Evidence for extended IR emission in NGC2798 and NGC6240

Extended emission at 10 and 20 microns can be used to distinguish starbursts from monsters as the underlying energy source driving the luminous infrared emission in the central regions of galaxies. The spatial extent of the mid infrared emission in the interacting galaxy NCG 2798 and the merger NGC 6240 were investigated. The 10 and 20 micron profiles of the IR source in NGC 2798 are significantly wider than beam profiles measured on a standard star, supporting a starburst interpretation of its IR luminosity. For NGC 6240 there is marginal evidence for an extended 10 micron source, suggesting that a significant fraction of its IR luminosity could be produced by a burst of star formation.

Extended far-infrared emission associated with mass outflows from young stars: L1551 IRS 5

Coadded IRAS survey data have been examined in the L1551 region. Extended low-surface-brightness 60 and 1200-micron emission is aligned with the molecular outflow from L1551 IRS 5. The morphology and the uniform surface brightness and color temperature of the IR emission suggest that the wind from IRS 5 is the source of this emission. It is suggested that radiative heating of grains by photons generated at the stellar wind/cloud interface is a major contributor to the extended infrared emission.

Robustness of extended-Kalman-type observers

Robustness properties of extended-Kalman-type observers are investigated for linear plants when actuators and sensors have non-linearities or linear dynamics. Sufficient conditions for the stability of the estimation error are obtained for time-varying extended Kalman filters (EKF) for time-varying plants, and for constant-gain, exponentially weighted EKF for time-invariant plants. When the non-linearities are known only within bands of uncertainty, it is proved that the observer is non-divergent.

Energetic electrons in impulsive and extended solar flares as deduced from flux correlations between hard X-rays and microwaves

The peak flux relationship between hard X-rays and microwaves from solar flares is studied using about 400 events simultaneously recorded with the hard X-ray burst spectrometer on the SMM satellite and the Nobeyama 17 GHz radiometer. The data indicate that the hard X-ray and microwave peak fluxes correlate best for X-ray energies of less than about 80 keV for impulsive flares and greater than about 360 keV for extended flares. By postulating that electrons responsible for microwave emission at 17 GHz are those emitting hard X-rays at these photon energies, it is concluded that: (1) in impulsive flares, microwaves at about 20 GHz are emitted mainly by electrons of less than about 200 keV from a layer through which the electrons stream down into the thick-target hard X-ray source; and (2) in extended flares, microwaves are emitted mainly by MeV electrons trapped in a coronal loop or loops.

Predictability in the extended range

This paper describes the results of extended range predictability experiments using an efficient two-level spherical quasi-geostrophic model. The experiments have an initial rms doubling time of about two days. This growth rate, along with an initial error of about one-half the initial error of present operational models, produces an rms error equal to the climatological rms error and a correlation of 0.5 on about day 12 of the forecast. On the largest scales, this limiting point is reached shortly thereafter. The error continues to grow at a decreasing rate until at about 30 days the forecast skill is extremely small and comparable to the skill of a persistence forecast. Various time averages at various lags are examined for skill in the extended range. Filters that weighted most strongly in the initial forecast days provide increased skill.

Kinematics and ionization of extended gas in active galaxies. IV - The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388

The results of direct CCD imaging and long-slit medium-dispersion spectroscopy of the extended narrow-line-emitting gas in the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388 are presented. The spectra are used to investigate the distribution, kinematics, and ionization structure of the excited gas in the regions surrounding the nucleus out to a distance of about 4.8 kpc. The data support earlier suggestions that the galaxy, which appears to lie near the core of the Virgo cluster, has been tidally distorted, possibly by the nearby cluster core galaxies M84 or IC 3303. Much of the highly ionized gas in the galaxy appears to be distributed in two wide cones originating from the nucleus and extending above and below the disk. Explanations are offered for the distribution of this gas and for the remainder of the gas above and below the disk.

Topological defects in extended inflation

The production of topological defects, especially cosmic strings, in extended inflation models was considered. In extended inflation, the Universe passes through a first-order phase transition via bubble percolation, which naturally allows defects to form at the end of inflation. The correlation length, which determines the number density of the defects, is related to the mean size of bubbles when they collide. This mechanism allows a natural combination of inflation and large scale structure via cosmic strings.

Baryogenesis in extended inflation. 2: Baryogenesis via primordial black holes

Baryogenesis at the end of extended inflation is studied. Extended inflation is brought to an end by the collisions of bubble walls surrounding regions of true vacuum, a process which produces particles well out of thermal equilibrium. The possibility that the wall collisions may provide a significant density of primordial black holes is considered and their possible role in generating a baryon asymmetry is examined.

Analysis of an extended period of earthward plasma sheet flow at about 220 R(E) - CDAW 8

The interpretation of the ISEE 3 earthward flow events observed during an extended period on January 29, 1983 is addressed in terms of a neutral line moving beyond roughly 220 earth radii. This concept was tested for consistency with current magnetospheric and solar wind observations. A broad range of additional data including Dynamics Explorer auroral imaging and a wide variety of ground-based measurements from the eighth Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW 8) was available. The distant neutral line location within the context of the distant tail, geostationary orbit, auroral zone, and associated solar wind data is analyzed, based on an extended version of the Coraniti and Kennel (1972) flaring tail theory. It is concluded, from known solar wind conditions that, for a typical neutral line location at about 135 earth radii, an increase of about 30 percent of the near-earth lobe field strength would be required to cause the distant neutral line to move tailward beyond 220 earth radii. The question of why substorms did not terminate the growth phase earlier is also addressed.

