tangent planes. Rather than specifying the phase distribution in the emitted beam, the slopes of the emitted rays were specified. Thus, both the output wave shape and angular distribution of intensity can be specified. Computed examples include variations from both Cassegrain and Gregorian systems, permitting deviation from uniform source distributions and from parallel beam property of conventional systems.

The integration of a mesh reflector to a 15-foot box truss structure. Task 3: Box truss analysis and technology development

To demonstrate the design and integration of a reflective mesh surface to a deployable truss structure, a mesh reflector was installed on a 15 foot box truss cube. The specific features demonstrated include: (1) sewing seams in reflective mesh; (2) mesh stretching to desired preload; (3) installation of surface tie cords; (4) installation of reflective surface on truss; (5) setting of reflective surface; (6) verification of surface shape/accuracy; (7) storage and deployment; (8) repeatability of reflector surface; and (9) comparison of surface with predicted shape using analytical methods developed under a previous task.

Large deployable reflector thermal characteristics in low earth orbits

Preliminary results are presented from the development of a thermal analytical tool capable of analyzing the orbital thermal characteristics of a Large Deployable Reflector (LDR) spaceborne astronomical instrument for observations in the 30-micron to 1-mm range. This LDR thermal analytical tool is a 9X6-node reflector thermal model to be used in conjunction with the thermal analyzer program SINDA, as well as the orbital heat flux program TRASYS for the computation of solar and IR radiation and orbit-related input data.

Dihedral corner reflector backscatter using higher order reflections and diffractions

The uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) plus an imposed edge diffraction extension is used to predict the backscatter cross sections of dihedral corner reflectors which have right, obtuse, and acute included angles. The UTD allows individual backscattering mechanisms of the dihedral corner reflectors to be identified and provides good agreement with experimental cross-section measurements in the azimuthal plane. Multiply reflected and diffracted fields of up to third-order are included in the analysis for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. The coefficients of the uniform theory of diffraction revert to those of the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) in far-field cross-section analyses, but finite cross sections can be obtained everywhere by considering mutual cancellation of diffractions from parallel edges. Analytic calculations are performed using UTD coefficients; hence the accuracy required in angular measurements is more critical as the distance increases. The common far-field approximation that all rays to the observation point are parallel is too gross an approxiation for the angular parameters in the UTD coefficients in the far field.

Interpolation methods for shaped reflector analysis

The diffraction analysis of reflector surfaces which are described only at a discrete set of locations usually leads to the requirement of an interpolation to determine the surface characteristics over a continuum of locations. Two methods of interpolation, the global and the local methods, are presented. The global interpolation representation is a closed-form or series expression valid over the entire surface. The coefficients of a series expression are found by an integration of all of the raw data. Since the number of coefficients used to describe the surface is much smaller than the number of raw data points, the integration effectively provides a smoothing of the raw data. The local interpolation provides a closed-form expression for only a small area of the reflector surface. The subreflector is divided into sectors each of which has constant discretized data. Each area segment is then locally described by a two-dimensional quadratic surface. The second derivative data give the desired smoothed values.

Impacts of particles create paths for corrosion by monatomic oxygen. Report describes experiments to determine effects of monatomic oxygen on reflectors damaged by hard particles. Applies to reflectors for solar dynamic power systems in low orbit around Earth, where neutral monatomic oxygen major constituent of atmosphere. Species highly corrosive and attacks variety of materials.

Reflector antenna distortion compensation by array feeds - An experimental verification

Reflector antennas are subject to surface distortions which may result from thermal or gravitational effects. Surface distortions degrade antenna performance by reducing gain and introducing high sidelobe levels. In the letter, results of an experimental study are presented to demonstrate how effectively a properly excited array feed in the focal plane of the reflector antenna can compensate for the undesirable effects of slowly varying surface distortions. The application of the array compensation concept could prove to be very useful for future large space or ground antennas.

A microstrip array feed for land mobile satellite reflector antennas

A circularly polarized feed array for a spacecraft reflector antenna is described that was constructed by using linearly polarized microstrip elements. The array has seven subarrays which form a single cluster as part of a large overlapping cluster reflector feed array. Each of the seven subarrays consists of four linearly polarized microstrip elements. The array achieved a better than 0.8-dB axial ratio at the array pattern peak and better than 3 dB antenna gain to 20 degrees from the peak, across a 7.5 percent frequency bandwidth. A teardrop-shaped feed probe was used to achieve wideband input impedance matching for the relatively thick microstrip substrate. The low impedance and axial ratio bandwidths were achieved using a relatively thick honeycomb substrate with the impedance-matching feed probes.
