Structure and thermodynamics of calcium rare earth silicate oxyapatites, Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 (RE = Pr, Tb, Ho, Tm)

Calcium rare earth silicate oxyapatites, (Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ), are of interest as components of glass-ceramic nuclear waste forms. To assess their long-term behavior in a geologic repository, it is essential to determine their structure and thermodynamic stability at relevant conditions. Here, in this work, we performed detailed structural and thermodynamic investigations on Ca 2 Pr 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 , Ca 2 Tb 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 , Ca 2 Ho 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 , and Ca 2 Tm 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 by high energy synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction combined with Rietveld analysis and high temperature oxide melt drop solution calorimetry. Enthalpies of formation from constituent oxides (ΔH f,ox ) were determined to be -765.1 ± 22.8 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Pr 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ; -638.9 ± 20.5 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Tb 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ; -643.3 ± 10.3 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Ho 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 ; and -403.2 ± 5.1 kJ/mol for Ca 2 Tm 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 . These thermodynamic parameters were used in assessing the thermochemical stability of these phases in the presence of water vapor from room temperature to 600 K, as encountered in the subsurface environments of a geological repository.

A Simple Approach for the Synthesis of Cellulose Nanofiber Reinforced Chitosan/PVP Bio Nanocomposite Film for Packaging

The development of chitosan-based food packaging film has been increasing due to its wider availability, biodegradability, low-cost, and renewability. The purpose of this study was to develop cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) reinforced Chitosan/PVP(CHP) green bio nanocomposite film by solvent casting method with enhanced barrier and mechanical property. CNFs of dimension 9–11 nm and 100–200 nm were extracted from jute fibers by directly treating it with HNO{sub 3}–NaNO{sub 2} mixture. Bio nanocomposite films were synthesized with various concentrations of CNFs and evaluated using SEM, TGA/DTG and XRD to analyze the morphology, thermal behavior and crystallinity of bio nanocomposite films. SEM analysis revealed the uniform dispersion of CNFs in CHP matrix. Thermal stability of prepared bio nanocomposite films was improved with the loading of 5 wt% of cellulose nanofibers. ATR(FT-IR) spectra shows physical interaction between all the components of bio nanocomposite film. The bio nanocomposite films were also characterized for physical property like thickness, mechanical testing and barrier properties. The addition of CNFs significantly enhanced the mechanical property of bio nanocomposite films. Furthermore, water and oxygen transmission rate of bio nanocomposite film decreased with the increase in CNFs concentration. Overall the performed studies confirmed, the use of CNFs in polymer matrix makes it possible to produce a flexible, transparent, thermally stable bio nanocomposite film with enhanced mechanical and barrier properties for food packaging applications.

Divanadium substituted keggin [PV 2 W 10 O 40 ] on non-reducible supports-Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 : synthesis, characterization, and catalytic properties for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane

Molecular metal oxide cluster, K 5 [α-1,2-PV 2 W 10 O 40 ] (PV 2 W 10 ), was found to have intrinsic catalytic activity for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with high selectivity (> 80%) to propylene at low propane conversion (0.3%). Synthesis of dispersed PV 2 W 10 in non-reducible supports, γ-Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 , was done by incipient wetness impregnation. The supported catalysts were characterized by IR, Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, x-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), elemental analysis, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 –TPR), and ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH 3 –TPD). Catalytic testing of the supported PV 2 W 10 at equimolar cluster concentration revealed that when supported in γ-Al 2 O 3 it is more active (sevenfold increase in propane conversion) but in SiO 2 it is more selective to propylene (94%). The observed performance was due to both an increase in reducibility and higher concentration of strong acid sites for PV 2 W 10 supported in γ-Al 2 O 3 versus SiO 2 . Lastly, PV 2 W10 was shown to remain intact under reaction conditions indicating its thermal and oxidative stability.

