Off-Road Vehicle Energy-Saving Potential

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Vehicle Technology Office (VTO) has played a critical role in enabling electrification and reducing fuel consumption in the automotive sector. However, the off-road vehicle sector accounts for 8% of transportation fuel, and that share is likely to increase over time as onroad vehicles move towards electrification. DOE can again play a key role in the off-road vehicle market by providing tools that can be used by academia and the industry to evaluate the impact of advanced technologies. The need for a pre-competitive simulation tool was also identified during a 2019 DOE-led workshop at Argonne National Laboratory that included OEMs and suppliers to this market. Autonomie, a powerful and robust system simulation tool for vehicle energy consumption and performance analysis, was developed by Argonne National Laboratory in collaboration with General Motors. Its application covers energy consumption and performance analysis throughout the entire vehicle development process by leveraging its plug-and-play powertrain and vehicle model architecture and development environment

Estimating Fresh Water Needs to Meet Future Thermoelectric Generation Requirements and Program Water Saving Benefits (2022 Update)

Freshwater availability is operationally critical for thermoelectric power plants. Trends indicating a growing population, along with increasing threats stemming from the changing climate could possibly set off water scarcity issues for U.S. thermoelectric generation in scarcity-prone regions in the country. This report is an update to a previous water needs analysis which was conducted in 2020 by the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL).

Wearable robotics could save the day (and your back)

How can a lightweight back-assisted exosuit help material handlers decrease back strain from repetitive lifting tasks? What are the benefits of a passive robotic shoulder support in reducing fatigue and injury for environmental cleanup workers? How can mechanical devices reduce joint and muscle injuries in a manufacturing environment? These are some of the questions a group of Laboratory engineers are asking in their ongoing quest to identify and evaluate specially designed wearable advanced technologies to assist workers and help keep them safe.

Savings in Action: Lessons Learned from a Vermont Community with Solar Plus Storage

As the U.S. works to meet emissions reduction goals and modernize power sector operations, residential buildings - which account for 21% of the total U.S. electricity consumption - will play a key role. Residential buildings with energy efficiency and distributed energy resources are able to provide value to multiple stakeholders, including the occupant, utility, and society at large. To account for this, multiple metrics that capture the value each stakeholder gets are required. This report contains analysis of a unique solar plus storage community in Vermont, including the calculation of multiple metrics and a unique "score card" that succinctly captures all of the value in a single figure.

End-Use Savings Shapes Measure Documentation: Electric Cooking Equipment

Building on the successfully completed effort to calibrate and validate the U.S. Department of Energy’s ResStock™ and ComStock™ models over the past three years, the objective of this work is to produce national datasets that empower analysts working for federal, state, utility, city, and manufacturer stakeholders to answer a broad range of analysis questions. The goal of this work is to develop energy efficiency, electrification, and demand flexibility end-use load shapes (electricity, gas, propane, or fuel oil) that cover most of the high-impact, market-ready (or nearly market-ready) measures. “Measures” refers to energy efficiency variables that can be applied to buildings during modeling.

Lifetime Energy Savings Via Advanced Manufacturing of Low Density Steels for Transportation Applications

The purpose of this “Low Density Steels for Transportation Applications” project was to develop an alloy composition and processing parameters that would result in a material suitable for use in automotive structural components at a reduced density over the current advanced high strength steel (AHSS) materials used. The project work successfully developed a robust alloy capable of exceeding project mechanical property targets at each stage of development, with an 8% density reduction over benchmark AHSS materials (7.8 g/cm3). The developed alloy has the potential to offer significant vehicle lightweighting and improved fuel economy, without sacrificing the increased passenger safety of more traditional AHSS. Through the three tasks of the project, (1) Alloy design and small-scale laboratory evaluation, (2) Laboratory development of hot rolled material and (3) Laboratory development of a cold rolled material, the laboratory work utilized advanced characterization and analytical methods on novel alloy compositions subjected to both conventional and non-conventional processing operations.
