Calculated fission-fragment mass yields and average total kinetic energies of heavy and superheavy nuclei

Fission-fragment mass and total-kinetic-energy (TKE) distributions following fission of even-even nuclides in the region \(74 \le Z \le 126\) and \(92 \le N \le 230\) , comprising 896 nuclides have been calculated using the Brownian shape-motion method. The emphasis is the region of superheavy nuclei. To show compatibility with earlier results the calculations are extended to include earlier studied regions. An island of asymmetric fission is obtained in the superheavy region, \(106\le Z\le 114\) and \(162\le N\le 176\) , where the heavy fragment is found to be close to \(^{208}\) Pb and the light fragment adjusts accordingly. Most experimentally observed \(\alpha \) -decay chains of superheavy nuclei with \(Z > 113 \) terminate by spontaneous fission in our predicted region of asymmetric fission. In these cases, the pronounced large asymmetry is accompanied by a low TKE value compatible with measurements.

Enhanced hindrance from phenyl outer side chains on nonfullerene acceptor enables unprecedented simultaneous enhancement in organic solar cell performances with 16.7% efficiency

Inner side-chain engineering on Y6 has been a proven successful in improving short-circuit current density (JSC) through fine-tuning aggregated structures of acceptors. However, it fails in tuning the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level (LUMO) and open-circuit voltage (V OC ). In this paper, we turn to focus on engineering the outer side chains on the flanking thienothiophene units with 4-hexylphenyl (PhC6) and 6-phenylhexyl (C6Ph) chains. Use of PhC6 enhances the steric effect between the attached phenyl and the ending group, which in combination with the additional conjugation effect provided by the linking phenyl leads to upshifted energy levels and increased V OC as a result. Again, substitution with the bulkier PhC6 unprecedentedly improves film-morphology with reduced paracrystalline disorder and long period and increased root-mean-square composition variations as well, leading to increased electron and hole mobilities and suppressed monomolecular recombination with J SC and fill-factor (FF) simultaneously enhanced. The PM6:BTP-PhC6-based devices yield a higher efficiency value of 16.7% than the PM6:BTP-C6Ph-based one (15.5%). Furthermore, this study shows a conceptual advance in materials design towards reducing the conflict between V OC and J SC in binary blended organic solar cells, which can be achieved by introducing bulkier chains to twist the backbone and simultaneously enhance the packing order.

Orthogonal chemical genomics approaches reveal genomic targets for increasing anaerobic chemical tolerance in Zymomonas mobilis

Genetically engineered microbes have the potential to increase efficiency in the bioeconomy by overcoming growth-limiting production stress. Screens of gene perturbation libraries against production stressors can identify high-value engineering targets, but follow-up experiments needed to guard against false positives are slow and resource-intensive. In principle, the use of orthogonal gene perturbation approaches could increase recovery of true positives over false positives because the strengths of one technique compensate for the weaknesses of the other, but, in practice, two parallel screens are rarely performed at the genome scale. Here, we screen genome-scale CRISPRi (CRISPR interference) knockdown and transposon insertion libraries of the bioenergy-relevant Alphaproteobacterium, Zymomonas mobilis, against growth inhibitors commonly found in deconstructed plant material. Integrating data from the two gene perturbation techniques, we established an approach for defining engineering targets with high specificity. This allowed us to identify all known genes in the cytochrome bc1 and cytochrome c synthesis pathway as potential targets for engineering resistance to phenolic acids under anaerobic conditions, a subset of which we validated using precise gene deletions. Strikingly, this finding is specific to the cytochrome bc1 and cytochrome c pathway and does not extend to other branches of the electron transport chain. We further show that exposure of Z. mobilis to ferulic acid causes substantial remodeling of the cell envelope proteome, as well as the downregulation of TonB-dependent transporters. Our work provides a generalizable strategy for identifying high-value engineering targets from gene perturbation screens that is broadly applicable.

Nanosecond solvation dynamics in a polymer electrolyte for lithium batteries

Solvation dynamics critically affect charge transport. Spectroscopic experiments and computer simulations show that these dynamics in aqueous systems occur on a picosecond timescale. In the case of organic electrolytes, however, conflicting values ranging from 1 to several 100 picoseconds have been reported. We resolve this conflict by studying mixtures of an organic polymer and a lithium salt. Lithium ions coordinate with multiple polymer chains, resulting in temporary crosslinks. Relaxation of these crosslinks, detected by quasielastic neutron scattering, are directly related to solvation dynamics. Simulations reveal a broad spectrum of relaxation times. The average timescale for solvation dynamics in both experiment and simulation is one nanosecond. Here we present the direct measurement of ultraslow dynamics of solvation shell break-up in an electrolyte.