A Limit to Accelerated Free-Sintering: Nano-Phase Separation Interferes With Organic Debinding

Nano-phase separating Ni–12 at. pct Ag powders are processed via high-energy ball milling and brought into a supersaturated state with a reduction of the grain size to the nanocrystalline scale, a combination that is designed to encourage rapid densification by phase separation upon heating. This unstable powder is then characterized by dilatometry, in-situ x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry and microstructure analysis for sintering cycles up to 940 °C. However, these powder compacts exhibit excessive pore evolution and significant macroscopic swelling caused by removal of the organic process additives. This competition of organic removal with densification is known in nanocrystalline metals, but the present study adds an additional dimension of phase separation, which shifts the dominant swelling mechanism as the formation of the second phase traps the volatilizing organics and hinders the debinding process. The creep swelling and overall loss in relative density is then dominated by the creep deformation of the second Ag phase. The interference between organic removal and low-temperature onset of consolidation represents a new challenge to efforts aimed at rapid free sintering and should guide the design of rapidly sintering alloys; specifically, the present work emphasizes the need to select alloys that have their sintering-accelerating phase separation temperature above the range where gases are evolved.

Influence of polycarboxylate superplasticizer, citric acid and their combination on the hydration and workability of calcium sulfoaluminate cement

Highlights: • The dispersion efficiency of polycarboxylate superplasticizers drops quickly over time. • Citric acid maintains the dispersion efficiency of PCE over time. • Competitive adsorption between citric acid and PCE occurs. • The combination of citric acid with PCE decreases the initial dispersion efficiency of PCE. PCEs are well known to improve the initial fluidity of CSA. However, their dispersion efficiency drops quickly over time. This issue can be solved by incorporating retarders. In this context, this paper deals with the influence of citric acid, used as a retarder, PCE and their combination on the hydration and workability of CSA. Isothermal calorimetry, XRD and TG analysis were used to describe the hydration process, while workability was characterized with the mini-cone test. Adsorption behavior was investigated using total organic carbon analyzer coupled with ion chromatography. Results show that the introduction of citric acid retained the dispersion efficiency of PCE over time. However, the initial dispersion efficiency of PCE was decreased by citric acid as the latter tend to adsorb first on the surface of cement grains, inhibiting the adsorption of PCE. A dispersion model was proposed to describe the acting mechanism of these admixtures on CSA.

Synthesis and characterisation of alites from reduced basic oxygen furnace slags

Basic oxygen furnace slags (BOFS) are by-products of the steelmaking process. Several researchers have studied the production of Portland cement clinker and metallic iron from BOFS via a reductive treatment. }In this study, we applied a carbothermal reduction of BOFS in a technical-scale electric arc furnace and characterised the clinker-like products. Those clinker-like non-metallic products (NMPs) had a chemical and mineralogical composition comparable to clinker for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and contained large elongated alite crystals as major component. The pure NMPs reacted more slowly and achieved a lower degree of hydration compared with commercial OPC. }If the reactivity of the products can be further increased by employing specific adaptations, it can be used as a full clinker substitute for OPC. Nevertheless, it is also an option to use the material without further modifications as a cement component or concrete addition, which contributes to the strength development in both cases.

Pressureless sintering of lithium hydride

Lithium Hydride is a material of growing importance for addressing technological challenges related to nuclear fusion, long-term human space travel, and thermal energy storage. Pressureless sintering provides a straightforward, scalable approach to produce dense LiH parts of all sizes and shapes. Pressed LiH green compacts were sintered at heating rates from 2.5 to 20 °C/min to 650 °C, yielding densities up to 96 ± 1.4 %, with densification initiating at 500 °C. Here, a validated master sintering curve was constructed with a sintering apparent activation energy of 135 kJ/mol. X-ray diffraction and simultaneous thermal analysis revealed Li 2 O formation from 300 – 550 °C and decomposition of LiH into Li metal at 550 °C, each reflected as deviations in the master sintering curve. Computed tomography after thermal treatment to 550 °C showed the formation of corrosion products, and after thermal treatment to 650 °C LiH reduction to Li most significantly at exposed surfaces.

Reversible Disorder-to-Order Transition Induced by Aqueous Lithiation in Vanadate Electrode Materials

Vanadium-based oxides are intriguing electrode materials in aqueous electrochemical systems owing to their low cost and high theoretical capacity for alkali storage, especially lithium (Li) ions. However, a sequence of phase transformations and irreversible structure distortion upon Li-ion intercalation causes structural instability and has been a lingering problem for vanadium oxide electrodes. Here, in this work, we investigate lithium vanadate (Li–V 3 O 8 ) for aqueous Li-ion intercalation and deintercalation processes. Unlike its crystalline V 2 O 5 polymorph, Li–V 3 O 8 retains monophasic lithiation, which is attributed to its disordered crystalline nature and large interplanar distance. Importantly, we show a unique and reversible sequence of disorder-to-order structural transition induced by the extent of lithiation, which indicates sequential interlayer and intralayer lithiation process, and vice versa in delithiation process, supported by electrokinetic analysis, in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Debye scattering simulations. The absence of distortive phase transitions and multilithiation pathways facilitates Li-ion diffusion across the vanadate electrode materials to improve storage capacity. This work opens a new dimension for vanadium-based disordered oxides, accelerating the development of low-cost, aqueous electrochemical systems.

