Mars Pathfinder Surface Operations Verification

Over 20 years have passed since NASA's Viking landers traveled to the surface of Mars. But now NASA is returning, in fact, it's already on the way with one of NASA's faster, better, cheaper missions known as Mars Pathfinder. This mission was developed in 3 years for $171 million dollars and is focused on engineering, science, and technology objectives.

Risk/Requirements Trade-off Guidelines for Low Cost Satellite Systems

The accelerating trend toward faster, better, cheaper missions places increasing emphasis on the trade-offs between requirements and risk to reduce cost and development times, while still improving quality and reliability. The Risk/Requirement Trade-off Guidelines discussed in this paper are part of an integrated approach to address the main issues by focusing on the sum of prevention, analysis, control, or test (PACT) processes.

Small Spacecraft Technology

Aerospace designers are aggressively pursuing new ideas in advanced technology for smaller spacecraft. NASA's 'faster, better, cheaper' philosophy is the driving force to accomplish higher level scientific exploration more efficiently. More memory and higher performance is packed into computer hardware that takes up a fraction of the space of earlier generation spacecraft. Current technology is described.

Low-Cost Mission Operations

This paper discusses the transition between traditional planetary missions (requiring constant operational control and limited in size only by booster capability) and the cheaper missions of the New Millennium spacecraft, which will be smaller and will have a great deal of autonomy.

Reengineering the Project Design Process

In response to NASA's goal of working faster, better and cheaper, JPL has developed extensive plans to minimize cost, maximize customer and employee satisfaction, and implement small- and moderate-size missions. These plans include improved management structures and processes, enhanced technical design processes, the incorporation of new technology, and the development of more economical space- and ground-system designs. The Laboratory's new Flight Projects Implementation Office has been chartered to oversee these innovations and the reengineering of JPL's project design process, including establishment of the Project Design Center and the Flight System Testbed. Reengineering at JPL implies a cultural change whereby the character of its design process will change from sequential to concurrent and from hierarchical to parallel. The Project Design Center will support missions offering high science return, design to cost, demonstrations of new technology, and rapid development. Its computer-supported environment will foster high-fidelity project life-cycle development and cost estimating.

Remote Objects Message Exchange (ROME)

The performance of a single program running on a single processor is limited by the character of the processor. Moreover, the cost and difficulty of developing and sustaining programs tend to increase as their size and complexity increase. Clearly there ought to be some advantage in partitioning powerful application software in relatively small and simple components that can run in parallel on multiple processors; the software should run faster and it should be cheaper and easier to deploy. Remote Objects Message Exchange (ROME) is an attempt to provide a single relatively simple, universally available abstraction for data communication among C++ objects. It aims to enable the C++ application developer to specify objects' interactions with other objects wholly in terms of the application domain, without concern for details of interprocess communication. Every ROME-compliant object is conceptually a network peer of every other, as if each one were (for example) a separate UNIX process.

JPL Rover Technology Program

NASA has embarked on a new mission concept for its planetary program. This new mission concept calls for smaller, lower mass, cheaper systems. The Mars Pathfinder micro rover mission scheduled for launch in 1996 embodies this new mission concept.

ASF Design Considerations for Radarsat/ERS-2

This paper examines the requirements and the design considerations of the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ground data system for the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks (UAF) for the new era of Radarsat/ERS-2 missions. These include a new data acquisition planning capability to manage more satellites with global planning and to manage more than one instrument mode; a new archive strategy that is cheaper, faster, and better; a product generation system to produce data on demand and to produce data for the varied instruments and modes; and a product verification ability for the new and old products. In response to these new functional requirements, JPL is using a design approach that emphasizes an open systems, client/server architecture based on industry standards and commercial off-the-shelf technology.

A Tool for Automatic Verification of Real-Time Expert Systems

The creation of an automated, user-driven tool for expert system development, validation, and verification is curretly onoging at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In the new age of faster, better, cheaper missions, there is an increased willingness to utilize embedded expert systems for encapsulating and preserving mission expertise in systems which combine conventional algorithmic processing and artifical intelligence. The once-questioned role of automation in spacecraft monitoring is now becoming one of increasing importance.

Validation and verification of deep-space missions

The growing technical complexity of and increased cost pressure on deep-space science missions poses challenges for the system engineering discipline of mission validation and verification. In the wake of several recent mission failures, the aerospace community is still searching for a stable middle ground between the highly-reliable yet cost-prohibitive approaches of the past and cheaper but excessively risky methods of project implementation.
