Structural dynamic characteristics of a Space Station Freedom first assembly flight concept

A study has been conducted of the dynamic characteristics of the first flight of NASA's Space Station Freedom and its response to a typical preboost excitation; the FEM model of the structure used encompasses 88 flexible modes below 5 Hz. The low frequency modes of the system are noted to have been dominated by the relatively low stiffness of such components as the photovoltaic arrays, thermal radiators, and alpha joint. The spacecraft backbone-forming truss was stiffer, exhibiting no deformation below 3 Hz. Reboost forcing-function response was moderate.

Experiments in structural dynamics and control using a grid

Future spacecraft are being conceived that are highly flexible and of extreme size. The two features of flexibility and size pose new problems in control system design. Since large scale structures are not testable in ground based facilities, the decision on component placement must be made prior to full-scale tests on the spacecraft. Control law research is directed at solving problems of inadequate modelling knowledge prior to operation required to achieve peak performance. Another crucial problem addressed is accommodating failures in systems with smart components that are physically distributed on highly flexible structures. Parameter adaptive control is a method of promise that provides on-orbit tuning of the control system to improve performance by upgrading the mathematical model of the spacecraft during operation. Two specific questions are answered in this work. They are: What limits does on-line parameter identification with realistic sensors and actuators place on the ultimate achievable performance of a system in the highly flexible environment? Also, how well must the mathematical model used in on-board analytic redundancy be known and what are the reasonable expectations for advanced redundancy management schemes in the highly flexible and distributed component environment?

Structural dynamic interaction with solar tracking control for evolutionary Space Station concepts

The paper addresses the sun tracking control system design of the Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ) and the interaction of the control system with the flexible structure of Space Station Freedom (SSF) evolutionary concepts. The significant components of the Space Station pertaining to the SARJ control are described, and the tracking control system design is presented. Finite element models representing two evolutionary concepts, Enhanced Operations Capability (EOC) and Extended Operations Capability (XOC), are employed to evaluate the influence of low frequency flexible structure on the control system design and performance. The design variables of the control system are synthesized using a constrained optimization technique to meet design requirements, to provide a given level of control system stability margin, and to achieve the most responsive tracking performance. The resulting SARJ control system design and performance of the EOC and XOC configurations are presented and compared to those of the SSF configuration.

Methods for evaluating the predictive accuracy of structural dynamic models

Modeling uncertainty is defined in terms of the difference between predicted and measured eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Data compiled from 22 sets of analysis/test results was used to create statistical databases for large truss-type space structures and both pretest and posttest models of conventional satellite-type space structures. Modeling uncertainty is propagated through the model to produce intervals of uncertainty on frequency response functions, both amplitude and phase. This methodology was used successfully to evaluate the predictive accuracy of several structures, including the NASA CSI Evolutionary Structure tested at Langley Research Center. Test measurements for this structure were within + one-sigma intervals of predicted accuracy for the most part, demonstrating the validity of the methodology and computer code.

Structural dynamics at cytosolic interprotomer interfaces control gating of a mammalian TRPM5 channel

The transient receptor potential melastatin (TRPM) tetrameric cation channels are involved in a wide range of biological functions, from temperature sensing and taste transduction to regulation of cardiac function, inflammatory pain, and insulin secretion. The structurally conserved TRPM cytoplasmic domains make up >70 % of the total protein. To investigate the mechanism by which the TRPM cytoplasmic domains contribute to gating, we employed electrophysiology and cryo-EM to study TRPM5—a channel that primarily relies on activation via intracellular Ca 2+ . Here, we show that activation of mammalian TRPM5 channels is strongly altered by Ca 2+ -dependent desensitization. Structures of rat TRPM5 identify a series of conformational transitions triggered by Ca 2+ binding, whereby formation and dissolution of cytoplasmic interprotomer interfaces appear to control activation and desensitization of the channel. This study shows the importance of the cytoplasmic assembly in TRPM5 channel function and sets the stage for future investigations of other members of the TRPM family.

Some applicatiaons of Lanczos vectors in structural dynamics

This paper summarizes several applications of Lanczos vectors and Krylov vectors. Lanczos vectors or Krylov vectors for use in component synthesis, Lanczos vectors for systems with unsymmetric damping (unsymmetric Block-Lanczos method), and the use of Lanczos vectors to obtain reduced-order models for control of flexible structures. For each of the above applications the theoretical background is briefly summarized and a numerical example is given.

Voyager radio occultation by the Uranian rings: Structure, dynamics, and particle sizes

Diffraction of Voyager 2's 3.6 and 13 cm wavelength microwaves by the Uranian rings is removed through an inverse Fresnel transform filtering procedure that accommodates the significant eccentricity of the rings. Resulting 50 m resolution profiles at two observation longitudes: (1) reveal remarkably detailed and longitudinally varying structure, (2) provide eccentricity gradient profiles of Rings alpha, beta, and epsilon which bring into question current theoretical models for observed rigid precession, and (3) suggest that two possible unseen satellites may confine some of the very sharp edges observed via resonant interactions.

Use of networked workstations for parallel nonlinear structural dynamic simulations of rotating bladed-disk assemblies

The principal objective of this research is to investigate, develop and demonstrate coarse-grained, parallel-processing strategies for nonlinear dynamic simulations for rotating bladed-disk assemblies. The parallel -processing strategies addressed include numerical algorithms for parallel nonlinear solutions and techniques to effect load balancing among processors. The parallel environment employed is a distributed-memory, coarse-grained one consisting of networked workstations. A parallel explicit time integration method has been implemented for transient nonlinear solutions of rotationg bladed-disk assemblies. Automatic domain partitioning techniques have been investigated for load balancing among processors. Advanced computing environments, data structures and interactive computer graphics all contribute to an integrated parallel finite element analysis system to facilitate more efficient and powerful dynamic simulations.

