The effect of hydroxyl spacing in diols on the solvation structure, dynamics, and transport properties of choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a class of liquids that offer great potential in alleviating some of the challenges present in today's long-term energy storage methods because they have physical properties that are favorable for storable electrolyte solutions. In this work, a series of glycols (ethylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, and 1,5-pentanediol) were studied as potential hydrogen bond donors (HBD) with a common choline chloride (ChCl) as the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA). The solvation dynamics of the prepared systems were studied by measuring the solvent reorganization response using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TA). Conductivity, viscosity, density, ET(30) polarity, and dynamics of the prepared DESs were analyzed, with a particular interest in determining the effect of HBD chain length on these parameters. Here, classical molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate how the local liquid structure, solvent dynamics, and bulk solvent properties vary with changes in glycol chain length.

Pure- and mixed-gas transport properties of a microporous Tröger's Base polymer (PIM-EA-TB)

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) offer tantalizing combinations of high selectivity and permeability in initial gas permeation measurements. Here, we report characterization of pure- and mixed-gas permeation properties of a thick (~80 μm) PIM consisting of Tröger's Base (TB) and Ethanoanthracene (EA) films. The effects of feed pressure and temperature on pure-gas permeabilities of CH 4 , N 2 , O 2 , H 2 , and CO 2 were investigated. The physical aging behavior of the thick film was tracked via pure-gas O 2 , N 2 , and CH 4 permeability at 35 °C. Gas permeability decreased noticeably and selectivity increased as aging time increased. Particular attention was given to mixed-gas measurements of CO 2 and CH 4 (50/50) permeabilities at 35 °C and fugacities ranging from 2 to 18 atm to explore whether the rigid, bridged, bicyclic TB and EA units could resist CO 2 -induced plasticization. These results are presented along with pure-gas CO 2 and CH 4 results for membrane samples aged at different times. PIM-EA-TB aged for ~24 h did not show signs of plasticization across the fugacity range considered. Furthermore, dual-mode competitive sorption presumably caused the CO 2 /CH 4 mixed-gas selectivity to be slightly higher than its corresponding pure-gas selectivity. However, as aging time increased, aged films underwent progressively more rapid and extensive CO 2 -induced plasticization with increasing fugacity, suggesting a systematic relationship between physical aging and plasticization in PIMs. Consequently, physical aging caused less improvement in mixed-gas CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity than it did in pure-gas selectivity, due mainly to plasticization effects.

Synthesis and Transport Properties of the Family of Zintl Phases Ca 3 RESb 3 (RE = La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Tm, Lu): Exploring the Roles of Crystallographic Disorder and Core 4f Electrons for Enhancing Thermoelectric Performance

Zintl phases with complex crystal structures have been studied as promising candidate-materials for thermoelectric (TE) applications. Here, we report the syntheses of the family of rare-earth metal Zintl phases with the general formula Ca 4–x RE x Sb 3 (x ≈ 1; RE = La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Tm, Lu). The structural elucidation is based on refinements of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for 12 unique chemical compositions. The cubic structure is confirmed as belonging to the anti-Th 3 P 4 structure type (space group I4¯3d, no. 220, Z = 4), where the Ca and RE atoms share the same atomic site with ca. 75% and 25% occupancies, respectively. Such crystallographic disordering of divalent Ca and trivalent RE atoms in the structure provides a pathway to intricate bonding. The latter, together with the presence of heavy elements such as Sb and the lanthanides, are expected to enhance the scattering probability of phonons, thereby leading to as low thermal conductivity κ as that of the ordered RE 4 Sb 3 . The drive of the hypothetical parent compound Ca 4 Sb 3 to be stabilized by alloying with rare-earth metals can be understood following the Zintl-Klemm concept, as the resultant formula may be rationalized as (Ca 2+ ) 3 RE 3+ (Sb 3– ) 3 , indicating the realization of closed-shell electronic configurations for all elements. This notion is confirmed by electronic structure calculations, which reveal narrow bandgaps E g = 0.77 and 0.53 eV for Ca 3 LaSb 3 and Ca 3 LuSb 3 , respectively. Additionally, the incorporation of RE atoms into the structure drives the phase into a state of a degenerate semiconductor with dominant hole charge carriers.

A Dataset of 3D Structural and Simulated Transport Properties of Complex Porous Media

Physical processes that occur within porous materials have wide-ranging applications including - but not limited to - carbon sequestration, battery technology, membranes, oil and gas, geothermal energy, nuclear waste disposal, water resource management. The equations that describe these physical processes have been studied extensively; however, approximating them numerically requires immense computational resources due to the complex behavior that arises from the geometrically-intricate solid boundary conditions in porous materials. Here, we introduce a new dataset of unprecedented scale and breadth, DRP-372: a catalog of 3D geometries, simulation results, and structural properties of samples hosted on the Digital Rocks Portal. The dataset includes 1736 flow and electrical simulation results on 217 samples, which required more than 500 core years of computation. This data can be used for many purposes, such as constructing empirical models, validating new simulation codes, and developing machine learning algorithms that closely match the extensive purely-physical simulation. This article offers a detailed description of the contents of the dataset including the data collection, simulation schemes, and data validation.
