The blue stars above the turn-off in M67 - Horizontal branch or blue stragglers.

The nature of the pseudohorizontal branch in the galactic cluster M67 is investigated. A differential technique is used to determine the masses of these stars relative both to the turnoff-point stars and to the zero-age main sequence. The results obtained suggest that the pseudohorizontal-branch stars are analogs of the blue stragglers found in other galactic clusters.

Chemicals from biomass - The U.S. prospects for the turn of the century

Historically, chemicals from biomass have been and are expected to be economical in three major areas: byproducts, specialty items and polymers. Assessments of producing major chemicals from biomass in a processing plant based on the available conversion techniques indicate that they are not economically attractive, with the possible exception of conversion to ammonia and ethanol. The deterrents are the heavy capital investments, dependability of raw material supply and transportation costs for large plants, lack of operation experience, inadaptability of market variations, and competition from petroleum and coal. More importantly, it is also shown that even if chemicals from biomass were economical today, the resultant savings in petroleum would be far less than those achieved through other options available for the utilization of biomass as fuel and structural material. Thus, it is concluded that near-term research and development must be toward improved conversion processes, recovery of valuable products from waste streams at existing plants, more efficient use of biomass of energy and more efficient production of superior material products.

A Preliminary Survey of Plankton and Periphyton in the Turn Barge Canal and Basin Area of Kennedy Space Center, Florida

While thirty-seven species of various groups of organisms were identified at the five stations at KSC, further sampling is needed to further enumerate and identify phytoplankton and periphyton for the long term monitoring program and assessment for a probable polygeneration site. Thallophyta, Cyanophyta coccoid and Chrysophyta pennate were the dominant organisms. Chlorobium was the most abundant Thallophyta. Pennate diatoms were larger and more abundant at station one. The absence of Skeletonema costatum was surprising. Stations four and five appear to be acid marsh swales. Rhabdoderma lineare, a Cyanophyta coccoid found in acid lakes, was abundant in stations four and five.

Unsteady aerodynamic load estimates on turning vanes in the national full-scale aerodynamic complex

Unsteady aerodynamic design loads have been estimated for each of the vane sets in the National Full-Scale Aerodynamic Complex (NFAC). These loads include estimates of local loads over one vane section and global loads over an entire vane set. The analytical methods and computer programs used to estimate these loads are discussed. In addition, the important computer input parameters are defined and the rationale used to estimate them is discussed. Finally, numerical values are presented for both the computer input parameters and the calculated design loads for each vane set.

System Turns SAR Images Into Maps

Postprocessing system for synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) transforms raw images from natural rotated and distorted SAR reference frame into geocoded images. Images automatically corrected to remove slant-range nonlinearities and Doppler skew. Produces multiple-frame mosaics for large-scale mapping. Does not require tedious manual registration of representative "tie" points in raw SAR imagery with known locations on Earth.

Attitude analysis of the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) yaw turn anomaly

The July 2 Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) hydrazine thruster-controlled yaw inversion maneuver resulted in a 2.1 deg/sec attitude spin. This mode continued for 150 minutes until the spacecraft was inertially despun using the hydrazine thrusters. The spacecraft remained in a low-rate Y-axis spin of .06 deg/sec for 3 hours until the B-DOT control mode was activated. After 5 hours in this mode, the spacecraft Y-axis was aligned to the orbit normal, and the spacecraft was commanded to the mission mode of attitude control. This work presents the experience of real-time attitude determination support following analysis using the playback telemetry tape recorded for 7 hours from the start of the attitude control anomaly.

Interfacial wave theory for dendritic structure of a growing needle crystal. I - Local instability mechanism. II - Wave-emission mechanism at the turning point

The complicated dendritic structure of a growing needle crystal is studied on the basis of global interfacial wave theory. The local dispersion relation for normal modes is derived in a paraboloidal coordinate system using the multiple-variable-expansion method. It is shown that the global solution in a dendrite growth process incorporates the morphological instability factor and the traveling wave factor.

An Odyssey for the turn of the millennia

The paper discusses one of the goals of the U.S. national space policy, i.e., to expand human presence and activity beyond earth orbit into the solar system. Journeys to the Moon and Mars, involving Space Station Freedom and robotic spacecraft, require advances in technology and opportunities for international cooperation are substantual. Two or more significantly different reference mission architectures are planned to be developed and United States astronauts are expected to land on Mars before 2019. Ideas and technologies which may benefit the Space Exploration Initiative are channeled to a program, called 'Outreach Program', to be later assessed by the Synthesis Group, an organization of senior U.S. specialists.

Effect of metallic coatings on the thermal contact conductance of turned surfaces

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the degree to which the thermal contact conductance at the interface of contacting Aluminum 6061 T6 surfaces could be enhanced through the use of vapor-deposited metallic coatings. Three different coating materials (lead, tin, and indium) were evaluated using four different thicknesses for each coating material. The results verified the existence of an optimum coating thickness, shown to be in the range of 2.0 to 3.0 microns for indium, 1.5 to 2.5 microns for lead, and 0.2 to 0.5 microns for tin. The enhancement factors for thermal contact conductance were found to be on the order of 700, 400, and 50 percent, respectively. Based upon the experimental data, the hardness of the coating materials appears to be the most significant parameter in ranking the substrate and coating material combinations; however, additional experimental data are needed to substantiate this hypothesis. Finally, it was apparent that the thermal contact conductance enhancement effect was greatest at low contact pressures and decreased significantly with increases in the contact pressure.

Control integration concept for hypersonic cruise-turn maneuvers

Piloting difficulties associated with conducting aircraft maneuvers in hypersonic flight are caused in part by the nonintuitive nature of the aircraft response and the stringent constraints anticipated on allowable angle of attack and dynamic pressure variations. An approach is documented that provides precise, coordinated maneuver control during excursions from a hypersonic cruise flight path and the necessary flight condition constraints. The approach is to achieve specified guidance commands by resolving altitude and cross range errors into a load factor and bank angle command by using a coordinate transformation that acts as an interface between outer and inner loop flight controls. This interface, referred to as a 'resolver', applies constraints on angle of attack and dynamic pressure perturbations while prioritizing altitude regulation over cross range. An unpiloted test simulation, in which the resolver was used to drive inner loop flight controls, produced time histories of responses to guidance commands and atmospheric disturbances at Mach numbers of 6, 10, 15, and 20. Angle of attack and throttle perturbation constraints, combined with high speed flight effects and the desire to maintain constant dynamic pressure, significantly impact the maneuver envelope for a hypersonic vehicle.
