Design of a Direct-Detection Wind and Aerosol Lidar for Mars Orbit

The present knowledge of the Mars atmosphere is greatly limited by a lack of global measurements of winds and aerosols. Hence, measurements of height-resolved wind and aerosol profiles are a priority for new Mars orbiting missions. We have designed a direct-detection lidar (MARLI) to provide global measurements of dust, winds and water ice profiles from Mars orbit. From a 400-km polar orbit, the instrument is designed to provide wind and backscatter measurements with a vertical resolution of 2 km and with resolution of 2° in latitude along track. The instrument uses a single-frequency, seeded Nd:YAG laser that emits 4 mJ pulses at 1064 nm at a 250 Hz pulse rate. The receiver utilizes a 50-cm diameter telescope and a double edge Fabry-Pérot etalon as a frequency discriminator to measure the Doppler shift of the aerosol-backscatter profiles. The receiver also includes a polarization-sensitive channel to detect the cross-polarized backscatter profiles from water ice. The receiver uses a sensitive 4 × 4 pixel HgCdTe avalanche photodiode array as a detector for all signals. Here we describe the measurement concept, instrument design, and calculate its performance for several cases of Mars atmospheric conditions. The calculations show that under a range of atmospheric conditions MARLI is capable of measuring wind speed profiles with random error of 2–4 m/s within the first three scale heights, enabling vertically resolved mapping of transport processes in this important region of the atmosphere.

Lightning discharge identification system

A system for differentiating between cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning discharges is described which includes an electric field antenna that senses the rate of charge of an electric field produced by a lightning discharge. When the signal produced by the electric field exceeds a predetermined threshold, it is fed to a coincidence detector. A VHF antenna is also provided and generates a video signal responsive to a cloud to cloud lightning discharge, and this signal is fed through a level sensor, an inverter, to the coincidence detector simultaneously with the signal from the field detector. When signals from the electric field antenna and the VHF antenna appear at the coincidence detector simultaneously, such indicates that there is a cloud to cloud lightning discharge; whereas, when there is not a signal produced on the VHF antenna simultaneously with a signal produced by the field sensor, then a strike indicator connected to the coincidence detector indicates a cloud to ground lightning discharge.

Preliminary analysis of data from SRI international transient pulse monitor on board P78-2 SCATHA satellite

The satellite charging at high altitudes (SCATHA) program addresses the occurrence of electrostatic discharges causing undesirable effects like deleterious transients in electronic circuits on satellites. The high altitude plasma environment and the effects of the interaction of this environment with the orbiting satellite are studied. The SRI transient pulse monitor (TPM) detects the transient electromagnetic signals induced in selected circuits. As a transient detector the TPM records transient signals, indicates the number of transients observed, and gives peak amplitude of the largest transient during each second's interval. Most of the early data from the TPM contain pulses associated with internal electrical activity and electrostatic charging on the surface of the P78-2 is evidenced. It is found that periods of external discharging do not necessarily coincide with periods in which high potentials are measured on the satellite's surface.

Method and apparatus for receiving and tracking phase modulated signals

An apparatus and technique are described for receiving and tracking analog or digital phase modulated signals from 0 deg to 360 deg phase shift. In order to track a signal with many phases, a detector discerns the phase modulation of the incoming signal and a phase shifter generates a negative phase shift opposite in angle to the detected phase angle. This produces a converted series sideband component barrier signal. The residual carrier signal and the converted series sideband component carrier are added together to produce a tracking carrier signal. The tracking carrier signal is multiplied with the output from a voltage controlled oscillator in the tracking loop to obtain an error signal which drives the voltage controlled oscillator and tracks the incoming signal frequency. The technique is less susceptible to carrier interference which may degrade tracking and tracking may be performed at lower signal to noise ratios and for lower input signal power levels.

Method for ambiguity resolution in range-Doppler measurements

A method for resolving range and Doppler target ambiguities when the target has substantial range or has a high relative velocity in which a first signal is generated and a second signal is also generated which is coherent with the first signal but at a slightly different frequency such that there exists a difference in frequency between these two signals of Delta f(sub t). The first and second signals are converted into a dual-frequency pulsed signal, amplified, and the dual-frequency pulsed signal is transmitted towards a target. A reflected dual-frequency signal is received from the target, amplified, and changed to an intermediate dual-frequency signal. The intermediate dual-frequency signal is amplified, with extracting of a shifted difference frequency Delta f(sub r) from the amplified intermediate dual-frequency signal done by a nonlinear detector. The final step is generating two quadrature signals from the difference frequency Delta f(sub t) and the shifted difference frequency Delta f(sub r) and processing the two quadrature signals to determine range and Doppler information of the target.

Digital phase-locked loop

An digital phase-locked loop is provided for deriving a loop output signal from an accumulator output terminal. A phase detecting exclusive OR gate is fed by the loop digital input and output signals. The output of the phase detector is a bi-level digital signal having a duty cycle indicative of the relative phase of the input and output signals. The accumulator is incremented at a first rate in response to a first output level of the phase detector and at a second rate in response to a second output level of the phase detector.