On-orbit structural dynamic performance of a low-frequency microwave radiometer for Mission to Planet Earth applications

The present paper addresses the on-orbit dynamic performance of a low-frequency microwave radiometer for earth science applications. The radiometer is one of the earth-observing instruments aboard a geostationary platform proposed as part of the Mission to Planet Earth. The paper includes establishing the structural requirements of the antenna, developing the structural and disturbance models, performing modal and forced response analyses, and evaluating the resulting distortions in terms of the antenna's ability to meet stringent structural performance requirements. Two antenna configurations are discussed: free-flying and platform-mounted. These configurations are analyzed for a representative disturbance function which simulates rotation of the subreflector in order to perform a raster-type scan of the earth disk. Results show that the scanning maneuver modeled did not induce antenna performance errors which were outside their estimated limits.

Investigation of SSME alternate high pressure fuel turbopump lift-off seal fluid and structural dynamic interaction

The Space Shuttle main engine (SSME) alternate turbopump development program (ATD) high pressure fuel turbopump (HPFTP) design utilizes an innovative lift-off seal (LOS) design that is located in close proximity to the turbine end bearing. Cooling flow exiting the bearing passes through the lift-off seal during steady state operation. The potential for fluid excitation of lift-off seal structural resonances is investigated. No fluid excitation of LOS resonances is predicted. However, if predicted LOS natural frequencies are significantly lowered by the presence of the coolant, pressure oscillations caused by synchronous whirl of the HPFTP rotor may excite a resonance.

Electro-impulse deicing - Structural dynamic studies, icing tunnel tests and applications

This paper contains a discussion of the comparison of analytical and experimental results of the dynamic response of a flat rectangular plate subjected to electro-impulse type deicing forces. Early attempts in this correlation have been hampered by the complex leading edge geometries of the airfoils tested to date. The lack of a suitable analytical model for a typical leading edge structure has prompted these preliminary investigations of simple geometries, beginning with a flat plate and to be followed by a semi-cylindrical leading edge representation. The comparisons reported herein are thus limited to rectangular plate models. Project plans and icing tunnel results are given.

Dynamic and Structural Gas Turbine Engine Modeling

Model the interactions between the structural dynamics and the performance dynamics of a gas turbine engine. Generally these two aspects are considered separate, unrelated phenomena and are studied independently. For diagnostic purposes, it is desirable to bring together as much information as possible, and that involves understanding how performance is affected by structural dynamics (if it is) and vice versa. This can involve the relationship between thrust response and the excitation of structural modes, for instance. The job will involve investigating and characterizing these dynamical relationships, generating a model that incorporates them, and suggesting and/or developing diagnostic and prognostic techniques that can be incorporated in a data fusion system. If no coupling is found, at the least a vibration model should be generated that can be used for diagnostics and prognostics related to blade loss, for instance.

The impact of remote manipulator structural dynamics on Shuttle on-orbit flight control

The performance of the Space Shuttle on-orbit flight control system during payload operations with the remote manipulator system is described. The changing mass and inertia distribution associated with payload manipulation can have a significant effect on the control authority provided by the orbiter's reaction control jets. Commanded payload motion and jet firings can excite significant flexure in the orbiter/manipulator/payload structure. These effects combine to stress the control capabilities of the flight control system. Data from recent flight tests is presented to illustrate these effects.

Structural Dynamics Modeling of HIRENASD in Support of the Aeroelastic Prediction Workshop

An Aeroelastic Prediction Workshop (AePW) was held in April 2012 using three aeroelasticity case study wind tunnel tests for assessing the capabilities of various codes in making aeroelasticity predictions. One of these case studies was known as the HIRENASD model that was tested in the European Transonic Wind Tunnel (ETW). This paper summarizes the development of a standardized enhanced analytical HIRENASD structural model for use in the AePW effort. The modifications to the HIRENASD finite element model were validated by comparing modal frequencies, evaluating modal assurance criteria, comparing leading edge, trailing edge and twist of the wing with experiment and by performing steady and unsteady CFD analyses for one of the test conditions on the same grid, and identical processing of results.

Structural dynamics and attitude control study of early manned capability space station configurations

A study was performed to determine the vibration and attitude control characteristics of critical space station configurations featuring early manned capability during buildup from initial user support through the operations capability reference station. Five configurations were selected and were examined thus determining the changes that are likely to occur in the characteristics of the system as the station progresses from a single boom structure to a mature, dual keel, operations capability reference station. Both 9 foot and 5 meter truss bay sizes were investigated. All configurations analyzed were stable; however, the 5 meter truss bay size structure exhibited superior stability characteristics.

Rocket/launcher structural dynamics

The equations of motion describing the interactions between a rocket and a launcher were derived using Lagrange's Equation. A rocket launching was simulated. The motions of both the rocket and the launcher can be considered in detail. The model contains flexible elements and rigid elements. The rigid elements (masses) were judiciously utilized to simplify the derivation of the equations. The advantages of simultaneous shoe release were illustrated. Also, the loading history of the interstage structure of a boosted configuration was determined. The equations shown in this analysis could be used as a design tool during the modification of old launchers and the design of new launchers.
