Data-Driven Surrogate Modeling with Microstructure-Sensitivity of Viscoplastic Creep in Grade 91 Steel

Abstract To support the development of advanced steel alloys tailored to withstand extreme conditions, it is imperative to account for the mechanical performance of components, while considering the influence of local microstructure on the macroscopic response. To this end, this study focuses on the development of microstructure-sensitive constitutive models for the mechanical response of Grade 91 steel exposed to extreme thermo-mechanical environments. Polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) surrogates are used to emulate high-fidelity polycrystal simulations of the viscoplastic response of Grade 91 steel as a function of the microstructure fingerprint (e.g., dislocations and precipitates). To cover a wide temperature–stress domain, two separate PCE surrogates—one that captures softening and the other that captures hardening behavior—are combined using another (sparse) Gaussian process regression model. The resulting constitutive creep surrogate model is integrated within the MOOSE finite element framework to simulate the intricate effects of microstructure, in particular MX-phase precipitates, on a component with a graded microstructure. Surrogate sensitivity analysis is applied to quantify the relevant impact of spatially varying microstructure on the creep response in a test-case involving a Grade 91 alloy with a prototypical weld.

Grid Parameters and Voltage Estimation Approach Integrating Data-Driven Converter Model

With Measurements of grid voltage and current are essential for the optimal operation of the grid protection and control (P&C) systems. Grid parameters vary through time during the faults and especially in the converter interfaced resources (CIRs) rich power grid, and thus accurate estimation is critical to avoid the mis-operation of the P&C systems. In this paper, a moving horizon estimation (MHE) as an observer is devised and applied to estimate the grid line parameters and grid voltages for protection enhancement. Due to the proprietary and confidentiality of CIRs, the proposed approach uses the black-box model to represent their dynamics. Leveraging the easily accessible measurements of output current from the black-box model of CIR and voltage at the point of common coupling, the proposed method estimates the grid impedance and grid voltage during normal and faulty operating conditions. The performance shows that the optimization-based observer was able to closely observe the accurate states and parameters, which can be utilized by the P&C systems.

Defining a Platform Approach and Market Participation: Data Driven Business Models for Solid State Transformer-Based Synthetic Inertia and Voltage Stability Controls (CRADA Final Report, Project 1, Mod 1)

The primary objective of this project is to determine the incremental value created with the medium voltage solid-state transformer (MV SST) technology to different stakeholders in view of the updated DER grid regulations. This includes studying the benefits of the MV SST technology in a range of use cases for EV and DER penetration including (1) “corridor charging” for EVs and (2) solar plus storage (FERC 2222). The potential customers of this technology include utilities for EV charging, DER installers who must meet utility interconnection requirements, balancing authorities, and DER aggregators. The traditional transformers on the grid could be a limiting factor for the EV-grid integration as the distribution transformers were not designed to handle the dynamic and fluctuating EV charging loads. Thus, the issues such as voltage fluctuations, increased losses and reduced efficiency [1] can negatively impact the grid operation. To address these challenges, transformers with flexibility and adaptability become imperative to meet the evolving energy demands. In this regard, the concept of Medium Voltage Solid-State Transformers.
