The DECam MAGIC Survey: Investigating the Jet Stellar Stream with Photometric Metallicities

Stellar streams are dynamically fragile structures formed by the tidal disruption of dwarf galaxies and stellar clusters. These objects are valuable tracers of the gravitational potential and accretion history of the Milky Way, and are key probes for the presence and interactions of starless dark matter subhalos. The Jet stream is a $\sim 30^\circ$-long stellar stream that is situated at 30.4 kpc and originates from a disrupted globular cluster. It consists of metal-poor stars that follow a retrograde orbit, reducing the impulse imparted from the Milky Way bar and making it especially sensitive to gravitational perturbations from dark matter subhalos. This paper investigates the known extent of the Jet stream by leveraging photometric metallicities derived from a narrowband filter centered on the Ca II H&K lines at $\sim$3950A on the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), as part of the Mapping the Ancient Galaxy in CaHK (MAGIC) survey. The wide field-of-view of DECam enables the efficient derivation of photometric metallicities for stars across the full extent of the stream, allowing for a metallicity-based selection to identify likely members. We demonstrate the efficacy of photometric metallicities in isolating stream members when used with Gaia DR3 proper motions, identifying a sample of 213 candidate Jet stream member stars. This then allows for the study of stream morphology, through which we identify a clear fanning of the stream toward the end farther from the Milky Way bar. We provide a list of candidate members, enabling spectroscopic follow-up of the Jet stream to facilitate further studies of its dynamics.

Amplitude analysis of ψ3686→γKS0KS0

Using (2712 ± 14) × 106ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform the first amplitude analysis of the radiative decay ψ3686→γKS0KS0$$ \psi (3686)\to \gamma {K}_S^0{K}_S^0 $$ within the mass region MKS0KS0<2.8$$ {M}_{K_S^0{K}_S^0}<2.8 $$ GeV/c2. Employing a one-channel K-matrix approach for the description of the dynamics of the KS0KS0$$ {K}_S^0{K}_S^0 $$ system, the data sample is well described with four poles for the f0-wave and three poles for the f2-wave. The determined pole positions are consistent with those of well-established resonance states. The observed f0 and f2 states are found to be in agreement with those produced in radiative J/ψ decays. The production behaviors of f0 and f2 poles in ψ3686→γKS0KS0$$ \psi (3686)\to \gamma {K}_S^0{K}_S^0 $$ are qualified with their residues and the converted branching fractions. By comparing with J/ψ→γKS0KS0$$ J/\psi \to \gamma {K}_S^0{K}_S^0 $$ decay, the ratios Bψ3686→γf0,2BJ/ψ→γf0,2$$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left(\psi (3686)\to \gamma {f}_{0,2}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left(J/\psi \to \gamma {f}_{0,2}\right)} $$ are determined, which provides crucial experimental inputs on the internal structure of the f0,2 states, especially their potential mixing with glueball components.

Observation of the W -Annihilation Process D s + → ω ρ + and Measurement of D s + → ϕ ρ + in D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 Decays

We present the first amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 , using e + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb − 1 , and report the first observation of the pure W -annihilation decay D s + → ω ρ + with a branching fraction of ( 0.99 ± 0.0 8 stat − 0.07 + 0.05 syst ) % . In comparison to the low significance of the D wave in the decay D s + → ϕ ρ + , the dominance of the D wave over the S and P waves, with a fraction of ( 51.85 ± 7.2 8 stat − 7.90 + 4.83 syst ) % observed in the decay D s + → ω ρ + , provides crucial information for the “polarization puzzle,” as well as for the understanding of charm meson decays. The branching fraction of D s + → π + π + π − π 0 π 0 is measured to be ( 4.41 ± 0.1 5 stat ± 0.1 3 syst ) % . Moreover, the branching fraction of D s + → ϕ ρ + is measured to be ( 3.98 ± 0.3 3 stat − 0.19 + 0.21 syst ) % , and the R ϕ = B ( ϕ → π + π − π 0 ) / B ( ϕ → K + K − ) is determined to be ( 0.222 ± 0.01 9 stat − 0.016 + 0.016 syst ), which is consistent with the previous measurement based on charm meson decays, but deviates from the results from e + e − annihilation and K − N scattering experiments by more than 3 σ . Grid Strength Assessment for High Levels of Inverter-based Resources in the Puerto Rico Power

A system-wide assessment of the Puerto Rico power system grid strength is studied when considering high levels of inverter-based resource penetration. This study is carried out in PSSE and assesses the impact of inverter-based resource (IBR) contributions in response to three-phase ground faults. A hypothetical 100% inverter-based generation scenario is created to assess the extreme impact on short circuit levels and a realistic scenario is considered to assess the impact to short circuit ratios. The overall conclusion is that short circuit capacity and current will drastically decrease in a high IBR scenario, an effect that is quantified in this paper. The short circuit ratio metric is typically used to assess the impact of IBR but generally overestimates grid strength due to not accounting for the impact from multiple IBRs. Other methods such as equivalent circuit based short circuit ratio and weighted short circuit ratio offer a more comprehensive consideration for multiple IBRs and can better account for their mutual interactions. The work presented in this paper is part of the PR100 study.

