Forced response of a cantilever beam with a dry friction damper attached. I - Theory. II - Experiment

A theoretical and experimental study of the forced vibration response of a cantilevered beam with Coulomb damping nonlinearity is described. Viscous damping in the beam is neglected. Beam and dry friction damper configurations of interest for applications to turbine blade vibrations are considered. It is shown that the basic phenomena found by Dowell (1983) for a simply supported beam with an attached dry friction damper of specific geometry also apply to a cantilevered beam and a more general representation of the dry friction damper and its associated mass and stiffness.

An attached flow design of a noninterfering leading edge extension to a thick delta wing

The analytical procedure presented for leading edge extension (LEE) determination, in keeping with such design criteria as noninterference at the wing design point, is applied to thick delta wings. The LEE device thus defined is to be mounted on a wing along a dividing stream surface that is associated with an attached flow design lift coefficient greater than zero. The delta wing in question is of twisted and cambered type. It is demonstrated that span reductions for the candidate LEEs has the most detrimental effect on overall aerodynamic efficiency, irrespective of area or shape.

Attaching Metal Fasteners to Silica Tiles

Stress distributed so high load borne. Fastener bonded in densified hole or captured in plug of similar refractory material, which in turn bonded in hole in parent tile. Plug or bonding distributes mechanical load from fastener to broad region surrounding fastener, reducing local stress concentration and likelihood of breakage. Bonded-plug method has been successful in attaching mechanical fasteners to porous silica refractory tiles used on outer surface of Space Shuttle orbiter.

Analysis of the effects of firing Orbiter primary reaction control system jets with an attached truss structure

A study was conducted to determine the dynamic effects of firing the orbiter primary reaction control jets during assembly of protoflight space station structure. Maximum longeron compressive load was calculated as a function of jet pulse time length, number of jet pulses, and total torque imposed by the reaction control jets. The study shows that it is possible to fire selected jets to achieve a pitch maneuver without causing failure of the attached structure.

Overview of Space Station attached payloads in the areas of solar physics, solar terrestrial physics, and plasma processes

This paper outlines the currently planned utilization of the Space Station to perform investigations in solar physics, solar terrestrial physics, and plasma physics. The investigations and instrumentation planned for the Solar Terrestrial Observatory (STO) and its associated Space Station accommodation requirements are discussed as well as the planned placement of the STO instruments and typical operational scenarios. In the area of plasma physics, some preliminary plans for scientific investigations and for the accommodation of a plasma physics facility attached to the Space Station are outlined. These preliminary experiment concepts use the space environment around the Space Station as an unconfined plasma laboratory. In solar physics, the initial instrument complement and associated accommodation requirements of the Advanced Solar Observatory are described. The planned evolutionary development of this observatory is outlined, making use of the Space Station capabilities for servicing and instrument reconfiguration.

Supersonic, nonlinear, attached-flow wing design for high lift with experimental validation

Results of the experimental validation are presented for the three dimensional cambered wing which was designed to achieve attached supercritical cross flow for lifting conditions typical of supersonic maneuver. The design point was a lift coefficient of 0.4 at Mach 1.62 and 12 deg angle of attack. Results from the nonlinear full potential method are presented to show the validity of the design process along with results from linear theory codes. Longitudinal force and moment data and static pressure data were obtained in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at Mach numbers of 1.58, 1.62, 1.66, 1.70, and 2.00 over an angle of attack range of 0 to 14 deg at a Reynolds number of 2.0 x 10 to the 6th power per foot. Oil flow photographs of the upper surface were obtained at M = 1.62 for alpha approx. = 8, 10, 12, and 14 deg.

Hitchhiker-G: A new carrier system for attached shuttle payloads

A new carrier system has been developed for economical and quick response flight of small attached payloads on the space shuttle. Hitchhiker-G can accommodate up to 750 lb. of customer payloads in canisters or mounted to an exposed plate. The carrier connects to the orbiter's electrical systems and provides up to six customers with standard electrical services including power, real time telemetry, and commands. A transparent data and command system concept is employed to allow the customer to easily use his own ground support equipment and personnel to control his payload during integration and flight operations. The first Hitchhiker-G was successfully flown in January 1986 on STS 61C.

Planetary detection and the astrometric telescope facility - A Space Station attached payload

Astrometric measurements with 1-microarcsec accuracy from the Space Station could reveal terrestrial-sized planets orbiting stars within 10 pc of earth. Interferometry from the Station could furnish the needed acuity, while direct imaging could not. A proposed Astrometric Telescope Facility would be attached to the Station on an equatorial mount and would have a 15-m focal length.

Electron attachment in F2 - Conclusive demonstration of nonresonant, s-wave coupling in the limit of zero electron energy

Dissociative electron attachment to F2 has been observed in the energy range 0-140 meV, at a resolution of 6 meV (full width at half maximum). Results show conclusively a sharp, resolution-limited threshold behavior consistent with an s-wave cross section varying as sq rt of epsilon. Two accurate theoretical calculations predict only p-wave behavior varying as the sq rt of epsilon. Several nonadiabatic coupling effects leading to s-wave behavior are outlined.

