LAMPS software

The dynamic prediction model along with its macro-processor capability and data flow system from the Drexel Limited-Area and Mesoscale Prediction System (LAMPS) were converted and recorded for the Perkin-Elmer 3220. The previous version of this model was written for Control Data Corporation 7600 and CRAY-1a computer environment which existed until recently at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The purpose of this conversion was to prepare LAMPS for porting to computer environments other than that encountered at NCAR. The emphasis was shifted from programming tasks to model simulation and evaluation tests.

Satellite Precipitation and Cloud Experiment (SPACE)

An experiment plan was formulated to support an investigation of the precipitation processes associated with mesoscale systems and the interaction of rain producing cloud complexes with the meso and macro-scale environment. The field program necessary to accomplish the scientific goals is designed to incorporate satellite information (VIS and IR as well as VAS data), special radiosonde and surface observing capabilities, radar observations of storms development, special observations from aircraft and ground based lightning measurements. The observing network comprises rawinsonde stations located in northern Alabama and eastern Tennessee. A high density raingauge network and the MSFC lightning location network also cover the area. Coordination with NASA U2 and ER2 aircraft programs and with the operational requirements of the microburst severe thunderstorm program can assure the most efficient utilization of the observing resources.

Development of the Centralized Storm Information System (CSIS) for use in severe weather prediction

The centralized storm information system is now capable of ingesting and remapping radar scope presentations on a satellite projection. This can be color enhanced and superposed on other data types. Presentations from more than one radar can be composited on a single image. As with most other data sources, a simple macro establishes the loops and scheduling of the radar ingestions as well as the autodialing. There are approximately 60 NWS network 10 cm radars that can be interrogated. NSSFC forecasters have found this data source to be extremely helpful in severe weather situations. The capability to access lightning frequency data stored in a National Weather Service computer was added. Plans call for an interface with the National Meteorological Center to receive and display prognostic fields from operational computer forecast models. Programs are to be developed to plot and display locations of reported severe local storm events.

Effect of stress concentrations in composite structures

The goal of achieving a better understanding of the failure of complex composite structure is sought. This type of structure requires a thorough understanding of the behavior under load both on a macro and micro scale if failure mechanisms are to be understood. The two problems being studied are the failure at a panel/stiffener interface and a generic problem of failure at a stress concentration.

Nonlinear analysis for high-temperature multilayered fiber composite structures

A unique upward-integrated top-down-structured approach is presented for nonlinear analysis of high-temperature multilayered fiber composite structures. Based on this approach, a special purpose computer code was developed (nonlinear COBSTRAN) which is specifically tailored for the nonlinear analysis of tungsten-fiber-reinforced superalloy (TFRS) composite turbine blade/vane components of gas turbine engines. Special features of this computational capability include accounting of; micro- and macro-heterogeneity, nonlinear (stess-temperature-time dependent) and anisotropic material behavior, and fiber degradation. A demonstration problem is presented to mainfest the utility of the upward-integrated top-down-structured approach, in general, and to illustrate the present capability represented by the nonlinear COBSTRAN code. Preliminary results indicate that nonlinear COBSTRAN provides the means for relating the local nonlinear and anisotropic material behavior of the composite constituents to the global response of the turbine blade/vane structure.

Role of Hydrogen and Structure on CMSX-2

The goal was to characterize and understand the detailed effect of hydrogen on the tensile and fatigue behavior of single crystals of CMSX-2. Specimens were solutionized, air cooled, and then aged in one of two ways. The resultant macro and microstructure included a pronounced dendritic structure with numerous low angle boundaries in the interdendritic region and on the average a high level of porosity with a large variation in size and distribution. Hydrogen permeability and diffusivity in this material was found to be very low at room temperature. Hydrogen concentration studies on thin samples yielded values significantly higher than found for similar charging conditions in nickel and stainless steels. The tensile mechanical properties were found to depend on hydrogen concentration. SEM observations of the brittle subsurface zone revealed a strong correlation between crack initiation sites and voids just beneath the surface. The hollow and solid samples were compared to better understand the influence of increased charged volume on the fatigue behavior.