Neuromorphic scaling advantages for energy-efficient random walk computations

Neuromorphic computing, which aims to replicate the computational structure and architecture of the brain in synthetic hardware, has typically focused on artificial intelligence applications. What is less explored is whether such brain-inspired hardware can provide value beyond cognitive tasks. Here we show that the high degree of parallelism and configurability of spiking neuromorphic architectures makes them well suited to implement random walks via discrete-time Markov chains. Overall, these random walks are useful in Monte Carlo methods, which represent a fundamental computational tool for solving a wide range of numerical computing tasks. Using IBM’s TrueNorth and Intel’s Loihi neuromorphic computing platforms, we show that our neuromorphic computing algorithm for generating random walk approximations of diffusion offers advantages in energy-efficient computation compared with conventional approaches. We also show that our neuromorphic computing algorithm can be extended to more sophisticated jump-diffusion processes that are useful in a range of applications, including financial economics, particle physics and machine learning.

Engineering Pseudomonas putida KT2440 for chain length tailored free fatty acid and oleochemical production

Abstract Despite advances in understanding the metabolism of Pseudomonas putida KT2440, a promising bacterial host for producing valuable chemicals from plant-derived feedstocks, a strain capable of producing free fatty acid-derived chemicals has not been developed. Guided by functional genomics, we engineered P. putida to produce medium- and long-chain free fatty acids (FFAs) to titers of up to 670 mg/L. Additionally, by taking advantage of the varying substrate preferences of paralogous native fatty acyl-CoA ligases, we employed a strategy to control FFA chain length that resulted in a P. putida strain specialized in producing medium-chain FFAs. Finally, we demonstrate the production of oleochemicals in these strains by synthesizing medium-chain fatty acid methyl esters, compounds useful as biodiesel blending agents, in various media including sorghum hydrolysate at titers greater than 300 mg/L. This work paves the road to produce high-value oleochemicals and biofuels from cheap feedstocks, such as plant biomass, using this host.

Upcycling Polyethylene Waste to Advanced Carbon Materials for Energy Storage Applications

Polyethylene is notoriously difficult to upcycle because it decomposes into light gases at approximately 350-400 °C which prevents processing it at higher temperatures to convert it into high-value carbon materials, such as graphene or graphite. We address this challenge by using an air-based, thermo-oxidation process, which heats polyethylene (PE) just below the decomposition point to initiate oxidation and cross-linking of PE alkyl chains. These molecular transformations allow PE to be further graphenized or graphitized at higher temperatures without decomposing. The PE-derived graphene has a specific surface area up to 1,800 m 2/g and Raman ID/IG ratio of 0.85, which enables it to be used as an electrode material for a symmetric supercapacitor with the 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte. The PE-derived graphene material has a comparable electrochemical capacitive performance, such as power density, specific capacitance, and long cycle stability, to the commercial state of art porous carbon electrode. The stabilized PE could also be converted into highly crystalline flake graphite via low-temperature catalytic graphitization. The PE-derived graphite is used for the lithium-ion battery anode, which showed comparable electrochemical battery performance, such as reversible rate performance and long-term cyclic stability, to the current use battery-grade graphite, thus providing a scalable method to upcycle PE plastic waste into high-value carbon material.

Significant Efficiency Enhancements in Non‐Y Series Acceptors by the Addition of Outer Side Chains

Abstract Most current highly efficient organic solar cells utilize small molecules like Y6 and its derivatives as electron acceptors in the photoactive layer. In this work, a small molecule acceptor, SC8‐IT4F, is developed through outer side chain engineering on the terminal thiophene of a conjugated 6,12‐dihydro‐dithienoindeno[2,3‐d:2′,3′‐d′]‐s‐indaceno[1,2‐b:5,6‐b′]dithiophene (IDTT) central core. Compared to the reference molecule C8‐IT4F, which lacks outer side chains, SC8‐IT4F displays notable differences in molecule geometry (as shown by simulations), thermal behavior, single‐crystal packing, and film morphology. Blend films of SC8‐IT4F and the polymer donor PM6 exhibit larger carrier mobilities, longer carrier lifetimes, and reduced recombination compared to C8‐IT4F, resulting in improved device performance. Binary photovoltaic devices based on the PM6:SC8‐IT4F films reveal an optimal efficiency over 15%, which is one of the best values for non‐Y type small molecule acceptors (SMAs). The resultant devices also show better thermal and operational stability than the control PM6:L8‐BO devices. SC8‐IT4F and its blend exhibit a higher relative degree of crystallinity and π coherence length, compared to C8‐IT4F samples, beneficial for charge transport and device performance. The results indicate that outer side chain engineering on existing small electron acceptors can be a promising molecular design strategy for further pursuing high‐performance organic solar cells.

