Heat Exchangers Circuitry Optimization using Low-GWP Refrigerants in Reversible Heat Pump Applications

Tube-fin heat exchangers (TFHX) are widely used in heat pump applications. Circuitry optimization can improve system performance. Previous optimizations focus on improving component-level performance under a specific operating condition, i.e., the TFHX either works as a condenser or an evaporator. The optimal circuitry obtained under air conditioning (AC) mode cannot guarantee optimal performance when used in heat pump (HP) mode. This study implements a bi-objective formulation to achieve optimal system performance in both AC and HP modes. An integer permutation-based Genetic Algorithm is integrated with Heat Pump Design Model (HPDM) to perform heat pump optimization. Six refrigerants, i.e., R410A, R452B, R454B, R32, D2Y60 and L41a are investigated. Case studies show that optimal heat exchangers yield 2.1%-6.1% EER improvement under AC mode and 1.9%-8.5% COP improvement under HP mode. Use of this design approach can help assure a preferable performance of reversible heat pumps during both cooling and heating mode usage.

Impact of refrigerant undercharge faults on building indoor conditions and HVAC system operation in residential Buildings: A simulation study

This study investigates the impact of refrigerant undercharge on indoor temperature and HVAC system performance in residential buildings. Simulation models for typical residential buildings in Orlando, FL and Indianapolis, IN were developed using the ResStock database. A refrigerant undercharge fault model was then applied to the simulations with varying levels of fault intensity. The paper offers an extensive analysis, revealing that variations in supply air temperature, equipment runtime, and cooling energy consumption due to the level of refrigerant undercharge faults are notably significant on a summer representative day. Similarly, on a winter representative day, changes in supply air temperature and runtime are significant as well as changes in supplemental heat energy consumption. We find that occupants may remain oblivious to these faults during the cooling season, particularly when the HVAC system is oversized; in that case, supply air temperature data could help detect a fault. Another challenge is that during the heating season, when the supplemental heater operates, it is difficult to identify a refrigerant undercharge fault using only indoor and supply air temperature data. Finally, this study finds that supply air temperature, equipment runtime, and supplemental heater energy consumption data can help in detecting refrigerant undercharge faults.

Procurement Options for Low Temperature Geothermal Technologies at Federal Facilities

Federal agencies are moving towards more efficient and resilient facilities by increasingly implementing energy projects in an effort to meet federally mandated goals, agency needs, and administration priorities. Low temperature geothermal technologies, which include geothermal heat pumps (GHP) and district heating systems, can contribute to meeting these goals. These technologies provide facilities with heating and cooling while reducing facility energy use and improving resilience. However, in order to implement these solutions, federal facilities must identify and execute a strategy for the procurement of these technologies. Federal facilities have successfully completed energy efficiency projects using a variety of procurement options. The purpose of this document is to provide federal agencies with a comprehensive overview of the procurement options available for low temperature geothermal technologies and other energy efficiency projects. The procurement options discussed include third-party financing mechanisms such as energy saving performance contracts (ESPCs), ESPC energy sales agreements (ESPC ESAs), and utility energy service contracts (UESCs), as well as dedicated funds in the form of federal grants and appropriated funds.

Solar-pumped lasers for space power transmission

Multi-Megawatt CW solar-pumped lasers appear to be technologically feasible for space power transmission in the 1990s time frame. A new concept for a solar-pumped laser is presented which utilizes an intermediate black body cavity to provide a uniform optical pumping environment for the lasant, either CO or CO2. Reradiation losses are minimized with resulting high efficiency operation. A 1 MW output laser may weigh as little as 8000 kg including solar collector, black body cavity, laser cavity and ducts, pumps, power systems and waste heat radiator. The efficiency of such a system will be on the order of 10 to 20%. Details of the new concept, laser design, comparison to competing solar-powered lasers and applications to a laser solar power satellite (SPS) concept are presented.