Shaded-Color Picture Generation of Computer-Defined Arbitrary Shapes

SHADE computer program generates realistic color-shaded pictures from computer-defined arbitrary shapes. Objects defined for computer representation displayed as smooth, color-shaded surfaces, including varying degrees of transparency. Results also used for presentation of computational results. By performing color mapping, SHADE colors model surface to display analysis results as pressures, stresses, and temperatures. NASA has used SHADE extensively in sign and analysis of high-performance aircraft. Industry should find applications for SHADE in computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. SHADE written in VAX FORTRAN and MACRO Assembler for either interactive or batch execution.

Solidification Fundamentals

The fundamental aspects of a variety of solidification phenomena were studied, taking advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the microgravity environment of space. Containerless processing and an understanding of the role of fluids induced by gravitational effects are the two major objectives justifying an experimental program in reduced gravity. The solidification phenomena which are likely to benefit are: macro and microsegregation, columnar-equiaxed transition, pore formation, and undercooling.

Parallel computation with the force

A methodology, called the force, supports the construction of programs to be executed in parallel by a force of processes. The number of processes in the force is unspecified, but potentially very large. The force idea is embodied in a set of macros which produce multiproceossor FORTRAN code and has been studied on two shared memory multiprocessors of fairly different character. The method has simplified the writing of highly parallel programs within a limited class of parallel algorithms and is being extended to cover a broader class. The individual parallel constructs which comprise the force methodology are discussed. Of central concern are their semantics, implementation on different architectures and performance implications.

SSME structural dynamic model development, phase 2

A set of test correlated mathematical models of the SSME High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump (HPOTP) housing and rotor assembly was produced. New analysis methods within the EISI/EAL and SPAR systems were investigated and runstreams for future use were developed. The LOX pump models have undergone extensive modification since the first phase of this effort was completed. The rotor assembly from the original model was abandoned and a new, more detailed model constructed. A description of the new rotor math model is presented. Also, the pump housing model was continually modified as additional test data have become available. This model is documented along with measured test results. Many of the more advanced features of the EAL/SPAR finite element analysis system were exercised. These included the cyclic symmetry option, the macro-element procedures, and the fluid analysis capability. In addition, a new tool was developed that allows an automated analysis of a disjoint structure in terms of its component modes. A complete description of the implementation of the Craig-Bampton method is given along with two worked examples.

A system for conducting igneous petrology experiments under controlled redox conditions in reduced gravity

The Space Shuttle and the planned Space Station will permit experimentation under conditions of reduced gravitational acceleration offering experimental petrologists the opportunity to study crystal growth, element distribution, and phase chemistry. In particular the confounding effects of macro and micro scale buoyancy-induced convection and crystal settling or floatation can be greatly reduced over those observed in experiments in the terrestrial laboratory. Also, for experiments in which detailed replication of the environment is important, the access to reduced gravity will permit a more complete simulation of processes that may have occurred on asteroids or in free space. A technique that was developed to control, measure, and manipulate oxygen fugacites with small quantities of gas which are recirculated over the sample is described. This system should be adaptable to reduced gravity space experiments requiring redox control. Experiments done conventionally and those done using this technique yield identical results done in a 1-g field.

Acousto-ultrasonic measurements to monitor damage during fatigue of composites

An acousto-ultrasonic nondestructive testing method used to monitor damage during static and fatigue loading of thin graphite epoxy laminates is described. The experimental procedure, the signal analysis by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm, and the results of this analysis are discussed. Quasi-static tension tests showed a sharp decrease in the quantitative parameters when transverse cracks developed in the 90 degrees plies of a (0, 90/2/)s laminate. When internal micro-delaminations unite to form macro-delaminations, a sharp decrease in the parameters is also observed. The parameters are found to correlate well with other indications of damage development such as stiffness and degradation. The root mean square value of the moment is found to be more sensitive to damage than stiffness. Various signals and spectrums of graphite epoxy systems are presented.

Effect of R(3+) ions on the structure and properties of lanthanum borate glasses

The present investigation of glass formation in the (mole percent) systems 25La2O3 (x)R2O3 (75-x)B2O3, where R = Al, Ga, and (25-x)La2O3 (x)Ln2O3 75B2O3, where Ln = Gd, Er, Y, notes that up to 25 mol pct Al2O3 or Ga2O3 can be substituted for B2O3, while no more than about 5 mol pct Ln2O3, substituted for La2O3, caused macro-phase separation. The substitution of either R2O3 or Ln2O3 in the lanthanum borate system changes the separation distance between adjacent B3O6 chains. The effect of this structural change on the molar volume, transformation temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, and transformation-range viscosity is discussed.
