Taking aim at the wino-Higgsino plane with the LHC

In this work we explore multiple search strategies for Higgsinos and mixed Higgsino-wino states in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and project the results onto the ( μ , M 2 ) plane. Assuming associated production of Higgsino-like pairs with a W / Z boson, we develop a search in a channel characterized by a hadronically tagged vector boson accompanied by missing energy. We use as our template an ATLAS search for dark matter produced in association with a hadronically decaying vector boson, but upgrade the search by implementing a joint-likelihood analysis, binning the missing transverse energy distribution, which greatly improves the search sensitivity. For Higgsino-like states (more than 96% admixture) we find sensitivity to masses up to 550 GeV. For well-mixed Higgsino-wino states (70–30% Higgsino) we still find sensitivities above 300 GeV. Using this newly proposed search, we draw a phenomenological map of the wino-Higgsino parameter space, recasting several complementary searches for disappearing tracks, soft leptons, trileptons, and hadronic diboson events in order to predict LHC coverage of the ( μ , M 2 ) mass plane at integrated luminosities of up to 3 ab − 1 . Altogether, the full run of the HL-LHC can exclude much of the “natural” ( μ , M 2 < 500 GeV ) wino-Higgsino parameter space. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Tuning the charge transfer character of the multiexciton state in singlet fission

Intramolecular singlet fission (SF) produces the multiexciton correlated triplet pair state, (T 1 T 1 ), prior to the formation of free triplet excitons. The nature of the multiexciton state is complex, as generation of the (T 1 T 1 ) state may involve a charge transfer (CT) intermediate and has been shown to have both mixed electronic and spin characters. According to transient absorption spectroscopy, a linear terrylene-3,4:11,12-bis(dicarboximide) dimer (TDI 2 ) exhibits solvent-dependent excited-state dynamics. As solvent polarity increases from 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (ε = 2.2) to chlorobenzene (ε = 5.6) to 1,2-dichlorobenzene (ε = 9.9), the SF rate in TDI2 increases and the multiexciton state, which can be thought of as a linear combination of the 1 (S 1 S 0 ), CT, and (T 1 T 1 ) states, gains more CT character. Eventually, the CT state becomes a trap state as indicated by symmetry-breaking charge separation in TDI2 in pyridine (ε = 12.3). The dielectric environment influences not only the SF rate and the relative contributions of the 1 (S 1 S 0 ), CT, and (T 1 T 1 ) states to the overall multiexciton state but also the rate at which the state mixing evolves, with faster dynamics in higher polarity solvents. More importantly, the tunability and presence of strong CT character in the multiexciton state have implications for SF applications since they often rely on electron transfer from the free triplet excitons. This enhanced CT character in the (T 1 T 1 ) state may assist with two-electron transfer directly from the (T 1 T 1 ) state, allowing for facile extraction of charges in intramolecular SF systems whose (T 1 T 1 ) states do not always efficiently dissociate to two triplet excitons.

Commensurate states and pattern switching via liquid crystal skyrmions trapped in a square lattice

Using continuum based simulations we show that a rich variety of skyrmion liquid crystal states can be realized in the presence of a periodic obstacle array. As a function of the number of skyrmions per obstacle we find hexagonal, square, dimer, trimer and quadrimer ordering, where the n-mer structures are a realization of a molecular crystal state of skyrmions. As a function of external field and obstacle radius we show that there are transitions between the different crystalline states as well as mixed and disordered structures. Here, we discuss how these states are related to commensurate effects seen in other systems, such as vortices in type-II superconductors and colloids interacting with two dimensional substrates.

Electroweak Nuclear Properties from Single Molecular Ions in a Penning Trap

Here, we present a novel technique to probe electroweak nuclear properties by measuring parity violation (PV) in single molecular ions in a Penning trap. The trap’s strong magnetic field Zeeman shifts opposite-parity rotational and hyperfine molecular states into near degeneracy. The weak interaction-induced mixing between these degenerate states can be larger than in atoms by more than 12 orders of magnitude, thereby vastly amplifying PV effects. The single molecule sensitivity would be suitable for applications to nuclei across the nuclear chart, including rare and unstable nuclei.

