Relief Valve Opens And Closes Quickly

Relief valve opens quickly to relieve excess pressure and closes quickly when pressure drops slightly below relief pressure. O-ring exposes one or more ports under high pressure, releasing excess pressurized fluid. Adjusting screw used to change compression on Belleville-spring washers and to set pressure at which valve opens. Designed for use aboard Space Shuttle to vent pressurized hydrazine to vacuum, valve concept useful in industrial applications where rapid opening, rapid closing, or low susceptibility to blockage by vented fluid required.

Calculation of the distributed loads on the blades of individual multiblade propellers in axial flow using linear and nonlinear lifting surface theories

In recent years much attention has been given to the development of methods and programs for the calculation of the aerodynamic characteristics of multiblade, saber-shaped air propellers. Most existing methods are based on the theory of lifting lines. Elsewhere, the theory of a lifting surface is used to calculate screw and lifting propellers. In this work, methods of discrete eddies are described for the calculation of the aerodynamic characteristics of propellers using the linear and nonlinear theories of lifting surfaces.

Welding torch gas cup extension

The invention relates to a gas shielded electric arc welding torch having a detachable gas cup extension which may be of any desired configuration or length. The gas cup extension assembly is mounted on a standard electric welding torch gas cup to enable welding in areas with limited access. The gas cup assembly has an upper tubular insert that fits within the gas cup such that its lower portion protrudes thereform and has a lower tubular extension that is screwed into the lower portion. The extension has a rim to define the outer perimeter of the seat edge about its entrance opening so a gasket may be placed to effect an airtight seal between the gas cup and extension. The tubular extension may be made of metal or cermaic material that can be machined. The novelty lies in the use of an extension assembly for a standard gas cup of an electric arc welding torch which extension assembly is detachable permitting the use of a number of extensions which may be of different configurations and materials and yet fit the standard gas cup.

Hand trigger system for bi-lateral gripping control in teleoperation

A device for human operator control of a robotic gripper has been developed and preliminary evaluation has been performed. The JPL Force Reflecting Hand Trigger system features an instrumented index finger trigger with load cell detection of finger force, a servo-controlled, lead-screw-driven backdrive capability by which the trigger's position can be made to follow that of the remotely controlled gripper, and a novel feedback mechanism by which clamping force or some other signal can be fed back by a swiveling motion, also servo-controlled, of the trigger surface (force reflection). This system has undergone preliminary testing in which the amount of force reflection is varied and dynamic force-tracking response is observed.

Performance of a small centrifugal pump in He I and He II

The performance characteristics of a small centrifugal pump in He I and He II are determined over the temperature range of 1.6 to 4.2 K. The single-stage pump is powered by a close-coupled cryogenic induction motor. In the absence of cavitation, pump performance (head and capacity) was found to be identical for He I and He II. Developed heads up to 16 m and capacities of up to 900 liters/hr are obtained at 7000 rpm. A three-blade screw inducer was shown to require much less suction head than a six-blade propeller inducer.

Protein crystal growth in low gravity

The solubility and growth of the protein canavalin, and the application of the schlieren technique to study fluid flow in protein crystal growth systems were investigated. These studies have resulted in the proposal of a model to describe protein crystal growth and the preliminary plans for a long-term space flight experiment. Canavalin, which may be crystallized from a basic solution by the addition of hydrogen (H+) ions, was shown to have normal solubility characteristics over the range of temperatures (5 to 25 C) and pH (5 to 7.5) studies. The solubility data combined with growth rate data gathered from the seeded growth of canavalin crystals indicated that the growth rate limiting step is a screw dislocation mechanism. A schlieren apparatus was constructed and flow patterns were observed in Rochelle salt (sodium potassium tartrate), lysozyme, and canavalin. The critical parameters were identified as the change in density with concentration (dp/dc) and the change in index of refraction with concentration (dn/dc). Some of these values were measured for the materials listed. The data for lyrozyme showed non-linearities in plots of optical properties and density vs. concentration. In conjunction with with W. A. Tiller, a model based on colloid stability theory was proposed to describe protein crystallization. The model was used to explain observations made by ourselves and others. The results of this research has lead to the development for a preliminary design for a long-term, low-g experiment. The proposed apparatus is univeral and capable of operation under microprocessor control.

An FTIR spectrometer for remote measurements of atmospheric composition

The JPL IV interferometer, and infrared Michelson interferometer, was built specifically for recording high resolution solar absorption spectra from remote ground-based sites, aircraft and from stratospheric balloons. The instrument is double-passed, with one fixed and one moving corner reflector, allowing up to 200-cm of optical path difference (corresponding to an unapodised spectral resolution of 0.003/cm). The carriage which holds the moving reflector is driven by a flexible nut riding on a lead screw. This arrangement, together with the double-passed optical scheme, makes the instrument resistant to the effects of mechanical distortion and shock. The spectral range of the instrument is covered by two liquid nitrogen-cooled detectors: an InSb photodiode is used for the shorter wavelengths (1.85 to 5.5 microns, 1,800 to 5,500/cm) and a HgCdTe photoconductor for the range (5.5 to 15 microns, 650 to 1,800/cm). For a single spectrum of 0.01/cm resolution, which requires a scan time of 105 seconds, the signal/noise ratio is typically 800:1 over the entire wavelength range.

Focus drive mechanism for the International Ultraviolet Explorer

The mechanical design of the compact and robust focus drive apparatus developed for the IUE's scientific instrumentation is based on a novel planetary drive that converts the angular increments of a permanent magnet stepping motor into simultaneous linear displacements of three ball screws supporting the secondary mirror. Significant torque margins are thus produced while yielding exceptionally smooth and reliable operation. Attention is given to mechanical drive materials-selection criteria.

Post Clamp With Attached Collar

New clamp for optical posts reduces time required to set up optical components. Joins pair of perpendicular posts supporting laser, lens, reflector, or other optical component and enables posts to be rotated in perpendicular planes so orientation and position of component adjusted. Advantage of clamp conferred by its E-type retaining rings, which hold post-clamp collars to post-clamp body. Collar tightens around post to prevent movement along post while allowing clamp to turn around post. Quarter-turn screws on body and collars tighten parts on post. Does not tend to mar post.

Apparent activation volume for creep of copper and alpha brass at intermediate temperatures

Experimental measurements of the apparent activation volume for creep, V-asterisk, of Cu and Cu-30 pct Zn conducted at intermediate temperatures showed two types of strain dependencies. At the lower temperatures and higher stresses, V-asterisk decreased with increasing creep strain, while at higher temperatures and lower stresses, V-asterisk was essentially independent of strain. The low temperature-high stress behavior for Cu and Cu-30 pct Zn was found to be consistent with the dominance of a dislocation intersection mechanism. The high temperature-low stress data for the pure metals suggest that the rate-controlling process involves the nonconservative motion of jogs on screw dislocations. For the latter conditions, an additional contribution from solute drag-limited dislocation glide also appears to be important in governing the creep behavior of the alloy.

Growth rate study of canavalin single crystals

The dependence on supersaturation of the growth rate of single crystals of the protein canavalin is studied. In the supersaturation ranges studied, the rate-limiting step for growth is best described by a screw dislocation mechanism associated with interface attachment kinetics. Using a ln-ln plot, the growth-rate data is found to fit a predictive relationship of the form G = 0.012 x the supersaturation to the 6.66, which, together with the solubility curves, allows the growth rate to be estimated under a variety of conditions.
