A novel approach to a PPM-modulated frequency-doubled electro-optic cavity-dumped Nd:YAG laser

A technique which can provide frequency doubling, with high efficiency, while cavity dumping a laser for pulse position M-ary modulation while being used for an optical communication link is discussed. This approach uses a secondary cavity that provides feedback of the undoubled fundamental light, which is normally lost, into the primary cavity to be recirculated and frequency doubled. Specific operations of the electrooptic modulator and frequency-doubling crystal are described along with the overall modulation scheme and experimental setup.

Double Differential Encoding And Detection In MPSK

Proposed communication system based on multiple-phase-shift-keying (MPSK) modulation includes double differential encoder in transmitter and double differential detector in receiver. Transmitter generates phase-modulated signal suitable for decoding and detection by subsystem. Detector removes Doppler-frequency component from noisy, Doppler-shifted signal encoded in subsystem. Overall effect of double-differential scheme to cancel effect of Doppler shift on modulation in received signal. Not necessary to estimate Doppler shift to correct for it.

Double-Swivel Mechanism For Reliable Release

Double-swivel toggle mechanism releases large, heavy objects reliably. Double-swiveling action of mechanism ensures it clears restraining pins upon release. Pins retain toggle and its load. If pin fails to withdraw at designated time for releasing payload, toggle swivels about its upper ball, and ring swivels about lower ball so ring flange clears failed pin. Double-swivel action ensures disengagement even it two pins fail to withdraw.

0108 + 388 - A compact double source with surprising properties

49 cm, 6 cm, and 20 cm observations of the compact double ratio source 0108 + 388 are presented. Extended emission about 20 deg to the east of the core is detected which resembles a hot spot/lobe with a bridge of emission extending back to the core. This is the first detection of extended emission associated with such a source, and it is inconsistent with the suggestion that such sources are very young classical double radio sources. The inconsistency can be reconciled if the activity in this object is recurrent and the emission is the relic of a previous epoch of activity. Alternatively, the source may be a normal-aged radio galaxy in which most of the radio-emitting plasma is currently unable to escape the nuclear regions of the galaxy. The steep low-frequency spectrum of the core is probably related to the origin of the compact double and suggests that both components are very sharply confined on both their inner and outer edges.

Double face sealing device

A double face sealing device is disclosed for mounting between two surfaces to provide an air-tight and fluid-tight seal between a closure member bearing one of the surfaces and a structure or housing bearing the other surface which extends around the opening or hatchway to be closed. The double face sealing device includes a plurality of sections or segments mounted to one of the surfaces, each having a main body portion, a pair of outwardly extending and diverging, cantilever, spring arms, and a pair of inwardly extending and diverging, cantilever, spring arms, an elastomeric cover on the distal, free ends of the outwardly extending and diverging spring arms, and an elastomeric cover on the distal, free, ends of the outwardly extending and diverging spring arms, and an elastomeric cover on the distal, free ends of the inwardly extending and diverging spring arms. The double face sealing device has application or use in all environments requiring a seal, but is particularly useful to seal openings or hatchways between compartments of spacecraft or aircraft.

Evidence of chaotic pattern in solar flux through a reproducible sequence of period-doubling-type bifurcations

Presented here is a preliminary study of the limits to solar flux intensity prediction, and of whether the general lack of predictability in the solar flux arises from the nonlinear chaotic nature of the Sun's physical activity. Statistical analysis of a chaotic signal can extract only its most gross features, and detailed physical models fail, since even the simplest equations of motion for a nonlinear system can exhibit chaotic behavior. A recent theory by Feigenbaum suggests that nonlinear systems that can be led into chaotic behavior through a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations will exhibit a universal behavior. As the control parameter is increased, the bifurcation points occur in such a way that a proper ratio of these will approach the universal Feigenbaum number. Experimental evidence supporting the applicability of the Feigenbaum scenario to solar flux data is sparse. However, given the hypothesis that the Sun's convection zones are similar to a Rayleigh-Bernard mechanism, we can learn a great deal from the remarkable agreement observed between the prediction by theory (period doubling - a universal route to chaos) and the amplitude decrease of the signal's regular subharmonics. The authors show that period-doubling-type bifurcation is a possible route to a chaotic pattern of solar flux that is distinguishable from the logarithm of its power spectral density. This conclusion is the first positive step toward a reformulation of solar flux by a nonlinear chaotic approach. The ultimate goal of this research is to be able to predict an estimate of the upper and lower bounds for solar flux within its predictable zones. Naturally, it is an important task to identify the time horizons beyond which predictability becomes incompatible with computability.

