Development of Hierarchical Control for a Lunar Habitat DC Microgrid Model Using Power Hardware-in-the-Loop

As interest in space exploration grows, developing a lunar habitat has become a key component of extending missions into deep space. To guarantee reliable power management of a habitat’s DC microgrid, control schemes are needed that can manage the different assets (batteries, photovoltaics, loads) effectively. Proposed hierarchical control schemes are further developed into hardware solutions using Opal-RT’s real-time simulation software and Power Hardware-in-the-Loop platform. Experimental results of a simulated DC microgrid and physical DC/DC components can allow better realization and performance of applications such as battery discharge control.

Supervisory On-line Optimal Control of an Electric Power Microgrid Design for Lunar Habitation

The following article describes an optimal control algorithm for the operation and study of an electric microgrid designed to power a lunar habitat. A photovoltaic (PV) generator powers the habitat and the presence of predictable lunar eclipses necessitates a system to prioritize and control loads within the microgrid. The algorithm consists of a reduced order model (ROM) that describes the microgrid, a discretization of the equations that result from the ROM, and an optimization formulation that controls the microgrid’s behavior. In order to validate this approach, the paper presents results from simulation based on lunar eclipse information and a schedule of intended loads.

Development of an Adaptive Droop Control Method for Interconnected Lunar DC Microgrids Using Power Hardware-in-the-Loop

NASA’s Artemis Program outlines the need for a habitat capable of sustaining human life as well as mining and producing raw materials on the lunar surface. This mission is viewed as a means towards deeper space exploration, with plans for reaching Mars and beyond. Human presence on the moon is not possible without the ability to generate and distribute energy, namely electricity, through a network of energy sources, loads, and power converters called a microgrid. Multiple microgrids can be deployed on the moon based on location and need. Separate microgrids will require interconnection to increase resiliency and reliability given the mission’s high criticality. A method for adaptive control over power converters connecting two dc microgrids is proposed. A simulation is modeled after the lunar power system with two approaches to power converter droop control, allowing for a more flexible and adaptive microgrid architecture. Further experiments are conducted using the control methods in a power hardware-in-the-loop test environment to study the performance of hardware converter control used in this application.

Passive high-power-density grid interface device

A hybrid switched capacitor power converter for high-power applications is provided. The converter has a transistor-switched input-stage boost converter followed by a capacitor-and-diode ladder circuit. The converter is adapted to produce an output voltage of at least 5 kV at a power level of at least 0.5 kW. The ladder circuit includes one or more multi-stage rails.