Seasat over-land scatterometer data. II - Selection of extended area land-target sites for the calibration of spaceborne scatterometers

The post-launch performance verification for future scatterometers can use extended area land targets to calibrate antenna gain patterns and to verify and monitor deployment configurations. For the Ku-band Seasat scatterometer, a region of tropical rain forest in the Amazon basin was used as a homogeneous extended-area land target. As this region is continuously being deforested, other regions are investigated for calibrating scatterometers. The global backscatter coefficients (sigma0) are compared to classifications of natural vegetation and cultivation intensity and the variability with time during the three-month mission is studied. The statistical variability of sigma0 is compared with prior estimates resulting from the known variability of the instrument parameters and communication noise. Data from selected forested regions with relatively homogeneous sigma0 and little time-dependence are presented.

Extended implicit model following as applied to integrated flight and propulsion control

An extended model-following control-synthesis method, including loop-transfer recovery, is presented and applied to synthesize control laws for integrated flight and propulsion control (IFPC). The vehicle considered is representative of an unstable modern fighter aircraft; with a two-dimensional thrust-vectoring and thrust-reversing nozzle. The linearized design model includes both airframe and engine dynamics. A model-following formulation of the LQR problem is extended to handle this hybrid problem. Compensators are then obtained to realize an output-feedback control law, by using a loop-transfer-recovery procedure. The airframe and engine responses are decoupled, and perfect airframe response following is obtained. The loop transfers also reveal good stability robustness and reasonable loop cross-over frequencies that would not lead to excessive actuation requirements.

Representing object oriented specifications and designs with extended data flow notations

The issue of using extended data flow notations to document object oriented designs and specifications is discussed. Extended data flow notations, for the purposes here, refer to notations that are based on the rules of Yourdon/DeMarco data flow analysis. The extensions include additional notation for representing real-time systems as well as some proposed extensions specific to object oriented development. Some advantages of data flow notations are stated. How data flow diagrams are used to represent software objects are investigated. Some problem areas with regard to using data flow notations for object oriented development are noted. Some initial solutions to these problems are proposed.

False-vacuum decay in generalized extended inflation

False-vacuum decay was studied in context of generalized extended inflationary theories, and the bubble nucleation rates was computed for these theories in the limit of G(sub N) yields 0. It was found that the time dependence of the nucleation rate can be exponentially strong through the time dependence of the Jordan-Brans-Dicke field. This can have a pronounced effect on whether extended inflation can be successfully implemented.

Observations of extended and counterrotating disks of ionized gas in S0 galaxies

While many E/S0 galaxies have been found to show emission line spectra in their nuclear regions, the question of the presence and nature of extended disks of ionized gas in these galaxies has been addressed only in recent years. Typically the ionized gas is detected in the inner region on a scale of approx. 1 kpc (e.g., Phillips et al. 1986, Caldwell 1984). Here researchers present evidence that the disks of ionized gas of at least some S0 galaxies are much more extended than previously believed. In addition, with the detection of the counterrotation of gas and stars in NGC 7007 they strengthen the basis for arguments that the source of gas in S0 galaxies is external

SIMS analysis of extended impact features on LDEF experiment

Discussed here are the first Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) analysis of projectile material deposited in extended impact features on Ge wafers from the trailing edge. Although most capture cells lost their plastic film covers, they contain extended impact features that apparently were produced by high velocity impacts when the plastic foils were still intact. Detailed optical scanning of all bare capture cells from the trailing edge revealed more than 100 impacts. Fifty-eight were selected by scanning electron microscope (SEM) inspection as prime candidates for SIMS analysis. Preliminary SIMS measurements were made on 15 impacts. More than half showed substantial enhancements of Mg, Al, Si, Ca, and Fe in the impact region, indicating micrometeorites as the projectiles.

A knowledge based application of the extended aircraft interrogation and display system

A family of multiple-processor ground support test equipment was used to test digital flight-control systems on high-performance research aircraft. A unit recently built for the F-18 high alpha research vehicle project is the latest model in a series called the extended aircraft interrogation and display system. The primary feature emphasized monitors the aircraft MIL-STD-1553B data buses and provides real-time engineering units displays of flight-control parameters. A customized software package was developed to provide real-time data interpretation based on rules embodied in a highly structured knowledge database. The configuration of this extended aircraft interrogation and display system is briefly described, and the evolution of the rule based package and its application to failure modes and effects testing on the F-18 high alpha research vehicle is discussed.

Engineering and operational characteristics of the extended duration orbiter

A program is being pursued to lengthen the mission duration of the Space Shuttle from 10 days to 16 days, with future plans to increase the on-orbit stay time to 28 days. Presently, the length of the mission is limited by fuel cell reactants, stowage constraints, and life-support system consumables. In December 1988, NASA gained approval to begin the design and development of the extensive modifications to OV-102 Columbia required to extend its mission duration to 16 days. Additionally, OV-105 Endeavour is now being manufactured so as not to preclude its transformation to a 28-day vehicle in the future, should that program gain subsequent approval and funding. The first extended duration orbiter (EDO) launch of Columbia is slated for March 1992 with the US microgravity laboratory (USML) as its payload. Scientific payloads such as the USML and Spacelab, which require longer periods of zero gravity or the vacuum of space, will greatly benefit from the EDO program.

IRAS observations of extended dust envelopes around evolved stars

Deconvolved IRAS profiles, with resolution 2-3 time better than detector sizes 1.5 and 3 arcmin at 60 and 100 microns, are presented for a number of evolved stars with extended emission. These include VY UMa, Mu Cep, S Sct, U Hya, Y CVn, U Ant, alpha Ori, Y Pav, UU aur, IRC + 10216, RZ Sgr, and R Lyr. Simple models suggest that extended IRAS emission results from stars which greater mass loss rates in the past, rather than from stars with large current mass loss rates.