The second Higgs at the lifetime frontier

We assess the current coverage and the future discovery potential of LHC searches for heavy Higgs bosons decaying into long-lived particles (LLPs), focusing primarily on the production of pairs of LLPs with hadronic final states. These signatures are generic in dark sectors where a heavy scalar decays into pairs of lighter states which subsequently mix with the Standard Model Higgs. We show that a handful of existing analyses provide broad coverage of LLP decay lengths ranging from millimeters to tens of meters, and explore the complementarity between searches for displaced and prompt final states in several simplified models. For both heavy singlet and heavy doublet scalars, LLP searches typically provide the leading sensitivity in current data and exhibit the strongest discovery potential in future LHC runs. We further translate the impact of these searches into the parameter space of various Twin Higgs models, demonstrating that LLP searches are a promising avenue for discovering a Twin Higgs with displaced decays. Finally, we propose a variety of additional search channels that would improve coverage of the second Higgs at the lifetime frontier.

Correlated insulator of excitons in WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattices

A panoply of unconventional electronic states has been observed in moiré superlattices. Engineering similar bosonic phases remains, however, largely unexplored. We report the observation of a bosonic correlated insulator in tungsten diselenide/tungsten disulfide (WSe 2 /WS 2 ) moiré superlattices composed of excitons, that is, tightly bound electron-hole pairs. We develop a pump probe spectroscopy method that we use to observe an exciton incompressible state at exciton filling ν ex = 1 and charge neutrality, indicating a correlated insulator of excitons. With varying charge density, the bosonic correlated insulator continuously transitions into an electron correlated insulator at charge filling ν e = 1, suggesting a mixed correlated insulating state between the two limits. Our studies establish semiconducting moiré superlattices as an intriguing platform for engineering bosonic phases.

New Insights into the Charge-Transfer-to-Solvent Spectrum of Aqueous Iodide: Surface versus Bulk

Liquid phase charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) transitions are important, as they serve as photochemical routes to solvated electrons. Here in this work, broadband deep-ultraviolet electronic sum frequency generation (DUV-ESFG) and two-photon absorption (2PA) spectroscopic techniques were used to assign and compare the nature of the aqueous iodide CTTS excitations at the air/water interface and in bulk solution. In the one-photon absorption (1PA) spectrum, excitation to the 6s Rydberg-like orbital (5p → 6s) gives rise to a pair of spin–orbit split iodine states, 2 P 3/2 and 2 P 1/2 . In the 2PA spectra, the lower-energy 2 P 3/2 peak is absent and the observed 2PA peak, which is ~0.14 eV blue-shifted relative to the upper 2 P 1/2 CTTS peak seen in 1PA, arises from 5p → 6p electronic promotion. The band observed in the ESFG spectrum is attributed to mixing of excited states involving 5p → 6p and 5p → 6s promotions caused by both vibronic coupling and the external electric field generated by asymmetric interfacial solvation.

Deciphering the excited-state landscape of Cr(iii) tris(diimines) using [Cr(phen) 3 ] 3+

Earth-abundant Cr(III) polypyridines chromophores feature long-lived doublet ligand-field excited states. The thermally equilibrated 2 T 1 / 2 E ligand-field excited state manifold produces broad, structured UV-Vis-NIR absorption bands. Although ubiquitous across pseudo-octahedral Cr(III) diimine complexes, the dynamics and individual electronic transitions underlying these spectra have remained elusive. Here, we combine time-resolved spectroscopy and multiconfigurational calculations to assign ground- and excited-state absorption spectra of Cr(III) tris(1,10-phenanthroline), [Cr(phen) 3 ] 3+ , as a prototypical example for this class of complexes. Excited-state kinetics reveal a rapid biexponential decay of the initially prepared intraligand/ligand-to-metal charge transfer [ 4 ( 1 IL)/ 4 LMCT] excited state into the lowest 2 T 1 / 2 E state within 10 picoseconds, assigned to intersystem crossing and vibrational relaxation. Calculations identify broad excited-state absorption features associated with metal-centered ligand-field states ( 2 MC) mixed with intraligand ( 2 IL) transitions within the doublet manifold. These results provide detailed spectral assignments and highlight the need to include multiconfigurational ligand-based orbitals when modeling the spectral properties of Cr(III) coordination complexes.