Lambda baryon production in neutrino-nucleus interactions and light signals reconstruction in the Short-Baseline Near Detector

The field of neutrino physics is nowadays entering the era of precision measurements, with new detectors capable of capturing neutrino interactions with unprecedented detail and high intensity neutrino beams. Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) have become one of the main neutrino detection technologies, providing excellent imaging capabilities and particle identification. The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at Fermilab is a LArTPC experiment designed to capture neutrinos from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB). Its proximity to the beam target (110\,m) and large size (112\,ton) enable the recording of millions of neutrino interactions annually. SBND provides the highest statistics worldwide for neutrino-argon cross-section measurements, facilitating the study of rare channels like Cabibbo-suppressed quasielastic hyperon production. Specifically, this thesis focuses on neutral $\Lambda$ baryon production for which only tens of events have been observed up to date. Our work introduces a novel selection strategy leveraging LArTPC imaging capabilities to identify the distinctive decay signatures of $\Lambda$ baryons, enhancing sensitivity to this channel. Besides being a very mature technology, LArTPCs are an evolving technology. Part of the focus of the new developments lies in harnessing the potential of scintillation light signals. The Photon Detection System (PDS) in SBND has been designed to provide an efficient detection of the scintillation light, representing a major R\&D opportunity in the LArTPC community. Its design provides a high and more uniform light yield, an excellent timing resolution and an independent 3D reconstruction of the events, including the drift coordinate, using exclusively the light signals. This work presents the first comprehensive study of the SBND PDS capabilities. The new developments in the simulation and reconstruction of the light signals in SBND are presented. The whole chain is applied to accurately tag neutrino events through timing information, with a predicted resolution $\mathcal{O}$(2\,ns), and ultimately retrieve the pulse structure of the BNB.

Radiant Temperature Nulling Radiometer

A self-calibrating nulling radiometer for non-contact temperature measurement of an object, such as a body of water, employs a black body source as a temperature reference, an optomechanical mechanism, e.g., a chopper, to switch back and forth between measuring the temperature of the black body source and that of a test source, and an infrared detection technique. The radiometer functions by measuring radiance of both the test and the reference black body sources; adjusting the temperature of the reference black body so that its radiance is equivalent to the test source; and, measuring the temperature of the reference black body at this point using a precision contact-type temperature sensor, to determine the radiative temperature of the test source. The radiation from both sources is detected by an infrared detector that converts the detected radiation to an electrical signal that is fed with a chopper reference signal to an error signal generator, such as a synchronous detector, that creates a precision rectified signal that is approximately proportional to the difference between the temperature of the reference black body and that of the test infrared source. This error signal is then used in a feedback loop to adjust the reference black body temperature until it equals that of the test source, at which point the error signal is nulled to zero. The chopper mechanism operates at one or more Hertz allowing minimization of l/f noise. It also provides pure chopping between the black body and the test source and allows continuous measurements.

Automatic carrier acquisition system

An automatic carrier acquisition system for a phase locked loop (PLL) receiver is disclosed. It includes a local oscillator, which sweeps the receiver to tune across the carrier frequency uncertainty range until the carrier crosses the receiver IF reference. Such crossing is detected by an automatic acquisition detector. It receives the IF signal from the receiver as well as the IF reference. It includes a pair of multipliers which multiply the IF signal with the IF reference in phase and in quadrature. The outputs of the multipliers are filtered through bandpass filters and power detected. The output of the power detector has a signal dc component which is optimized with respect to the noise dc level by the selection of the time constants of the filters as a function of the sweep rate of the local oscillator.

Physics-inspired spatiotemporal-graph AI ensemble for the detection of higher order wave mode signals of spinning binary black hole mergers

We present a new class of AI models for the detection of quasi-circular, spinning, non-precessing binary black hole mergers whose waveforms include the higher order gravitational wave modes ($\ell$, |m|) = {(2,2), (2,1), (3,3), (3,2), (4,4)}, and mode mixing effects in the $\ell$ = 3, |m| = 2 harmonics. These AI models combine hybrid dilated convolution neural networks to accurately model both short- and long-range temporal sequential information of gravitational waves; and graph neural networks to capture spatial correlations among gravitational wave observatories to consistently describe and identify the presence of a signal in a three detector network encompassing the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors. We first trained these spatiotemporal-graph AI models using synthetic noise, using 1.2 million modeled waveforms to densely sample this signal manifold, within 1.7 h using 256 NVIDIA A100 GPUs in the Polaris supercomputer at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility. This distributed training approach exhibited optimal classification performance, and strong scaling up to 512 NVIDIA A100 GPUs. With these AI ensembles we processed data from a three detector network, and found that an ensemble of 4 AI models achieves state-of-the-art performance for signal detection, and reports two misclassifications for every decade of searched data. We distributed AI inference over 128 GPUs in the Polaris supercomputer and 128 nodes in the Theta supercomputer, and completed the processing of a decade of gravitational wave data from a three detector network within 3.5 h. Finally, we fine-tuned these AI ensembles to process the entire month of February 2020, which is part of the O3b LIGO/Virgo observation run, and found 6 gravitational waves, concurrently identified in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data, and zero false positives. This analysis was completed in one hour using one NVIDIA A100 GPU.

Detecting boosted dark photons with gaseous detectors

We search for indirect signals of O ( keV ) dark matter annihilating or decaying into O ( eV ) dark photons. These dark photons will be highly boosted, predominantly transversely polarized, have decay lengths larger than the Milky Way, and can be absorbed by neutrino or dark matter experiments at a rate dependent on the photon-dark photon kinetic mixing parameter and the optical properties of the experiment. We show that current experiments cannot probe new parameter space, but future large-scale gaseous detectors with low backgrounds (i.e., CYGNUS, NEXT, PANDAX-III) may be sensitive to this signal when the annihilation cross section is especially large. Doppler radar having phase modulation of both transmitted and reflected return signals

A microwave radar signal is generated for transmission through an antenna. Before transmission, the signal is phase modulated by 0 deg or 90 deg amounts during each alternate half-cycles of an intermediate frequency (IF) clock signal. After transmission and return, the signal is again phase modulated the same amounts during each alternate half-cycles. The return phase modulated signal is mixed with a leakage signal component of the microwave signal, leaving an IF Doppler. The IF Doppler signal may then be amplified, removing any requirement that direct current level signals be amplified and also removing the effect of detector noise from the Doppler signal.
