Oxygen‐Assisted Supercapacitive Swing Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide

We report on the supercapacitive swing adsorption (SSA) of carbon dioxide at different voltage windows in the presence of oxygen using activated carbon electrodes, and deliquescent, aqueous electrolytes. The presence of O 2 in the CO 2 /N 2 gas mixture results in an up to 11 times higher CO 2 adsorption capacity with 3 M MgBr 2 (at 0.6 V) and up to 4–5 times higher adsorption capacity with 3 M MgCl 2 (at 1 V). A tradeoff between high CO 2 adsorption capacities and lower coulombic efficiencies was observed at voltages above 0.6 V. The energetic and adsorptive performance of the electrodes in the presence of oxygen below 0.5 V was similar to the performance with a CO 2 /N 2 mixture without oxygen at 1 V. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of the electrodes demonstrate that the specific capacitance increases while the diffusion resistance decreases in the presence of oxygen. Oxygen concentrations ranging between 5–20 % give similar energetic and adsorptive performance. The electrodes exhibit stable performance for up to 100 cycles of operation.

Topology optimization for the full-cell design of porous electrodes in electrochemical energy storage devices

In this paper, we introduce a density-based topology optimization framework to design porous electrodes for maximum energy storage. We simulate the full cell with a model that incorporates electronic potential, ionic potential, and electrolyte concentration. The system consists of three materials, namely pure liquid electrolyte and the porous solids of the anode and cathode, for which we determine the optimal placement. We use separate electronic potentials to model each electrode, which allows interdigitated designs. As a result, a penalization is required to ensure that the anode and cathode do not touch, i.e., causing a short circuit. We compare multiple 2D designs generated for different fixed conditions, e.g. material properties. A 3D design with complex channel and interlocked structure is also created. All optimized designs are far superior to the traditional monolithic electrode design with respect to energy storage metrics. We observe up to a 750% increase in energy storage for cases with slow effective ionic diffusion within the porous electrode.

Valuation of Anode Materials for High-Performance Lithium Batteries: From Graphite to Lithium Metal and Beyond

Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized energy storage, yet advanced technologies such as electric vehicles and eVTOLs demand even higher performance and safety. Anodes, the negative electrodes, are crucial in enhancing batteries’ safety, lifespan, and fast-charging capabilities. This review paper comprehensively evaluates the progression of anode materials from traditional graphite to advanced anodes like lithium metal. Graphite anodes, with a capacity of 372 mAh g −1 , enabled the first commercial lithium-ion batteries, but future applications require higher energy densities and fast-charging capabilities. Emerging anode materials, including alloying, and conversion types, as well as lithium metal, offer significantly higher capacities, with lithium metal offering a theoretical capacity of 3 860 mAh g −1 . However, these advanced anodes face challenges such as volume expansion, high surface reactivity, sluggish Li+ kinetics, and unstable lithium deposition morphologies. Here, this review critically examines the electrochemical performance, interfacial properties, mechanical attributes, and stability issues of various anode materials. It further discusses solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, strategies for enhancing interface stability, and the requirements of anodes for solid-state batteries. Additionally, the review explores potential solutions for limitations with each anode type, highlights innovative anode-free architectures, and evaluates the current and future trends of battery anode industries. Ultimately, this paper aims to guide the development of high-performance anode materials, paving the way for the next generation of efficient, reliable lithium batteries.

Effect of pinholes in Nb 4 C 3 MXene sheets on its electrochemical behavior in aqueous electrolytes

Two-dimensional (2D) niobium carbide, Nb 4 C 3 T x (T x : O, OH, and F), a representative member of the 43 MXene structural motif, has shown promising electrochemical performance in acidic electrolytes. The capacitive performance of Nb 4 C 3 T x in neutral aqueous electrolytes has been reported as moderate, but little effort has been made to improve it. In this paper, we report a method to introduce nanopores (pinholes) in Nb 4 C 3 T x MXene flakes by adjusting the etching time. The pinholes generated during the etching process improve ion diffusion pathways, which are otherwise hindered by the restacking of the 2D flakes. The “holey Nb 4 C 3 T x ” shows a 50 % improved rate capability at charge/discharge time scales of 1–2 s in 1 M Li 2 SO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 , and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 electrolytes. Our strategy of controlling the permeability of Nb 4 C 3 T x sheets can potentially be applied to other MXenes, providing guidance for improving the capacitance and rate capability of 2D materials.