Parallelized POD-based suboptimal economic model predictive control of a state-constrained Boussinesq approximation

Motivated by an energy efficient building application, we want to optimize a quadratic cost functional subject to the Boussinesq approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations and to bilateral state and control constraints. Since the computation of such an optimal solution is numerically costly, we design an efficient strategy to compute a sub-optimal (but applicationally acceptable) solution with significantly reduced computational effort. We employ an economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy to obtain a feedback control. The MPC sub-problems are based on a linear-quadratic optimal control problem subjected to mixed control and state constraints and a convection-diffusion equation, reduced with proper orthogonal decomposition. Finally, to solve each sub-problem, we apply a primal-dual active set strategy. The method can be fully parallelized, which enables the solution of large problems with real-world parameters.

Imaging and speciation of intracellular metallic implant debris using synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence micro-spectroscopy: a study of two cases

Debris generated from total hip arthroplasty (THA) components made from metal alloys can cause, in some cases, inflammatory cell (e.g., macrophages) responses that lead to adverse local tissue reactions (ALTR) and implant failure. The lack of information on intracellular chemical alterations of metal debris has hindered the understanding of the pathogenesis of ALTR. The goal of this study was to characterize intracellular debris within macrophages using Synchrotron imaging and spectroscopy. We studied periprosthetic tissues of two retrieved THAs with (1) a metal-on-metal (MoM) articulation and (2) a metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) articulation exhibiting corrosion of the metal femoral head. The MoM-THA exhibited different valence states of chromium- and cobalt-containing debris, suggesting three different moieties: Cr 2 O 3 , CrPO 4 , and an alloy-oxide mixture. The findings further suggest that Cr 2 O 3 formed in the tribological interfaces of the implant, while CrPO 4 is a by-product of the phagocytosis process of cobalt alloy-containing debris. Titanium debris appeared to occur in a mixed crystalline/amorphous oxide state. It remains unclear if this chemical state results from the tribochemical processes at the implant surface or intracellular alterations. The MoP-THA specimen exhibited no intracellular particulate debris associated with macrohpages, indicating that the ALTR may be entirely triggered by metal ionic species in this case. A better understanding of in vivo chemical alteration of implant debris will aid in assessing the risk for ALTR during implant design and material choice. However, various techniques are needed to accurately determine the interaction between metal particles and the inta- and extra-cellular environment.

On the Red Antenna States of Photosystem I Mutants from Cyanobacteria Synechocystis PCC 6803

To identify the molecular composition of the low-energy states in cyanobacterial Photosystem I (PSI) of Synechocystis PCC6803, we focus on high resolution (low-temperature) absorption, emission, resonant, and nonresonant hole burned spectra obtained for wild-type (WT) PSI and three PSI mutants. In the Red_a mutant, the B33 chlorophyll (Chl) is added to the B31-B32 dimer; in Red_b, histidine 95 (His95) on PsaB (which coordinates Mg in the B7 Chl within the His95-B7-A31-A32- cluster) is replaced with glutamine (Gln), while in the Red_ab mutant, both mutations are made. We show that the C706 state (B31-B32) changes to the C710 state (B31-B32-B33) in both Red_a and Red_ab mutants, while the C707 state in WT Synechocystis (localized on the His95-B7-A31-A32 cluster) is modified to C716 in both Red_b and Red_ab. Excitation energy transfer from C706 to the C714 trap in the WT PSI and Red_b mutant is hampered as reflected by a weak emission at 712 nm. Large electron-phonon coupling strength (exposed via resonant hole-burned spectra) is consistent with a strong mixing of excited states with intermolecular charge transfer states leading to significantly red-shifted emission spectra. We conclude that excitation energy transfer in PSI is controlled by fine-tuning the electronic states of a small number of highly conserved red states. Finally, we show that mutations modify the protein potential energy landscape as revealed by different shapes and shifts of the blue- and red-shifted antiholes.