Assembly of Disordered Cocontinuous Morphologies by Multiblock Copolymers with Random Block Sequence and Length Dispersity

Among the wide variety of nanostructures accessible by self-assembly of block copolymers, cocontinuous morphologies are of great interest for separations, catalysis, sensing, and energy storage due to their ability to integrate distinct properties of the constituent polymers. Furthermore, we investigate the tendency to form disordered cocontinuous phases of multiblock copolymers (MBCs) with random block sequence and length dispersity prepared by step-growth polymerization of pre-made telechelic polymers, specifically using thiol-Michael addition between diacrylate functionalized polystyrene (PS) and poly (D,L - lactide) (PLA) chains and a small molecule dithiol. In the phase diagram so established, disordered cocontinuous nanostructures occupy a wide window (≈ 25 % vol) at a modest segregation strength of χN = 15, close to the critical value for microphase separation. At a higher segregation strength of χN = 30, only a moderately wide (≈ 10 vol %) cocontinuous window is found, with MBCs instead tending to form ordered nanostructures. Although the breadth of the cocontinuous widow is less than that found in prior work on analogous randomly end-linked copolymer networks (RECNs), the MBC architecture offers offsetting advantages in terms of solution and melt processability.

Evaluating the X2 initial core zero power physics tests with Serpent-Ants

The validation of the Ants nodal neutronics code for VVER applications is started by modelling the zero power physics tests for the initial core of the Khmelnitsky 2 nuclear power plant as described in the X2 benchmark using the Serpent-Ants two step neutronics calculation chain. The Ants prediction compare favorably against an earlier continuous energy Monte-Carlo reference solution as well as the measured data, except for discrepancies in the SCRAM worth between predicted and measured values. Similar discrepancies have been previously reported for VVER-1000 reactors, and the Ants predicted SCRAM worths match well with the Serpent results. Additionally, the assembly power distribution and axial power distribution predicted by Ants for the critical HZP state of the reactor are also compared to a reference Serpent solution with very good results. Lastly, an investigation into the effects of the few-group structure used in the nodal calculations and the use or lack of leakage correction for group constants on the results shows that the best accuracy is reached with seven or eight energy groups without leakage correction, although a reasonable accuracy can also be obtained with two or three energy groups using fundamental mode leakage correction. The microwave spectra of the conformers of $\mathcal{n}$-butyl nitrate

We report the microwave spectrum of n-butyl nitrate was recorded in the 5 to 20 GHz frequency range using broadband chirp and narrowband pulse excitation molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometers. A quantum chemistry structural analysis yielded thirteen stable conformers. Among them, the five most energetically stable conformers were observed in the experimental spectra. The most stable conformer features a butyl chain with an anti-gauche-anti conformation (AGA) where the γ-carbon atom is about 64° out of the nitrate plane. For this conformer, spectra of all 13 C and 15 N minor isotopologues could be measured. The conformer with a straight butyl chain (AAA), and three other conformers (GAA, GGA, and AGG) were also observed. Accurate rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, and 14 N nuclear quadrupole coupling constants could be deduced and compared to the theoretical values.

Electrochemistry of Redox Active Ferrocene Covalently Attached to Glassy Carbon Electrodes

Formation of well-ordered redox active monolayers is desirable for systematic study of electron transfer for sensor applications and generation of tailored hybrid materials. We have covalently attached 6-bromohexylferrocene (Fc(CH 2 ) 6 Br) to glassy carbon electrodes through a Grignard reaction and used cyclic voltammetry to characterize interfacial electron transfer and probe disorder in these modified electrodes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and cyclic voltammetry confirmed attachment of the expected Fe(II) species and reversible electron transfer is observed. However, the full width at half max of the cyclic voltammogram features deviates from the ideal value of 90.6 mV and varies with surface coverage, indicating a disordered surface. As a result, we determine this disorder arises from phase segregation where some domains have a high loading of the hexylferrocene chains while others have a lower loading of hexylferrocene resulting in different local environments that are distinguishable by cyclic voltammetry.

Markov Process to Evaluate the Value Proposition of a Risk-Informed Predictive Maintenance Strategy

To achieve high-capacity factors, the nuclear fleet has relied on labor-intensive and time-consuming operation and preventive maintenance programs for plant systems. Manually performed inspection, calibration, testing, and maintenance of plant assets at periodic frequencies, along with time-based replacement of assets irrespective of condition, have resulted in a costly, labor-centric business model. Fortunately, there are technologies that can eliminate unnecessary preventive maintenance activities by deploying risk-informed predictive maintenance, enabling the transition to a technology-centric business model. The technology-centric business model will enable plants to optimize and automate maintenance activities, leading to cost reductions since labor is a rising cost and technology is a declining cost. The implementation of scalable technologies and methodologies across plant systems and across the nuclear fleet is critical for successful deployment of a risk-informed predictive maintenance strategy at commercial nuclear power plants. The work presented in the report is being developed as part of a collaborative research effort between Idaho National Laboratory and Public Service Enterprise Group Nuclear, LLC. This report describes the technical basis using the Markov Process to evaluate the value proposition for the risk-informed predictive maintenance strategy for the circulating water system. The plant process data from the Salem nuclear plant’s circulating water system is utilized to develop a Markov chain risk models and formulation to estimate the loss and gain in revenue based on plant availability. The outcomes presented in this report provides the technical basis for extensive quantitative evaluation of a scalable risk-informed predictive maintenance strategy as part of future research.