High-Pressure Phase Transition of Metastable Wurtzite-Like CuInSe 2 Nanocrystals

Ternary I–III–VI 2 semiconductors, such as CuInSe 2 , exhibit diverse polymorphs with unique structural characteristics and optoelectronic properties. This study investigates the pressure-induced phase transitions of metastable wurtzite-like CuInSe 2 nanocrystals. Using a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and density functional theory calculations, we reveal a transition from cation-ordered wurtzite-like (Pmc2 1 ) to cation-disordered NaCl-like (Fm3̅m) structures at 7.7 GPa. The cation-disordered NaCl-like phase persists upon decompression. Bulk modulus calculations highlight size-dependent deviations from bulk material behavior. These findings deepen our understanding of phase stability in colloidal I–III–VI 2 semiconductor nanocrystals, with implications for tailoring functional materials under extreme conditions.

On the Structural Origin of Fast Li-Ion Cycling in Tetragonal Bronze-Type Nb 8 W 9 O 47

Bronze and bronze-derived, mixed metal oxides are materials of growing interest for lithium-ion battery anodes due to their high-rate capabilities and the potential for high energy densities via multielectron redox. We report on the synthesis and electrochemical properties of the tetragonal tungsten bronzetype phase Nb 8 W 9 O 47 and our investigation into the structural evolution of this phase upon lithium (de)intercalation, with particular attention to how it relates to the fast-cycling capabilities. Electrochemical cycling shows Nb 8 W 9 O 47 can achieve greater than one Li + per transition metal at rates of C/2 or slower and maintains a capacity equivalent to 0.65 Li + per transition metal at a rate of 20C. Sequential Rietveld analysis of operando X-ray diffraction data reveals anisotropic changes to the unit cell parameters during discharge, accompanied by an off-centering of the transition metals within their octahedral environments. While higher capacities can be accessed below 1.2 V, cells discharged to 1.0 V exhibit a significant expansion of the unit cell volume and reduced Coulombic efficiencies. This report suggests that rigid crystal structures incapable of undergoing polyhedral rotational deformations can instead exploit displacive distortions of the transition metal redox center to enable fast Li-ion cycling with minimal atomic rearrangements.

Sample Dependence of Magnetism in the Next-Generation Cathode Material LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2

We present a structural and magnetic study of two batches of polycrystalline LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (commonly known as Li NMC 811), a Ni-rich Li ion battery cathode material, using elemental analysis, X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetometry, and polarized neutron scattering measurements. We find that the samples, labeled S1 and S2, have the composition Li 1–x Ni 0.9+x–y Mn y Co 0.1 O 2 , with x = 0.025(2), y = 0.120(2) for S1 and x = 0.002(2), y = 0.094(2) for S2, corresponding to different concentrations of magnetic ions and excess Ni 2+ in the Li + layers. Both samples show a peak in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) dc susceptibility at 8.0(2) K, but the temperature at which the ZFC and FC (field-cooled) curves deviate is substantially different: 64(2) K for S1 and 122(2) K for S2. The ac susceptibility measurements show that the transition for S1 shifts with frequency whereas no such shift is observed for S2 within the resolution of our measurements. Our results demonstrate the sample dependence of magnetic properties in Li NMC 811, consistent with previous reports on the parent material LiNiO 2 . Here, we further establish that a combination of experimental techniques is necessary to accurately determine the chemical composition of next-generation battery materials with multiple cations.