Stability enhancement module for grid-following converters: Hardware implementation and validation

Low-frequency oscillations limit power delivery of voltage-source converter interfaced resources, for example, wind and solar, operating in grid-following control mode. Our prior research identified the instability mechanism as the coupling between real power and voltage at point of common coupling. In turn, a stability enhancement control was proposed to weaken the coupling by introducing a simple voltage-based feedback loop. The stability enhancement control has been validated via electromagnetic transient simulation testbeds. The objectives of this paper are (a) to provide a more insightful explanation of the enhancement module by examining the impedance of the grid-following converter and (b) to verify the performance of the stability module using a hardware testbed. The theoretic examination demonstrates that stability enhancement module effectively reduces the negative resistance effect of $Z_{qq}$ and thus boosts stability. The experimental research leads to a hardware testbed of a grid-following converter with the ability of demonstrating low-frequency oscillations. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed stability enhancement control and the readiness of commercial realization of the stability enhancement unit.

A Top-Down Strategy to Engineer ActiveLayer Morphology for Highly Efficient and Stable All-Polymer Solar Cells

A major challenge hindering the further development of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) employing polymerized small-molecule acceptors is the relatively low fill factor (FF) due to the difficulty in controlling the active-layer morphology. The issues typically arise from oversized phase separation resulting from the thermodynamically unfavorable mixing between two macromolecular species, and disordered molecular orientation/packing of highly anisotropic polymer chains. Herein, a facile top-down controlling strategy to engineer the morphology of all-polymer blends is developed by leveraging the layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition. Optimal intermixing of polymer components can be achieved in the two-step process by tuning the bottom-layer polymer swelling during top-layer deposition. Consequently, both the molecular orientation/packing of the bottom layer and the molecular ordering of the top layer can be optimized with a suitable top-layer processing solvent. A favorable morphology with gradient vertical composition distribution for efficient charge transport and extraction is therefore realized, affording a high all-PSC efficiency of 17.0% with a FF of 76.1%. The derived devices also possess excellent long-term thermal stability and can retain >90% of their initial efficiencies after being annealed at 65 °C for 1300 h. In conclusion, these results validate the distinct advantages of employing an LBL processing protocol to fabricate high-performance all-PSCs.

Eliminating the Burn‐in Loss of Efficiency in Organic Solar Cells by Applying Dimer Acceptors as Supramolecular Stabilizers

Abstract The meta‐stable active layer morphology of organic solar cells (OSCs) is identified as the main cause of the rapid burn‐in loss of power conversion efficiency (PCE) during long‐term device operation. However, effective strategies to eliminate the associated loss mechanisms from the initial stage of device operation are still lacking, especially for high‐efficiency material systems. Herein, the introduction of molecularly engineered dimer acceptors with adjustable thermal transition properties into the active layer of OSCs to serve as supramolecular stabilizers for regulating the thermal transitions and optimizing the crystallization of the absorber composites is reported. By establishing intimate π‐π interactions with small‐molecule acceptors, these stabilizers can effectively reduce the trap‐state density (N t ) in the devices to achieve excellent PCEs over 19%. More importantly, the lowN t associated with an initially optimized morphology can be maintained under external stresses to significantly reduce the PCE burn‐in loss in devices. This research reveals a judicious approach to improving OPV stability by establishing a comprehensive correlation between material properties, active‐layer morphology, and device performance, for developing burn‐in‐free OSCs.

Regulation of Side‐Chain Symmetry for Delaying Triplet Formation and Suppressing Non‐Radiative Loss in Organic Solar Cells

Abstract The structural revolutions of non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have driven continuous efficiency breakthroughs in organic solar cells (OSCs). Rational regulation of NFA structures toward efficient exciton dissociation and mitigated non‐radiative recombination is pivotal for OSCs. The incorporation of asymmetric side chains on NFAs can often achieve these goals by inducing a desirable aggregate state. However, it lacks the studies to directly correlate the side‐chain symmetry of NFAs with the exciton delocalization and triplet dynamics in OSCs. Herein, The influence of structural symmetry on the aggregate properties is systematically investigated and exciton/charge dynamics based on two developed biaxial‐conjugated NFAs with varied side‐chain symmetry. The symmetric NFA having diverse molecular packing orientations can form multiple charge transfer channels in its blend with polymer donor, which cannot be found in that comprising the asymmetric ones. Moreover, a slower rate and lower ratio of the spin‐triplet state are formed in the blend of symmetric NFA, resulting in a much lower non‐radiative voltage loss in corresponding OSCs. This study reveals the distinct advantages of symmetric NFAs in both aggregate properties and exciton/charge dynamics over those of asymmetric ones, paving the way for developing high‐performance OSCs using easier‐to‐prepare, low‐cost symmetric materials.

Flux Upcycling of Degraded Layered Cathodes to LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 (NMCs) with Gradient Transition Metal Distribution

The rising demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has intensified the need for efficient recycling methods to address both supply chain constraints and environmental impacts. Direct upcycling, distinguished by its ability to achieve both the structural and compositional integrity of cathode materials, has gained prominence as a sustainable alternative to conventional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes. However, the current direct upcycling methods are typically limited by incorporating Li and/or Ni, significantly constraining the adaptability across diverse LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 (NMCs). Here, in this study, a versatile molten salt approach is reported that expands the scope of direct upcycling by enabling simultaneous incorporation of Li, Ni, and Mn. This methodology facilitates flexible conversion among diverse NMC compositions, including non-stoichiometric Co/Mn systems such as upcycling degraded LiCoO 2 (D-LCO), LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 (D-NMC111), LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (D-NMC811) to surface Mn enriched NMC111, LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC532), and NMC811, respectively. The gradient transition metal distribution in upcycled products, characterized by Mn-enriched outer layers and Co/Ni-enriched cores enhances the interfacial stability of NMC cathodes, addressing critical challenges in long-term performance and structural integrity. These results highlight the potential of flux methods for advancing the upcycling of spent cathodes and producing high-performance materials for next-generation LIBs applications.