Microwave-driven synthesis and modification of nanocarbons and hybrids in liquid and solid phases

Over the past 20 years, nanocarbons have become more significant as nanostructured fillers in composites and, more recently, as functional elements in a brand-new class of hybrid materials. Microwave-assisted synthesis and processing is a burgeoning subject matter in materials research with significant strides in the realm of nanocarbon during the last decade. Here, the review examines recent approaches to producing various nanocarbons using microwaves as energy sources, the characterization of such materials for various applications, and their results. The underlying factors supporting the increased performance of such materials or their composites are analyzed and reaction mechanisms are presented wherever necessary. In particular, the recently developed and verified approaches to produce porous carbon materials, CNTs and fibers, carbon nanospheres, carbon dots, CQDs, reduced graphene oxide, nanocarbon hybrid materials, and the purification and modification of CNTs are discussed. The reduction of graphene oxide and the preparation of graphene derivative hybrids using solid-state and liquid-state routes such as polyopl, mixed solvents, ionic liquids, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal/solvothermal methods are analyzed in detail. In addition, the principles of microwave heating in liquid and solid states, the use of metals particles as arcing agents or catalysts, and carbonaceous materials as internal or external susceptors during synthesis and modifications are presented in detail.

Operando Revealing Dynamic Reconstruction of NiCo Carbonate Hydroxide for High-Rate Energy Storage

Transition metal carbonate hydroxide (CH) has been widely explored as a promising battery-type electrode for high-rate energy storage. However, its genuine active sites under realistic operating conditions remains elusive. In this work, by virtue of the cutting-edge operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we unfold the dynamic evolution of the local electronic and geometric structures for the CH electrode upon cycling. Our results reveal that the irreversible redox of Co cations at the early stage of cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycling induces a phase transition in the NiCo CH nanowires forming oxygen vacancies-enriched NiCo layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets with superior high-rate energy storage ability. Theoretical modeling demonstrates that the unsaturated 5-coordinated Co sites exhibit optimal redox reaction energy barrier and immensely promote the performance. These findings not only elucidate the electrochemical susceptibility of the Co-based carbonate hydroxide under operando conditions, but also highlight an electrochemical coordination-engineering strategy for the rational design of high-performance electrode.

High-rate, high-capacity electrochemical energy storage in hydrogen-bonded fused aromatics

Designing materials for electrochemical energy storage with short charging times and high charge capacities is a longstanding challenge. The fundamental difficulty lies in incorporating a high density of redox couples into a stable material that can efficiently conduct both ions and electrons. We report all-organic, fused aromatic materials that store up to 310 mAh g –1 and charge in as little as 33 s. This performance stems from abundant quinone/imine functionalities that decorate an extended aromatic backbone, act as redox-active sites, engage in hydrogen bonding, and enable a delocalized high-rate energy storage with stability upon cycling. Here, the extended conjugation and hydrogen-bonding-assisted bulk charge storage contrast with the surface-confined or hydration-dependent behavior of traditional inorganic electrodes.