The Multipolar Magnetic Field of the Millisecond Pulsar PSR J0030+0451

Modeling of the NICER X-ray waveform of the pulsar PSR J0030+0451, aimed at constraining the neutron star mass and radius, has inferred surface hot spots (the magnetic polar caps) that imply significantly nondipolar magnetic fields. To this end, we investigate magnetic field configurations that comprise offset dipole-plus-quadrupole components using a static vacuum field and force-free global magnetosphere models. Taking into account the compactness and observer angle values provided by Miller et al. and Riley et al., we compute geodesics from the observer plane to the polar caps to compute the resulting X-ray light curve. We explore, through Markov Chain Monte Carlo techniques, the detailed magnetic field configurations that can reproduce the observed X-ray light curve and have discovered degeneracies, i.e., diverse field configurations, which can provide sufficient descriptions of the NICER X-ray waveforms. Having obtained the force-free field structures, we then compute the corresponding synchronous γ-ray light curves following Kalapotharakos et al.; these we compare to those obtained by Fermi-LAT, to provide models consistent with both the X-ray and the γ-ray data, thereby restricting further the multipole field parameters. An essential aspect of this approach is the proper computation of the relative phase between the synchronous X- and γ-ray light curves. We conclude with a discussion of the broader implications of our study.

High-Fidelity Two-Qubit Gates Using a Microelectromechanical-System-Based Beam Steering System for Individual Qubit Addressing

In a large scale trapped atomic ion quantum computer, high-fidelity two-qubit gates need to be extended over all qubits with individual control. We realize and characterize high-fidelity two-qubit gates in a system with up to four ions using radial modes. The ions are individually addressed by two tightly focused beams steered using microelectromechanical system mirrors. We deduce a gate fidelity of 99.49(7)% in a two-ion chain and 99.30(6)% in a four-ion chain by applying a sequence of up to 21 two-qubit gates and measuring the final state fidelity. Our team characterizes the residual errors and discuss methods to further improve the gate fidelity towards values that are compatible with fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Elucidation of odd-chain dicarboxylate metabolism in Acinetobacter baylyi and application to polyethylene upcycling

Polyethylene (PE) is a versatile polymer, but its end-of-life management is challenging due to its recalcitrant structure. We present a promising approach combining chemical degradation and bio-upcycling to convert postconsumer PE waste into a value-added bioproduct. Specifically, PE was degraded into acetic acid and C 4 –C 7 dicarboxylic acids by nitric acid. We then elucidated the catabolic pathways for glutarate (C 5 ) and pimelate (C 7 ) in the nonmodel bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 through RNA sequencing, phenotyping, and enzymatic assays. Whole-genome sequencing of evolved isolates also identified a crucial IclR family transcriptional regulator, DcaS, which acts as a repressor of dicarboxylate metabolism. The reverse-engineered strain exhibited enhanced substrate utilization compared to the wild-type strain. Using rational metabolic engineering, the PE deconstruction products were bioconverted into the valuable chemical lycopene, highlighting the potential of this microbial chassis to produce value-added bioproducts from postconsumer PE waste, thus promoting a circular economy for plastics.

Emulator-based Bayesian calibration of a subglacial drainage model

Subglacial drainage models, often motivated by the relationship between hydrology and ice flow, sensitively depend on numerous unconstrained parameters. We explore using borehole water-pressure time series to calibrate the uncertain parameters of a popular subglacial drainage model, taking a Bayesian perspective to quantify the uncertainty in parameter estimates and in the calibrated model predictions. To reduce the computation time associated with Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling, we construct a fast Gaussian process emulator to stand in for the subglacial drainage model. We first carry out a calibration experiment using synthetic observations consisting of model simulations with hidden parameter values as a demonstration of the method. Using real borehole water pressures measured in western Greenland, we find meaningful constraints on four of the eight model parameters and a factor-of-three reduction in uncertainty of the calibrated model predictions. These experiments illustrate Gaussian process-based Bayesian inference as a useful tool for calibration and uncertainty quantification of complex glaciological models using field data. However, significant differences between the calibrated model and the borehole data suggest that structural limitations of the model, rather than poorly constrained parameters or computational cost, remain the most important constraint on subglacial drainage modelling.
