Earth system dynamics: The interrelation of atmospheric, ocean and solid earth dynamics

The research work performed during the time period 16 Oct. 1992 through 31 Dec. 1993 is summarized. The overall research activity, including a list of the major findings of the EOS IDS research to date, is described, the publications and presentations are listed, and a budget request for the subsequent year is attached. Specifically, the report covers: EOS panel activities; major findings of research; team member contributions; new research directions; EOS restructuring effect; changes in requirements; plans for using existing data; collaborations with other EOS and non-EOS investigations; EOS instrument team interaction; instrument development verification and validation; interaction with EOSDIS and DAAC's; team coordination; overall management; summary of response to site review questions and comments; science computing facility; and additional new research activities.

Mission planning for an Earth observation low Earth orbiter: ERS-1

ERS-1, the first European Remote Sensing satellite, has a payload which consists primarily of microwave instruments and is in a polar sun-synchronous orbit. All ground and on-board activities from user requests to delivery of data products are combined into one integrated system. In view of the high number of products which can be generated by ERS-1, the Mission Planning System (MPS), which plans the on-board activities of ERS-1, is an essential tool for operations since manual planning of the large number of daily operations is out of the question. In addition the MPS, in line with the integrated nature of the ERS-1 system, also plans activities at the prime ground station, including among others, the operation of the payload data processing systems there. This paper outlines the operations concepts for ERS-1 mission planning, and describes the Mission Planning System used at the ERS-1 Control Center. Novel functionalities, such as automatic resource clash resolution, are described. A critical discussion gives lessons learned for future mission planning systems.

Impact of interference on the receiving systems of the Deep-Space Network (DSN) Earth stations operated by NASA due to adjacent band emissions from Earth exploration satellites operating in the 8025-

This paper will first describe the characteristics of interference from a typical EESS satellite, including the intensity, frequency and duration of such interference. The paper will then discuss the DSN interference susceptibility, including the various components in the receiving systems that are susceptible to interference and the recovery time after a strong interference. Finally, the paper will discuss the impact of interference on science data and missions operations.

Low-Earth-Orbit and Geosynchronous-Earth-Orbit Testing of 80 Ah Batteries under Real-Time Profiles

To date the LEO battery has completed 5000 nominal cycles. The EODV is trending down by 50mV per 1000 cycles. To date the GEO battery has completed 2 nominal shadow periods and currently in sunlight period. Batteries testing after one year looks encouraging for aerospace application. There are no discrepancies between the current data and extensive testing conducted at Saft over the past 5 years.

Earth Global Reference Atmospheric Model 2007 (Earth-GRAM07)

GRAM is a Fortran software package that can run on a variety of platforms including PC's. GRAM provides values of atmospheric quantities such as temperature, pressure, density, winds, constituents, etc. GRAM99 covers all global locations, all months, and heights from the surface to approx. 1000 km). Dispersions (perturbations) of these parameters are also provided and are spatially and temporally correlated. GRAM can be run in a stand-alone mode or called as a subroutine from a trajectory program. GRAM07 is diagnostic, not prognostic (i.e., it describes the atmosphere, but it does not forecast). The source code is distributed free-of-charge to eligible recipients.

An Overview of the Compensated Earth-Moon-Earth Laser Link (CEMERLL) Experiment

Adaptive optics can mitigate the turbulence-induced wavefront distortions that limit the minimum practical beam divergence in a ground-to-space optical link, and enable high intensity laser beam propagation through the atmosphere. The CEMERLL experiment will use laser guide star adaptive optics to transmit a near-diffraction-limited laser beam from the Starfire Optical Range to the Apollo lunar retro-reflectors. The experiment will validate theoretical models that predict the effect of atmospheric turbulence on uncompensated and compensated laser beam propagation, and explore strategies to compensate for atmosphere-induced wavefront tilt not corrected for by laser guide star adaptive optics.