Centrosymmetric or Noncentrosymmetric? Transition Metals Talking in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe)

Two new quaternary sulfides K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) have been synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state routine and flux growth method. The crystal growth process of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) was elucidated by in-situ powder X-ray diffraction and DSC thermal analysis. The mm-sized crystals of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T=Co, Fe) were grown. K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in a new structure type in centrosymmetric space group P1¯ (No. 2) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.016(1) Å, b = 7.770(1)Å, c = 14.342(1) Å, α = 93.80(1)°, β = 92.65(1)°, γ = 114.04(1)°. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 crystallizes in K 2 FeGe 3 Se 8 structure type and the noncentrosymmetric space group P2 1 (No. 4) with unit cell parameters of a = 7.1089(5)Å, b = 11.8823(8)Å, c = 16.7588(11)Å, β = 96.604(2)°. There is a high structural similarity between K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 . The larger volume coupled with higher degrees of distortion of [FeS 4 ] tetrahedra compared to [CoS 4 ] tetrahedra accounts for the structure’s shift from centrosymmetric to noncentrosymmetric. The theory simulation confirms that [TS 4 ]T= Co or Fe tetrahedra play a crucial role in controlling the structure and properties of K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe). The measured optical bandgaps of K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 and K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 are 2.1(1) eV and 2.6(1) eV respectively. K 2 FeGe 3 S 8 shows antiferromagnetic ordering at 24K while no magnetic ordering was detected in K 2 CoGe 3 S 8 . In conclusion, the magnetic measurements also demonstrate the divalent nature of transition metals in K 2 TGe 3 S 8 (T = Co, Fe).

Formation of 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 during Thermochemical Reduction of 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 : Identification of a Polytype in the Ba(Ce,Mn)O 3 Family

The resurgence of interest in a hydrogen economy and the development of hydrogen-related technologies has initiated numerous research and development efforts aimed at making the generation, storage, and transportation of hydrogen more efficient and affordable. Solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH) is a process that potentially exhibits numerous benefits such as high reaction efficiencies, tunable thermodynamics, and continued performance over extended cycling. Although CeO 2 has been the de facto standard STCH material for many years, more recently 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 (BCM) has demonstrated enhanced hydrogen production at intermediate H 2 /H 2 O conditions compared to CeO 2 , making it a contender for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the thermo-reduction stability of 12R-BCM dictates the oxygen partial pressure (pO 2 ) and temperature conditions optimal for cycling. In this study, we identify the formation of a 6H-BCM polytype at high temperature and reducing conditions, experimentally and computationally, as a mechanism and pathway for 12R-BCM decomposition. 12R-BCM was synthesized with high purity and then controllably reduced using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) data is used to identify the formation of a 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 (6H-BCM) polytype that is formed at 1350 degrees C under strongly reducing pO 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) total energy and defect calculations show a window of thermodynamic stability for the 6H-polytype consistent with the XRD results. These data provide the first evidence of the 6H-BCM polytype and could provide a mechanistic explanation for the superior water-splitting behaviors of 12R-BCM.

Synthesis and Characterization of Isostructural Th(IV) and U(IV) Pyridine Dipyrrolide Complexes

A series of pyridine dipyrrolide actinide(IV) complexes, ( Mes PDP Ph )AnCl 2 (THF) and An( Mes PDP Ph ) 2 (An = U, Th, where ( Mes PDP Ph ) is the doubly deprotonated form of 2,6-bis(5-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine), have been prepared. Characterization of all four complexes has been performed through a combination of solid- and solution-state methods, including elemental analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic absorption and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. Collectively, these data confirm the formation of the mono- and bis-ligated species. Time-dependent density functional theory has been performed on all four An(IV) complexes, providing insight into the nature of electronic transitions that are observed in the electronic absorption spectra of these compounds. Room temperature, solution-state luminescence of the actinide complexes is presented. Both Th(IV) derivatives exhibit strong photoluminescence; in contrast, the U(IV) species are nonemissive.

Calcium Gradient-Doped LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 Cathode for Long Cycle Life Lithium-Ion Batteries

High-voltage spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) has attracted considerable attention as a cathode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its high operating voltage and intrinsically fast lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. However, the practical implementation of LNMO remains limited by its rapid capacity decay, primarily associated with bulk structural instability and parasitic interfacial reactions. To address these issues, we innovatively introduced calcium (Ca) as a dopant to enhance both the oxygen framework and surface stabilities of the LNMO crystal through gradient doping. Observations from the electronic microscopies, X-ray diffraction, and the elemental analysis confirmed that Ca is preferentially enriched at the particle surface, and a disordered crystal phase is preserved in the bulk in the gradient-doped LNMO cathodes. As cathodes in LIBs, the Ca gradient-doped (Ca gr) LNMO materials delivered formation capacities of ∼126−130 mAh/g and exhibited Coulombic efficiencies of 88−95%, which are consistently higher than those of the uniform-doped samples at the same doping level and undoped sample. Especially, the Ca gr 0.05 LNMO cathode demonstrated significantly improved rate capability with ∼113 mAh/g preserved at 10 C, while ∼92 mAh/g and ∼110 mAh/g for undoped and Ca uniform 0.05 LNMO, respectively, and excellent cycling stability, retaining ∼124.1 mAh/g (∼96.3% capacity retention) after 500 cycles. The analysis of cyclic voltammetry, differential capacity, and electrochemical impedance revealed that the excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the structural and morphological advantages of gradient-doped LNMO cathodes with a disordered bulk structure for fast Li + diffusion and a Ca-enriched surface for minimizing the Mn dissolution.