Enhancing the capacitive performance of microporous materials with protic ionic liquids

Classical density functional theory (cDFT) is used to investigate the electrosorption of protic ionic liquids in porous electrodes within the framework of a coarse-grained model. The purpose of this study is to clarify the capacitive behavior of protic ionic liquids in confined geometry. Previous studies have indicated that thermodynamic properties (e.g., capacitance, phase behavior and ionic conductivity) are influenced by the composition of the acid-base system and show asymmetry between acid dominant versus base dominant compositions. Here, we find that the electric double layer capacitance can be significantly improved by using protic ionic liquids compared to its aprotic counterpart through optimization of the mixture composition (i.e., the ratio of acid to base). We demonstrate the influence of pore size and applied voltage on the capacitance performance of protic ionic liquids and provide insight into microscopic understanding of ion and solvent distributions inside micropores.

Synthesis of Ti 3 C 2 T z MXene from low-cost and environmentally friendly precursors

Herein we report an approach to synthesis Ti 3 AlC 2 MAX phase and Ti 3 C 2 T z MXene from low-cost precursors, viz. recycled carbon recovered from waste tire, recycled aluminum scrap, and titanium oxide. By adjusting the ratios of the initial materials, we determined that 3TiO 2 +6Al+1.9C resulted in the purest sample of Ti 3 AlC 2 when heated at 1,350 °C for 1 h. The MXene phase was synthesized by modified minimally intensive layer delamination and acid etching under N2 purging. The final Ti 3 C 2 T z films demonstrated conductivity of 5857 ± 680 S/cm and capacitance of 285 F/g (1,012 F/cm 3 ) at 20 mV/s scan rates, which are comparable with that produced from MAX phase of high-purity elemental precursors (viz. Ti, Al and C). Choosing readily available and inexpensive precursor materials such as these allows for a drastic reduction in production cost of the MXene, as well as reducing the environmental impact of the industry.

Understanding Functionalization of Titanium Carbide (MXene) with Quinones and Their Pseudocapacitance

In this work, the interaction mechanism of 1-aminoanthraquinone (AQ) on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene by noncovalent (AQ@Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and covalent (AQ-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) functionalization is reported. Spectroscopic, X-ray, and scattering techniques confirmed noncovalent functionalization of AQ on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene without its catalytic decomposition, resulting in intercalation and interaction of AQ with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Diazonium reaction was further used to covalently functionalize AQ molecules on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Optimized AQ-Ti 3 C 2 T x freestanding electrodes of ~44 μm thickness delivered capacitance of ~300 F/g and improved rate performance compared to the pristine counterpart (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) due to carbonyl redox of AQ and improved ionic transport between MXene layers due to pillaring of AQ molecules.

High-Mass Loading of Flower-like Ni-MoS 2 microspheres Toward Efficient Intercalation pseudocapacitive Electrode

This work reports the exploration of intercalation pseudocapacitance in a thicker electrode of flowerlike Ni-doped MoS 2 microspheres that features a mass loading of ~10 mg/cm 2 without sacrificing the gravimetric capacitance (~425 F/g at 5 mV/s). Integration of Ni atoms into MoS 2 microspheres not only stabilized the structural integrity but also ameliorated the rapid intercalation and deintercalation of electrolyte ions even at a commercial-level mass loading. The energy instability by Ni doping significantly changed the local bonding behavior and the overall electronic structure of MoS 2 , facilitating the breaking of the MoS 2 layer and generation of more active edge sites, which are responsible for faster reaction kinetics. The experiments attribute the overall capacitance enhancement in (Mo-Ni)S 2 to the increased rate of electrolyte ion insertion and extraction, which is confirmed by b-values close to 0.5, at different potentials, indicating that the current response predominantly depends on the diffusive mechanism for both MoS 2 and Ni-MoS 2 thicker electrodes. The symmetric device constructed with Ni-MoS 2 microspheres exhibited a capacitance value of 101 F/g in 1 mV/s, for which the energy density is 9 Wh/kg, as well as attained an outstanding cycling stability of 10000 cycles with 60% retention at 2 A/g. In addition to providing insights into the development of 2D TMDs, this work explores the design of robust and highly efficient intercalation electrode material for electrochemical energy storage devices.

