Energy Analysis: Ways to Save Energy and Reduce the Emissions in Wastewater Treatment Plants

The key of this study is to explore the primary energy consumers in wastewater treatment plants, which is considered as one of the major energy consumers, and introduces the best solution to save energy and reduce emissions in these facilities. This study is based on the energy assessment and analyses of eleven wastewater treatment plants. Through the investigation, it was found that plants can save up to 44,158 MWh of the energy consumption which is 47% from the total electricity consumption with a 17% reduction in the total utility bills and that about 2.5 million dollars cost savings after reviewing the currently facilitated energy system. Additionally, an average of five years' payback period resulted in most energy-saving recommendations. A vast potential of greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced with a total range reduction between 13 to 35 million kg of CO 2 based on the speed reduction percentage.

ON THE WAY TO A 10MEV, CONDUCTION-COOLED COMPACT SRF ACCELERATOR

After the success of designing a compact 1MeV, 1MW accelerator based on conduction-cooled SRF, Jefferson Lab is now pursuing a concept to provide a tenfold increase of the beam energy. The obvious challenge for SRF is to move from a single-cell to a multicell cavity while maintaining high efficiency and the ability to operate the machine without a complex cryogenic plant. This paper summarizes the current state of this effort with respect to the design of a Nb3Sn coated five-cell cavity and the corresponding RF components, especially the fundamental power coupler (FPC), as well as first thermal analysis of the cryocooler-based cooling setup.

Chicago Pile-1 paved the way for nuclear science and a lab in Los Alamos First self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was nearly 80 years ago

On a bitter-cold winter day, 43 scientists gathered at an abandoned squash court at the University of Chicago where they would ultimately enable a secret lab in Los Alamos to change the world just years later. It was December 2, 1942. The group, led by Italian physicist and Nobel laureate Enrico Fermi, stacked graphite bricks, piling 57 layers that totaled more than 770,000 pounds. Later named Chicago Pile-1, their goal was to create the world’s first self-sustaining, controlled nuclear chain reaction. Inside the approximately 20-feet-tall pile were smaller blocks of uranium and control rods that, when removed, would cause the reaction to go critical – meaning create a nuclear chain reaction. It was roughly $1 million worth of materials, equivalent to nearly $16 million today, and a concept that a nuclear chain reaction would allow the weaponization of the atom. “Its success would be the crucial proof needed to know it would be possible to create an atomic bomb,” said LANL Historian Roger Meade (C-NR). “This was the precursor to the Lab we have today, nearly 80 years later.”

The importance of Noether's theorem for the way we think today

In the summer of 1918, German mathematician Emmy Noether published the two-part theorem that now bears her name, establishing profound connections between symmetries and conservation laws and between symmetries and interactions. These insights exert a pervasive influence in physics; they give meaning to conservation laws that elevates them beyond useful empirical rules, and they underlie all our theories of the fundamental interactions. In Noether's later career, her papers, lectures, and personal interactions with students and colleagues drove the development of abstract algebra, establishing her in the pantheon of twentieth-century mathematicians.

Paving the Way for Electroweak Baryogenesis

A detail look at the ingredients needed for creating the observed matter anomaly of the universe at the electroweak scale: new particles related to the Higgs boson, new sources of CP violation, and possibly new forces, all manifesting during the electroweak phase transition in the early universe. I will discuss three examples of plausible scenarios, two focused on the problem of preserving an asymmetry once created, and the third exhibiting a new mechanism where the source of both CP violation and the resulting asymmetry comes from the dark matter sector.