Amorphous ZrCl 4 -Based Superionic Conductor as a Cost-Effective Solid Electrolyte for Batteries

Developing highly conductive and cost-effective solid electrolytes is essential for the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). Zr-based halide electrolytes hold great promise due to their low estimated cost and high oxidation stability. However, the ionic conductivities of most of them are not high enough to enable moderate- and high-rate cycling of ASSBs. Here, fast ion transport is achieved in a group of cost-effective ZrCl 4 -based electrolytes via a design strategy to create highly disordered amorphous structures. Amorphous Li 0.8 ZrCl 4 (SO 4 ) 0.4 , with a low estimated cost of $21 kg –1 , achieves an ionic conductivity of 1.86 mS cm –1 at 25 °C. It also shows a high oxidation limit of 4.5 V vs Li/Li + and good compatibility with high-voltage cathodes, as demonstrated by the stable cycling of ASSBs (73.7% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1 C). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveal that the outstanding conductivity of these amorphous electrolytes is closely related to their short-range and medium-range ordering, revealing new insights for designing high-performance, cost-effective solid electrolytes.

Multiple oxidation states of uranium stabilized by an O , N , O -ligand

Elements of the 5f row maintain a wide variety of oxidation states that have been exploited in synthesis, catalysis, and separations. Herein, we describe the complexation of an O,N,O chelator, ExPh, with uranium in the (IV) and (VI) (uranyl) oxidation states. These two uranium complexes, U(IV)ExPh and UO 2 ExPh, respectively, were characterized in the solid state via single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis. Electrochemical studies using cyclic voltammetry were employed to investigate the multiple redox events associated with the U(IV) complex. Spectro-electrochemical analysis of U(IV)ExPh provided spectroscopic evidence of a stable U(V) species. Chemical oxidation of U(IV)ExPh allowed isolation of the U(V) complex, U(V)ExPh. All three stable uranium complexes produced in this study were characterized via IR, UV-vis and NMR spectroscopies, and micro-spectrophotometry. On the other hand, efforts to reduce U(IV)ExPh to the corresponding U(III) species or produce this putative complex directly from ExPh failed to yield an isolable product. The stabilization of three formal oxidation states of uranium, coupled with previous lanthanide-row results, paves the way for studies of ExPh and its analogues in minor actinide chemistry.

Experimental equation of state of 11 lanthanide nitrides (NdN to LuN) and pressure induced phase transitions in NdN, SmN, EuN, and GdN

Through an extensive data analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data obtained at pressures up to at least 78 GPa, we report the experimental equations of state for all lanthanide nitrides between NdN and LuN, excluding the radioactive Pm. By fitting the obtained unit cell volumes as a function of pressure with the third order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state, we find that the bulk modulus increases with an increasing lanthanide number from K 0 = 146(12) GPa for NdN to 182(7) GPa in EuN. Hereafter, the bulk modulus reaches a plateau for the rest of the series except for TmN which has a lower bulk modulus. We find that the first derivative of the bulk modulus is around 4 for all compounds except TbN, which displays a significantly different compression behavior. In addition, we find a B1 to B10 pressure-induced phase transition in NdN, SmN, EuN, and GdN at increasingly higher pressures. In fact, we observe that the onset pressure of the phase transition increases linearly with Ln atomic number. From TbN and onwards, we do not observe any sign of a B1 to B10 transition indicating that the transition pressure exceeds the studied pressure range. Therefore, we believe that, for the heavier lanthanides, the linear relationship between the onset pressure and the lanthanide number does not hold and even higher pressures are needed to observe the transition. This coherent study of the series of lanthanide nitrides offers a unique opportunity for benchmark studies of computational methods applied to compounds with 4f electrons.