An intercomparison technique for measuring thermal attachment cross sections and rate constants in distinct final channels

A new technique is introduced for comparing negative-ion signal rates in which a common ion is produced by dissociative attachment in a series of molecules. Measurements are carried out at electron energies less than 100 MeV and at resolutions of 6-8 MeV (FWHM). The technique is demonstrated by detection of the Cl(-) signal in CFCl3, CCl4, CF2Cl2, 1,1,2-C2Cl3F3, 1,1,1-C2Cl3F3 and C2Cl4. Measurements for 1,1,1-C2Cl3F3 show that there is a significant open channel, other than Cl(-) formation, which accounts for about 60 percent of negative-ion formation in thermal-multiple-collision (swarm) experiments. Channel cross sections and rate constants are given for the process Cl(-)/1,1,1-Cl2Cl3F3, as well as in C2Cl4, for the separate channels Cl(-)/C2Cl4 and C2Cl4(-)/C2Cl4.

Semiautomatic Probe-And-Drogue Attachment Mechanism

Spring-loaded pawls provide quick coupling. As probe enters drogue during coupling, three spring-loaded pawls in probe latch probe in drogue, preventing accidental uncoupling. Then worm-gear mechanism turned by standard 0.25-in. (6.35-mm) tool transfers motion to central threaded shaft, extending cap at tip of probe until all play taken up. This centers probe in drogue and renders coupling pawls to extend again. New mechanism useful for coupling modular components in other applications where ease and security of attachment, precise final alignment, and ease of removal important and where stresses and bending reasonably low.

Cross sections for the dissociative attachment of electrons to NO

Cross sections for the production of O(-) by electron attachment to NO are reported. It is found that the maximum value of the cross section is about 52 percent higher than the measurement of Rapp and Briglia (1965). Cross sections for the process of polar dissociation, e + NO yields N(+) + O(_), have also been measured, and the threshold energy for this process has been obtained.

Electron attachment lineshapes, cross sections and rate constants at ultra-low energies in several halomethyl and haloethyl molecules

Electron attachment lineshapes, cross sections and rate constants are reported for the molecules CH2Br2, CF2Br2, CF3Br, CBrCl3, BrCN, C2H2Br4, CH3l, C2H5l and 1,1,1,-C2Cl3F3. Use is made of the krypton photoionization method. In addition, the signal intercomparison technique is used to obtain individual channel cross sections and rate constants for Br(-) and CN(-) formation from BrCN, and for Br(-) and Br2(-) formation from CF2Br2. Present results in 1,1,1,-C2Cl3F3 using a new ion extraction grid geometry are compared with earlier results, and differences discussed in terms of the electric field equipotentials of two extraction systems used in the present work. Approximate potential energy curves for BrCN are presented, and the temperature dependence of the Br(-) channel cross section discussed.

A pointing system design concept for Space Station attached payloads

A study has been conducted to recommend a pointing system design and architecture that can accommodate the articulated pointing requirements levied on the Space Station Freedom Attached Payload Pointing System. A conceptual design of a control system is developed using classical rate and position control techniques. A high fidelity simulation testbed has been developed as the principal tool for the pointing performance evaluation. Techniques of model reduction are applied to reduce the model order to a manageable size for incorporation into the testbed. The disturbance rich space station environment has been modeled, and nonlinearities such as bearing friction, motor and sensor noise are also considered. Simulations were performed with representatie payloads at nominal pointing orientations. The results show that the tight instrument pointing requirements and the severe Space Station disturbance environment render a marginal performance for a conventional (direct drive and hardmount) gimbal pointing system, particularly for lightweight payloads. A gimbal system that incorporates a passive base isolator and reactionless actuation appears to provide a significant imporvement in pointing performance over the conventional pointing systems.

Conceptual design of a moving belt radiator shuttle-attached experiments: Technical requirement Document

The technical requirements for a shuttle-attached Moving Belt Radiator (MBR) experiment are defined. The MBR is an advanced radiator concept in which a rotating belt radiates thermal energy to space. The requirements for integrating the MBR experiment in the shuttle bay are discussed. Requirements for the belt material and working fluid are outlined along with some possible options. The proposed size and relationship to a full scale Moving Belt Radiator are defined. The experiment is defined with the primary goal of dynamic testing and a secondary goal of demonstrating the sealing and heat transfer characteristics. A perturbation system which will simulate a docking maneuver or other type of short term acceleration is proposed for inclusion in the experimental apparatus. A deployment and retraction capability which will aid in evaluating the dynamics of a belt during such a maneuver is also described. The proposed test sequence for the experiment is presented. Details of the conceptual design are not presented herein, but rather in a separate Final Report.

Electron-impact ionization and electron attachment cross sections of radicals important in transient gaseous discharges

Electron-impact ionization and electron attachment cross sections of radicals and excited molecules were measured using an apparatus that consists of an electron beam, a molecular beam and a laser beam. The information obtained is needed for the pulse power applications in the areas of high power gaseous discharge switches, high energy lasers, particle beam experiments, and electromagnetic pulse systems. The basic data needed for the development of optically-controlled discharge switches were also investigated. Transient current pulses induced by laser irradiation of discharge media were observed and applied for the study of electron-molecule reaction kinetics in gaseous discharges.
