CosTuuM: Polarized Thermal Dust Emission by Magnetically Oriented Spheroidal Grains

We present the new open-source C++-based Python library CosTuuM that can be used to generate infrared absorption and emission coefficients for arbitrary mixtures of spheroidal dust grains that are (partially) aligned with a magnetic field. We outline the algorithms underlying the software, demonstrate the accuracy of our results using benchmarks from literature, and use our tool to investigate some commonly used approximative recipes. We find that the linear polarization fraction for a partially aligned dust grain mixture can be accurately represented by an appropriate linear combination of perfectly aligned grains and grains that are randomly oriented, but that the commonly used picket fence alignment breaks down for short wavelengths. We also find that for a fixed dust grain size, the absorption coefficients and linear polarization fraction for a realistic mixture of grains with various shapes cannot both be accurately represented by a single representative grain with a fixed shape, but that instead an average over an appropriate shape distribution should be used. Insufficient knowledge of an appropriate shape distribution is the main obstacle in obtaining accurate optical properties. CosTuuM is available as a standalone Python library and can be used to generate optical properties to be used in radiative transfer applications.

Microwave-driven heterogeneous catalysis for activation of dinitrogen to ammonia under atmospheric pressure

This paper presents an innovative approach to producing energy-dense, carbon–neutral liquid ammonia as a means for carrying energy. This approach synergistically integrates microwave reaction chemistry with novel heterogeneous catalysis that decouples dinitrogen activation from high-temperature and high-pressure reactions, altering reaction pathways and increasing ammonia formation rate. Results presented here demonstrate that ammonia synthesis can be conducted at 280 ? and ambient pressure to achieve ~1 mmol ammonia/g cat/h over supported ruthenium catalyst systems utilizing microwave irradiation. It is further shown that adding promoter ions such as potassium, cerium, and barium significantly improves the ammonia production rate over undoped ruthenium-based catalysts. This effect could be attributed to enhanced dielectric loss processes that lead to stronger microwave absorption by the catalyst. Measurement of the equilibrium constant under microwave conditions showed a higher ammonia yield than under thermal equilibrium conditions for both the iron- and ruthenium-based catalysts. Finally, this study also illustrates the advantages of using a variable-frequency microwave reactor for ambient-pressure ammonia synthesis. Mechanistically, investigators believed that the oscillating electric fields of the radiation can couple with adsorbed nitrogen on the surface and accelerate its dissociation. Since dinitrogen dissociation on the surface is rate limiting, this effectively accelerates the reaction.

Orbital-Selective Instabilities and Spin Fluctuations at the Verge of Superconductivity in Interlayer-Expanded Iron Selenide

Understanding electron correlation-driven instabilities and their coupling to structural phases is essential for deciphering multiorbital pairing in unconventional superconductors. We investigate Li x (C 5 H 5 N) y Fe 2 Se 2 (x ∼ 0.6; y ∼ 0.7−0.9), a tetragonal β-FeSe intercalate with a superconducting transition temperature (T c = 39 K) closely tied to an expanded Fe-layer spacing (∼11.4 Å). High-resolution synchrotron Xray diffraction and core-level absorption spectroscopy reveal subtle lattice distortions on cooling without a symmetry-breaking transition. Instead, the material exhibits negative thermal expansion (NTE) in the two-dimensional Fe network below T S ∼ 70 K, and stiffening of local Se−Fe−Se bond dynamics near T c . The spatially incoherent rearrangement of FeSe 4 tetrahedra and the site-local fluctuations, signal reduced electron correlations compared to those of parent β-FeSe (T c = 8 K). Complementary X-ray emission spectroscopy, a fast local probe of Fe 3d valence states, detects persistent local Fe spin moments below T S , unlike quenching in related systems. These findings indicate that decoupling of Fe planes leads to an electronically driven lattice instability. The latter emerges as NTE induced from weak, orbital-selective localization of in-plane Fe 3d states rather than conventional transverse vibrations. Governed by Hund’s coupling, this selectivity permits coexistence of local spin fluctuations with itinerant d-electrons critical for enhancing T c . These results suggest that intercalation-driven d-orbital differentiation moderates electron correlations, providing a pathway to optimize the superconductivity in low-dimensional quantum materials.

Platinum-complexed phosphorous-doped carbon nitride for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Sustainable hydrogen gas production is critical for future fuel infrastructure. Here, a series of phosphorous-doped carbon nitride materials were synthesized by thermal annealing of urea and ammonium hexafluorophosphate, and platinum was atomically dispersed within the structural scaffold by thermal refluxing with Zeise's salt forming Pt–N/P/Cl coordination interactions, as manifested in X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopic measurements. The resulting materials were found to exhibit markedly enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic media, as compared to the P-free counterpart. This was accounted for by P doping that led to a significantly improved charge carrier density within C 3 N 4 , and the sample with the optimal P content showed an overpotential of only –22 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm –2 , lower than that of commercial Pt/C (–26 mV), and a mass activity (7.1 mA μg –1 Pt at –70 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) nearly triple that of the latter. Finally, results from the present study highlight the significance of P doping in the manipulation of the electronic structures of metal/carbon nitride nanocomposites for high-performance HER electrocatalysis.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual - Version 4.56

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.