Time and polarization dependent double scattering calculations of lidar returns from water clouds

We describe and present results of a double scattering lidar model which we use to calculate lidar returns from water clouds. The model is used in conjunction with the Phillips Laboratory's (Geophysics Directorate) low altitude Nd:YAG lidar system to determine microphysical properties of water clouds. The model determines the Stokes parameters of the backscattered lidar radiation, from media composed of spherical particles, as a function of time. The Stokes parameters of the radiation of the lidar return are determined, at each time, by considering all radiation which has traveled the same path length from transmitter to receiver while making two successive single scatters. Each single scatter is considered a Mie scatter. We have also developed a Mie scattering program for use with the double scattering model. Each single scatter takes into account the polarization of the incident and scattered radiation. Inputs to the double scattering mode include the receiver area and field of view, the receiver integration time, the extinction coefficient as a function of distance into the cloud, the particle size distribution (assumed independent of position), and the complex index of refraction of the spherical particles.

The scaling of relativistic double-year widths - Poisson-Vlasov solutions and particle-in-cell simulations

The study of relativistic plasma double layers is described through the solution of the one-dimensional, unmagnetized, steady-state Poisson-Vlasov equations and by means of one-dimensional, unmagnetized, particle-in-cell simulations. The thickness vs potential-drop scaling law is extended to relativistic potential drops and relativistic plasma temperatures. The transition in the scaling law for 'strong' double layers suggested by analytical two-beam models by Carlqvist (1982) is confirmed, and causality problems of standard double-layer simulation techniques applied to relativistic plasma systems are discussed.

On the stability of strong double layers

For a strong, stationary double layer to be maintained, the electron flux Phi(e) and the ion flux Phi(i) must satisfy the Langmuir condition Phi(e)/Phi(i) = sq rt m(i)/m(e). However, this condition alone does not determine whether or not the double layer will remain in stable equilibrium at a given position. A new stability condition is obtained, and the results of several laboratory double layer experiments are examined using this condition.

Double layer propagation in experiments with electron beam injection

Electron beam injection into a plasma is investigated using the analytical inverted Bernstein-Green-Kruskal method. Particle number and momentum conservation laws are applied to evaluate the propagation velocity and potential drop on the leading edge of the beam. Electric potential is supposed to be monotonic, thus the leading front has a double-layer-like structure. For the case of cold particles, analytical expressions for the double layer velocity and potential drop are obtained. It is pointed out that double layer velocity differs from the initial electron speed: even for weak beams a noticeable deceleration takes place. Strong beams are found incapable of penetrating into plasma - their propagation velocity is very small. Ambient electrons undergo a considerable acceleration forming a return current which neutralizes the injector. Possible instability of the distribution functions is discussed.

Characterization of a Nd:YAG doubled pulsed laser system

A description of a frequency doubled, double pulsed Nd:YAG laser that is to be used to pump an injection locked Ti:Sapphire power oscillator is presented. These two lasers make up the transmitter portion of the Lidar Atmospheric Sensing Experiment (LAWSE) instrument. LASE is a Lidar/DIAL experiment that is to measure water vapor in the troposphere. By utilizing the twin concept, both pulses can be produced with a single laser system, thereby minimizing cost, size, and weight. Alignment problems associated with having two separate lasers each produce one of the twin pulses are also alleviated. The LASE transmitter consists of a doubled pulsed Nd:YAG laser that will pump a Ti:Sapphire power oscillator that will be injection-locked by a diode laser. The wavelength of the Ti:Sapphire output will be tunable from 813 to 818 nm. A performance summary of the pump laser is given. The data verify that the pump laser can meet the performance requirements to pump the Ti:Sapphire power oscillator.

Double-loop frequency selective surfaces for multi frequency division multiplexing in a dual reflector antenna

A multireflector antenna utilizes a frequency-selective surface (FSS) in a subreflector to allow signals in two different RF bands to be selectively reflected back into a main reflector and to allow signals in other RF bands to be transmitted through it to the main reflector for primary focus transmission. A first approach requires only one FSS at the subreflector which may be an array of double-square-loop conductive elements. A second approach uses two FSS's at the subreflector which may be an array of either double-square-loop (DSL) or double-ring (DR). In the case of DR elements, they may be advantageously arranged in a triangular array instead of the rectangular array for the DSL elements.