Phase-Change Heat-Storage Module

Heat-storage module accommodates momentary heating or cooling overload in pumped-liquid heat-transfer system. Large heat-storage capacity of module provided by heat of fusion of material that freezes at or near temperature desired to maintain object to be heated or cooled. Module involves relatively small penalties in weight, cost, and size and more than compensates by enabling design of rest of system to handle only average load. Latent heat of fusion of phase-change material provides large heat-storage capacity in small volume.

Exploratory study of temperature oscillations related to transient operation of a Capillary Pumped Loop heat pipe

An analytical study has been conducted for better understanding of a peculiar transient behavior which was displayed in testing of a Capillary Pumped Loop (CPL) heat pipe system. During several test runs of this CPL system varying degrees of surface temperature oscillations occurred in the inlet line of the evaporators. Although several theories have been forwarded to explain this observed phenomenon, a satisfactory understanding of causes of these oscillations is still missing. The present investigation derives the conditions which lead to such oscillatory temperature behavior in evaporator inlet section of the mentioned CPL system. Stability characteristics of these temperature oscillations were investigated.

Investigation of thermal-fluid mechanical characteristics of the Capillary Pump Loop

The main purpose is the experimental and analytical study of behavior of the Capillary Pump Loop (CPL) heat pipe system during the transient mode of operating by applying a step heat pulse to one or more evaporators. Prediction of the CPL behavior when subjected to pulse heat loading requires further study before the transient response of CPL system can be fully understood. The following tasks are discussed: (1) exploratory testing of a CPL heat pipe for transient operational conditions which could generate the type of oscillatory inlet temperature behavior observed in an earlier testing of NASA/GSFC CPL-2 heat pipe system; (2) analytical investigation of the CPL inlet section temperature oscillations; (3) design, construction and testing of a bench-top CPL test system for study of the CPL transient operation; and (4) transient analysis of a CPL heat pipe by applying a step power input to the evaporators.

Thermal control technologies for Europa Clipper mission

The Europa Clipper Mission to Europa, a moon of Jupiter, is planned for a launch in 2023. Since Europa is at a large distance (5.6 A.U.) from the Sun, the solar flux is less than 4% of that at Earth. This requires very large solar arrays to meet the power demands of a typical new mission concept. Hence, conservation of power for use in thermal control is extremely important. To achieve this goal a mechanically pumped fluid loop heat rejection system (HRS) is utilized to harvest waste heat from the spacecraft components. In addition to this, several thermal control technologies are employed. They include a high performance dual Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) blanket design to minimize the large majority of heat loss from the spacecraft; two passive thermal control valves in series to greatly reduce the heat loss from the HRS to its radiator; and a low temperature louver to further reduce the loss from the radiator. This paper will describe these technologies, schemes for their implementation, and results of development tests to validate their performance.

Heating performance of a vapor compression heat pump cascaded with a thermoelectric heat pump

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are widely utilized for heating and cooling in residential buildings; however, their effectiveness in heating mode is compromised during extreme weather conditions. Extensive research endeavors have been undertaken to develop, test, and assess a cost-effective vapor compression ASHP suitable for cold climate regions. Further, this study takes an innovative approach by developing component and system prototypes for a cold climate heat pump. This design combines a thermoelectric heat pump (TEHP) with a traditional residential split ASHP to augment heating capacity in low ambient temperature conditions. The component and system prototypes underwent experimental testing in the psychrometric chambers. The experimental findings revealed a 13.6% to 13.7% increase in total heat pump heating capacity, accompanied by a 3.1% to 5.0% decrease in the coefficient of performance (COP) at ambient temperatures of -15°C and -19°C, when compared to the original ASHP. The COP of the TEHP is relatively constant, ranging from 1.63 to 1.76. This prototype offers a solution to address the challenges associated with reduced heat pump capacity at low ambient temperatures. The experimental results indicated that the lower the ambient temperature, thermoelectric heat pump auxiliary heating can increase the heating efficiency 60% in comparison to electric resistance.
