Apollo/Saturn C00.00.19.3 operations and maintenance. Cathodic protection of communication cables

Operating and maintenance instructions for cathodic protection of communication cables at the Cape Kennedy Launch Complex are presented. The system is designed to prevent or arrest corrosion of communication cables buried in soil or submerged in water by impressing sufficient direct current from the rectifier through the anodes to the cable. This process neutralizes or counteracts current flowing from the cable into the soil or water, thus preventing or arresting corrosion of the cable sheath material.

Operations and maintenance manual, atmospheric contaminant sensor, revision B

The sensor is a mass spectrometer system which continuously monitors the atmospheric constituents of hydrogen, water vapor, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, and monitors the Freons on a demand sampling basis. The manual provides a system description, operational procedures, and maintenance and troubleshooting instructions. Circuit diagrams are included.

Flight Crew Health Maintenance

The health maintenance program for commercial flight crew personnel includes diet, weight control, and exercise to prevent heart disease development and disability grounding. The very high correlation between hypertension and overweight in cardiovascular diseases significantly influences the prognosis for a coronary prone individual and results in a high rejection rate of active military pilots applying for civilian jobs. In addition to physical fitness the major items stressed in pilot selection are: emotional maturity, glucose tolerance, and family health history.

ERTS orbit maintenance

Error drift in the ERTS orbit maintenance problem is determined from the actual ground trace errors that the spacecraft experienced over the first 3 1/2 repeat cycles. Actual data are fitted to a parametric model of ground trace error by a least squares method, and initial offsets to these key parameters as well as their rates of change are extrapolated forward analytically to obtain the future ground trace drift in orbital estimates.

The Space Shuttle Main Engine and its maintenance features

The Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) is a reusable, high-performance rocket engine being developed to satisfy the performance, life, reliability, and operational requirements of the Space Shuttle Orbiter. The design includes simple, low-cost maintenance features resulting from a viable maintainability program dedicated to minimizing engine cost per flight.

Orbital assembly and maintenance study

The requirements, conceptual design, tradeoffs, procedures, and techniques for orbital assembly of the support structure of the microwave power transmission system and the radio astronomy telescope are described. Thermal and stress analyses, packaging, alignment, and subsystems requirements are included along with manned vs. automated and transportation tradeoffs. Technical and operational concepts for the manned and automated maintenance of satellites were investigated and further developed results are presented.

The effect of low light intensity on the maintenance of circadian synchrony in human subjects

Experiments were conducted on six healthy male subjects aged 20-23 yr and exposed for 21 days in a confined regulated environment to 16L:8D light:dark cycle with a view toward determining whether the light environment of 16L:8D at the relatively low light intensity of 15 ft.c. is adequate for the maintenance of circadian synchrony in man. The light intensity was 100 ft.c. during the first seven days, reduced to 15 ft.c. during the next seven days, and increased again to 100 ft.c. during the last seven days. Rectal temperature (RT) and heart rate (HR) were recorded throughout the three phases. In the 100 ft.c. regime, the RT and HR rhythms remained stable and circadian throughout. It is shown that 15 ft.c. light intensity is at or below threshold for maintaining circadian synchrony of human physiologic rhythms marked by instability and internal desynchronization with degradation of performance and well-being.

Availability and mean time between failures of redundant systems with random maintenance of subsystems

It is shown how the availability and MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) of a redundant system with subsystems maintenanced at the points of so-called stationary renewal processes can be determined from the distributions of the intervals between maintenance actions and of the failure-free operating intervals of the subsystems. The results make it possible, for example, to determine the frequency and duration of hidden failure states in computers which are incidentally corrected during the repair of observed failures.

Reliability based fatigue design and maintenance procedures

A stochastic model has been developed to describe a probability for fatigue process by assuming a varying hazard rate. This stochastic model can be used to obtain the desired probability of a crack of certain length at a given location after a certain number of cycles or time. Quantitative estimation of the developed model was also discussed. Application of the model to develop a procedure for reliability-based cost-effective fail-safe structural design is presented. This design procedure includes the reliability improvement due to inspection and repair. Methods of obtaining optimum inspection and maintenance schemes are treated.

Maintenance cost study of rotary wing aircraft

The feasibility was studied of predicting rotary wing operation maintenance costs by using several aircraft design factors for the aircraft dynamic systems. The dynamic systems considered were engines, drives and transmissions, rotors, and flight controls. Multiple regression analysis was used to correlate aircraft design and operational factors with manhours per flight hour, and equations for each dynamic system were developed. Results of labor predictions using the equations compare favorably with actual values.

Maintenance and operations cost model for DSN subsystems

A procedure is described which partitions the recurring costs of the Deep Space Network (DSN) over the individual DSN subsystems. The procedure results in a table showing the maintenance, operations, sustaining engineering and supportive costs for each subsystems.

A maintenance model for k-out-of-n subsystems aboard a fleet of advanced commercial aircraft

Proposed highly reliable fault-tolerant reconfigurable digital control systems for a future generation of commercial aircraft consist of several k-out-of-n subsystems. Each of these flight-critical subsystems will consist of n identical components, k of which must be functioning properly in order for the aircraft to be dispatched. Failed components are recoverable; they are repaired in a shop. Spares are inventoried at a main base where they may be substituted for failed components on planes during layovers. Penalties are assessed when failure of a k-out-of-n subsystem causes a dispatch cancellation or delay. A maintenance model for a fleet of aircraft with such control systems is presented. The goals are to demonstrate economic feasibility and to optimize.