Near-infrared imaging of Markarian 231: Evidence for a double nucleus

Near-infrared (1.2-2.4 micrometers) images are presented for the central 10 arcsec of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Markarian 231. We find a faint, but intrinsically luminous (M(sub k) approximately -20.7) secondary peak in the near-infrared light distribution approximately 3.5 arcsec (2.7 kpc) south of the primary Seyfert 1 nucleus. Since there is no optical or infrared evidence for ongoing star formation at the location of this secondary peak, and its near-infrared luminosity and color are comparable to slightly reddened spiral bulges or elliptical nuclei, we identify this peak with the stripped nucleus of the companion galaxy involved in the Mrk 231 merger event. Depending upon the exact ratio of the masses of the primary and secondary nucleus in the Mrk 231 system we estimate a merger time scale of less than or equal to 10(exp 9) yr. The morphology of the southern nucleus suggests that it may have recently survived a close passage (r less than 200 pc) with the Seyfert 1 nucleus on a highly elliptical orbit, in which case the merger time scale may be significantly shorter (approximately 10(exp 7) yr. We re-calculate the average merger time scale for the seven ultraluminous infrared galaxies with double nuclei in the Bright Galaxy Sample (the BGS) of Soifer et al. (AJ, 98, 766 (1989)) and derive a value of approximately 10(exp 8) yr. Since seven of ten of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies in the BGS are now known to be double, we estimate the ultraluminous 'phase' may be close to this value. Along with Arp 220 and Mrk 273, Mrk 231 is the third member of the class to possess a high brightness temperature non-thermal radio core and a double nucleus, suggesting the time scale for the generation or fueling of the active nucleus can be much less than the dynamical time scale for the merger of the progenitor nuclei.

Modeling the double-trough structure observed in broad absorption line QSOs using radiative acceleration

We present a model explaining the double trough, separated by delta v approximately = 5900 km/s, observed in the C IV lambda-1549 broad absorption line (BAL) in a number of BALQSOs. The model is based on radiative acceleration of the BAL outflow, and the troughs result from modulations in the radiative force. Specifically, where the strong flux from the Lyman-alpha lambda-1215 broad emission line is redshifted to the frequency of the N V lambda-1240 resonance line, in the rest frame of the accelerating N V ions, the acceleration increases and the absorption is reduced. At higher velocities the Lyman-alpha emission is redshifted out of the resonance and the N V ions experience a declining flux which causes the second absorption trough. A strongly nonlinear relationship between changes in the flux and the optical depth in the lines is shown to amplify the expected effect. This model produces double troughs for which the shallowest absorption between the two troughs occurs at v approximately = 5900 km/s. Indeed, we find that a substantial number of the observed objects show this feature. A prediction of the model is that all BALQSOs that show a double-trough signature will be found to have an intrinsic sharp drop in their spectra shortward of approximately 1200 A.

Double-polytropic closure in the magentosheath

The magnetosheath plasma is usually neither isotropic nor adiabatic. This paper contains an attempt to decribe its thermodynamic properties in terms of two polytropic laws, p(sub perpendicular)/rho B(exp gamma(sub perpendicular)-1) = C(sub perpendicular) and p(sub parallel)B(exp gamma(sub parallel)-1)/rho(exp gamma(sub parallel)) = C(sub parallel), such that for gamma(sub perpendicular) = 2, gamma(sub parallel) = 3 the usual Chew-Goldberger-Low double-adiabatic expressions are recovered and for gamma(sub perpendicular) = 1, gamma(sub parallel) = 1 double-isothermal conditions are obtained. Using data from the AMPTE/IRM spacecraft, we show that the subsolar magnetosheath plasma may be better described by the double-polytropic laws than by the mirror instability threshold, in particular in the low beta region near the magnetopause. The inferred polytropic exponents vary from event to event but are typically in the ranges of gamma(sub perpendicular) = 0.94 +/- 0.10 and gamma(sub parallel) = 1.14 +/- 0.13 for the 29 cases we have examined.

New double-byte error-correcting codes for memory systems

Error-correcting or error-detecting codes have been used in the computer industry to increase reliability, reduce service costs, and maintain data integrity. The single-byte error-correcting and double-byte error-detecting (SbEC-DbED) codes have been successfully used in computer memory subsystems. There are many methods to construct double-byte error-correcting (DBEC) codes. In the present paper we construct a class of double-byte error-correcting codes, which are more efficient than those known to be optimum, and a decoding procedure for our codes is also considered.

A Study of Free-Piston Double-Diaphragm Drivers for Expansion Tubes

In recent years the free-piston double-diaphragm driver has been used to increase the performance of the XI pilot expansion tube to super-orbital test conditions. However, the actual performance of the double-diaphragm driver was found to be considerably less than ideal. An experimental study of the double-diaphragm driver was carried out on the XI facility over a range of conditions with the objective of determining the effect of. heat losses; and the non-ideal rupture of the 'light' secondary diaphragm on the driver performance. The disparity between the theoretical and measured performance envelope are highlighted. A viscous limit for the experiments vas established. Heat transfer behind the primary shock is shown to be the mechanism behind this limit Incident, reflected and transmitted shock trajectories for the secondary diaphragm were experimentally determined and compared with computed trajectories from a one-dimensional diaphragm inertia model. It was found that the diaphragm did influence the unsteady expansion. A good agreement between experimental and computed shock trajectories was obtained using a diaphragm inertia model assuming that the diaphragm mass became negligible 3 microns after shock impact.
