Electron-impact excitation of the Cameron system (a(3)pi yields x(1) Sigma) transition of CO

The results of experimental observations of the Cameron bands of CO produced by electron impacts with CO and CO2 are presented, noting that the bands have been detected in the atmospheres of both Mars and Venus. The study was initiated to account for Conway's (1981) data that the Martian airglow displayed cross-sectional dissociative excitation of the Cameron bands seven time larger than laboratory measurements by Ajello (1971). Spectrometer measurements were obtained of processes occurring in a chamber filled with CO or CO2 gas being bombarded by an electron beam. A value three times higher than the previous lab oratory estimate was obtained. Reasons for the discrepancy are discussed, including a present factor of two error in laboratory estimates.

Analysis of normalized radar cross section (sigma-O) signature of Amazon rain forest using SEASAT scatterometer data

The normalized radar cross section (NRCS) signature of the Amazon rain forest was SEASAT scatterometer data. Statistics of the measured (NRCS) values were determined from multiple orbit passes for three local time periods. Plots of mean normalized radar cross section, dB against incidence angle as a function of beam and polarization show that less than 0.3 dB relative bias exists between all beams over a range of incidence angle from 30 deg to 53 deg. The backscattered measurements analyzed show the Amazon rain forest to be relatively homogeneous, azimuthally isotropic and insensitive to polarization. The return from the rain forest target appears relatively consistent and stable, except for the small diurnal variation (0.75 dB) that occurs at sunrise. Because of the relative stability of the rain forest target and the scatterometer instrument, the response of versus incidence angle was able to detect errors in the estimated yaw altitude angle. Also, small instrument gain biases in some of the processing channels were detected. This led to the development of an improved NRCS algorithm, which uses a more accurate method for estimating the system noise power.

Experimental Determination of the 1 Sigma(+) State Electric-Dipole-Moment Function of Carbon Monoxide up to a Large Internuclear Separation

Experimental intensity information is combined with numerically obtained vibrational wave functions in a nonlinear least squares fitting procedure to obtain the ground electronic state electric-dipole-moment function of carbon monoxide valid in the range of nuclear oscillation (0.87 to 1.01 A) of about the V = 38th vibrational level. Mechanical anharmonicity intensity factors, H, are computed from this function for delta V + = 1, 2, 3, with or = to 38.

Experimental determination of the 1 Sigma(+) state electric dipole moment function of carbon monoxide up to a large internuclear separation

Experimental intensity information is combined with numerically obtained vibrational wave functions in a nonlinear least-squares fitting procedure to obtain the ground electronic state electric dipole moment function of carbon monoxide valid in the range of nuclear oscillation (0.87-1.91 A) of about the V = 38th vibrational level. Vibrational transition matrix elements are computed from this function for Delta V = 1, 2, 3 with V not more than 38.

High spectral resolution observations of the coronal X-ray emission from the RS CVn binary Sigma Corona Borealis

The results of high-resolution observations of the RS CVn binary star Rho Cr B are reported. The observations were carried out using the Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS) onboard the Einstein Observatory satellite. A spectral scan in the interval 800-840 eV shows clear evidence of an X-ray emission line at 826 eV identified with 1S(0)-1P(1) transition of Fe XVII. A prominent peak at 1007 eV in the scan band 986-1014 eV was attributed to a blend of lines produced by highly ionized iron. On the basis of the observed fluxes of the lines and the theoretical calculations of Raymond and Smith (1977), best-fit values of corona temperature and volume emission measures of 6.92 (+0.84 or -0.75) x 10 to the 6th K, and 1.74 (+0.55 or -0.69) x 10 to the 35th are derived, respectively. Some implications of the results are briefly discussed.

Fluorescence branching ratios in nitric oxide - Emission from the A2 Sigma(+) (v prime = 1)

The most complete set of branching ratios from the v-prime = 1 level of the A-state in NO measured to data is reported. The assumption that virtually all of the emitted radiation has been sampled is used to extract Franck-Condon factors from the v-prime = 1 manifold. A comparison with previously published results indicates that, except for the (1,0) band, there is reasonably good agreement.

Transition probabilities in OH A 2 sigma + - X 2 pi i: Bands with v prime = 0 and 1, v double prime = 0 to 4

Experimental results for relative vibrational band transition probabilities for v prime = 0 and 1, and v double prime = 0 to 4 in the A-X electronic system of OH are presented. The measurements, part of a larger set involving v prime = 0 to 4 and v double prime = 0 to 6, were made using spectrally dispersed laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in the burnt gases of a flame. These Einstein coefficients will be useful in dynamics experiments for quantitative LIF determinations of OH radical concentrations in high v double prime.

High Resolution Emission Spectroscopy of the Alpha Pi-1 - Chi Sigma-1(+) Fourth Positive Band System of CO from Electron Impact

We report electron-impact induced fluorescence spectra [300 mA full width at half maximum (FWHM)] of CO for 20 and 100 eV impact energies of the spectral region of 1300 to 2050 A and high resolution spectra (FWHM) of the v'=5 to v"=l and the v'=3 to v"=O bands showing that the rotational structure of the band system are modeled accurately. The excitation function of the (0,1) band (1597 A) was measured from electron impact in the energy range from threshold to 750 eV and placed on an absolute scale from modem calibration standards.

Absolute Rovibrational Intensities for the Chi(sup 1)Sigma(sup +) v=3 <-- 0 Band of (12)C(16)O Obtained with Kitt Peak and BOMEM FTS Instruments

This work was initiated to compare absolute line intensities retrieved with the Kitt Peak FTS (Fourier Transform Spectrometer) and Ames BOMEM FTS. Since thermal contaminations can be a problem using the BOMEM instrument if proper precautions are not taken it was thought that measurements done at 6300 per cm would more easily result in satisfactory intercomparisons. Very recent measurements of the CO 3 <-- 0 band fine intensities confirms results reported here that the intensities listed in HITRAN (High Resolution Molecular Absorption Database) for this band are on the order of six to seven percent too low. All of the infrared intensities in the current HITRAN tabulation are based on the electric dipole moment function reported fifteen years ago. The latter in turn was partly based on intensities for the 3 <-- 0 band reported thirty years ago. We have, therefore, redetermined the electric dipole moment function of ground electronic state CO.

Entangled Biphoton Virtual-State Spectroscopy of the A(exp 2)Sigma(sup +)-X(exp 2)Pi System of OH

This Letter describes the first application of entanglement-induced virtual-state spectroscopy to a molecular system. Non-classical, non-monotonic behavior in a two-photon absorption cross section of the OH A-X system, induced by an entangled biphoton state is theoretically demonstrated. A Fourier transform analysis of the biphoton cross section permits access to the energy eigenvalues of intermediate rovibronic states with a fixed excitation photon energy. The dependence of the Fourier spectrum on the tuning range of the entanglement time (T(sub e)) and the relative path delay (tau(sub e)) is discussed. Our analysis reveals that the implementation of molecular virtual-state spectroscopy for the OH A-X system requires the tuning of tau(sub e) over a pico-second range with femto-second resolution.