Elucidation of complex triplet excited state dynamics in Pd(ii) biladiene tetrapyrroles

Pd(II) biladienes have been developed over the last five years as non-aromatic oligotetrapyrrole complexes that support a rich triplet photochemistry. In this work, we have undertaken the first detailed photophysical interrogation of three homologous Pd(II) biladienes bearing different combinations of methyl- and phenyl-substituents on the frameworks’ sp 3 -hybridized meso-carbon (i.e., the 10-position of the biladiene framework). These experiments have revealed unexpected excited-state dynamics that are dependent on the wavelength of light used to excite the biladiene. More specifically, transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that higher-energy excitation (λ exc ~ 350–500 nm) led to an additional lifetime (i.e., an extra photophysical process) compared to experiments carried out following excitation into the lowest-energy excited states (λ exc = 550 nm). Each Pd(II) biladiene complex displayed an intersystem crossing lifetime on the order of tens of ps and a triplet lifetime of ~20 μs, regardless of the excitation wavelength. However, when higher-energy light is used to excite the complexes, a new lifetime on the order of hundreds of ps is observed. The origin of the ‘extra’ lifetime observed upon higher energy excitation was revealed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). These efforts demonstrated that excitation into higher-energy metal-mixed-charge-transfer excited states with high spin–orbit coupling to higher energy metal-mixed-charge-transfer triplet states leads to the additional excitation deactivation pathway. Furthermore, the results of this work demonstrate that Pd(II) biladienes support a unique triplet photochemistry that may be exploited for development of new photochemical schemes and applications.

Spin-polarization anisotropy controlled by bending in tungsten diselenide nanoribbons and tunable excitonic states

A WSe 2 monolayer shows many interesting properties due to its spin-orbit coupling induced spin splitting in bands around the Fermi level and the spin-valley configuration. The orientation of the spin polarization in the relevant bands is crucial for the nature of exciton states and the optical valley selectivity. In this work, we studied the WSe 2 nanoribbons under different mechanical bending curvatures and electron/hole doping with density functional theory and their optical absorption and excitonic states with many-body perturbation GW and BSE (Bethe-Salpeter equation) methods. We found that the WSe 2 nanoribbons can exhibit an enhanced SOC effect and a spatially varying spin polarization in bands around the Fermi level under bending. The spin-polarization can show an anisotropy (or asymmetry) in those nearly degenerate bands, leading to a controllable magnetism via bending and electron/hole doping to the nanoribbons, suggesting a potential application in compact and controllable magnetic nanodevices and spintronics. The optical absorption spectrum of the nanoribbon presents a large tunability with bending within the near infrared region of about 0.4 to 1.5 eV, showing an enhanced absorption at a large bending condition. Finally, the exciton states generally show mixed or various spin configuration in the electron and hole pairs that are controlled by bending, potentially useful for applications in spin-based quantum information processes.

DFT-guided flux synthesis of a family of layered titanates crystallizing in the lepidocrocite structure type

K 0.72 Fe 0.72 Ti 1.28 O 4 , a layered mixed-metal oxide belonging to the lepidocrocite structure type, was grown out of a molten KCl-KF mixture at 800 °C. The compound crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Cmcm and exhibits two-dimensional layers, composed of mixed Fe/Ti octahedra, separated by K ions that occupy the interlayer layer space and maintain charge balance. The targeted flux synthesis of the Ni, Cu, and Zn analogs was carried out after density functional theory (DFT) calculations predicted their formation to be energetically favorable, yielding K 0.77 Ni 0.38 Ti 1.62 O 4 , K 0.77 Cu 0.38 Ti 1.62 O 4 , and K 0.73 Zn 0.36 Ti 1.64 O 4 . Finally, all four compositions can be prepared via conventional solid-state technique by mixing and heating stoichiometric amounts of KNO 3 , appropriate transition metal oxide precursors, and TiO 2 .

Porosity Development at Li-Rich Layered Cathodes in All-Solid-State Battery during In Situ Delithiation

Structural evolutions are crucial for determining the performance of high-voltage lithium, manganese-rich layered cathodes. Moreover, interface between electrode and electrolyte plays a critical role in governing ionic transfer in all-solid-state batteries. In this work, we unveil two different types of porous structure in Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 cathode with LiPON solid-state electrolyte. Na-nopores are found near the cathode/electrolyte interface at pristine state, where cation mixing, phase transformation, oxygen loss and Mn reduction are also found. In situ Li + extraction induces the evolution of nanovoids, initially formed near the inter-face then propagated into the bulk. Despite the development of nanovoids, layered structure is conserved, suggesting the nature of nanopores and nanovoids are different and their impact would be divergent. This work demonstrates the intrinsic interfacial layer, as well as the dynamic scenario of nanovoid formation inside high-capacity layered cathode, which help understanding the performance fading in cathodes and offer insights into the all-solid-state battery design.