Robust Interfacial Effect in Multi-interface Environment through Hybrid Reconstruction Chemistry for Enhanced Energy Storage

Electrochemical-oxidation-driven reconstruction has emerged as an efficient approach for developing advanced materials, but the reconstructed microstructure still faces challenges including inferior conductivity, unsatisfying intrinsic activity, and active-species dissolution. In this report we present hybrid reconstruction chemistry that synergistically couples electrochemical oxidation with electrochemical polymerization (EOEP) to overcome these constraints. During the EOEP process, the metal hydroxides undergo rapid reconstruction and dynamically couple with polypyrrole (PPy), resulting in an interface-enriched microenvironment. We observe that the interaction between PPy and the reconstructed metal center (i.e., Mn > Ni, Co) is strongly correlated. Theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the strong interaction between Mn sites and PPy breaks the intrinsic limitation of MnO 2 , rendering MnO 2 with a metallic property for fast charge transfer and enhancing the ion-adsorption dynamics. Operando Raman measurement confirms the promise of EOEP-treated Mn(OH) 2 (E-MO/PPy) to stably work under a 1.2 V potential window. The tailored E-MO/PPy exhibits a high capacitance of 296 F g –1 at a large current density of 100 A g –1 . Here our strategy presents breakthroughs in upgrading the electrochemical reconstruction technique, which enables both activity and kinetics engineering of electrode materials for better performance in energy-related fields.

Mismatching integration-enabled strains and defects engineering in LDH microstructure for high-rate and long-life charge storage

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been extensively investigated for charge storage, however, their development is hampered by the sluggish reaction dynamics. Herein, triggered by mismatching integration of Mn sites, we configured wrinkled Mn/NiCo-LDH with strains and defects, where promoted mass & charge transport behaviors were realized. The well-tailored Mn/NiCo-LDH displays a capacity up to 518 C g -1 (1 A g -1 ), a remarkable rate performance (78%@100 A g -1 ) and a long cycle life (without capacity decay after 10,000 cycles). We clarified that the moderate electron transfer between the released Mn species and Co 2+ serves as the pre-step, while the compressive strain induces structural deformation with promoted reaction dynamics. Theoretical and operando investigations further demonstrate that the Mn sites boost ion adsorption/transport and electron transfer, and the Mn-induced effect remains active after multiple charge/discharge processes. This contribution provides some insights for controllable structure design and modulation toward high-efficient energy storage.

Giant energy-storage density with ultrahigh efficiency in lead-free relaxors via high-entropy design

Next-generation advanced high/pulsed power capacitors rely heavily on dielectric ceramics with high energy storage performance. However, thus far, the huge challenge of realizing ultrahigh recoverable energy storage density (W rec ) accompanied by ultrahigh efficiency (η) still existed and has become a key bottleneck restricting the development of dielectric materials in cutting-edge energy storage applications. Here, we propose a high-entropy strategy to design “local polymorphic distortion” including rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal-cubic multiphase nanoclusters and random oxygen octahedral tilt, resulting in ultrasmall polar nanoregions, an enhanced breakdown electric field, and delayed polarization saturation. A giant W rec ~10.06 Jcm –3 is realized in lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics, especially with an ultrahigh η ~90.8%, showing breakthrough progress in the comprehensive energy storage performance for lead-free bulk ceramics. This work opens up an effective avenue to design dielectric materials with ultrahigh comprehensive energy storage performance to meet the demanding requirements of advanced energy storage applications.

The intrinsic electrochemical behavior of layered Cu 2 WSe 4 nanoparticles

Nanoplates of Cu 2 WSe 4 (~50 nm) were synthesized via a hot-injection method by one-pot selenation of WCl 6 and Cu(acac) 2 . This synthetic route provided another perspective towards the intrinsic electrochemical properties of Cu 2 MSe 4 (M = Mo or W), where their nanoparticles were previously synthesized via a metathesis route. In conclusion, cations-dependent cathodic events and surface activation anodic events were identified by cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile.
